The Breakdown: Vol. 1

Hey everyone, welcome to "The Breakdown: Vol.1" I've been reading alot of fanposts recently and I realized that there's a lot of dvision and talk and so forth about what this team is and what it needs.

So here I am to the rescue.

In this series of posts Im going to be breaking down what where we are and what we need in terms of upgrading. Ill be doing position by position, but each post will contain several positions so that I can get in an edition each week by the time free agency rolls around. Basically Ill be looking at this statistically and trying to keep my own opinions out in order to be objective as possible. The point here is to show, statistically, who is performing and worth their keep and who is not.

*NOTE* Im not going to include players who spent most of the season on the practice squad. They will be looked at like free agents and draft picks; guys who may or may not have the potential to upgrade a position on the roster

Star-divide

For this edition Ill be focusing on qaurterbacks and running backs. Lets start with QB's cuz itll be short and sweet.

Quarterbacks

Who we have: Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, Tyler Thigpen, Pat White

What we know: Henne will most likely be our starter with Thiggy on back up duties. White likely will be number 2 though so we can use him in the game and Penny is likely on his way out

Analysis: Lets start with Henne:

-Wonder why he deserves to be the starter and probably will be (even if Penny wants to compete and is healthy enough to do so)? CP10 is 33 years old and has an injury riddled history. Henne is a baby in comparison at 24. While some may argue that CP10 deserves a chance to win the top job I just dont see it playing out that way. Penny fell into this regimes lap and was signed to hold the team together and to be a teacher to Henne. Well CP10 got hurt and Henne was given the reigns, even if that wasnt the plan. Why on earth would a regime pass on Ryan and Flacco (who were more higly touted than Henne) and draft Henne to obviously groom him, and then allow him to worry about winning his starting job back after he preformed admirably this past season? It wouldnt make sense, and based on what weve seen out of this regime they are focused on the future and the future is Henne. God bless CP10 for all he did for us and I would love for him to stay as a backup but Henne deserves to be the "guy" now. Plain and simple. And a similar  argument can be made for Henne vs. Thigpen. Just incase my reasoning wasn't enough compare these stats from this season:

-Henne finished the season with completion percentage of 60.8. Not bad eh? And better than the likes of Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler, Donavan Mcnabb, and Carson Palmer. Keep in mind though that Henne didnt play in 2 games, but considering the weapons the others I listed had and the experience (minus Ryan), that looks pretty damn good.

-Henne also finished 22nd in yards per pass attempt with 6.38, but just a yard separates him from Kurt Warner, who finished 12th. Not bad, not bad.

-The knock is that he finished with more interceptions (14, good for 11th in the league) than td's (12, good for 24th and tied with Sanchez) but he did finish with a 75.2 qb passer rating good for 22nd in the league, which was within 10 points of Jason Cambell, who finished in the 15th.

-The point here is that while Henne definitly had his ups and downs during his first season of starting, he pushed on through and we watched him grow every weak. He even had several nice comeback drives, showed great poise in the pocket at times, and displayed good footwork along with that canon arm. Give him time. He's done enough to deserve it.

The rest:

-There's really not to say about the rest because we all know that Thiggy will be nothing more than a backup (and a damn good one too which is great for us), White will continue to grow in many ways (and who knows what plans this regime has in store for him) and that we would all love CP10 back but its not likely. He's a gamer and he wants to start. To play him against Henne, will only hurt Henne IMO and he would probably win out anyway as he just as a much higher ceiling at this point. This is Henne's team now, and if I were willing to bet, I think Penny knows that too and will try to find work elsewhere if he thinks he can start.

Conclusion: Were set at this position for quite some time it seems. No additions are needed.

Running Backs

Who we have: Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Lou Polite, Patrick Cobbs, Lex Hilliard

What we know: Polite is not very polite, Williams apparently will be done after this year, Brown should be ready and good to go when camp starts, Same for Cobbs, and Lexy is definitly sexy

Analysis: Polite:

-He got robbed. End of story. Tim Graham can do you know what to my you know what for his comments that Polite, while great this season, didnt deserve a pro bowl bid. Im not even going to touch that one. Today's been a good day and I dont want to ruin it.

Cobbs:

-We love him. The coaches love him. His teammates love him. One way or another Cobbsy will be back and causing damage in some form or another, whether its crushing peeps on special teams or giving defenses headaches because we have "one more effing guy" that they cant seem to stop.

Hilliard:

-Oh sexy lexy (best nickname ever?). How are hearts were warmed during that preseason game against the Panthers. and then again when you finished the season with 3.9 yards a carry, scored a td, and got us 5 first downs. Sure you didnt play much till the end and even that was limited, but hey you were a sixth round pick from Montana and yet you still punished defenses on every one of your 23 carries this season. I hope to see your role expanded next season because I want see just how much punishment you can ram down opposing defenses throats.

Williams:

-Williams without pot; great, Williams with pot; aimless wonderer of Austrailian deserts, a.k.a not so great. Williams is quite the story isn't he? But for all his shortcomings in the past, you have to simply admire a guy who is 32 years old, split carries with Brown for half the season and yet still finished with 1121 yards on the ground, good for tenth in the league, and averaged 4.7 yrds per carry. Very, very impressive. Sure he had butterfingers sometimes (sometimes meaning in the worse time possible), but hey, when was the last time a 32 year old back was able to put together a season like his? The downside here is that he's not getting any younger (though he will still be highly productive, assuming Brown and Cobbs are at full strenght all season and it wont be his load to carry) and that aparently he's riding off into the sun after next year. Will he stay after next year? If were close to making a run,I believe he just might.

Brown:

-Ronnie Brown. Arguably the most talented back to ever wear a dolphins uni (defintly one of the best in terms of talent). Will he be back? Will he get hurt again? Just like Matty pointed out in his post on which injured players will return or not next season, we all want him back because honestly, we all know what a beast he is and what he means to the wildcat. Im of the opinion, like most of you Im sure that, when healthy, he's a top 5 back in this league hands down. So I wont sit and spew out stats because honestly we dont need them (however it is of note that he was averaging 4.4 yrds per carry before his injury). He is indeed a question mark and alot of it depends on the CBA which may or may not get a facelift so to speak. Ill go on the assumption that it wont be fixed and that he'll be a RFA. Which means hell be here for 5 mil. Do  Ihope we keep him and sign him to a long contract? Hell yes I do. He has injuries yes, but not a lot of mileage and lets be real here, running backs get hurt all over the place so is it so crazy to ignore his injury prone past? I dont. Especially when two of those injuries were freak accidents and his new knee didnt seem to be a problem for him at all. But who knows what will happen so I guess we'll wait and see

Conclusion: While Id love to see what Kory Sheets can do (practice squader) he most likely wont be the one to replace Brown if we lose him after next year or trade him/cut him. Or Williams either for that matter. The point is, after 2010 we will most likely need a new young back of potential elite talent to compliement whoever is still left or be the leading man. Id love to get C.J. Spiller in Aqua and Orange but I just dont see it happening unless we lose out on who were targeting and trade down. Jonathan Dwyer from Georgia Tech is another pipe dream but unlikely to land here. Personally I think Dexter McCluster out of Ole Miss would be a phenomal addition and, as of right now, would be available later on, say the third round or so, but again that could change. Here are some videos of the top backs in the draft who I think would fit in great here if we were to land them somehow:

First Rounders (projected):

C.J. Spiller

Jonathan Dwyer

Second Rounders (projected):

Jahvid Best

Toby Gerhart

Third and Fourth Rounders (projected):

Anthony Dixon

Dexter McCluster (chris johnson anyone?)

Ben Tate

-Hope yall enjoyed the videos. I would love to have any one of those guys honestly and I would say its a good bet one of them wears aqua and orange this season. With Brown in limbo and Ricky on his way out after this season apparently, i think it's higly likely (and needed) that we take a potentially explosive back in this draft

Well that concludes Volume 1 of the "Breakdown". Hope yall enjoyed the insight (not much I know) I have to offer and can use this post and the ones to follow (and Ill be sure to link them all together) to help in your evaluations of the players we have and some of the prospects that we might end up with. Let me know what yall like and dont like and Ill work in improvements for the Vol. 2.

One comment...

1 yard less in the yards/attempt metric for a QB is huge. For instance, Peyton Manning’s career yards/attempt is 7.7 while CP-10 (one of the best dink/dunker’s around) is 7.2.

As for the QB rating system – it tends to favor west coast schemes and to nobody’s surprise, the top guy is Steve Young a product of the famous 49ers scheme.

Like you though, I like what I saw in Henne enough to feel good about him starting next year.

cp's ypa is that high

because its exactly that: yards per attempt… and when u dont throw many incompletions ur gonna have a high ypa

For not wanting to put much bias in, this post is loaded with it.

I said it before and I will say it again Thigpen deserves a chance to fight for the starting job. He is just as good as Henne is right now, on paper and on the field. Thigpen can run and catch. He obviously can throw too. Besides your QB analysis I agree with most of it. I would love to see Spiller in teal & orange but I just don’t see it happening.

Thigpen was traded to this team because we needed a backup

not to compete with Henne. Henne was this regimes hand picked golden boy. youre right, it may sound biased but to be fair Henne is this regime’s guy and thats why he’ll be the starter and not thiggy.

Really? No way.

Thigpen will definitely not get a good look.
He’s going to remain the backup on this team for many years to come.

He was traded here to be a backup, and that is where he will remain. Otherwise, he may have gone to the numerous other teams that needed a starting QB.

Why is McCluster getting so many votes?

because he’s getting buzz at the Senior Bowl? I’ll say it. He’s not a starting RB in the NFL. Ever. He’s nowhere Chris Johnson, who is 3 inches taller, almost 40 lbs heavier, and more than a 10th of a second faster. He’s not even Sproles, who is 20 lbs heavier. McCluster will be a return specialist, slot WR, and a cool 3rd down weapon out of the backfield. If he’s your starting RB, you have no starting RB.

Spiller on the other hand, is only 5 lbs lighter than Johnson and is faster than McCluster. He’s the only guy in this draft that projects to being a star RB IMO. Maybe I sound biased because I’m driving that bandwagon, but there’s a reason I’m so high on Spiller and that’s cuz he’s a legit back. I’ll call him Reggie Bush with more decisiveness running inside.

Also, Dwyer sucks. He’s slow, has no burst, and runs high. He’s gonna get drafted 2 rounds too high because of that goofy offense allowing him to run by LB’s that didn’t see him. He won’t be able to carry an offense from the Tailback position.

I don't know how trick play ability means he'll be very good.

But I’d love to hear your reason for that..

Either way, IMO, he’ll be nothing more than a goal line back at best, and that’s if he stops running so high.

End arounds, option plays (which we ran a few), etc…not to mention use for us specifically in the wildcat. With his experience, can you imagine lining him up with brown in WC? And dwyer is faster than you think…wait till his pro day

Dwyer doesn't run end arounds

and he was in the Triple Option, much different than the Spread Option we tried with Pat White. I’m not worried about his time in the 40 at his pro day, I watched him play, and he doesn’t have a 2nd gear, and he doesn’t have a burst through the hole. I just don’t see the upside with him as an NFL back, except, as I said, a short-yardage guy like LenDale White.

I Voted for him because

I can’t see spending a first round pick on C.J. Spiller with all the glaring holes we have to fill. McCluster is a player with great talent in need of development for the NFL level. However, we have at least one year to get him developed and he will at most cost a 3rd round pick vs burning our 1st for a sideline roamer this year that MAY take over for Ronnie next year.
With all the talent in this draft, we need to use a first round guy to pick the best available player that fixes one of our problems and RB is currently behind ILB, NT, OLB, WR, OG and TE. Spiller is a good pick but I’d rather get a back with huge talent and athleticism while also addressing those many other needs. I also don’t trust that Jahvid Best is worth our #2.

Trust me

I like McCluster, but he does nothing for us past this season. I’m looking at the long term, and Ronnie/Ricky will not be here more than one more year. I believe we need to deal Ronnie now, because he’s one more injury from being pretty much worthless, and he’s going to be 29 this year (30 years old is more often than not the death knell for RBs). I think RB is actually a much bigger need than you suggest, because we are without a RB after next year. Unless you think that Cobbs and Hilliard can handle the load, in which case, I want some of those Aqua-colored glasses you got on lol.

I also have faith that our FO can find guys to play LB, NT, and TE later in the draft, as well as filling some of those needs in FA. I also don’t think OG is higher on the list than RB, because we have 2 starters and a solid backup.

My point is, don’t sleep on the RB need, we are one Ronnie Brown injury (close to a sure bet at this point) away from seeing 33 year old Ricky carrying the load again. We are one season away from not having a starting caliber back.

I want McCluster

But nothing earlier than the 4th round. I just really like the guy, I am a fan of him where ever he goes.

I thought he would be a 3rd or 4th rounder before January, but now that he is getting hyped up in the Senior bowl my dream of mid round selection may not come true. I think he being drafted in the 2nd or earlier 3rd is reaching on him. My biggest concern is his size 165 and durability in the league.

Why do you think OG is a need?

I feel we have great depth with Smiley, Garner, Thomas and even Berger. Yes, Smiley has difficulty staying healthy and Thomas has yet taken over the RG spot, but Garner was impressive filling in for him with the possibility of even being the starter coming out of TC. Berger backing up those three is a luxury. How high of a pick would you want to spend on a guard? I would go higher than a 6th.

by picklescapone on Jan 28, 2010 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

I placed OG on the list because of Depth

We currently have 4 RBs, 4OGs, and 3 TEs. All are capable but after the starters there is some significant dropoff in ability or playing experience. Of those 3 positions, only the depth at RB appears stable enough. All four of our RBs played big roles this past season and all but Cobbs got starting jobs at one point or another. Ronnie is injury prone and Ricky is likely done with football after this year, but we have two guys waiting in the wings to replace them pluce Kory Sheets on the practice squad. That means even if Ricky leaves and Ronnie goes down with injury, we have capable (not great) RBs to fill in, but our O-line suffers when Smiley get s injured (as common as Ronnie getting injured) and our other guys get banged up.
We had more injuries on our OL than a construction site full of guys with Parkinsons disease. I wouldn’t spend a high pick on a guard but I’m saying the depth need is (pretty much) always there. Also if Donald Thomas can make some major strides and stay healthy, we could have one of the top 5 O lines in the league for a couple of years to come.
Our 3 TEs could be improved with one above average TE in the mix (but just how effective Kory Sperry can be is unknown). Fasano might take a hike (if someone if dumb enough to break his bank) and that would leave a gaping hole at TE.
In short, we have more RBs right now than we need so the position steps to the rear in terms of importance back with OG and TE. Factor in that next year we can focus on a RW or RB style running back (depending on how Hilliard and Sheets come along throughout the year/if Cobbs can step into RW shoes) in the draft or FA and there really becomes little need for a RB this year but if one is available for a good steal then we may as well pull the trigger. If Spiller fell to our spot in round 2 I could see getting him but otherwise I would burn anything prior to a 3rd round pick on a RB.

except I don’t like Spiller all that much either, not at 12th anyway, he’s a great change of pace back maybe, but I don’t like him as an every down back, sol I don’t like any of the backs coming out this year, not as starters anyway.

I see Chris Johnson toting the ball an awful lot, and Spiller has the same body type. I don’t think he’s AS good an inside runner, but IMO, he’s better than Reggie Bush running between the tackles, and will only get better with experience in the league. I feel like Spiller is much more than a change of pace and I think he can be a 20-25 touch (catches, runs, etc) a game guy.

He’s playing for his job right now, and if he gets it all together and becomes an every down back, then there’s plenty of precedent for a guy like Spiller

That maybe 4 or 5 years down the road he becomes an every down back?

That is just not 12th overall potential IMO, Bush is a dangerous player, but he was drafted too high.

I don’t want to make the same mistake with Spiller.

A feature back under 200lbs is indeed rare, not impossible, but rare, and thats all I’m pointing out really.

Spiller is one cheeseburger from 200

I don’t think it’ll take Spiller 4-5 years to be an every down feature back. I think it happens right away. But we won’t agree on when he should be picked just because we don’t agree on the type of player he can become lol

I think, unless Berry is there, that Spiller will be the best player available at 12

I'm all for it

except not too far, because SF has 2 picks at 13 and 17, NYG picks at 15, then you have PIT, HOU, Cincy, and NE all before 22… and any of those teams could swipe Spiller from us. I’d be weary to go down too far if we are targeting CJ. 12 isn’t bad value for him IMO. Didn’t Knowshon Moreno go at 12 last year?

I get what your saying,

but the Johnson comparison is exactly why I’m not big on him, guys with that body type usually don’t succeed in the NFL, C Johnson is more the exception than the rule, and Spiller is smaller AND slower, so too much risk in my opinion, he is probably more like Bush, a dangerous player, but not a every down back.

by uncle finster on Jan 27, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

my point with the rb's in this post

was to point out that I think it would be prudent of us to go after a guy who can be a good compliment in the very least…and this draft is full of those. I dont see this regime focusing on rb when we already have so many and we have other, more pressing needs. I do think we will pick up somone like McCluster or Tate in the third or later though

I don't know about us taking a RB possibly in the 3rd

Think about the needs that are more pressing: OLB, ILB, NT, WR, TE, FS. To me, taking a RB before any of these positions would be a risk we cannot afford to take. Both Cobbs and Hilliard can be competent 2nd string RBs. We all say how nice it was to have Ricky backing up Ronnie. I say ride that horse one more year and take a chance on a RB next draft to compete with Ronnie.

good anaylysis

even though thiggy is a great backup, i really think we should use him for trade bait. There are teams out there that need a solid qb, and thiggy would definitely get their attention. Its just scarey to think of only shrimp patty backin up henne. If we can get penne to stay, i say trade thiggy for a draft pick, or a reciever.

Pat White will be have gained 15 lbs of muscle mass. Theres no way the FO lets him go through another season in the NFL under 200 lbs unless they move him to WR. Even in that scenario, they still will bulk him up.

LOL you actually thought I ment for every down!?!

No way would I want White and Thigpen lined up as wideouts every play. I know all are WR’s are 10x better then Thigpen and White at catching the ball. Let’s say for one wildcat play as an example you got White line up on the outside and Thigpen next to him on the inside. Then you got Ronnie or any of are other RB lined up on the outside. leave Henne at QB or if you want Ronnie hike it Thigpen can cut up the middle of the field White can run an easy post route, and then the other RB on the other side comes towards Henne or Ronnie etc etc etc….. I’m not gonna write out the whole play but you get the gist of what I’m trying to say.

I'm talking strictly wildcat plays with Thigpen, White, Ronnie and Henne

throw in another blocking TE and a RB (I would like see Cobbs come back at full strength and play his same role in the wildcat) and that’s all you would need on the field to confuse the shit out of any Defense.

it’s illegal unless we activate all three QB’s on gameday, instead of having the customary 3rd “emergency” QB.. I get what you’re saying… but why in the world do we want Pat White and Tyler Thigpen running pass routes when we have WR’s that can do it? What’s the point?

Oh i see what your saying. No I'm saying officialy make White WR instead of a QB

keep Henne and Thigpen as QB. Running a route in the wildcat is different though lets say you get White coming on a reverse and Thigpen run the route or the other way if you like. There would be two QB’s technically on the field not 3. You got Ronnie possibly to do the same thing (even though I hope we trade IMO) or Cobbs lol. White would be a WR with the threat of being able to pass. LMAO I’m trying to explain whats in my head and it’s not coming out. Give me a day or two and I’ll make a post explaining it,

lol I think I got you

you’re saying that White is a WR in the Antwaan Randle-El mold, a guy that is a full-time WR with the potential for passing it in trick plays. I like that. I thought they should’ve done that when he was first drafted. I like the idea of throwing him a screen and the safeties having to sit back for a beat because he can always rise up and chuck it. But I’m not understanding why Thigpen would need to be in there.. Henne can line up in the shotgun, you can have White or Ronnie in motion for the handoff, and either of them can then throw. Nice little wrinkle, but no need for the extra QB IMO.

well the Thinking behind Thigpen (lol besides my obsession with him) is you can line him up anywhere “with some limitations anyways, but still a threat there nonetheless”. Say we have him run a reverse and he has the option to run or throw. I don’t believe he’s as big as they say either, cuz on paper they’re saying he’s bigger than Ginn, both taller and heavier, lol, I have eyes, i’ve seen them standing next to each other, and White is DEFINITELY smaller than Ginn.

I’d say he’s about 5’10" and 170lbs, since Ginn is supposed to be 5’10" 175.

He ain't THAT small when compared to other WR's his size

Antwaan Randle-El – 5’10, 185
Roscoe Parrish – 5’9, 175
Steve Smith (CAR) – 5’9, 185
Santana Moss – 5’10, 200

and our guy
Pat White – 6’1, 190

He just looks teeny tiny at QB. He’s actually good size for a WR.

No the plane ride over is actually going to suck.

I made it all over but we mostly stayed in Melbourne. The Gold Coast area is also awesome. Weird thing but the Gold Coast has some pretty good Mexican food and of course some great sea food.

He’s a cross between Michael Pitman and Lorenzo Neal. He has speed . It may not show with his forty time.

by FinFanFromCA on Feb 1, 2010 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

It didn't show in games either

I don’t think he’s all that fast. And the big knock on him is that his legs go completely dead on contact and he has no drive.

Wow Really

He is one of those guys that plays at the same speed pads or no pads. I’ll bet he has more plays over 10yards than all these guys. Not sure though. If you want to say he doesn’t have a second gear I’ll agree. I didn’t see to many people catch him on alot of 40yard runs.

by FinFanFromCA on Feb 1, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

definitely no second gear

but you also have to take into account competition. Not too many guys with NFL speed chasing him in those games either. I just didn’t see him finish runs all the time, and his legs don’t keep driving when he’s hit, like Blount does

Competition?

Boise? Cinn? Wiscon? He put 250 yards on Boise. 1800 yards and he didn’t play a full 4qtrs in most games. Blout great back, but, anyone that goes into the stands after fans. big red flag no thanks.

I know you didn’t. I’m just say to those mentioning Blount. I don’t want him on my team. I can forgive a cheap shoot on the Boise player. You go into the stand though. That’s a good comparision for Blount or Mathews who had more yards agianst Boise?

by FinFanFromCA on Feb 1, 2010 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Blount's pretty good

his stock dropped because of the incident, best steal in the draft.
