As I was reading the paper this morning, a sigh of relief came over me when I found out the Pasqualoni has been fired. (sorry Paul, but I hear Century Village needs a coordinator)
The Dolphins have more talent on the defensive side of the ball than most teams in the NFL (bias aside) yet I believe we were the 22nd ranked defense in the league. Many people believe that football is a game played and won by the athletes on the field, but the truth is that some of those professional athletes don't have football smarts, especially on the defensive side. A good coordinator knows his talents and how best to use them and in my opinion, that was lost this season.
With the departure of Pasqualoni, there has been talk about potential candidates and finally some whispers of a new scheme.
Don't get me wrong, I do love a good 3-4 defense, but that defense is based on the idea of having athletic linebackers who can drop back in coverage, which Miami has no coverage LB. Argue all you want, but Taylor, Porter, Wake and Crowder are not the guys you want covering anything 15-20 yards past the line of scrimmage. These guys are pass rushers and should be used accordingly.
Whoever is hired as our new DC (I really like Zimmer from Cincinnati) I can only hope that he realizes that his players are better suited for a 4-3 defense. Don't forget that Miami did run a 4-3 many seasons ago when we were a top tier defense. We can only hope that we get signifanctly stronger on defense in the offseason (ie., signing Vince Wilfork and drafting Rolando McClain). Let us combine athletisism with football genius and rise to the top baby!
