Dolphins vs Chargers: Prediction Time

As usual, it's time for some picks.  First we have some "expert picks" which are followed by my pick and my week 3 locks (though my week 2 locks were anything but locks).  Then, finally, be sure to give us your predictions below.

Chris Mortensen - SD Adam Schefter - SD Ron Jaworski - SD
Tom Jackson - Mia Pete Prisco - SD Harmon Forecast - SD
PFT - Mia Peter King - SD Jason Cole - SD
Steve Wyche - SD Clark Judge - Mia Mark Schlereth - SD

I didn't think the Dolphins would get much love this week coming off of a tough loss, on a short week, heading out to the west coast to play a talented Chargers team.  And you know what - I see where these guys are coming from.

That's why I'm going to take the Chargers to win as well.  I just think that the Dolphins will have a hard time recovering from Monday night's crushing loss.  And I don't see a much better performance from Miami's defense this week against Phillip Rivers, Antonio Gates, and company.

The Dolphins will be able to run the ball, but I think they'll struggle to get key stops defensively and that will lead to a Chargers win, 27-23.

My Week 3 Locks
Texans -3.5 over Jaguars
- Houston's offense finally got going last week while the Jaguars continue to struggle.  This should be a double-digit win for the Texans.
Titans +2.5 over Jets - I just don't see the Titans falling to 0-3 to start the year.  They'll stop NY's run and force Mark Sanchez to beat them...and he won't.
Bears -1.5 over Seahawks - Playing in Seattle is never easy.  But the Seahawks will likely be without their QB and I expect Matt Forte to finally get going on the ground.

Last Week: 1-2
Season: 1-2

I quit betting altogether years ago

because I felt that betting against Miami equated to not being a true fan and if I bet at all I had to bet on Miami so I just quit…not complaining just sayin’ :)

Thats a funny story to me.

The one and only time I ever placed a bet was years ago. I of course bet on Miami over SD on a Monday night. I was soooo sure and I so lost. That was all it took for me.

by texascowpunk on Sep 26, 2009 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

We got this one.

Against anyone but Manning (the true genius of the NFL, imo) we would have demoralized and thrashed the opposition on Monday night. If we can play like that again, we’ll eke this one out.

SD have some scary players, but they are inconsistent and have poor coaching. The defence will play angry and step up a bit more, and I reckon we squeak this one out. Either way it should be within three points.

Football isn't a matter of life and death - it's far more important than that.

by Agumen on Sep 26, 2009 2:10 AM EDT reply actions

I think we will be able to run on them just like last week.

We just need the defense to step up and make some plays and it will be in the bag.

by texascowpunk on Sep 26, 2009 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions

it's not as easy as it sounds

we should be able to run the ball, but the defense needs to get it together. We’re not going to win if they keep letting up over 20 points in 15 minutes

But they better show up on defense, or it will be SD big. Short week, west coast, after a disheartening loss—-gonna be tough.

My Picks.....

I think Gates will have 8 receptions for over 100 yards and a TD
I think Sproles will have about 80 yards receiving, and 50 yards rushing.

I think we’re going to have another rough day in the secondary, and they have too many athletic fast guys on offense for us to effectively cover.

I predict a 24-14 San Diego win.

I think we’ll run the ball effectively, but not nearly as well as we did Monday Night. I think Ginn is going to have an average night at best. He’ll get 8-9 balls thrown to him, and catch about 4 for 40 yards. I think Bess is going to have a decent night, and I think this if the first game that we’ll see Pat White scamper and/or throw a pass out of the WC.

I agree with Matty on everyone of his locks…..

by Fr8Train on Sep 26, 2009 8:14 AM EDT reply actions

Despite my prediction

I think this is a winnable game for us. I just don’t think we’ll put it all together just yet.
I think we’re going to give up too many big plays on defense, and not come up with enough big plays on offense.

Right now, that is the biggest difference I see between the Dolphins and the other Good teams in the league. We don’t make the big plays on offense. Sure, we get good plays out of the Wildcat, but thats generally a 10 scamper or something…. Our WR’s aren’t breaking tackles and adding an extra 10-20 yards after the catch, and our defense gives up too many of those big plays for us to compete.

by Fr8Train on Sep 26, 2009 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Stats

Chargers are number one in pass offense 661yds. We rank 27th in pass defense.

They are 8th in the NFL in scoring. We are 27th.

We will run the ball and they will throw it, just like Indy and we saw what happened there.

Until we have a vertical passing game and improved secondary play, I don’t see us beating teams like this.

Unless of course we get a positive turnover ratio. Having more opportunites to score and converting them to 7 (not 3) will be our best shot at pulling off the upset.

Go after the ball boys and give us loyal fans a win!

As much as I love my Dolphins, I kinda picked San Diego to win the Super Bowl.

This is a tough one to call. On one hand you have a team that played good on defense, but terrible on offense versus Atlanta while playing great on offense, but terrible on defense versus the Colts. If they can just put it all together and play solid on both sides of the ball, they’ll have a chance to win in San Diego. On the other hand, you have my pick to win the Super Bowl here in Miami, the Chargers. They have just too much talent! It’s unfair. Rivers is a top 5 QB. Tomlinson might be a top 3 RB…. Of all time! Gates is the best TE in the league not named Tony Gonzalez (and has been for quite a while). Sproles is the best change of pace dual threat back in all of football. I can go on and on.

I just think that the Fins have to be absolutely perfect on both sides of the ball to win this thing. That’s tough to ask from a team that has shown no signs of consistency. I think it will be a closer game than people think. But….. :(

Dolphins Win Tommorrow

We always beat the Chargers. No reason to stop now. Last time we lost against them was 1995, when Don Shula was coaching the team.

They’re battling significant injuries and we should be able to run against them. I’m also trusting that the Dolphins taken care of some of their problems relating to fundamentals, like blocking and tackling.

For the Phins to have any shot in this game, the defense needs to create turnovers!

I haven’t like the phins is this game since the schedule was released. Too much is going against the phins in this spot: on the road, short week, pacific time zone, talented team at home after a loss, etc.

If the phins want to win this game, they need to have a massive turnover edge. I am thinking that they need at least 3 TO’s on defense, maybe 4. But they have yet to create a turnover in 2 weeks (Miami is minus 5 in TO margin this year). If the defense gives the offense short fields and the offense converts those TO’s into TD’s, not FG’s, the phins can win this game.

But I don’t see it. I think it will be SD in a blow out 34-13.
