Secret Weapon

When you take a look at the premier quarterbacks around the league such as (Kurt Warner, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers, Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers) they all have a correlation to the top recievers in the league (Larry Fitzgerald, Marques Colston, Reggie Wayne, Vincent Jackson, Randy Moss, Miles Austin, Greg Jennings)

Star-divide

Not only do they all share a #1 receiver in common but they all have a arsenal of weapons in their offense to give their quarterback the best possibility to succeed. When you look at Chad Hennes 300+ yard games they all came from coming from behinf efforts to where Henne had to throw 55+ attempts and thats not going to cut it in a 16 game season when you do take in the account of injuries some offensive struggles are understandable but doesnt remove the need for a #1 reciever and a playmaking tight end (ex: Dez Bryant, Aaron Hernandez) and possibly a change of pace, explosive, can score from anywhere on the field type back to change up the power running style of ronnie(ex:joe mcknight)

I agree but ...

I def agree with your thoughts but the honest truth is we need help on defense much more than the offense. I think we win more games with drafting an ILB and 2 OLB over the WR, TE, RB combo you talk about.

The offense IMO will also get better next season with simply Henne having a full offseason of work with the WR as a starter, Ronnie Brown and Cobbs coming back, and the Oline getting better with another season together. Remember this is a young group of players so hopefully for the Dolphins sake they all take a big step together next season.

by the same argument...and I've made it numerous times...

Our defense will get better…..
we started 3 rookies this year…. they will have the full offseason of work.
Not to mention a new Def Coordinator, and LB coaches…..

I’m not arguing we don’t have holes to fix, as we obviously do. But you fill the holes with the best possible options…. BM is our best possible fix to a whole right now.

Use the draft picks to fill “some” holes on Defense, and fix the rest next years draft. But don’t let elite talent slip away.

Defense first .. Offense if possible

Yes we do have young CB’s who will get better but they will not get better if we don’t get a better pass rush or get linebackers who can make a tackle. The O is set in the line and RB’s (for now) and while we may need a true #1 I think that is a luxury not a must-have with the type of offense we run.

In comparsion the foundation on the defense is weak compared to the offense which has a solid young O-line to build from, a staple that will always hold our team together. I like our DE’s and think we could get a solid NT in the later rounds and also pick up a FA (or resign Ferg) to build but ILB and OLB needs that IMO must be addressed. Don’t you think it means something when you get both your safteys leading the team in tackles … not acceptable IMO

With all that being said I still wouldn’t be upset with the pick of Dez but I would still feel the Defense should get the majority of love in the draft

or....

It means they think they can hire guys to improve the ones we already have….so they can focus their attention elsewhere….

there are 2 ways to look at everything..and none of us really really know.

I think we all (including myself) expect them to go 100% defense and improve that way… but you never know.

I’m hearing what you’re sayin’ but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Brandon Marshall is far and away NOT the best possible fix to any hole in any capacity, period.

I know you love the bandwagon, but the wheels are coming off. Not only will we not even attempt to get him, but I think you’d see Wilfork or Boldin here before you see Marshall. And you likely may not even see either of those two.

not true

we need help on our offense because ronnie might not be coming back, our o-line is constantly injured, our wide outs stink, and im not 100 % convinced on henne plus lou could have been a one year thing fasano is a free gent and ricky is old

by Dolphins2010Future on Jan 14, 2010 4:12 PM EST reply actions

Well first off,

Ronnie is under contract for 1 more year unless a new CBA is reached. If one is reached, he is then a restricted free agent, meaning we get high draft picks if someone takes him. Secondly, Grove and Carey were the only o-line guys that suffered bigger injuries. Third, our wideouts do not stink, they are just not #1 receivers. We have an excellent group of #2 and #3 receivers.

And Ricky is old? Well it didn’t really seem to hamper him too much this year with his 1,000 yard season now did it? He also doesn’t have the wear and tear on his body that another RB his age would have if they were the primary back. As for Polite, I don’t think he is suddenly going to forget how to throw a block over the offseason. And Fasano, well we do have 3 other TEs on the team/practice squad in Haynos, Sperry, and Nalbone. I don’t know what to tell you about Henne, if what he showed you this season isn’t enough to convince you he can be our starting QB, then nothing I can say will.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with being an offense guy,

but having a strong defense and a mediocre offense can win you championships, as evident by the Steelers. Not to say a strong offense and weak defense can’t do the same thing, but I just think it’s more difficult. If your defense is strong and you keep your opponents from scoring many points, your offense can afford to not be as strong since they don’t have to put up as many points to stay ahead.

Yes and no

Who did Phillip Rivers have before V Jack stepped up? A TE by the name of Antonio Gates. Now I am not saying that we should get a perrenial TE or we dont need a WR, but what I am saying is a good scheme and a good QB can do it with what he has. The San Diego offense has been good for awhile, and the defense has really helped them out in the past. Right now I see us being closer to them than any other team. We just have a QB that needs more seasoning.

not true

vince has been there but has just emerged and back in the day the had an all-pro runningback by the name of LT..lt isnt the same runner and because of that its not the same offense

by Deuce Black on Jan 14, 2010 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

i just think as long as you can surround your QB with sufficient weapons, you will be fine

now, for a young QB this is even more necessary, so this is why if we can get j ust a #1 receiver, not even a TE, henne will be fine with the running game that this team has

Trying to draft the best "playmaker" available

Charles Rodgers, Darren McFadden, Roy Williams, Heyward-Bey ect… We were guilty of it too with the Ted Ginn pick, when a guy like Patrick Willis is just sitting there! Look how much the 49ers defense has turned it around

by fins24_7 on Jan 14, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Whoa... first of all the lions suck

second of all so do the raiders there is a reason why they consistently have a top ten pick in the draft every year and heyward-bey was a horrible example because crabtree was available that just shows you how incompetent those franchises are. their approach definitely isn’t drafting the best available playmaker its “were picking in the top 5 so we cant miss here”

Look at the Ravens

they win playoff games on the road for a reason, they will run all over you, and kill you with defense

by fins24_7 on Jan 14, 2010 6:23 PM EST reply actions

Last time i checked, New England was a pretty good team at home

The Ravens damn near beat the Colts making Manning look pretty uncomfortable, and which Cardinal team will show up, the one that got beat down at home week 17, or the next week…same opponent, put up 51.
Id take a consistant defense orver a inconsistant offense anyday!

Ah... well, they're playing Baltimore, and neither team is the same as when they first met...

Imo, Colts got weaker and Ravens got stronger… will be a good game, I think.

I concur

And speaking of them, i think that which ever WR becomes available, AB or BM, they will be the first to hop on it because they are that elite receiver away from the super bowl. Look what they did last year and this year. The running game is solid, Qb isnt bad, and defense is great. They are going to be the first to offer up a bunch to get the last cog for their machine. They have that luxury. They have rebuilt this offense after making sure the Defense was still solid. And even with loosing a bunch of players are still a great team.

this is an extremely important draft for the dolphins future

right now we are in the middle of the pack on offense and defense. by the decisions made in this draft we might be influencing the type of football team we will be for the next decade. if we concentrate on offense we might turn out to be a high powered offense with a sub par defense type team. if we concentrate on defense we might turn out to be the shutdown defense with a just enough to get by type offense. or… if we balance it out perfectly we could be superbowl contenders… the future is in ur hands BP… dont screw it up

I recall our defense being a top 5 defense...

for many MANY years during the Zach Thomas, Taylor, Madison, Surtain days….
and I don’t recall us getting all that far in the playoffs…..

and we had a serviceable QB, and average WR’s….much like we have now..just with a better Defense…

Does the QB

make the weapons or does the weapons make the QB? If the QB is truely talented then I think they make the weapons

its really

a cooperative effort like picture tom brady without moss and wes… see what i mean tom would proly look like a decent quarterback but you wont tap into his full potential without some weapons. and without some decent weapon it will put too much pressure on qb witch will lead to mistakes

I think "system" has more to do with it than we give it credit

like when Bill Walsh said that Montana was “part of a system” but of course I really love it when he followed that up with “but Marino was a system!”..lol

I think there are many examples of mediocre to good players being great in the right system but great players in a jacked up system end up being just mediocre to good so I just hope and pray we get the right systems installed so we can be successful w/o great players but if they come along then all the better.
