What is success for Chad Henne?
As we all know by now it looks as if though Chad Henne will be our starter for the remainder of the season. Already, after a quarter and a half some have labeled him as “the suck”. I was wondering what would be considered a good season for him? What would warrant him a full offseason as the starter? I thought that another year holding a clipboard for him would have done him a lot of good. I don’t think the team is built well enough for a young, inexperienced quarterback. Our receivers are not what you would call elite. And where as other teams have a tight end to dump off to in a bad situation. this year our TE have been so non existent that people haven’t even realized it yet. It like we don’t have any. So with that in mind what do you think is a good season for him?

More TD's than INT's
60% completions. I don’t really care about yards, but a 7 or 8 yds / attempt average would work for me. I think those are starting points to a successful season.

pretty loft expectation
peyton manning: 56% completion and 2 more int than TDs his first year along with 6.5 yds/attempt
good thing u werent coachin the colts back then

He was also a rookie
Henne has had one year in the system so he should be ready to handle the entire playbook. He should know the checks, the audibles etc. Sitting has advantages and this is one of them.
Plus the bar has risen with the likes of Flacco, Ryan, Stafford, and Sanchez. I would expect the same type of production from Henne.

without the full off season as the starter u would expect the same production?
and stafford has 2 touchdowns and 5 interceptions with a qb rating of 57
and all the qbs u named were drafted higher than henne

Flacco and Ryan didn't have a full off season to prepare for the '08 season
Flacco completed 60% of his passes for 6.94 yds / attempt with 14 td’s and 12 ints’s.
Ryan completed 61.1% of his passes for 7.92 yds / attenpt with 16 td’s amd 11 int’s.
If you don’t like those comparisons, how about Matt Cassel? He got no off season work and came in cold. Started 15 games (Henne could have 13 games started). Cassel completed 63.4% of his passes for 7.16 yds / attempt with 21 td’s and 11 int’s.
I don’t think it would be too much to ask for Henne to put up similar numbers.

Baltimore's aren't that great and Pennington complete 67% of his passes last year to the Phins WR's

ok...
you just go on ahead and base your standards of a good season for henne by using the stats of the nfl’s leading completion percentage quarterback. real smart…

That was a response about the quality of WR's on the Phins
I don’t expect Henne to get to 67% completions. But obviously someone had to catch the ball for Pennington last year, so the phins WR’s are capable of at least catching the ball. That was my only point in that comment.

Penne is a very reciever friendly QB
do you think Henne will take the initiative that penne took and work with the recievers after practice? Will he be that leader and make sure they are on the same page? i dont know. not to mention Penne throws these guys marshmellows. Henne is gonna throw them laser beams covered in hot mustard.

All the reasons that you list above are what the Phins need to find out about him.
Will he work with the WR’s after practice to become better? Will he put in the extra time studying game film? Will have work on throwing the ball in positions to help his WR? All of those things need to be done to be successful. That’s what the coaching staff needs to see in Henne to be the future leader of the team. If he can’t do those things, then you move on to the next guy.

by off season i meant training camp- I apologize =D
Flacco and Ryan were first round picks for a reason… they showed that they could contribute right away.
For Ryan: do we have roddy white? do we have the nfl’s leading rusher? do we have the coach of the year?
For Flacco: do we have arguable the best defense in the nfl?
For Cassel: do we have welker and moss? do we have a team that people were calling the best in the history of the nfl before the superbowl loss? do we have bill bellicheat, who despite what everyone says i have tremondous respect for as a coach. and ya hows cassel doing this year where the team is a little closer to earth than the pats were?
so ya combination of lack of preparation with training camp, draft position, and with the talent, ( or lack there of) surrounding him, along with the fact that brian brohm who was drafted a pick ahead of him was a complete bust. all those IMO show that the success of those other qbs is incomprable
(apologize for the run on sentences and just complete lack of writing skills on my part)

I don't care about wins or losses
That is irrelevant right now. The rest of this season is about production and making plays as a QB. Henne should benefit from a solid running game (currently ranked 3rd in the league). He should also benefit from some solid protection (Flacco was sacked 37 times last year. Cassel 47.)
IMO, there will be no one to blame about a lack of production other than himself. This coaching staff can’t put a young QB in a much better position to succeed.

im not talking about wins or losses either
i know its poorly written but plz reread it.
This coaching staff can’t put a young QB in a much better position to succeed.
did u not read anything i wrote? no training camp with starters, no receiving threats, inconsistent o-line, defense always has us playing from behind so he cant utilize the 3rd ranked running game to his advantage.
ONE OF THE WORST POSITIONS YOU CAN PUT A YOUNG QB IN.

What more can they give Henne to succeed?
A pro bowl running back? Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams.
A high priced OL? Every single starting OL has been picked by this coaching staff and paid a lot of money. Does that mean that Henne won’t take his lumps? Of course not. But they have done everything within their power to improve the unit. Long, Smiley, Grove, Thomas, Carey are a top 10 and maybe top 5 OL in the league.
A consistent pass catching TE? Fasano was pretty good last year. Don’t know what happened to him this year.
A go to WR? That is the only area that may be an issue. But I would contend that Bess is going to be that guy. Like a Hines Ward or Wes Welker. A guy who runs intermediate routes and always finds a way to get open.
So other than a big play threat on the outside (suppose to be Ted Ginn in his 3rd year breakout season, yeah right), what more can this FO and coaching staff provide?
by ct1361 on Sep 28, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
do i seriously need to restate everything i say?
your first point: good running backs
first of all michael turner leading rusher, i know that probably means nothing to u but juz wanna throw that in there.
my main point is if our defense allows a touchdown everysingle drive within a minute, we will always be playing from behind, and when ur playing from behind the running game means zero, nada, nothing!
second point: OL
highpriced o-line does not mean a good o-line, have u watched any of the games? did u see why penny got hurt? another thing penny has thrown more int than TDs… so u expect henne to do better than that?
third point: TE
fasono has been invisible, was invisible last year for about 40-50% of the games, thats were david martin showed up but we dont have him this year.
fourth point: go to wr
do i really need to argue? even u admit that thats an issue, and welker success is partly due to a HOF qb in tom brady and a HOF wr randy moss deep threat which opens up the middle where welker thrives
so ya anything else?

I guess you have to restate everything. I'm slow.
So to end this nonsense, I will agree with everything you say.
Michael Turner, Running Back God! I bet everyone in Atlanta knew that he was going to be the rushing leader last year. Those extra 124 rushing yards that he gained more than Ronnie and Ricky made all the difference. But if you add in receiving yards Ricky and Ronnie totaled 308 more yards. Nope Michael Turner is the greatest.
As far as the OL, I have watched every snap of every game. What I see is an OL that is allowing the running backs a 4.7 yds / carry clip. They suck! The only QB in the league to be hit this year is Chad Pennington. Every other OL in the league keeps their QB completely clean on every passing play! So I guess pass protection sucks too. You got me on that one.
The TE’s and WR’s suck for the phins. Suck so much that Pennington was able to complete 67% of his passes and finish 2nd in MVP voting. It’s amazing that he was able to complete that many passes because I guess no one on the phins is capable of catching them.
So I agree with you completely. Thanks for educating me on what to look for in football. Don’t know how I survived without this education. Thanks.

wow sarcasm to the extreme?! if u didnt wanna have an intelligent debate than u shouldnt have replied
you say: “to end this” and u start talkin all this bull shit and sarcasm.
i never said michael turner was a running back god but u made him seem like it ur description, he as one person exceeded two “great” running backs according to u. hes like two great runningbacks in one! that pretty amazing. thanks for proving my point even more.
the o-line: good running blocking has zero to do with pass blocking, they are two completely different things.
and i never said the TE and WR suck. im just saying that what the other qbs that u were comparing to had better. again cp10’s entire game is based on completions since his passes barely ever exceed 10 yds. chad henne is different, hes not a game manager- hes a playmaker with an arm so hes gonna throw deep, and as any football fan knows: u throw less completions when u throw deep. its a risk/reward thing.
u have completely drifted off the subject which was ur comparisons of henne success to that of ryan, flacco, stafford, cassel, etc.
i dont see why u got ur panties in a bunch i was just pointing some stuff out. sorry if i hurt ur feelings.

Sorry for the sarcasm
But I am still waiting for what you want for Henne? There is no perfect situation to place him in. Is Stafford in a better position than Henne from an OL, RB, WR, TE stand point? Maybe at WR, but that is it. The fact of the matter is all QB’s get hit at least a half dozen times every game. Every single one. There is no perfect pass protection, no ideal running game to place a QB into.
So I will ask again, when will we know when the team is ready for Henne? What needs to be in place prior to Henne being in the best possible position to succeed? And how long will that take?

Why are they ridiculous?
They are based on what rookie or 1st year starting QB’s have done last year and this year. Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez and probably Stafford are performing at those levels. Why can’t Henne? Why should we expect anything less? Henne could post those numbers and not be even close to what Pennington did with the same supporting cast last year.

Why stop there?
Why not give him Marino expectations, and of course by your standards Brees would already be gone from the league, along with both Mannings and an entire host of pro bowl and HOF QBs, that is what I’m talking about.

and a training camp with 1st team
those should be a minimum before you put a young qb in there.
the conditions are not close to perfect is all i was trying to say, im not saying we sign someone else to run the team right now, im just saying that its not ALL on henne if he doesnt do as good as ryan, flacco, cassel.

i think a successful season for henne
will include how well the offense can conform to what he is. If dan henning is going to try to run it like pennington is still under center, henne is doomed. If they can PTR, then stretch the field more than twice a game, henne will have a higher chance for success. Dink and Dunk is Done for Dolphins. DDDD. Dan Henning better pull his head out of his ancient ass and realize that.

Success for Henne should be
if he’s an upgrade to CP10.
If he’s not then whats the point?
Can he manage the offense better than CP10? Can he throw better than CP10?

yrds per completion
The Top 5 Quarterbacks of all time have an avg. of 6 to 7 yrds per catch…I’d be happy that Chad (H) just be able to hit the seams 50% and outs 75% of the time. He also can throw downfield…about time to take advantage of the 4.3 Ginn Speed

SUCCESS FOR HENNE
FORMULA: 20 TO 40 YRD LINE : RUN IT; 40 TO 35 YRD LINE : WILDCAT IT; 35 TO GOAL LINE SLING IT, YEAH! THATS WRIGHT SLING IT BETWEEN THE NUMBERS. NO LOBBING IT, AIRING IT, OR SOFT-TOUCHING IT, JUST SLING IT FOR A SCORE.
THIS WILL WIN 12 GAMES IN 2009.
HENNE MUST AVOID THE 3 YRD SIDE PASSES. THOSE WILL BE THE NAILS OF HIS COFFIN.
HENNE IS THE ROCKET-ARM WE WERE WAITING FOR, OUR DOLPHIN OFFENSIVE TRUCK CAN NOT GO ON FIRST GEAR ALL THE TIME. NOW IS THE TIME FOR SHIFTING IN BETWEEN FIRST GEAR, DRIVE LONG, BACK TO FIRST GEAR, AND FINALLY SLING IT FOR A SCORE. NOW IS THE TIME, LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!

12 OR MORE
Not Henne alone. I am talking everybody: on Offense: Brown, Williams, Polite, Guinn Camarillo, Long, and the other officers.; On Defense: Taylor, Merlin, Porter, Crowder and the rest of of our family. Thats wright, family, I believe out team has lost these three first game by a miscalibration of the forces within the team. We need a team tune-up. I like the sound of it . It’s smashing!!!

Now that is reasonable, good call dude!
Of course it would be nice if he exceeded beyond that, but your absolutely right, he does get a chance to learn.

good season for henne in my eyes would be to make a couple big plays with his arm every game… and win at least 6 games.
if he does that, then he deserves a shot at a full year.
by Davone_Is_BessT on Sep 28, 2009 5:02 PM EDT
okay so if OFF4L says it than its a good call, if i say it i get ignored. i see how it is. i gotcha finster.

Good season for Henne
I’m not gonna base it on stats or wins, because that depends on other people. Henne, IMO, needs to become the leader of the team. Don’t make killer mistakes. Bring the big play back to Miami, even if it’s just 1 or 2 deep throws a game. Show competence as a QB. Give all of us reason for hope next season. If he looks like he’s on his way to being a good QB, I’m happy. If he looks like John Beck, we better start packaging picks to get Bradford.

I just want to see them stretch the field. Ginn can def torch a guy after about 20-30 yds, so start tossing some 60 yd bombs
"check that...the 29th of Feb. this year.....why is that the record day for hits? Did Matty have the Kim Kardashian sex tape or something?"

It only works if he can actually catch the pass.
If he starts making most of his catches like hes paid to do then we might have something.

Are you kidding me
Look I hope the miami coaching staff reads this. If your not going top play pat white then trade his ass and start to get pics ready for sam bradford oh which by the way Pat white tore up 48-28 in the bowl game. I also guess the throws he made in the game was a impostor so sue me So pat white find a new team.

I guess my expectations for Henne are much lower than some here
but it really has nothing to do with my lack of confidence in his ability.I think the thing that CP did more than anything was to really transform the locker room into a “family” type atmosphere instead of just a bunch of X’s and O’s and that had a lot to do with our success last year IMO and I think that is one of the many things he was trying to teach Henne.
I could go on and on about my feelings for CP,how honored I am as a Miami Dolphin fan to have had him on the team I have loved since a child etc. but I think Sparano said it all when he called him “Sunshine” and I will leave it at that.
Success for Henne in my eyes would be to first gain the confidence of the coaches and players but he has already done that because they go way beyond the normal blah blah blah when talking about his poise and leadership so now it’s all about the game slowing down for him, maintaining the proper footwork, mechanics and timing they’ve been teaching him and chemistry with the OL,RB’s,WR’s and TE’s and that will take time, time from the OL and time as in experience through repetition.
He has been taught “game management” from the best at it in the history of the NFL so he is way ahead of the game IMO,he has an OC that relies heavily on the short passing game and that will only help Hennes confidence as he should complete a lot of his passes and he has great RB’s behind him,all of that combined takes a lot of pressure off of him and allow him to play within himself and that is crucial in his development.
Numbers mean nothing to me for Henne..I will simply be looking for progressing!

Thank you! Thats exactly how EVERY Dolphin fan should approach this.
As long as we continue to see improvement as time goes by we should all be happy. I for one am going to pull for him because bottom line is he is not the starting QB.
