Top 3: Keep 'em or Dump 'em

In this particular post I wanted to address the top three players I feel the Fins should keep as well as the top 3 that should be packin' it up.  I came up with a short list some obvious, and some not so much but I'd like to know your opinions so please comment as much as you'd like.  I'm not listing guys that are vital to success such as Ronnie Brown or Randy Starks.  No this is about guys that are "on the bubble" and or being closely evaluated by the FO.

Keepers:

1.   Jason Taylor

I know the LB's weren't as good as we would have liked this year, and I'll be the first to admit it.  But it wasn't because of #99.  This guy has played with his hand in the ground his whole career prior to this year.  And while he didn't play like the JT of old, he was pretty effective for a 35 year old guy learning a new position on the fly.  Also keep in mind he was taken out on most passing downs and still had 7 sacks.  In my book that's respectable.  Finally, and most importantly the man bleeds orange and teal, there's not a player that loves being a Fin more than JT.

2.   Channing Crowder

We all get down on him because he's not a great ILB and I totally understand that, who wouldn't want a Patrick Willis type of guy running the defense.  I know i would.  But he's not.  That being said, he was a pretty good compliment to Zack Thomas during his Miami career.  And I believe he can be a nice compliment to whoever our upgrade in the middle will be.  He's a good character guy that gives it everything he has on and off the field.  And though he's a liability in coverage the defense suffered against the run in his absence.  All B.S. aside, he would really benefit from the addition of a stud MLB.

3.   Joey Haynos

This guy is kinda iffy with me, but I do believe that a play-maker in the passing game would help him out tremendously.  He's decent backup with great size which is valuable in the red zone.  He's a damn good blocker in the run game and you'd have to imagine he'd come pretty cheap.

Dumpers:

1.   Gibril Wilson

     Need I say more.

2.   Joey Porter

For all the talk.  For all the antics.  Not a lot of action.  This guy hurts more than he helps.  Sure he had a great season in '08.  And sure he came on strong towards the end of '09.  Sort of.  But when you get right down to it, he's only useful on obvious passing downs.  And there's no guarantee that he'll show up every game.  Then there's the matter of his contract which as big as his mouth and twice as absurd.  Since he and JT don't seem to be able to co-exist do the right thing.  Dump Porter, resign Taylor, draft a replacement, and continue to groom Wake.  This way the FO can save some money and save us all a headache.

3.   Anthony Fasano

Another one year wonder that just did not get it done this year.  I must confess, I was never high on this guy.  But he got on my good side in '08.  '09 of course was an entirely different story as we all know.  Fasano was about as useful as a bikini in Antartica.  Don't get me wrong, Haynos wasn't great either but at least he's cheap, and held on to the ball more.  Traditonally players turn it up a notch during a contract year, guess Anthony didn't get that memo.  Ted Ginn dropped balls as did a lot of guys and get over that.  But Fasano took it a step further by fumbling in key situations (Atlanta), and nobody seems to remeber that at all.  Turnovers are a part of the game we all know that.  You have to expect picks to be thrown, but fumbles are inexcusable and in my opinion so is he.

Keep: Wilson (give him a chance once we get some decent lb’s), Crowder (agree that he’ll benefit fom a stud lb), Ginn (need a deep threat)

Dump: Fasano (bum), Ayodele (plain awful), Porter (old)

I personally would prefer to get a new FS

I don’t want someone who will feed and leech off of the performances of the rest of our players, I want someone who is a playmaker on their own. Sure we can always stick with passable, but why not go for someone with potential for greatness?

You are already guaranteeing Gibril money...

keep him and let him compete with Chris Clemens for the starting FS position… I am not sure it was all Gibril. For all the complaining we do about him, the fact remains he was the #2 leading tackler on the team, behind Y. Bell. It is really sad when your safeties are your leading tacklers. It means that 9 other guys up front were either out of position or missed tackles. Hard to worry about geting beat deep when you have to come up and do the ILBs job(make tackles). It’s not like we are losing much if we keep him and he sucks. In that case you give Chris Clemens a shot. I think he will be the 3rd piece in a very young and talented secondary. He has all the tools and I think he was close to winning the starting job all last year. I think this year he finally beats out Gibril and we never have to worry about
him again because he will be an overpaid backup. But the key is we already shelled out the big bucks for him. At least let him be a backup for us until the guaranteed money runs out … then we can cut him….

I agree

It doesn’t look like Peezy will be back next year. Fasano had a lack luster year because the coaches siad he had to stay in to block more, but even so, he doesn’t look like a #1 TE. The Gerbel might have been saved with the hiring of Mike Nolan. Maybe he can get Gerbel to play better. JT is a leader and should only be used sparingly. He can also share his knowledge with Cameron Wake. As much as I hate Channing running his mouth and not making plays, he seems to have good knowledge of the defense and getting guys lined up. It always seems when he’s out, our defense loses something. Haynos needs to get more involved.

i agree to a certain extent

well all of us as dolphin fans expected much from gerbil wilson….i say we give him one more year and if he chokes when a ball is in his hand to make a pick or a one on one or just getting man handled (jeremy shockey) then he can go bakc to Oakland (the city and team that progresses lol)

now channing is an average linebacker…atleast the guy has heart unlike Mr. J Peezy who talks more than a cuban conversation….i say we get rid of peeeezy and use cameron wake

Our defense wasnt the greatest last season but we did have some close games our mediocre offense did pull some stuff outtta their behinds on some occasions> what im saying is that we should focus on offense this off season…get marshall for that 12th round pick and pick up some defenders on 2nd , 3rd picks

when in doubt...hit a jets fan in the mouth

I also love watching Channing Crowder's interviews....

I would really miss that if he left the team. I loved at the beginning of the season that he was calling the rookies Vontavia, Shawna and Patricia. I can pretty much count on the fact that he is going to make me laugh every time they interview him. I don’t think he is very instinctive as a LB, but who knows, give him a stud MLB to play with and he might start making those big plays. I heard in an interview with JT that he was making fun of JT because he was practicing catching the ball. JT told him something like “that’s why I make big plays, because I practice things like that.” Coincidentally, that was the game Crowder had the interception. Maybe he learned something from JT about expecting to make big plays being a big key to being in the right place to make a big play.

Agree on the keepers

Fasano did good at the end of the season I would place Ayodele or Torbor in the dump instead of Fasano

Taylor should go too

he is just going to take snaps from a guy that will be on the team when we truely contend

Fasano must go

lacked confidence big time. I thought he was going to take a big step forward in 09, but instead took 2 steps back. I want JT here until he retires!! He still makes some big plays. Its hard to comment on the Defense with Nolan coming aboard. He might see something that we are not in our current roster. Also, he will probably find a way to bring in some of “his guys” that he has gained confidence in over the years.

agree

mark bavaro fasano missed big catches all season long, having to block isn’t an excuse. he’s a tight end. i’d like him on a very short leash as backup but if he wants to go explore, let him.
jt brings intangibles and spirit to a team that is building and this you need, and he can be a playmaker and comes at the right salary. til he retires, absolutely!

The loss of David Martin negatively impacted Fasano's year

He drew alot of attention away from Fasano
