Breaking Down the Game

We won, and in the end that all that matters. There was alot of good, especially with the Defense, and while the Offense shined at times, there was still certainly room for improvement.

Defense:

They really came together and dominated in the 2nd half. Both the secondary and the line were impressive, and really made a name for itself by playing as a great defense as a whole. Things were just flowing for them. The line was getting penetration and the secondary was getting in between the ball and the defender. Overall, it was hard to not be impressed by the Defense this week, especially in the 2nd half, were the Cincinnati Bengal's 3 and outs kept piling on and on.

Special Teams:

Dan Carpenter has been amazing this year (17 for 19) and tends to keep us in games, especially today. His 5 FGs (including the 54 yarder at the end of the half) got us points when our offense sputtered in the red zone. Cobb's kickoff return at the end of the 1st half gave Miami the field position they needed to put points up by the end of the half. There are still many problems I see with the special teams however. First, Davone was shaky when it came to punt returns today, although he is normally stellar and sure handed, he misplayed the ball twice on punt returns, blame it on the sun if you would like. I am also always weary on kick off coverage. This entire season kick coverage has been shaky, and I never really feel safe from a big play when they are on the field.

Offense:

They drove well, however didn't finish well. they has 5 trips to the end zone and only 1 TD. The bright side of that is that they didn't turn over the ball in those situations, and always ended up with at least 3. As I watched the game, I sorta wondered why we have Marshall, if the other receivers combined for 4 drops, and Marshall isn't even looked at in many situations. If we want to succeed, we have to get the ball to Marshall, because as you all know, when he gets the ball, he's scary. Their one TD Drive was really impressive, and showed me the true capability that this team has. It had a combined effort of long passes, long runs, and great play calling. In my mind, it was the best drive of the year for the Fins this season. We still need to punch in for 6 while in the red zone though, and if this lackluster offense inside the 20 continue, we won't have success.

Coaching:

I thought coaching, really offensive coaching had it's ups and downs. There were those two trick plays, one the "flea flicker" of sorts, which a wide open Hartline flat out dropped, and the other, the end around that went for big yards on the TD Drive. Still though, there were some calls that left me scratching my head. At one point, Chad Henne and the offense was driving so well in a conventional offense...and then the Wildcat was brought out and the offense stalled. The wildcat is no longer a viable threat, and to be honest, our offense doesn't need it anymore. There was also a couple 3rd down situations where the play calling was poor.  One 3rd and 1, a situation were Polite is unstoppable, Henning called a play that called for a 10 yard throw, which fell incomplete, and caused them to punt. Also, there were a couple 3rd and medium distance situations were run plays were called, and it really confused me as too why they would run (and fail) in those situations. I will give credit to Henning to continue to trust Chad Henne. It has really helped him in his progression. I have no complaints about Nolan and the defensive play calling, in fact i commend him for his great calls, and also benching Jason Allen, and putting in Sean Smith after Allen was burnt for a TD.

I am truly happy with this win, we came together as a team, and our Defense and Special Teams stepped up. Our Offense also got it done to seal the deal. Great job today Dolphins, and let's go beat Baltimore.

I agree about the Wildcat

Even the announcers were talking about that. Henne and the offense was in a good rhythm and the Wildcat messed that up. Its time to shelve the Wildcat.

As far as the 3rd and 1 where we passed it; I wasn’t disappointed in the play call. EVERYONE including Cincy just knew we were going to run Polite. We ran play action to Polite and had an open Fasano. The play call wasn’t bad, just the execution.

Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.

At this point, Henne looks like a better pro QB than Palmer

and he took all kinds of shots down the field. We should let Henne air it out deep more than once a game.

He's better than Marino was in his last two years, too, statistically.

Between the Henne bashing and the Henning head scratchers….

I agree with you 100%. Change the gameplan, open it up, let Henne do what he’s proving he can handle. It just doesn’t seem like he’s getting the benefit of the whole play book.

my announcers were speaking Spanish.

So I had to just imagine the conversation but the game thread was funny.

Not having announcers for the game was a relief because they seem to favor
whom ever we are playing.

I agree with everything in the post except the call to pass it to fasano. The great thing about having polite being automatic is that there are big plays out there to be made. So to pass on of those one yarders is ok with me. We just need to execute them.

our passing offense is horrible

the pass 3 weeks henne has had all freaking day to throw the ball, i think his only been sacked once in the pass 3 weeks against a defenses who’ve been crippled by injuries. Is it because the wrs are dropping to many passes? are they getting opened down field? Is it play calling/design? or does henne have some phobia of throwing deep? Henne should be really tearing it up but he aint, his stats are solid but c’mon take a leaf out of the ’09 broncos where marshall shredded defenses. with that being said a wins a win but we have to be better on offense with the ravens, titans, bears and a rising raiders team.

and he would be better than Hartline. He straight up got HANDED his job and I cannot stand him. All i read yesterday is how he “couldn’t get open” and how defenses could get away with putting no one on him and just triple teaming Brandon Marshall. I am so sick of this guy. I guess put in Wallace and see what happens? Let him practice with the first team this week?

PS-

I think Vincent Jackson is the most overrated player in the NFL. Do you know who else thinks so too?

The San Diego Chargers
Everyteam that didn’t trade for him
The Players Union that told him to report to the Chargers because he simply does not have a case that he should be paid like Larry Fitzgerald when the Chargers throw every down and inflated his stats. I wouldn’t want him on my team, ever.

Is that enough people that think he’s overrated?

by DRoyce on Nov 1, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

You my fearful friend are an idiot...

The San Diego Chargers obviously thought he was one of the best players in the league, as they weren’t willing to accept a low ball offer for such a star player.

The NFLPA told him to show up to gain the credit of an NFL season in case the new CBA requires 5 years to be a FA, otherwise he’d be in the same situation next season…..look, you probably should learn a little bit about what you are speaking about before you speak.

Btw, Larry Fitzgerald is heavily struggling this year….. obviously due to QB issues, but still.

As for wanting him on your team…. at least we don’t have to worry about that, lol.

Yeah he had a good game. Still sucks that he dropped the pass on the flea-flicker.

Bottom line is that some have decided that they hate him for whatever reason and no matter how good a game he has they will still have negative things to say about him. Also hes in his second year and has had some huge plays for this team already. Some players (like a Miles Austin) take a few years to have any impact. Funny thing is that if Ginn was still on this team I doubt people would be slamming Hartline so much.

Yeah, it's a win-win situation.

We just need to be patient, because he is playing well, for a second year WR that is improving. If he just becomes more consistent, we’ll be fine as MArshall is still hee. If he starts making more lays, like on that TD drive on Sunday, we have a good problem, too many WRs to get the ball to. Definately a win-win situation.

I would not say I am an OSU hater

But when MIch plays OSU I do indeed root for Mich. But the point I have made before is that OSU hasn’t been exactly “pumping out skill position players”

I said that there hasn’t been a QB from there in recent memory to suceed at the NFL Level.

Santonio Holmes is really the only WR to suceed as we watch Brian Roebiskie, Ginn and Hartline fade into irrelevantcy

OSU Running Backs haven’t exactly had great careers. Clarett is currently playing for 50K on special teams in some random league and Beanie Wells is one of the most injury prone players I have ever seen.

You can go back further but what I said was that OSU football is like Duke Basketball. great college players but don’t really pane out in the NFL… RIGHT NOW. I know that earlier this decade that wasn’t the case and earlier.

By the way, when someone is making a point about football and players, do you think its right to call someone names?

yes

because he got handed a job in the off season and i can’t get the image of him bending that girl over out of my mind. I think he’s trash and doesn’t get in trouble because hes quiet. I don’t think hes a winner. He had 0 catches in the National Championship game, in fact he had 21 total catches that year and for some reason we think getting this guy 5-10 targets a game is going to help us win? If we had a better recieving Tight End it would be a different story but we need help from a 3rd party beyond Brandon Marshall and Devone Bess and I believe that passing on Dez Bryant was a huge mistake. Some say D-line was a bigger need but I say you cannot pass on that talent and simply trade down. thats the easy way out. Its not like dez bryant was ted ginn, a exclusive Special teamer. he was a stud WR.

Just think how stupid the average Jest fan is, and then realize that half of them are even stupider! ( a parody of a George Carlin line)

You are insane....

I was at the game yesterday…

Hartline was open quite a bit, and he consistently throws up great blocks during running plays.
I literally dropped my beer when he dropped the flea flicker pass…he was WIDE open, but he made up for it on the big reverse play.

Another thing I noticed during the game….is that Marshall is WIDE open…..A LOT. He easily could have had over 150 yards yesterday if we had looked his way on some plays….. but, it was also easy to see that on some of those, the plays were designed to go elsewhere.

As for Henne staring down receivers. I didn’t see it. He scans the field pretty well…. The only time I saw him locking onto receivers was when it was a quick pass pattern, or on a third and short. But anyone who thinks he stares everyone down every play hasn’t seen him live. There are plays that he might only scan one side of the field…. and not the other, but its usually because he’s got 3 guys running a route on that side, and Marshall on the other.

I saw the same thing with Henne even on TV yesterday. He looked like he was making his progressions very well and quickly.

When it comes to evaluating the players I defer to the coaches

I don’ know squat about the players. Specially the players that don’t see much playing time. Not going to second guess them.

Agreed

The front office has not shown any fear in benching or cutting players who don’t perform. This stuff about Hartline being given anything is ridiculous. If the staff though someone could do a better job they would be on the field. IF Roberto Wallace was a better option right now he would be starting.

Added to the fact that he's been playing quite well, in his second season.

You can’t expect to have Andre Johnson opposite Brandon Marshall. Hartline plays with effort and some skill. People make mistakes.

someone better

If there was somone better on the team or off the street they would be wearing a dolphin uniform and playing on Sunday. Nobody on this team gets a free pass except for Henne playing over CP. And that is just about building for the future.
