Dolphin Mock Drafts Around the 'Net

Barring any breaking news, here's what I plan to do every Friday from now until the NFL Draft - which begins on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 eastern. I plan to do a roundup of some of the top NFL mock drafts on the net and post them here for quick viewing. And if you want to read more about that particular mock, you can simply click the name of the mock, which will be linked to the source.

Why am I doing this? Two reasons. One - I find it interesting seeing various predictions all in one place. And two - it seemed like this was a popular feature last offseason leading up to the 2009 draft.

The list of mocks is after the jump. And as we get closer, the list will get longer and (hopefully) we'll have some mock drafts that go into the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I know they are never really accurate. But it makes for some good discussion/debate.

Enjoy...

That's it for now. I hope to have all of the slots above filled with the more respected mock drafts as we inch closer. There are a million mock draft sites out there but I try to focus on those that have been around longer and have a somewhat reliable history.

As you can see, the biggest areas of need are highlighted here as expected. Most have the Dolphins addressing any combination of the following: inside linebacker, outside linebacker, nose tackle, and wide receiver.

It's not a shock. And I expect to see more and more of this as we near draft day.

Wow

I didn’t think anybody could make bucky’s draft look sane and the Draft King comes along with that pile of garbage. Hell, the Burger King could have put together a better draft.

There's a fine line between hopeful and desperate. Just look @ Jets fans.

Well...

consider that

a – Kyle Orton is unsigned for next year, so as of now, Denver may be in the QB market

b – someone, some team will draft Tebow, probably earlier than later – even if it is to merely put fans in the stadium for a few years (Jax). As for Denver, McDaniels has shown himself to have a sizeable ego, so it would not be totally out of the question.

WR?

I don’t see the Tuna taking a wide out with so many other talents at #12, maybe if he’s able to trade out of this spot and further down in the 1st round would he consider a WR.

He did take Keyshawn #1 overall

It would not suprise me

And Drew Bledsoe

And Jake Long….

Good luck finding a trend with those 3 different top selections, except maybe that they were all on offense.

Parcells wasn't with the Jets when they took Keyshawn in '96

The Tuna did draft a receiver in the first round of 1996, but it was Terry Glenn, and he only did that because Robert Kraft basically held a gun to his head.

That would be a terrible idea, IMO, because then you are back to square one with 2 rookies in the secondary (albeit not technically with Vontae, but you get the gist).

I watched this guy for the past couple years (Go Bulls), and he’s definitely a beast… but he’s more of a down lineman in a 4-3, not sure if he can drop back into coverage if he were an OLB? Guy’s a stud, though, no question.

NFL draft 101 got it right last year

Its interesting to look back and compare it to what actually happened. I’m amazed someone predicted Pat White. Not a great choice by the trifecta. The guy has some potential…but the fins needed to use that pick in other areas. Oh yeah..sorry.. but McClain will be gone by the time we get up.

by srqsam on Jan 22, 2010 2:06 AM EST reply actions

Well, not necessarily ...

We’ll have a better gauge of where McClain will go after the combine, when a few players will move up with solid interviews and strong 40-yard dash results.

If McClain is gone, though — and we can’t trade down — I am all for taking Dan Williams. He might not be a reach at #12 by the time April rolls around, and he’d fulfill a big-time need for our defense.

I’d much rather land McClain, though. Our defense needs a leader like him.

Draft Tek

Hey guys. I’m actually the Dolphins correspondent at Draft Tek, setting up the team needs matrix for the computer program. However, it isn’t all left up to the computer. I can “grab” players I think will most interest the team and for the last 5 weeks I’ve been trying to nab Rolando McClain at 12. Obviously it just isn’t happening. The reason I’ve had Bryant at 12 the last 3 weeks is because it was requested by a reader, although he was my second choice behin McClain. I’ll look to ease the Bryant grab next week and see how the picks turn out. As of now we have a full 5 rounds mocked and within the next 2 weeks we’re going a full 7. Obviously a lot will change with postseason all-star games and the combine.

If you want to help mold the Dolphins picks, feel free to leave me comments/emails on priority code settings for the mock or your general ideas. You can contact me at Dolphins@DraftTek.com . Our new mocks are usually realeased each Wednesday by noon. You can also follow me on Twitter (@TCMia_JMays). I usually preview the mock on Tuesday before it’s officially released.

I’d love to here more Dolphins fans inputs on the team.

Nope, no emails yet, Mosul.

I hear ya, Shelton. I want McClain too but in the most recent CMD he was selected 5th overall to Kansas City. Very unlikely he’ll make it down to 12 any time soon. We’ll see how he performs in workouts the next 2 months though. As to Coleman, he’s slated at pick 144 (currently 17th pick of round 5) to, ironically, K.C. again. He’s ranked as the 144th player on our “big board” and as the 5th best SS available. Obviously that’ll fluctuate over the next 3 months. I think the draft evaluators see him as a tad too slow for FS in the NFL, hence the switch.

Dohboy, I really don’t see the need for another CB (well at least at 12). Reading most of the comments on this article most people agree with that. No need to move Vontae or Sean around. We have 3 solid CBs with Will Allen coming back too.

Thanks Patssuck (and I agree). I actually have been a member since April 2008, just don’t post much stuff or participate in game day things. The day job prohibits me from much of that.

Definitely let the comments come in and feel free to email me. The more fan participation and comments the better!

I can live with Bryant in the first round, though I don't think we will do it...

I would prefer we pass on him, even if McClain is gone, but that’s just me.

The mock above that I think really misses is Football Draft Analysis. Taking Bryant in the first, and then grabbing a Safety in Chad Jones hurts. Yes, we could improve at Safety, but you have completely ignored the needs at NT and LB, which I think are WAY above Safety, and above WR as well.

IMO - I don't believe we take a WR even if it is someone as talented as DEZ.

Bills not going to take a chance on someone who could or might be able and be able to pick up the game at the NFL level. I beleive he could, but Bill isn’t going to be around forever and he wants to see immediate results from his first and second rounders. It has to surely be a defensive pick early.

by D0lphins4Life on Jan 22, 2010 9:29 AM EST reply actions

he wants to see immediate results from his first and second rounders

So I guess thats why he picked Henne and White in the 2nd rd the last 2 years?

Bill isn’t going to be around forever and he wants to see immediate results

Parcells is here to rebuild this franchise. He has a four yrs contract, with 2 years left. Bill isn’t thinking like most of us last year that we are winners now, like most of you all were thinking after last year.

Bill will continue what he is being paid to do. He will pick the best player that is available to us at any of our needs. Regardless of position.

Great Job Matty

I believe that the front office will draft ILB, NT, OLB in the first 3 rounds. It may not be in this order. If McLain is there at 12 no doubt they pick him up. If not trade down to get more picks, hopefully in trading down they pick up an extra 2nd.

by Ralph In Michigan on Jan 22, 2010 10:05 AM EST reply actions

No McClain then trade down but.....

We would need a dance partner. Trading down makes sense in this scenario, but what if we get stuck at #12? Should Miami grab Dez Bryant or CJ Spiller? Alot of guys here want a #1 WR, but Ronnie’s injury prone and at the end of his contract. Ricky says he’s one more and done.

Couldn't agree more...

Benn is a 2nd rounder. If they do select a WR at 12, it’s Bryant. Like many have said, I think it’s McClain at 12, or bust. I’m sure somebody below us is licking their chops about the possibility of getting Bryant, so hopefully we can find a trade partner if McClain isn’t there.

Chad Jones is an interesting pick in the 2nd round, incidentally. Big hitter, obviously a great athlete (played baseball for LSU as well). Maybe Spiller slides down to round 2 (doubtful).

Great Report!

Love that all the mocks are in one place! Those who have the Fins drafting a WR and #12 are too fixed on position need. It just won’t happen folks. That’s not what Parcells/Ireland/Sparano will do. Plus, we have bigger needs on D where the pick can have immediate impact.

by Big Dawgg on Jan 22, 2010 10:28 AM EST reply actions

The thing with the 12 slot

is that at least several of the players we might target could easily be gone, including McClain & Bryant.

The X factor in all this & probably the most important thing, is we don’t know what position the front office has zeroed in on OR maybe they are looking at the best player available at 12 seeing as we have several areas of need.

*Personally, I believe we do take Dez Bryant if he is on the board (which he won’t be). If we get Dez Bryant, all we have to do is make a move to get to the front of the second round and get my BOY Brandon Spikes. THAT would be the draft coup of the century.

As long as we can find a way to get Mcclain, Spikes or Bryant, I will be very satisfied.

Regardless of what angle people have...

there’s going to be a good player available at 12 that will be a significant upgrade – be it Bryant at receiver, McClain at LB, etc

I think the early teen to mid-20’s is probably the best value in terms of talent/risk/money in the first round.

As much as I would love Dez....

We really really need help on D. Rolando McClain if he’s available would be the best pick at #12.

defence wins championships

fellas, all your ideas have some sense of importance, but we need to build this defense into a top 5 all round, the trifectawill somehow address our WR, lets finish getting a young Defense and then address our #1 WR

free agency shows alot of talent

In areas of need, pittsburgh isnt gonna keep everyone and three free agents to look at are Hampton,Parker, and Bryant. Add to the fact Dansby is a free agent, and arizona may even be willing to part with a trade for Porter, idk maybe a third rounder. With this we filled three areas of need, and after drafting Clemons last year, could look no further than Tampa Bay for a stop gap solution at FS. Also note, all of these guys are rated middle of the pack with exception of Bryant, the seventh rated wr prospect hitting free agency. This would allow us to plug a few leaks and draft lb lb lb in the draft.

Another possibillity is Fujita from New orleans and Trotter from Philly, thus giving us the chance to add depth in the draft and not focusing on needs so much.

Imagine ilb: Spikes,Trotter,Crowder
Wr: Antonio Bryant,,Davone Bess,Tedd Ginn jr.,Camarillo,Brian Hartline, the rest can go practice squad
NT:Fergueson,Hampton,Solai
FS: Darren Sharper/Will Allen,Clemons,Majors
OLB:Wake,Fujita,Jason Taylor, and say trade first for rights to sign Dummerville

All of a sudden, both sides of the ball look alot scarrier imo, also note 49rs are probably not going to resign Aubreyo Franklin,so we could also pick up a cheap alternative there for fergueson in case he decides to hang it up

ILBs

Too bad Ndamukong Suh will be long gone by #12 … I noticed the past couple of drafts we have picked more than one player at the same position that we have a need at(Langford & Merling, Sean Murphy & Donald Thomas, Vontae Davis & Sean Smith). I could see us definately taking 2 ILBs in the draft(Mcclain at # 12). Who do you think we could pick up in a later round that would help out our defense???

by Jason Scott_90 on Jan 23, 2010 9:31 AM EST reply actions

Daryl Washington, ILB from TCU

Should be available in round three. This guy was flying to the ball in the BCS game vs. Boise State. The only guy who got there first sometimes was Jerry Hughes (DE). Washington may be a little undersized and needs to put on some more weight, but he’s got that non-stop motor and we got Nolan to coach him up and get him in position. He would be a nice pick along the lines of drafting Sean Smith in the 2nd last year.

There are soooo many variables, many options that could play out...

… before anyone (including the Dolphins) could really make a decision on who they are going to pick in any round, but especially at their first pick.

I especially think it starts at #10 with Jacksonville and #11 with Denver.
[NOTE: Pro Football Talk recently published a story speculating that the NFL owners have agreed to allow Tim Tebow to slide all the way down to Jacksonville in the 2010 NFL Draft. ] That is as political as it gets folks!

With that out of the way, Denver is up. Everyone sees their needs, but it may well hinge on their Brandon Marshall situation. Or, whether Denver sees a greater need on defense.

Miami is actually full of options, and it starts in free agency. Eric Berry, though doubtful he’s around, is not only a need pick, he’s pure athleticism. But Pittsburg has two safeties in free agency with Ryan Clark (30) and Tyrone Carter (34). Yes they’re older, but would allow the Dolphins to look for a safety in later rounds. Enter Rolando McClain (or Terrence Cody) at #12.

My personal favorite will be there, AND is perfect for this team…….. C.J. Spiller! The skills required on offense are greater that those needed on defense. The game is about scoring points (more points than the opponent)… that’s what the offense is about… humiliating the opponents defense. Ricky and Brown do that when they’re on the field. But Ricky is leaving this year and Brown…… well Brown could be leaving sooner… or at least won’t last the season (injury). And this team aint nothing without a running game!

Give me Spiller or give me Jerry Hughes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dez

According to ESPN’s Adam Shefter on his Twitter account, the majority of NFL Scouts/Head of Personnel all rate Dez higher then Crabtree. If Berry is gone at 12, i wouldn’t mind Dez (or McClain).

At least one draft (either SI or SN) had Berry going 13th, i doubt that after the combine, but we have to look at team needs. Rams, Seahawks and Jags (Tebow) will go QB i believe, and at least 3 or so teams will go linemen. You never know, we could be lucky (did anyone think Crabtree will fall to 10?)

It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile

Berry, Bryant, Spiller or McClain, great choices!!

Look, we can mentally masterbate about this draft until the end of April. Mo’s right when he says who expected Crabtree to fall to #10. The good news is that there are a lot of great choices at #12. And probably a lot will be determined by who picks in front of us. Also, there are a lot of real good receivers this year so maybe the phins will wait to round #2. But again, if McClain and Berry are gone, and Dez is on the board, it may be tough passing on him! We will need to be passing TO HIM!

Look, Ricky is done after next year and Ronnie has NEVER been real durable. So lets just wait for 3 more months, Hey look there will be a lot of great players in round #2 as well!

If only we had a way to actually get ahold of the Phins board before the draft.

A long shot but possible

I was thinking about a scenario tha actually could fall in place. McClain with our 1st round pick, Cody with our 2nd Round pick, and Mardy Gilyard with our 3rd round pick. That would be a great first three rounds.

Eric Berry

I know this is all but a dream, but i wish we could land him.
McClain is also on my wish list.

ESPNish.com 2010 mock draft

ESPNish.com has D Williams going to Miami.
Decent breakdown that website. Some other good content too. check it out.

regardless of what happens in front of us, there will be a lot of good choices.

This draft is loaded. There are 50+ really good starters out there. Sooo, as long as we don’t Ginn it, we should be fine. Does anyone have a problem with Dez Bryant, R McClain, Jo haden or Sergio Kindle??

I want to see what we do in Round 2. A. Benn, Terrence Cody, etc
