Yes Thigpen to start, but how will he do?

Everyone already knows how much of a rollercoaster we were all on this week, what with the big QB change. Then today, in the span of just one game, we had even more highs and lows.

Wonderful news.....the dolphins come back with a strong win today over a good Titans team.

Bad news...as anyone who has not been hiding under a rock knows by now, both Henne & Penne were injured and said knocks appear severe enough that neither QB may return this season.

Ouch.

Silver lining...if one can be found....we get an extended look at a young QB, just not one named Henne :-)

Star-divide

So Thigpen came on and got the job done today. All credit to him for his contribution in what had to be a tight spot...starting off as the 3rd QB, in all honesty probably not expecting to take a single snap whatsoever, and then instead, to go in with the game on the line.

Again, well done Thigpen :-)

Here's the question for the fans though....what do you expect from Thigpen going forward as the likely starter?

This is just my opinion...

Thigpen has moxie there's no denying it and frankly, he more or less has to in order to still be in the league as a former 7th round pick. That's testament to what some people call the "it" factor and yes he has it.

He's also athletic, dynamic, and pretty fearless - a game manager I do not see him being!

I think Thigpen is an fantastic backup QB who can provide a real spark and get you through a couple of games. He brings something different than our other 2 guys (mobility and speed). Plus, team's haven't nearly had as much (recent) film on him from which to prepare.

However, I think over an extended period, and 7 games counts as that....teams will figure him out and better game plan for his style. Thigpen will make some plays no doubt, but he'll also make his share of mistakes and at times, be erratic - no surprise if you've watched him play or if you haven't seen much of him, just check out his comp. % over his career.

So I don't see him as a long-term answer at QB....although I would a) love to be proven wrong, and b) am glad to see one of our young QB's getting his shot instead of a stop-gap like Pennington (sorry but the truth remains even if it hurts....no pun intended).

I think come next season, we are likely to still be unsettled at the QB position - at least assuming the same coaching staff is in place, seeing as they benched Henne for Penne.

Maybe some think, oh it is easy to say Thigpen won't be the long-term answer at QB. Possibly, but I know at least some folks might be playing that well-known game of  trying Thigpen as potential Dan Marino successor candidate # 29. :-)

What do you all think of Thigpen as our starter for the remainder of the season?

But… as you can tell from my signature, it’s probably time to start looking else where.

do you expect him to be sensational?

He hasn’t shown anything to make me believe that he’ll be “sensational”. I hope he proves me wrong, but I just don’t see it.

I agree with Nat, in that he’s great for a short term period, but he’s at his best when he rolls out…. and thats easier to stop than a regular pocket passer.

I never said I expect, hope, don’t think, or don’t want. If a QB is sensational, through consistent demonstration of this, then he deserves his spot.

And my response would be no

But there’s a small chance that a mobile QB that takes risks and makes plays with his legs is what this team needs. There’s a chance. And if it is, then he could play lights out and win the job.

I wouldn’t bet on it, and I like a bet.

thigpen will be better than henne

Henne has played more games than thigpen..

but, everyone here states that he is nothing.. but a stop gap? henne could barely stare down a safety, couldnt do much..

why does Thiggy not get the support that he deserves? he will only be this or that.. why doesnt he get the chance henne had?? henne sucks, he really does & if thiggy plays like henne the last 20+ games he started, ill say the same thing.. but untill then, he is our qb

it is about bashing and hating, and love and being a real fan.

Not about football.

Henne certainly does not suck.Thats kind of a ridiculous statement.

Henne may have started the season locking on receivers, but he clearly goes thru his progressions. He’s not going to stare down a safety like Peyton Manning might, but jesus, its his 2nd year of playing.

He’s 12-10 as a starter (I am giving him the win yesterday, even though he didn’t actually start).

He’s currently ranked 13th in the NFL for plays over 20+ yards
His completion percentage is 9th in the NFL.

However, he’s hamstrung by the 19th best Rushing attack in the league and a Defense that is giving up 21.3 points a game….

When Thigpen lines up under center, he gets every ounce of support that every Dolphin fan has in them. Why do people question this? (For God sakes he’s not Pat White or Ted Ginn)

We are simply lucky that our 3rd stringer is as good as he is

Most 3rd string QBs have no business being on the field. Has beens or never-will-bes.

But it’s possible Thigpen can be an average or above average player in the NFL. I’ll support him, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do. A lot of people think that we ’don’t know what Henne has’. I think at this stage we do. It’ll be interesting to compare the offense with Thig to that with Henne.

FWIW....of course I support Thigpen...

It's not luck

The FO traded for him last year when CP10 went down and kept him over Pat White this fall. They were looking down the road…thank God they did.

I agree with Nat TT gets props for doing what he did today. Really he did all we could ask for under the circumstances. I like our chances against the Bears with Thiggy and a short week..little prep time will end up creating a more improvistational offence and a different one than the Bears have on tape.

Beyond that….wait and see….sometimes QBs take a while to mature and find the right spot – Steve Young. I suspect we’’l get a chance to find out if Thiggy can be the real deal whether we thing he will or not.

Very good point. Thigpen is neither scrap heap (having been worth a draft pick) nor an automatic hall of famer.

Thigpen can be a good starter for us

But we should be looking for a long term solution in the draft. Depending on how the rest of the season turns out, we need to try and trade up for Luck. He’s seems to be the real deal and I think he’s worth trading up to get.

Luck is impressive but if Henne is serviceable then maybe we’re looking at a RB early on. We’re supposed to be a run-first team.

I think its time we live up to that identity. At worst it’ll give us a more balanced attack.

Great QBs can turn a franchise around

There is no running back in this draft that have that ability. If we think Luck can be a great QB, then that’s what we need to go after.

Luck hasn’t thrown a pass in the pros yet. It’ll be rolling the dice again on a rookie that may or may not be ready to start and a lot depends on how he’s coached. Something I still see as suspect.

We’re going to have a serious deficiency at RB next year. If Henne comes back then we have a more experienced QB.

by cm103 on Nov 14, 2010 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

That's true

but Luck is a smart player and has played in a pro style offense. He has been coached by a former NFL QB. He’s the most pro ready QB in this draft. He might bust but there’s just as good a chance that he’ll be good.

As far as running backs go, I don’t see any back in this year’s draft that have more talent than backs in the following drafts. I say we take a chance on a QB that has the potential to be great and lead this franchise into the future as opposed to a back which won’t have anywhere near that kind of impact.

Carolina is by far the worst team in the league

Their offensive line is horrible. They have 2 rookie WR contributing that aren’t that good. They have no running game. They have an offensive coordinator who might actually be worse than ours. They have a lame duck coach who isn’t giving a crap. Their secondary is a liability. Their defensive line is bad. Clausen is the LEAST of their worries and NOT the reason Carolina is sucking.

I agree with the point about a franchise qb. The problem is getting one and having them make that step to the pros. Its a spin of the wheel again and it doesn’t seem that easy. If it was, then we would have one already.

Also, if the system around them isn’t tailored for them and they can’t stay upright, then we’ll be mediocre anyway.

Also....

I think the term “Pro Style offense” gets thrown around way too much when referencing College Quarterbacks.

There is absolutely very little in College offenses that translates into the Pros. Not to mention that there isn’t a single team in the NFL that runs an NFL style defense….and that is why even a “Pro-Style Offense” QB struggles when they get into the league.

by sirdolphin on Nov 14, 2010 8:45 PM EST reply actions

I am confident in Thigpen for this 7 game stretch, and hopefully, beyond.

In 2008 Thigpen played in 14 games for the Chiefs, and I know what most will say, “yeah but what was his record?” Well I ask what kind of talent did he have around him? His leading receiver was in rookie in Dwayne Bowe, an aged Anthony Gonzalez, and an old vet of a RB in Larry Johnson. And an O-line that was suspect.

He played in twice the amount of games he will here, and in the tail end of that season put up a career best 320 yards with two touchdowns in the air and 57 yards rushing with a TD against.. You guessed it, the Dolphins.. That was in game 13 of a 14 game season. He threw 3 INT’s that game, one late, but do keep in mind that Miami team has the NFL record for turnover differential in a season.

I think he will be fine

I’ve said all along that we didn’t need to sign CP because we had TT and was more than capable QB. I don’t think he is getting much respect from peeps on here because he is not what they envision their starting QB to be. What if he comes and finished this season with a 6-1 record?

The situation is

If Pennington can’t get hit worse than that without being lost for the season, he needs to retire.

Henne, for some reason this coaching just doesn’t like him.

TT, this is his final year in his contract.

So that is a very good question. I’m guessing CP will retire. Henne is still under contract and knows the system. TT? I guess we bring him back? But at what cost? Do we draft a “elite talented prospect” QB in the 1st rd finally? Do we draft another one at all. Right now your guess is as good as mine. I suppose its on how we win. How TT and our offense performs. And if Chad Henne is indeed lost for the season.

Yeah...particularly the Henne & Draft angle Neo...

we aren’t likely to pick that, that high in the 1st round…probably mid-round. So that eliminates any chance of getting say, Luck as he’ll be gone.

What then…? A less “shiny” QB like Locker? A, dread the thought, later round guy?

And of course, there’s still Henne.

Oh and I agree, Penne needs to hang it up and take up a headset either as a coach or broadcaster.

Here's what I envision

We end up with 8 or 9 wins. Carolina is the worst team in the league. But they drafted Clausen and their owner is cheap. If they get the first overall pick, its unlikely they would choose Luck. They might take Dareus, but I don’t know that they would want to pay that much. If we could offer our 1st, another pick in this draft or the 2012 draft, and some players like Crowder, Carey, or someone else, then we might could trade up to the #1 pick and what looks like a true franchise QB.

I can absolutely agree with that...

I may be older, but I certainly don’t feel older. I feel like I’m in my 20’s….I just don’t look it lol.

I think with Pennington, even the most die hard fans were holding their breath, just waiting for the shoulder to pop. It had to be in everyone’s mind.

As for Henne… well, the Thigpen guys were secretly hoping..

I look at it like this. In one single game, we may eliminate any QB Controversy. CP10 won’t be lingering behind anyone anymore. Thigpen will either prove he’s a superstar, and earn the position, OR, he’ll continue to show his inconsistencies, and everyone will know that Henne is the guy, and Thiggy is the guy behind the guy.

Conversely, if Sparano & Co. stay, then they’ve already shown they’d prefer to put their chips on a 34 year old guy on his last legs, than Henne.

I'm not ready to proclaim Vick is good...

I don’t find it that easy to just forget how bad he was in Atlanta.
He is still a run first QB, and he scrambles way too often.
Not to mention he carries the ball way low, which is why he loses so many fumbles.

His accuracy has gotten a bit better this year…. I’ll give him that.

this year he has looked to throw more often than run

thats why the runs that he has gotten have been for long runs. Because he has stayed in the pocket or rolled and passed, is the reason this year his runs have been for so long.

But it’s not happening – if he keeps playing at the highest level philly will lock him down.

The team is too ‘complete’ to wait and develop a draft pick, but then again the Jets did that with Sanchez.

Pardon but I would say Henne is actually better than Sanchez...

and the reason for the jets having a better record is simply their supporting cast is better. Gasp I say this, but Rex Ryan hasn’t panicked and benched Sanchez like Sparano did here with Henne.

Henne

Has much better tools then Sanchez other then mobility, but Sanchez has this drive that at this point doesn’t seem to exist in Henne. I think Rex, if he were here, would have benched Henne, Rex is an emotional guy if the team was 4-4 and Henne was playing like he was coming off an awful game and he had CP10 available he would make a move. the coaching staff gets another year because of the QB injuries.

Joy or misery? :-)

Ah well most of the time you see people around here talking like just because

Ross is loaded that money is no object. I do not think that is true of any team except possibly the Yankees. Even Jerry Jones expects to make a healthy profit at the end of the day and that does not include just throwing money around like some fans would like.

I'm actually hoping they do make him play that way.

He plays too much on the seat of his pants.
He improvised way too much, and commits costly mistakes all in the name of making something happen…..which is okay, but he’s not a Big Ben type QB.

I want to see him do better in the system they set up for Henne.

You know….. the system designed to fail because it isn’t adapted to play to all the players strengths, but to their weaknesses.

I still see Henne as the guy... today I saw really good things for him

I expected Marshall to do better in some situations.

Now about Thiggy… well he has his shot and all those Thiggy lovers have their wish granted. For good or bad he will lead the team at least the next game, Am I confident on him? Not one bit. Did he perform today? He did no better than Henne with less pressure ’cause the team was already winning.
Let see the guy from the beginning and hope for the best. But I still think the D will win those games for us.

I got it wrong Tebow was a 1st rounder... Mau you won on this one... Damn!

Well!, we where wining but not because Henne.

Look at the Miami posetions. TD, down over, punt, punt, punt, int, punt. Still dont get why ppl r saying Henne was play like a super dude, he was playing ok and to tell u the true, i was affraid that we where gona lose this game with Henne at the helm.

Which game were you watching?

I saw Henne lead the team for 2 Td’s and 3 FG’s, I also saw again 3 dropped passes on 3rd down.
He took his fair share of shots downfield and the effort from WR’s was below average.
I saw Thiggy with a good drive but thats not indictment of anything… Henne has a great drive the first time he enter a game at Arizona didn’t he?

I got it wrong Tebow was a 1st rounder... Mau you won on this one... Damn!

To try and answer these questions we break it down, right?

How will he play, well, TT is still in this league because of potential, he can look pretty darn good at times, but as you pointed out he can look bad too, but for us to make a play at the playoffs he will have to have gotten better, plain and simple, if he hasn’t then he won’t help.

We will just have to wait and see how much he has progressed, is he ready to take a run at it, who knows, he could be the long term answer, we just have to wait and see as our season gets ever more intriguing.

Next offseason will be an important one for Chad Henne, there will be competition at the QB spot next year, whether they bring in a veteran or draft someone or both, there will be competition, and for more than just back up, for Henne it comes down to how much he can improve this offseason and with just who we can get, if we go and get Vick, Henne will either be a back up or be gone, if it’s a young player Henne just might get another year to try and prove he is the man.

LOL

Kill Bill

Thanks. I am just sick of all the melodrama. If you are excited about thigpen then you are sucking him off. If you don’t assume he is a necessary upgrade, you are bashing him. If you caution against claiming him to be a starting caliber QB based on one drive, you aren’t “giving him a chance”.

Well, all things being equal our questions will be answered soon enough.
