I wouldn’t expect a lot more info. The Colts are pretty secretive. Just follow the practice reports and the gameday inactives once it’s into the week 3 to 9 range.

New* info coming out on Gonzo
sounds like it might be closer to 6 weeks or maybe even longer.
*=well more like the Colts suggesting the old info isn’t reliable and acting like Gonzo will be serious time (working out a bunch of veteran WRs).

Philly not Indy
but seriously the shooting incident was just a total disaster on ESPN’s part. Charges were never filed against Marvin because of conflicting reports of whether he was the one shooting, and because they couldn’t prove his gun was used in a crime because shell casings were found in the “victim’s” car, allowing whoever was behind Marvin’s gun to claim (or actually have been acting in) self defense.
His accuser was an ex-con who plead to making false statements in the case.
I know you were kidding but the case pisses me off, because of how ESPN handled it.

since i didn’t follow it too closely – other then marv being and su grad…
but there was the initial shooting, then the one in july which wasn’t with marv’s gun (and maybe not by him) and i though he had made a statement that just recently that if he was killed it was because marv was out to get him…
but obviously i’m not up on the details.

used to shoot a guy who had issues with marv last year…
the guy survived.
he was shot again a couple of months ago and survived (for a while)…
i thought he had just been shot again and died, but the old gray mare lover … used actual facts or at least put up enough of a barrier to prevent me from going any further since i really don’t care too much about it… says he just died from the 2nd shooting, but anyways just recently the guy said marv is trying to kill him….
btw: there might have been a lawsuit or two between and maybe before the shootings.

yeah Dixon was suing in civil court
for both Marvin Harrison shooting him and at the same time Marvin being negligent in allowing someone to use his gone in shooting Dixon.
I doubt anything would have come from it. They found shell casings in Dixon’s truck and all the witness give conflicting (sometimes with themselves) stories.

Ok, kind of a 3 part question
With Gonzalez hurt, has anyone stepped up to take his place and help out Wayne and Clark as recieving threats?
How effective do you think Addai and the running game will be? Our run defense has looked pretty solid so far. (limited Turner to 65 yards on 22 carries)
And finally, how has the defense looked with Bob Sanders out? I noticed last year they had some struggles when he was injured, are you seeing some of that again this year? Also, how long is he supposed to be out, I want to know for my fantasy team.

Pierre Garcon will probably take the starts (see above)
but there’ll probably be some more time from rookie slot man Austin Collie (a Stokley-Welker type), Jacob Tamme (a Clark clone) and maybe some splitback formations with both Addai and Brown.
I don’t expect much from the run game. Last week the backs picked up short yardage well, blocked and caught very well, but didn’t rack up much actual yardage on the ground. I’d expect repeats of that until the OL starts to gel.
The D looked good Sunday. They don’t have Sanders, but his backup Melvin Bullitt is a very good safety. I think he’s actually more of a dropoff in pass D than in run D from Sanders. Though run D is less needed from the safeties now that they have 4 300lbers to play DT, instead of starting 265 and 254 pound DTs for most of last year.
Sanders was taken off the PUP before the start of the season so they expect to have him before week 6 (when he’d be able to come back if the PUP’ed him). They refuse to discuss a timetable, but Polian said on NFL Network last week that Sanders’ knee has been cleared by his doctor, Bob just has to pass conditioning tests and get some practice time in before they’ll play him. Basically he has to live in the weight room until he builds back up enough strength in his legs to be effective.

The Colts STs are been awful recently, but they've got a new ST coach and a new punter
the Punter looks awesome already. Killed it in preseason and had both his punts downed inside the Jags 10 Sunday.
the coverage teams didn’t stand out either way and were actually good last year. It’s the returners that were terrible last year. They have their returner from 07 back (blown ACL in 08 preseason) who is a very good punt returner, but doesn’t do kickoffs well.
The Dolphins seem to have the kind of O that will have a really predictable result against the Colts D. They do the short stuff that the Colts give up well and with Pennington they won’t be taking random deep shots (which usually go poorly against a team that almost always was both safeties sitting over the top and has Freeney and Mathis coming off the edge). They’ll put up some points, not a ton, but either some or a solid amount (depending on the red zone success). So the way I see it that leaves how the game will go up to the offense. Which is what I like.
The early line is Colts -3.5 I’d take the Colts, but wouldn’t feel good about it (and if I wasn’t a Colts fan might take Colts straight up but Phins to cover).

IMO, this game will come down to the safeties....
It’s no surprise that Bell and Wilson are stud bangers but not the best deep cover guys. They are protected but solid CB play and an outstanding rush. If we can’t get the rush going, Manning will be looking at those seems all day.
When I look at your Safeties, minus Sanders, I’m not impressed and consider this your weak link. Our best passing offense involves mis-matches on safeties and our best run offense appears to be when we can overcome the safeties playing in the box.
I’m curious to know how you safeties fare Bullit and Bethea. Bethea appears to be a better cover FS than anything, but is Bullit a liability right now?
Thanks!

Bullitt came out of nowhere last year
and was pretty awesome filling in for Sanders. He doesn’t put the highlight hits on guys like Bob, but he’s very good in run support. I don’t think he’s quite as good as Sanders is pass coverage, but that’s a really underrated part of Bob’s game so it’s not a massive knock. The Colts D is built around not allowing the big play and Bullitt/Bethea fit that well as good cover guys who are sound tacklers. Neither are the big playmakers like Sanders, but they do their job without having to be covered for.
Bethea actually has a pro bowl under his belt. He was a 6th round pick and beat out a returning starter (who was a second round pick) in camp/preseason of his rookie year. He’s a excellent centerfielder and is good in run support. His clear flaw is his awful awful hands (now worse because he’s playing with one hand casted). Bethea will cover deep, he’ll knock down a lot of passes, but he’s probably not going to pick many off in his career.

My Miami Dolphins webpage is www.playoffboundsports.com Come on over and join the discussion.
I see screen pass written all over this game...
We’ve been caught a few times w/ pass rush heavy, corners turned to their receivers and running backs just waiting for the ball. You think this may be a big part of the game plan for the Colts?
If I'm a chicken, you're a turkey....
teams love screens and draws against Indy
because the DEs fly upfield and the LBs drop at the snap. The DBs tackle well and the front 7 has a lot of speed so that makes up for some of it, usually limiting it to short gains, but it’s an effective way to move the chains methodically against them.

as I understand it
1. the OC Tom Moore gives Peyton 3 plays
2. Peyton picks one based off what the D shows,
3. he either snaps the ball or goes through a fake snap in his cadence and adjusts based off anything the D tips on the fake
4. repeat step 3 as time allows

well they do have some false starts
the Colts old Pro Bowl LT Tarik Glenn was known for frequent false starts and Ryan Diem/Tony Ugoh have carried that torch for him at times since his retirement.
But adjusting to the cadence and getting use to holding their stance for a long time (which kills opposing DLs legs who aren’t use to so much time in their stance) is just part of the job for a Colts O lineman.

no, that's a foal
A Colt is more like a (male) teen horse than a baby horse.

I had to look up the specific terms
I knew Colts were young, but not babies. They’re the age/type that are run in horse races. Baltimore was a big horse racing center, which is how the Colts got their name (which was retained in the move to Indy)

To convinve you guys to bench that loser QB you have? I think you are so much better to play…well…do you even carry a backup QB anymore?

they're carrying two backups this year actually
Their punter had been a big time high school QB recruit who was converted to punter so he was the emergency 3rd QB. Now that he’s with the Redskins, replaced by a guy that’s doesn’t have QB experience they are carrying 3 QBs on the roster for the first time in years. Jim Sorgi is Mr. Clipboard and rookie Curtis Painter is the Apprentice Clipboard Holder.

Love the Matt Roth award
I’m a Hawkeyes fan and a current U of Iowa student, so I know all about Roth.
Best story I’ve heard was about him getting into a fight in practice with Iowa star LT at the time Robert Gallery. He grabbed Gallery by the facemask and ripped the mask off the helmet (while Gallery was wearing it).

his return was a big help
but as much as I love Bob (see avatar) there were 3 other big factors.
They finally benched a disaster of a new starting LB for a very solid veteran.
Anthony McFarland finally settled in and got the scheme down at DT after being acquired at the trade deadline
The coaches called more inside rushes for Freeney and Mathis instead of nearly all straight upfield stuff.

I live in Tampa
and heard the guys on 620 am talking about the Bucs and Derrick Brooks. It made sense what they said. They said that he probably could have stayed for the vet minimum or close to it, either with the Bucs or with another team. But for the players that have been doing it for over 10 years, all the hard work just isn’t worth it for only $800k or $900k. They have so much $$ anyway, that putting their bodies through that for another year requires more coin.

I think they'll get their yards
but I think the Colts finally have the bulk again to not get totally run over. Because of the scheme they run and the amount of resources they spend on the offense, they’ll never be a dominating run D, but they can be good enough that teams can’t totally grind out the clock and be guaranteed long drives just by pounding the ball.
I don’t think the WC will work well. They flat out handled the unbalanced line stuff the Ravens threw at them last year despite being severely undersized and I don’t think the misdirection will phase them too badly since the D stresses execution over variation and is made up of all returning players (maybe minus CB where the returning starter at CB might just play nickel with a rookie, who looked awesome last week, in his place while he’s still getting in game shape after a blown ACL last season).
It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

yea but IMO
we have more weapons than the Ravens do to run the wildcat…especially now with Pat White (which we prob won’t use just yet)

it wasn't their wildcat (I'm not sure if they ran any)
just the two tackles to a side power stuff that you’d think a small D would have issues with.

it will probably gain some yards from Dolphins winning a man on man battle or two on any given play
but I don’t think we’ll see big plays from blown assignments. The Colts D is built around not allowing big plays and the players have their emphasis on executing a couple different assignments perfectly, rather than being able to run everything plus the kitchen sink to confuse offenses.
It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

it's a pretty conservative D
they basically have 3 deep every play. Either the base Tampa-2 look that drops MLB Gary Brackett into the seem between the deep safeties, or for more run D they run a real cover 3. CBs get a “nothing behind you” on their 1/3rd, Bethea plays centerfield and Bob or Bullitt comes up in the box and/or plays the robber.
It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.
by shake n bake on Sep 17, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions
they are blitzing a little more with the new DC
so that means some man coverage, but if the Jags game was a good indication they still are going to be among the least blitzing teams (they blitzed ~10 snaps of 55)

with gonzo out...
who has the most potential to catch passes and get yards and score tds on the offense. He will be throwing to Wayne and Clarke but not who else? Is it collie?
Pierre Garcon will probably start on the outside
with Austin Collie playing the slot. They stopped playing Collie on the outside early in camp and just wanted him to learn the offense from the slot.
Down the road the just signed Hank Baskett might push Garcon for some time opposite Garcon, or take snaps outside in power situations.
It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.
by shake n bake on Sep 17, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions
just because...
Gargon is starting on the outside does that mean he has the potential to havea better game than Collie? Wes Welker plays the slot why can’t Peyton use Collie like Welker?
I'm not sure who will do better.
Garcon will probably see more snaps, but Collie will probably have better matchups for the snaps he gets.
Collie is definitely in the Stokley/Welker mold. That’s why they’ve been practicing him exclusively in the slot.

What player....
that maybe we might not be familiar with do you think will have a big impact in this game?
they probably won't make a big visable difference
but they’ll have a major impact. Ed and Antonio Johnson at DT. Two 300+ pounders (who can push the pocket a bit) in the middle. The Colts DL is bigger than it’s been in years, after they ran out the smallest DL the leagues seen, probably in decades (245/274, 254, 265, 268) last year.

but the OL isn’t run blocking that well. No long runs and a good number of runs that were totally doomed by the blocking.

ok i finally have formulated a question
Alot has been said about the game being played in miami. The dolphins are expected to play quite well because of the home field advantage, and primetime game slot. But lets not forget that Pmanning won his only super bowl in landshard stadium. So clearly primetime in miami is no biggie for Manning. How much do you think that will help the Colts in this game?
2009 is a year of respect ladies and gentlemen. Lets get it.

the research into homefield advantage that I've seen suggests that the advantages are more about familiarity
than travel or crown noise or fans pumping home players up. Homefield seems to start off strong and tails off as the game goes on and division games seem to have less of a home field advantage, which really makes it look like the effect is from players being outside of their comfort zone in the leadup to the game.
So I guess having played in Miami and at the stadium before is better than having not, but I’d bet if you dropped the Jacksonville Airport, Team Hotel and Stadium into Miami and played there the Colts would be even better off.

i look at the AFC South and i don’t see any particular “rivalries” that you see in most other divisions
in the AFC East the Dolphins have had big wins and heart brakes against the other three teams that make each game against them more than just a game against a team that you see twice a year
care to make an argument disputing my claim?
also, if memory serves correctly the Dolphins and Colts actually were pretty decent rivals in the late nineties when there were only three divisions, i miss those games
The Colts biggest rival is definitely outside their division (Patriots)
but there’s some young rivalries growing with the Jags and Titans. The AFC South is a very young division the teams don’t have a long history against each other which is why you don’t see the big “traditional” rivalry type games.

ok, that made enough sense before getting weird for an answer this time
The Colts-Pats has the history. The Patriots knocked the first two contending Colts teams of the Manning-Dungy era out of the playoffs. In 2003 and 2004. Since then they’ve played a ton of tight games and have (along with the Steelers) been the AFCs top powers for the last 6-7 years.

Questions...
Are you sure you are a man and not a football-shaped robot from the future sent back with your encyclopedic knowledge of football for the sole purpose of making the rest of us look like the ass-scratching meat-creatures that we are?
And if so, how do you explain your horrendous showing in last week’s prediction contest?
I mean, only 5 out of 16 against the spread? What happened with that? ;)
Oh, and on a more serious note, do you think the Porpoises are going to triple up on Wayne, thinking that without Gonzales, Manning will be targeting him and Clark more exclusively? If this then frees up Garcon for some Manning-on-waiter-boy action on the other side of the field how many dropped Garcon passes will it take before I throw a whiskey and coke through the big-screen at my local sports bar?

I could e-mail you a picture of me drunk and dressed like a "Bro" if it would convince you I'm not a robot.
Re prediction picks: You win some, you lose some. For now I’ll refer anyone to by second place finish in the vastly larger sample size of last season. I also did reasonably well straight up.
The Phins will probably give Wayne more attention than the Jags did, but I think Clark and Tamme will shred them if they do. With Gijon a surprise addition to the injury report and Gonzo out I think we’ll see a very effective double TE attack.

Never show that pic to anyone, ever. Trust me on this! I would totally burn you on this and post it on Stampede Blue but that would mean I would have to actually look at it again and I don’t think I could do that…

Ok, most embarrassing picture of me ever taken. I swear I don’t dress like that for real, it was just for the themed party. It was my first time out in public with a popped collar, spiked hair or wearing my glasses.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: My chemistry class decided to have their first test on Monday, September 21, from 8:00-9:00 PM. The Colts play the Dolphins at 8:30 that same night. I don't think I can be any more ticked off right now. I think I'm going to kill someone. No, really. I just haven't decided who yet.
