Who's In, Who's Out? LB edition

Well, Friday was report card day, and I'm PO'd at my Biology teacher. I got a C when I should have had a low A or high B. He said I'd get more time on a test because I wasn't near done, and I missed school the day of the test. Well he never gave me more time and I think I got a 30% on the test....I'M NOT KIDDING. Oh well, that's life...

Well, as you know I started this post a week ago. Today I'll talk about the LB group. I was going to do all offense but with the hiring of Nolan....things may change. What I mean is, someone like Erik Walden may fit in Nolan's defense and he may get a few starts, or Jason Taylor doesn't fit and is either traded or placed as a backup. Not saying any of this may happen, but it may, we never know with this team.

Definate

Channing Crowder

Why you diss this guy, I don't know. He's a great run stopper but needs someone else in the middle who can rush the pass real easily, which is why I hope we draft McClain or Spikes in the draft. I think we should also have a NT who can take on 2 blockers so CC and whoever else, can blitz. I know how much you don't like him but, I think Terrence Cody might be the answer....don't kill me....please.

Alright, back to CC. Like I stated above, he great against the run. He can use some improvement on his pass coverage, and that's about it. I saw him have alot of QB pressures this year. And he also got a sack, and his first ever interception, thanks to Earthwake.

With Nolan's defense, everyone gets a chance to blitz. And Nolan has some creative ways to do so, so I expect CC to contribute 3-7 sacks this season.

Cam Wake (aka Earthwake)

He's starting this year...end of story. Nolan is going to fall in love with him. Who needs Dumervil, when we got Wake? Alright...maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm sure most of you will agree with me. If Porter leaves (via cut, trade) Cam is the most explosive pass rusher on the team.

Everytime he was in, he constantly collapsed the pocket, and rushed the QB. His most memorable game, was the first Buffal game, a day we will remember...3.5 sacks. Another great play, was when he pressured Tom Terrific, and made him throw it to a player....that wasn't in NE uniform, but the Channing Crowder!

It seems every game he had a nice play. I know he will get alot more playing time next year, but will he start? We'll just have to find out.

Iffy

The rest of the LB's are iffy, cause i don't know what Nolan's defense will look like.

Jason Taylor

Well, we'd like to thank you for coming back JT. You helped us win a few games, including the 2nd Jets game when you returned a fumble for a TD.

During the week, I read that JT wants to play next year, and hopefully with the Phins. I see him getting resigned, and if he doesn't, I'm scared of him going to the Pats.

If JT wants to play another year, let him. If Nolan's defense is all about great blitz packages, then why not have the active leader in NFL sacks stay? C'mon it's real simple. I see JT staying another year.

Star-divide

Akin Ayodele

I'm very disappointed with his performance this year. He missed so many tackles, and those led to big plays. I was so excited to see his perfomance this year, cause he had a great season last year, but sadly his performance declined. Everyone on the D, had tackling problems this year, I don' know why though.

I do not see Akin in a Phins uniform next year. I'm hoping we draft Roland McClain or Brandon Spikes in the draft. Even though he's a Parcells guy, I don't see him playing for us next year.

Reggie Torbor

Torbor will be united with his long lost friend, Bill Scheridan. Bill is our new ILB coach, and Torbor may be very productive this year, since he knows Scheridan's LB system.

Torbor made alot of plays this year. A Brees pick, a sack, and a few PDF's. I see Torbor making the team next year, and contributing more.

Charlie Anderson

Another LB, I see making the team. His most memorable game as a Phin, was the Tampa Bay game. 2 sacks and 5 tackles. And when he took Joey Porter,s place, he made some plays. Look forward to seeing him play next year.

Erik Walden

A guy we picked off of waivers last year, from the Chiefs. He's a special teams guy, and could play in the defense this year, if Nolan likes him.

The only reason he's staying is because he contributed 8 special team tackles this year. But, he was in limited action due to injury. So I think he's staying because of special teams.

Bye-Bye

Well, this is the part where I think players are most likely going in the off season.

Quentin Moses

He had one sack this year, and that's about all he contributed. I could be wrong with this pick, but I have a strong feeling he will be cut.

He could be trade bait for a low 5th round pick, or 6th or 7th.

J.D. Folsom

I liked him when we drafted him. Unfortunatly, he was put on the PS.

In the first preseason game, he picked off a pass, and I was hoping he'd make the team. He played in a reserve role 2 times, and contributed on special teams. I see him on the PS next year.

Joey "Peezy" Porter

The cocky loud mouth, who just won't shut it. Great season last year....just plain sucked this year. He said he want's to leave Miami and play near his home town. Don't cut him, trade him.

I'm not going to discuss more on Porter, cause I'll just start cussing at the computer...lol.

Ayodele is gone

No ifs about it, had there been a better backer up front, Wilson would have been just mediocre, as opposed to downright awful.

If Mini Anden and Percy Harvin had a kid, and that kid grew up to play Syracuse basketball….ragnarok.

Ayodele is better than Torbor and I would get rid of Torbor before Ayodele.

Quentin Moses is not gone

I don’t think so anyway. He’s got potential to be a contributor and I think we see more of it this season.

Cameron Wake will take another step toward Elvis Dumervil Lite status this season with Nolan here. Not so many sacks, but not because he can’t, just because I’m not sure we’ll have the personnel to cover his liabilities and allow him every (single) down status quite yet.

I think Jason Taylor stays. As much as he might complain about things, he won’t ask for much more money and wants to retire a Dolphin. He’s going to know Nolan will bring big things for the defense, so we have leverage. I think he starts opposite Wake.

For the ILB thing, we ABSOLUTELY need a change. But here’s how I see it:

Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland will look at a ton of ILBs. A ton. And in the end, they will draft two, in similar fashion to the usual draft-two find-(at least)-one strategy.

One of those two will be Darryl Sharpton. The Rev will come to South Florida, and given the chance to start, will complement Channing Crowder very well. He can get off blocks and rush the passer very well, and though he is a bit on the short side, he’s looking to bulk up to the low 240’s and is already a strong dude. The FO noticed his abilities during training, and Sparano has continually praised the UM program for what they’ve done with getting their players NFL-ready and developing their talents. Sharpton could come for a third or fourth round pick, and I see that being entirely worth it.

The other will be Micah Johnson. And, as you noticed, I said Channing Crowder would be starting. I think he will. I see Sharpton complementing CC too well. Micah Johnson will be here and will be groomed for the day CC’s contract expires. MJ is very much like our own CC, however this guy is a more athletic version, which allows him to make more plays. He had a ton of TFL and even got the ball on a running play in which he scored a TD. Talk about versatility. He could come to us in the third or fourth as well.

Two birds, one stone: What are the odds we have two ILB on the field in 3rd down or obvious passing situations? We don’t need to spend a first or second round pick on players who play 67% of the snaps on defense, and Sharpton/Johnson have all the talent necessary to start in this defense with NFL experience and Nolan’s coaching.

I fully believe Johnson has the same amount of potential as Brandon Spikes, if not more, and can be had a round or two later. The only reason BS is considered second round is because he WAS considered first round before he exposed his flaws this past season. Rarely do first round locks fall too much farther than a round due to subpar senior showings.

Please!

Crowder blitzing more? Every time this bum blitzes he runs right into a blocker and gets locked up. He’s another Peezy! If you’re going to run your mouth, then make a freaking play! Making a tackle 5-6 yards down field is nothing to be excited about.

I agree on Moses...

I cant see them getting rid of him. He got along real well will Taylor and Porter and they said he really stepped his game up and they thought that he was JTs future replacement.

Well now Porter is saying he never said he wanted out (cough Lmao)

but really people do you think we will drop this guy before 3/5 so we don’t have to pay him his bonus……I doubt that, if Porter is going it will be from trading his a$$ but to who Oak,KC who knows but I hope we get something decent for him maybe we can get someone to bite for a second rounder but I doubt it

I Really Don't Understand The Crowder Love

The main purpose of an ILB is to tackle the ball carrier. Crowder only did that 51 times in ’09. This is an average of 3.9 tackles per game (he only played 13 games). Yet the guy that everyone wants to run out of town, Adoyele, had 71 tackles this year (4.4 per game). If my math is correct that is 20 MORE than Crowder. And yet I constantly read statements like “Crowder is a great run stopper” on the website.

Let’s get real. There were 94 LB’s in the NFL with more tackles than Crowder in ‘09. 94! That isn’t total defensive players, that is only LB’s! There are LB’s listed with more tackles that played in only 6 games! 6 games compared to 13! In a defense that is suppose to have LB’s make the majority of the tackles, a DE (Randy Starks) and a Nickle CB (Nate Jones) had more tackles than Crowder.

So stop saying things like “Crowder is a GREAT” anything, because he isn’t. If being 95th in the league at the one thing that you are counted on doing, tackling, is “Great”, Patrick Wilis is Superman, because he had 3x the number of tackles that Crowder did last year.

Here is a link to LB tackling stats for ’09. You need to go to the bottom of the 2nd page to find Crowder.

Crowder is a waste of money

we need to shed that contract right now while we can

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

I'm not so sure Folsom is gone because he is a rookie

and he has good cover skills. If I remember correctly that is everyone’s knock on our LB core. But he might go if he does’nt show a big enough improvement from last year.
