My Dolphin Wish List: Everyone else was already doing it, so why not?
I haven't posted on The Phinsider in quite some time, but have continued to read the Matty and Co. content religiously.
Who doesn't love speculation, particularly in the NFL? Here's a quick glimpse of my personal wants and needs for the Dolphins going forward into the 2009 season and beyond. I hope you enjoy the read and feel compelled to offer your own insight!
- A definitive answer on Chad Henne.
Quite simply, is he, or isn't he the one? As has been previously pointed out, Chad now has 13 games with which to prove himself capable of leading this team. If the front office can go into the 2010 offseason knowing whether or not they have to start from square one at the quarterback position, the team will be that much better off—waffling will only serve to set things back.
- A resigned Ronnie Brown.
Number 23 is, without a doubt, the most talented player on the Miami roster. He has, in the opinion of many a Dolphin fan, MVP-caliber abilities. Any hope of a respectable win-loss record in 2009 is contingent on his personal success. More importantly, however, are Ronnie's long term plans. I know Matty is a big fan of locking down Ronnie for the long run, and so am I. I am, however, growing increasingly wary of Ronnie bolting for another team, perhaps one that is just a big-time running back away from going all the way. If the "Trifecta" are anything close to the front office masterminds that we've made them out to be, they will not let this nightmare scenario come to fruition.
- A legitimate #1 wide receiver.
This point grows more and more painfully obvious with each passing game. I've watched Roddy White, Reggie Wayne, and Vincent Jackson during this early season and wept silently to myself. These wideouts are quintessential game changers, something that our receiving corp is sorely lacking. I consider myself a staunch supporter of Ted Ginn, as he can and will provide this team with a meaningful presence one day, but it's certainly not as a #1 wide receiver.
- A playmaking free safety.
If it's not apparent to you already, the Miami Dolphins are currently employing two strong safeties in their defensive backfield. Antonio Gates and Dallas Clark had field days with this roster blunder. I appreciate Yeremiah Bell and his ability to bounce back from injury in years past, and at the time of the signing, I thought the addition of Gibril Wilson was a positive one. That was, of course, based on the notion that he could successfully transition back to his free safety form from New York. Now, I feel as if the situation at safety necessitates a trade, particularly if the team is to eventually employ an Ed Reed-type player. Which one to part ways with would be subject to much conjecture, but my vote would be to keep the younger Wilson.
- A tight end who can break defensive coordinator's game plans.
By all accounts, Anthony Fasano had a very successful 2008 campaign. No one can argue with seven touchdown's worth of production out of the tight end position. But 2009 has, thus far, been a horse of a different color for our Italian Stallion. As has been allured to on the site, this is in all likelihood due to opposing coordinators' renewed efforts to game plan against our tight end. This, however, is not the case with a number of teams around the league. Jason Witten rarely gets shut down by a defensive scheme. Tony Gonzalez, Dallas Clark, and Antonio Gates make defenders adjust their game plans, rather than the other way around.
- A black hole at defensive tackle.
The centerpiece of a properly run 3-4 defense is a massive, gravity well of a nose tackle. Since coming over in a trade during the mass exodus from Dallas, Jason Ferguson has, for better or worse, filled this role admirably. But Ferguson is an elder statesmen in NFL terms, and probably on his last legs as a Miami Dolphin. Now, if I'm aware of and concerned with this pressing need, I'm positive that the front office tosses and turns at night over it. More than likely this need will be addressed in the 2010 draft, especially if a certain Oklahoma Sooner is available.
This is probably (definitely) wishful thinking on my part, but I would love to coax, arguably, the most dominating pass-rushing outside linebacker in the NFL out of Dallas and into South Florida. Certainly, Mr. Parcells can pull some strings for us? This is, of course, contingent on Ware's refusal to resign with the Cowboys, and I haven't the slightest clue how likely that is. It's just nice to picture big number 94 lining up to pressure Tom Brady into an errant pass or strip sack, isn't it?

solid job at making your points…and asking questions without being pushy and annoying.
Reality is….everyone wants a Ed Reed type. I just dont see any diffrence makers out there…i think another draft will fill some of the holes nicely…but that requires patience…not something us fans are friends with.
nice write-up.

Sigh.
If only finding these players was as easy as writing about it….

Eric Berry
is being touted as the next Ed Reed. While Ii don’t think he’ll be THAT good (Reed is the best safety ever), if he is 1/2 of Ed Reed, he’ll be a MONSTER. I think it’s about time we jump up in a round and get a game changer

Nice write up!
We definately need to find out if Henne is the man and if not then go find him.
We MUST resign Ronnie. On this I hope we all agree.
We have got to find that #1 wide out. I still wish we had found a way to trade for Bolden.
I can not imagine that Jerry Jones lets Ware out of Dallas. I would love to have him but not going to happen.
no we dont need to resign ronnie
in fact it would be stupid to do so.. why pay a rb big money when great rb’s can be had late inthe draft every year
I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

The draft is deep in pretty much everything we need
unless of course, we need a QB.. but hopefully Henne is the guy, and we can begin to surround him with studs.
WR – Dez Bryant, Damian Williams, Aurrelious Benn, there’s plenty of legit number 1-looking WR’s in this year’s class, not to mention Braylon Edwards and Vincent Jackson are both upcoming FA’s.
FS – Eric Berry is the draft day prize IMO, he’s a stud, and I’d absolutely love to get aggressive on draft day and go get him.
TE – Jermane Gresham is out with an injury right now, but he may have been the first TE taken if he came out LAST year. Guy is legit.
NT – Not a big fan of Terrence Cody, but I do like the funny named guy from Duke, Oghobaase. We should be able to get a quality NT in the 2nd-3rd round of next year’s draft, and if Soliai is any good, we can platoon him and the rook.
I’d add a KR/PR guy to the list as well. One guy has me excited for FA next year, and I think we need to do damn near whatever it takes to get him: Leon Washington. He scares the shit outta me every time he has the ball, I’d like the other team to feel that way for once.

Imagine if...
… they had guys who dressed up in Mel Kiper Jr. wigs in malls and you could go sit on their lap to ask for players.

Mel Kiper has that draft chat every Wedneday during the offseason on espn.com
I actually got two of my questions posted last offseason, and honestly, I think he’s the biggest dumbass at espn (which is saying quite a lot). He had us drafting Darrius Heyward-Bey for most of the offseason, which would have made NO sense because DHB is just a mutant version of Ted Ginn Jr. (with about the same quality of hands).

The funny think about the draft is its so unpredictable that any of us can
GUESS as well as MK and besides he looks like a giant douche.
by texascowpunk on Sep 30, 2009 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions
I just dislike MK because his opinions are bloated, arrogant and usually WRONG
According to him, we had no business passing over Matt Ryan. Never mind the fact that Jake Long went to the pro bowl and had his first season rated as an A by several scouts. Never mind the fact that the three most productive players out of that draft have been Jake Long, Matt Ryan and Jerod Mayo. Noooo, Mel’s never wrong. We should have picked Matt Ryan. Who’s blocking for him? Who cares! Matt Ryan blocks for himself! Who’s catching Matt Ryan’s passes? Who cares!!! He catches his own passes.
This one is my favorite though: MK basically ripped Jay Cutler all spring and reiterated time and time again that he thought Jay Cutler was overrated coming out of Vanderbilt, and that Jay’s supporters had egg on their faces because he hadn’t reached the playoffs. Are you really serious?
Yeah, ok, because Vince Young and Matt Leinart have just been killing it for the last few seasons. Jay Cutler is a bastard, no doubt, but there’s also no doubt that the dude can ball. Anyone who sides with Mel Kiper Jr. should go ask the Rams if they regret trading the pick to Denver that eventually landed Cutler.
As far as I am concerned, the people here are more knowledgeable than MK. We should be getting paid for this!
President of the Vontae Davis #21 fan club!
I cant stand arrogance either!
As far at getting paid for my football opinions where do I sign up. That sounds like the greatest job ever!
by texascowpunk on Sep 30, 2009 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions
you need to relax a little bit
the only reason Kiper looks like a douche and we don’t, is because his opinions are National news and posted everywhere you look, and ours don’t make a lick of difference to anyone on the planet but us.
And, looking back now, we had no business passing on Matt Ryan. Kiper was right about that pick. At the time, I believe Jake was the right pick because he was more of a sure thing IMO than Ryan. After seeing how Ryan has adapted to the NFL game, and essentially become a Franchise Guy by year 2, we would’ve had the most important position in the game, and the position that’s haunted us for a decade, filled for the foreseeable future.

No, having nothing to do with what he does for a living,
he just LOOKS like a douche! Arrogance makes me crazy as well and he is most certianly arrogant.
That being said, I know a lot of what comes out of him is hot air but we all still listen to him when he talks because in general he knows more than we do.
I also agree if the FO had a crystal ball they take Ryan over Long as a no brainer. A franchise QB is the hardest thing to find in the NFL. Thats why with 32 teams there are maybe half that or less that you can say are true longterm franchise guys.
by texascowpunk on Sep 30, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
lol yeah he does come off as a pompous ass
but I was responding to kmb saying most of his opinions are wrong. Alot of times, Kiper looks like a moron on draft day because his mock is screwed up. In later years, he’s usually proven right on a lot of picks, and many NFL GM’s look like jackasses for missing on picks.

picking lotto numbers. If it were that easy no one would ever pick a bust in the top 3 rounds and we would all be rich.

I love the fact that there's someone else besides me who is interested in scoring either
Dez Bryant or Arrelious Benn in next year’s draft. I think either one of those guys would be a big-time difference maker in the Dolphin offense. I am more partial to Bryant (who is a #1 threat all the way), but Benn’s piqued my interest, too. I think the learning curve would be much shorter for Bryant, too (though Benn could surprise).
Now, I’d like to think we won’t be picking in the top 10, but if we are, I agree we consider making a play for Eric Berry. I don’t look at many draft prospects as a sure-fire, but that guy is just going to be a sick pro for years and years. You can tell he just “gets it.” A secondary boasting Vontae Davis, Sean Smith and Eric Berry would basically challenge the Klingons for interstellar domination.
Jermaine Gresham is a home-run waiting to happen at TE, but I’d only be cool with taking him in the first round if we trade down within the round a few times and score another second round or third round pick. I have to admit I hadn’t even considered the possibility of us getting him. Hmmm.
Arthur Jones and Vince Ohgobaase are my fave DT prospects. I am already impressed with our run defense this year, which means we could be devastating against the run with a power NT.
Awesome post, Little Nicky. I always enjoy reading your stuff.
President of the Vontae Davis #21 fan club!

yeah I think this is the year we round out the roster with playmakers through the draft. A bigtime WR/TE, a gamechanging ILB, and then fill in the gaps from there.

A good wide reciever that can drag two defenders with him every time
will help this offense more than anything. Think of the running lanes that Ronnie will have when the saftie can not cheat up on every play.

I would love to get ware, but....
The linebacking class is loaded this year at that position, and anybody would be good. I would like to add Ware, or if not him, Thomas Howard, Shawne Merriman, or Kirk Morrison.
One thing is for sure, we need to start adding young superstars to the team that make us dynamic!!!

Ronnie will still be a fin in 2010
Brown’s contract calls for him to stay a Dolphin next season if there is no collective bargaining agreement. The two sides seem no where near that, since they are not even talking.
God is Great,
Beer is good
and people are crazy.
Phyrmun
Ronnie Brown is way too good for us to even consider letting him go
And you don’t just replace a guy like #23. His combination of power and speed is unbelievable. I would be so frickin’ pissed if we let him go.
If Henne picks up the offense and really proves to be our franchise guy, and we re-sign Brown and allow the offensive line to fully gel as a unit, we’re a #1 wideout from being a super bowl-quality offense. I truly believe that.
President of the Vontae Davis #21 fan club!
It all depends on how Henne pans out
If he does:
our needs are S, WR, LB and NT
if he doesnt:
Our needs are: QB, S, WR, and LB.
