Sacrificial Lambs - part 1

Its a long week for us to see Miami in action again. As we only have 6 games to go, maybe its a good time to discuss the situation regarding certain positions/players , and what we should do with that regard for next season.

Will start with the QBs (being a hot topic), later i may go quicker if you find this exciting enough. I do talk to myself occasionally, but not this much :)

Position: QB

Current Players: Chad Henne, Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen, Patrick Ramsey, Tom Brandstater

Current Situation:

One of the most debatable arguments amongst fans remains whether Henne can be our starter or not. Henne has shown some positives so far: Strong Arm, can move the ball, generally effective on 3rd down, usually lots of yards. His completion percentage is good too. However, Henne has also thrown alot of picks, he seems to be too inconsistent on his accuracy. Pressure may be getting to him. Despite having more weapons, he hasn't had done very well so far.

The only other option on the list is Thigpen, who's audition maybe the next few games. Tyler has good numbers from his KC days. He is more daring and willing to take shots. His mobility is a great asset. However, he is also prone to alot of INTs. His completion % since KC days isn't that good, but that was a very poor team.

For all purposes, these are really our only two options. Pennington will likely retire, and even if he doesn't, i don't see how we move on with a 35 yr old QB who will be having possibly a 5th shoulder op. Ramsey is a career back-up, and Brandstater hasn't stuck in several clubs, though at least the technical staff can evaluate him now.

Draft / Market Options:

Lets now look at external options.

Draft wise, looks like we will be drafting between 10 and 20, depending how our next 6 games go. The best QB prospect according to most reports is Luck, but if he comes out, he won't go out of the top 5. Only question is do we invest the 1st round on someone like Locker if he drops? Locker was considered the next Steve Young just 12 months ago, but he has disappointed this year. Another top candidate, Mallet, may not also drop this far. Do we trade up?

Market options realistically are the following (i may miss 1 or 2 names, feel to add them in comments):

- Kevin Kolb: The way Vick is playing, would be shocking if Eagles don't renew or franchise him. So Philly will probably deal Kolb. The former 2nd rounder has fairly good accuracy and does suit a quick, short passing team, though he would be as much as a risk as Henne is.

- Alex Smith: The former 1st overall pick has had many chances with SF to show his skills, but combination of shoulder injuries, lack of confidence....or whatever else, has never shown consistency enough to stick. I wouldn't want him in Miami, but you never know. He was compared to Aaron Rodgers coming out, and we know how good Rodgers is.

- Kyle Orton: Odds are not good. But consider this. McDanials is under pressure and he drafted Tebow. Orton will cost some picks, but the guy is good overall. I don't like him carrying a team, but give him a good Defense and a decent running game, and he is efficient and doesn't make too many mistakes.

- Donavan McNabb: Odds again not very high, but things may end on really bad terms before season end. Question is, does he have enough left? i think if he felt he is playing in a contender, he would play better. Wouldn't trade for him or overpay though.

- Others: Less likely options, simply because i don't think they are any better then what we have, include Shaun Hill (ex SF and now with Detroit, has played very well in Stafford place and his stats are good over his career starts), Matt Hassleback (Seattle will want to move on to Whitehurst, whom they traded for, but Hassleback is getting older and never usually healthy for full season), or a current starting QB that their team may give up on , namely Carolina's Matt Moore or Jacksonville's David Garrard

So what do you guys think? IMO, i think Henne deserves another season, with a different OC. I know the QB is the most important position in the game, but i think we have other more significant gaps, plus good QBs are rare. If there was an option which is surely better, i would take it. But i am not sure there is.
