Given where we stand right now. Lets talk draft. 1st round pick?
Convince me otherwise. This is what I think Miami should do with their 1st round pick. We are all questioning Henne's ability. The keepers and the trashers. I've read both sides of the Henne question. I am a keeper. I don't agree with getting rid of him at all. He is pretty much still untested thanks to "The Dan Henning Handcuffs". Sure Brandon Marshall should of helped a lot more. Look who is on the other side. Brian Hartline. Since he doesn't scare anyone Brandon gets doubled. Brandon is good but c'mon he can't beat it all the time. Brian rarely gets doubled so he should have a lot better numbers then he does now. But he doesn't. He is never going to be great. Not enough height, not enough size, not enough speed, and not enough consistency. He's close in all those aspects but not close enough. In my eyes he's just a slightly faster Greg Camarillo. I think with Miami's first pick, they need to replace him.
Back to the Henne question. If we really want to find out if he IS or ISN'T our guy we need to give him more then one good wideout and slot. Think about it. If we draft another threatening wideout, what would be Henne's excuse? Nothing!. What would be our coaching staff's excuse? Nothing! There would be no excuse whatsoever. Either we would need a new QB or a new OC thats it. I'm pretty sure are pass blocking will be just as good as it is when healthy. There are quite a few of us who think we need to draft a RB in the first round. I am NOT one of those voices. If we spend our 1st round pick on RB, we will only be putting a security blanket over the questions we have on Henne. We would be running a lot more then this year. That will definetly not answer the QB question. Those who say we should take a RB will say " It will take some pressure off of Henne" this is true, it would. Ask yourself this though " Do we really want to do that? ". Do we really want Henne to play without pressure and when it comes, watch him become flustered and do something stupid? I don't want to see that. I want to see if he can handle the pressure, remain calm, and put the ball where it needs to go.
The people who want a 1st round running back will also say " Ricky and Ronnie are getting old and RBs don't last long in this league". Also true. They don't last long and Ricky is getting old. However, I think we can wait one more year for that. Neither have been injured yet. Our interior O-line has sucked at blocking for our oh so old RBs this year. We can fill that spot with a free agent just incase an injury does occur. That position in my opinion certainly does not call for a 1st round pick. Another point to point out is that if we do infact plan to draft a 1st round RB then what are we doing calling for Dan Henning's head? He wanted a run first team in the first place. It would be pretty contradictory to say "we don't pass the ball enough and well enough Henning" " we want to see some more deep passes Henning" " No more wildcat Henning" and then to just turn around and get a RB.
The point that really backs my 1st round pick is this. If we really want to put a swift end to The Marino Curse. Then why don't we surround our QB, whom ever it may be, with some threatening, no BS WRs that can make it happen like Marino had. We already have two in Marshall and Bess. Lets get a third one so we can use our WR core as a tool for leverage to test any QB or OC we put in. We can't do that when Marshall gets doubled all the time. That takes away from the effectiveness of that tool. Almost forgot Fasano. I have no problems with him so far this year. I don't need to talk about him much.
Besides the 1st round, I think it is clear what the rest of the draft should look like. Some interior O-line players who can run block worth a damn.

We made last year all about the D on Draft Weekend
It is clear this year is all about Offense. Once we have a new OC we will know what type of personnel we need to fit the new system. In the mean time I have to disagree, we need a fresh, fast back. R & R never have been nor will be ‘factor backs’ or posess break away speed. We need to help our offense by no longer playing lip service to having a balanced offense.
Yea. I'd love to start to focus on Offense beyond the O line
giving anthony a new contract although its not binding takes away us getting a quick WR like TE. But honestly I think we need to look for one. Anthony has developed great blocking skills due to our conservative play calling. We need someone that can really give us an advantage match up wise. I.E Dustin Keller blah blah. Too fast for an LB. Too big for a nickelback. As long as Tony is coach bringing in new bruisers on O line will be guaranteed. Safety spot clemons hopefully will evolve and grow. Bell is bell great in the run but I think is a liability in any type of pass coverage. Jones seems to be the best in secondary, although limited on film, he gets too the ball. Sean smith is truly becoming a back up in the league. The kid can’t and won’t tackle. DB will be a need! 2nd round latest to get a quality starter right away…even though thats not a sure thing. Love bess, Love marshall, i actually like brian…needs to become more consistent but he runs very well after catch. We need another guy who can just stretch the field. Devon and Brian I love em. but they don’t scare anyone. Devon is a respected slot receiver we know this..we need someone who can just blaze and catch. Not ted ginn. Although he would’ve been a nice piece to this offense. I don’t think ronnie will be here next year. It’s a shame because he doesn’t have much value right now. I think plenty of teams would be interested in a kid that can just bust heads inside the Tackles. Health and lack of the big play will forever hurt ronnie. I love our Dline. Paul S has grown..starks might even be able to go back to DE where he has been all year..kinda. Odrick, Edds, Misi, Cwake, tony mc, kendal, we’ll see if merling sticks tight. Thats a young line boys and girls. Starks being the oldest at 32? 33? I would love to have another ILB. Love channing on run downs but he is a liability in pass defense. Guess thats why Edds was drafted..pure cover line backer. Whats my point in this rant? I don’t have one but we can really go anywhere. qb, rb, center, LB, DB, WR. those are a lot of needs.

I know this is asking for a lot but
Vernon Davis! Imagine him and his brother on the same team?!?! I hope he will not want to remain on a rebuilding SF team and might want to come to Miami. But I agree we need a TE that can open up our intermediate passing game. Part of the reason why we struggle against TE’s is because ours SUCK. They do not give our D a good look during the week.
^^^That
would be awsome if Vernon came here. That would mean we have two Vernons on the same team. TEs don’t go deep enough for us. We are fine in short to medium passing. We need depth yardage badly. That can only be filled with a WR.

He’s certainly faster then Ronnie. He just doesn’t maintain that speed very long. I see the value of the fast back to our team. I just don’t think it is as much of a necessity as getting someone who can get open deep. Getting a RB would’nt change the opponents defensive scheme and gameplan enough. Look at Chris Johnson. You don’t hear him getting the big yardage runs he did last year. They would just stack the box and double Brandon just incase its a pass. Maybe if we were better at run blocking and would’nt need to draft interior linemen.

Why won't that answer the QB question?
We should take a poll and find out how many fans want a team that can dominate with the run, or a team that can dominate with the pass. I for one would vote run, and in that system when we’re running 25+ times a game, when Henne only has 25 or so pass attempts, we’ll find out exactly what he can do. Henne should have never had to pass 35-40 times a game like he’s done this season. That’s not the type of team we should be. Henne is NOT Marino, Manning, or Brady, and we’ll likely never get a hold of that type of qb.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
You really do need to have a balanced offense though, even if you specialize in one area.

I think a QB
should have at least 28 attempts a game. Look at the teams that have won the Superbowl in recent years Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Saints, Giants. 3 of them are more pass oriented then run. Chargers dominated the run game with LT and they never even went to the superbowl with him. A good team is balanced with running and passing but better teams pass just a little bit more then they run. Perfect example is the Patriots. They were a dynasty and they were pass oriented heavy. How do you get that throwing less passes evaluates a QB better then more attempts? I think with more attempts you are getting to see more of what a QB is supposed to do pass the ball. More attempts gives you more chances to see how strong and how accurate his arm is. More chances to see his leadership, poise, and decision making. It is a passing league now we are not in the 70s

and draft to whatever system he wants
but i’m thinking no matter what system you want to run you need a good o-line.
Sadly there aren’t too many good o-line prospects

I would like to see us trade down and try for a 2nd rounder, that is unless someone we feel is a great player falls to our pick.
All in all it’s very early to think draft, we don’t onow who the OC will be, that will have a big effect on our draft.
I don't care if we trade down..
as long as we can still get Julio Jones I’m fine with it. WE NEED A DEEP THREAT WR!

Isn't Hartline doing really well for a receiver in his second season?
He seems to be regarded as a non-threat, but actually can be part of a good offense I think.
Also, it will depend on availability and talent. Are any QBs worth taking? Is Ingram too good to refuse if available?
I like Hartline. I love all our recievers. That's not our problem, for sure.
I’ll keep repeating this: short of Luck, Mallett, and Newton, there’s not a qb in this draft that’s better than Henne.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
Hartline is doing alright.
He is nothing special though. We need someone over there who will draw some coverage. I don’t think he’ll ever be that threatening.
by Matt the Dolfan on Nov 22, 2010 4:50 PM EST reply actions
Why?
Why do we need someone different at # 2 WR? Look at all of the # 2 WR’s in the league, and I think Hartline measures up just fine. We need to draft O-Linemen — maybe not with the 1st round pick, but that will all depend on our draft position and who is available. WR should be way down on our priority list.
Remember we have a couple guys who are developing at WR also.
Nobody hurt a tackler like Zonk did.

I love our recievers. We don't need to change any of them.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
He is a wr in his second year.
Despite a couple drops and a fumble lost, Hartline is quietly putting together a solid season. Brian led the Dolphins in receptions and receiving yards (5 for 70) on Thursday night – his third consecutive game with at least 70 yards receiving. And right now, he’s the only vertical threat the Dolphins have. Three of his five catches went for over 15 yards, including two 20+ yard receptions.
We have BM, Hartline and Bess, we don’t need a wr so badly that we can take him in the first. We have a lot of other needs.

Come on.
You call 70 yards acceptable for a wide out? Maybe for a slot receiver. For a wideout that doesn’t cut it for me. It should be more like 100 yards. Even 90 is good. I’m sorry we won’t be able to use Brandon effectively if someone doesn’t draw coverage and I don’t think Brian will ever do that. 20 yards isn’t deep anyway its medium range.
by Matt the Dolfan on Nov 30, 2010 10:40 AM EST up reply actions
Quit being Maddenesque
100 yards per game from a WR equals 1600 yards in a season - are you flipping serious, from a # 2 WR? Go look up the stats of all teams last year, find their # 2 WR, and see how many yards they gained. Good grief.

depends on what we decide to do with ronnie and ricky...
Miami's Superstarts: Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby, Vontae Davis (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Hanley Ramirez :)
Really unsure of where we will be drafting in the 1st round but I think regardless we just get player available
Besides LT. We really could get better (or deeper) at any position. A center would be nice but it looks like only Wiseniewski (I’m that’s spelled incorrectly) is the only 1st round talent. Running back? Yeah we could use one of those. Speedy WR? That too. OL? Depth can’t hurt. TE? Fasano is a solid starter but again depth/ improving can’t hurt. I’ve said it before I see this as a luxury draft. We don’t have any GLARING needs. Center is the biggest need but we not be able to address that until the third round.
Always late to the party
"get the BEST player available"

Always late to the party
What we need is a pure blocker as a TE
because Haynos and Nalbone aren’t with us anymore. AND a TE that can receive. Fasano can do both, so we don’t need to find that hybrid guy that can do both.

i agree wth the wr point.
but we also need a speedy rb that could help us in a big way. our ol can be upgraded thru fa. look at the eagles, they have speed at rb and wr and te. they are very dangerous at any of those positions. that is what we lack, and therefore we need it. henne is still the qb, i think. but henning needs to go. bring in a oc that is willing to take risks a little more often.

We've got to address the running game in this draft.
We need to draft running backs and a center and gaurds. I believe an improved running game will do much more for Henne and the recievers than if we got our hands on a burner wideout. I’d still like a speedy deepthreat, but it’s not a need right now.

First round id have us trade down, pick up a second rounder
And in the first pick up Courtney Upshaw MLB 6’2" 263 Alabama
This kids got experience in the 3-4,can play inside or out, plays for a pro style defense. Paired up with dansby in the middle,it locks up our linebacker core.
As for recouping the second rounder,i have one of two ways to go here, either: Kelechi Osemele OG 6’5" 335 Iowa state or
Torey Smith WR Maryland 6’1" 205 runs a 4.38 40
Personally id go Guard, but if we can manage to somehow pick up 2 second round picks. Id love to have both.

in the third
Theres Jeff Demps runningback from Fla. 5’8" 190
Fourth:Jeremiah Hatch-Center Kansas
At 6’3" 332 Hes got the size to be versatile enough to flip to guard if need be
5th: Manny Abreu Olb 6’3" 245 Rutgers
6th: David Meggett RB,5’8",215 Maryland
7th: Brandon Barden TE 6’5" 250 Vanderbilt
Draft that both takes care of need, and at bpa what do you think?

I wouldn’t pick up 2 LBs in this draft as we have Edds coming back next year and we also have Odrick and Merling too. A true NT would definitely help free up any ILB to make plays quicker.
We saw that first hand with Jason Ferguson in and out last year.
Sign & trade Ronnie & Crowder for a 2nd Rd pick and whatever else we can get
1st – RB Mark Ingram (Plan B = RB Ryan Matthews)
2nd – trade to get pick – Stefen Wisniewski (Penn St) or ILB Quan Sturdivant (UNC)
3rd – NT Anthony Gray (Southern Miss)
4th – G/C John Moffitt (Wisconsin) All Big Ten last year – played center in 2008
5th – G Steve Schilling (Michigan) All Big Ten honorable mention last year
6th – RB Mario Fannin (Auburn) sleeper pick – can catch & run just overshadowed by Newton
7th – TE Gantt (Michigan State) 6’5" 4.8 40, great blocker and still caught 22 for 348
The C will be gone by pick 20.
I don’t care how good the RB is, he will not be good behind our line.
We don’t need to take a NT that early. Starks was very good in that respect when he was there.
We need to take a RT more than a G, especially if we get Wisniewski. You have to secede that you can’t have a Probowl player at every position and Gardner is coming back. Incognito will be a good backup at both G position.
We need more RBs, as I think 2 or 3 of the RBs currently on the roster will be gone this offseason.
We already have a couple good blocking TEs on the roster, we need one that can run routes.

We don’t have a second round pick, Dallas would probably take a qb, and so would Buffalo, even if they were willing to make a deal with a rival. Carolina may trade with us but who can be sure. The deck will be stacked against us.

I think we should focus our draft on college players who are
Team Captains. That should work, right? WE don’t need fast guys or tough guys or heady guys, we just need guys who are Team Captains. Guys that are respected by their teammates. It doesn’t matter if they will be good Pro’s or not. Just so they were good college players and Team Captains.

It depends on how the rest of the season goes...
If it continues the way it is going, we get a high pick, and one of the 3 elite QB’s are on the board we have to take them. I am sick of 2nd round QB’s it is very rare that you find one capable of winning a superbowl outside the 1st. But if one isn’t on the board, we need to draft some sort of speed either at RB or WR. Although I wouldn’t be against taking one of the many great corners in this draft (there are a lot of them). Having another shutdown corner across from Vontae would be great. Then we could maybe groom Sean Smith to cover those elite tight ends that always kill us.

i totally agree with you man
we need more throwing options, i love what we have now, but it’s just not enough. our receiving core doesn’t even scare DCs. i say new OC, and as for the draft id say more throwing options, a WR, TE, then a MLB, and stack the OL, and maybe a nose tackle. if we can pass first then that’ll definitely open up the running game big time, look at new orleans last year. Compare our recieving core to everyone else, and we are mediocore… wait isn’t our standings that too?… go figure.
...yay
...I'm drunk and pessimistic
To a point Matt
You over look the talent available for the draft. If there is a good young QB prospect, GRAB HIM!!!
It doesn't mean we have to get rid of Henne
But any smart team will have a first run qb and a young one they are developing. Its time to look for another young qb we can work with, instead of letting ANOTHER year go by and then if Henne fails again, look to replace him… when we could have had a young one with now a years experience on the team and ready to step in. And just as big a factor is the O line. If we fail to improve it, any qb will have trouble. I think Thigpen might have won that last game if he had a real line instead of the 3rd string line. R $ R will never be able to gain yardage on the ground with out a line to block.
Who is the top two TE's coming out of the draft next year?
If they are studs, we should take one early. However, if we end up with a high pick (hope not) we should focus on a QB or DT
you can get one of those in the late round's we had high pick's in each round & decited to not get eather Center or DT Opp's that's been decust already!
