Dolphins Depth Chart Bubble Watch, V. 6
We're now less than one week away from the final round of cuts that will finalize, for the time being, the Dolphins' 53-man roster. That means a number of those "roster bubble players" have less than a week and just one preseason game to prove they belong on the roster come next week. Therefore, it's time to update the "bubble watch" for the final time this preseason.
While in past versions I've made it a point to talk about how this exercise wasn't a prediction of the 53-man roster, but rather a snapshot of just how the roster might look if cuts were to be made right now, this version is as close to a prediction as you can get. I plan on doing a predictions post following the final preseason game. But I'm not sure anything will even change between this version and my final predictions.
Below is the depth chart. Be sure to leave your thoughts on this as well...
| 1st Team | 2nd Team | 3rd Team | |
| QB | Chad Pennington | Chad Henne | Pat White |
| RB | Ronnie Brown | Ricky Williams | Patrick Cobbs/Lex Hilliard |
| FB | Lousaka Polite | ||

| LT | Jake Long | Andrew Gardner |

| RT | Vernon Carey | ||
| 1st Team | 2nd Team | 3rd Team | |
| DE | Kendall Langford | Tony McDaniel |

| K | Dan Carpenter | ||
| P | Brandon Fields | ||
| LS | John Denney |
PUP: Matt Roth
Last 5 On: Lex Hilliard, Andrew Gardner, John Nalbone, Erik Walden, Charlie Anderson
First 5 Off: Brandon London, Nate Garner, William Kershaw, Courtney Bryan, Joey Haynos
Next 5 Off: Joey Thomas, J.D. Folsom, Rod Wright, James Robinson, Ryan Baker
Some thoughts:
- At this point, I don't see any way Matt Roth starts the season on the active roster. He seems destined for the PUP, which will keep him out for the first six weeks. Depending on his progress, he could then be placed on Injured Reserve, ending his season.
- Truth be told, I'm fairly confident in the above chart. The only real decision I went back and forth on was the battle between Lex Hilliard and Brandon London. I don't think Hilliard would sneak through waivers, either, to make it onto Miami's practice squad. And even if he did, he could be poached at any time (a la Jalen Parmele last season). I think that there's no way both make the team and that this final week will play a major role in which one sticks and which one doesn't. I'm leaning towards Hilliard right now, but that could easily change between now and the conclusion of Thursday night's preseason finale.
- While you all know by now that I'm squarely on the John Nalbone bandwagon, I'm not 100% confident he beats out Joey Haynos. But I've been very impressed with Nalbone's blocking ability. However, he is certainly a practice squad candidate.
- J.D. Folsom had shown enough to be practice squad worthy - at least in my book. One year of practice and training could really go a long way towards Folsom becoming a capable reserve inside linebacker and solid special teams contributor.

Thoughts
I believe your 4 point below are the only decision’s left for the 53 man roster. Right now I’m thinking London over Lex and Nalbone over Haynos. I still don’t like Lex because he hasn’t proven he can hang onto the ball. But, the decision will come down to who’s better special team player so that may not matter. It will suck to lose Haynos because of his size but he hasn’t been able to set himself apart. That’s why I give Nalbone the nod.
I really think J.D. Folsom can become something special because he kept the plays in front of him. It looked like he could really read an offense because it seemed like he was always around the ball. He should have two int’s but he second guessed and decided to keep the play in front of him instead of jump the route. I really hope he doesn’t get poached.

Baggage or not, Marshall makes are team better. Maybe even a title contender. But I wouldn’t want to trade for him. I would shy away from giving up a high draft pick.

lex/london
truth be told i like london more as a player right now…but we have alot of young WR’s locked up for some time and with ricky retiring, ronnie possibly not coming back(hope he does) i think miami has no choice but to keep lex and not risk losing him… big big backs that can run like he does has more value to miami in the long run…we’ll see though. as for nalbone haynos hope john makes the team, i live down the road from monmouth college and he was a tough player here and i hear he works hard so best of luck to him.

But four deep?
Hilliard would really only get a chance if Cobbs was to go down. Even then, minimal carries. I say when in doubt, keep the guy who brings the most to the table. In this case its London for being a WR and his work in special teams

i know what you mean
but theres a better chance of london passing through waivers then hilliard…240 pound backs that run like him are a big asset especially when next year you could be down two running backs. look at miamis receivers age and contracts right now. i love a special teamer that can contribute lke london and i really dont want him to go but hilliard is a bull who will not clear waivers.

Sparano himself has said Lex has been contributing on ST.
Sure he won’t get many carries this year without injuries, but with Ricky and Ronnie’s Dolphin futures in doubt it makes more sense to keep a good potential replacement. Whereas in the WR department, we have more stable depth with 5 young guys who I believe are all under contract for at least another year.

I hope so cause I’ve liked what I’ve seen from him and if Jason Ferguson goes down (knock on wood) I don’t think Soliai can handle the job by himself.

Walden/London
I know Walden has been very good on ST, but when would he ever see the field otherwise? With 5 OLB’s ahead of him we would have to get killed with injuries at that position for him to play. London on the other hand can play ST and play in games at WR. With only 5 WR’s on the squad running a spread offense, with an injury, we are short. We know about GC’s leg and Ginn is a strong breeze away from getting hurt. As unsure as I am about our not so special ST, having London contribute on both ST and offense may make him a better choice as well as more needed injury insurance.

Just a thought...
If pennington doesn’t re-sign to back up henne next year…would you pull the trigger on tavaris jackson to back henne up? you could run the wildcat off an audible right at the line and really screw a defense up and since princess brett showed up he has been playing lights out in pre season…its nothing special but i think he could be worth a shot since we dont know what henne or white will be yet

by Phin king on Sep 1, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yessss
but “wild pat” would be subbed in and the defense would know wildcat before the huddle even breaks…plus i said a back up QB…meaning a guy i know can take snaps from center right now if needed. i dont know what white can or cannot do….i just figured to have a viable backup if pennington left that could do both couldnt hurt….and can we wait before we give it this wild pat nickname being we have no idea how hes going to look come crunch time.
by DRINKtheGINN on Sep 1, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think we got White to be the back up for Henne.
I don’t think the trifecta would spend a 2nd rounder on a guy just so he can run the wildcat and that’s it. They took Pat White to be the back up for Henne and as another option as QB of the future should Henne not pan out….
Tavaris Jackson chances of landing in Miami next season = 0.0%
I’m pretty positive the Fins will draft yet another QB in next years draft (in the later rounds).

Having 3 good QB’s is always a positive. And if one of them should step up and take the starting job, we can always trade one of the other 2 similar to what Atlanta did with Schaub. They got a 2nd rounder for him from the Texans….

You bring up a good point.
But if Pennington doesn’t re-sign, the Trifecta will search for a proven veteran QB, not a guy like Tavaris Jackson who the only thing he’s proven is that he’s a bust.
Personally, I’m thinking more along the lines of Kerry Collins….
But this is all ofcourse IF Pennington doesn’t re-sign with the Fins. I sure hope he does.

Trade Idea: David Martin and Greg Camarillo to KC for their 5th Rounder
They just lost WR Devard Darling to injury and they have Brad Cottam and Sean Ryan (remember him?) as their top two TEs (they also just lost another TE to injury).
Then Lex Hilliard, Joey Haynos, AND Brandon London ALL make the team.

He will want insane money no matter where he would be picked and no one will want to waste a pick. I think he doesn’t get into NFL until 2011 and then for a very low guaranteed contract with some very fat incentives. With the Raiders!

i think London stays and Cammy goes.
This last game is going to be telling. I would expect to see a competition of sorts between Turner and London. I would also expect to see something similar between Bess and Camarillo. And like WNY said in the WR post, everyone at every position is actually competing for that last roster spot. I don’t think they keep 6 at WR, because I think they will want to keep Hilliard, or Moses. But Hilliard might actually be able to make the PS initially, until other teams run into an injury problem at RB.

They might PUP List Cammy instead of releasing him.

they cant put Cam on PUP
if you are on the active roster to begin training camp, you can’t get put on the PUP list.

Wasn't Roth on the active list at the beginning of camp? His injury didn't become known until after camp opened.

Ted Ginn
okay im really praying the ginn of week 1 preseason is the ginn of the future. not only because i want to keep my super cool username but, i like the threat he brings to the table. I think it might open things up alot to have him #1 hartline #2 and bess in the slot because is the perfect slot reciever. i think Camarillo might wind up being the odd man out just because hes battling bess for the slot. and i really hope turner pans out. so what you think ginn this season big? yey or ney

I expect a waiver pick up
I expect the dolphins to pikk up a DT or ILB on the waiver wire, those positions are pretty week IMO I;m not sure what will be available in terms of the DT position but there shud be a bunch of solid ILBs out there for us to pik from.

Perfect, Just One Thing
Greg Camarillo is definitely a starter, not a backup!!!
by KingRolfRocks on Sep 1, 2009 4:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
with Hartline starting the past 2 games, I had no choice but to move him up
Not to mention Bess was the game 1 starter a few weeks back. I don’t think Camarillo is 100% yet. If he was, he’d win the starting job easily because he is that good (in my opinion).

Roth quote of the day...
“I’m not concerned,” Roth said. “I wish I could talk about it, but medically I’m not allowed to,” he said. “The situation is this, it’s something medical. I’m not concerned about all the other stuff. I’m just trying to get out there on the field, the sooner the better.”
Medically I’m not allowed to talk about it? What does that even mean?
This situation is just strange.
OTOH, other teams are starting to release guys. I’m expecting the Phins to pick up a few players, don’t be surprised.

Is it possible to
hang onto Hilliard long enough to trade and put london on practice squad? Or is it to risky to lose london? If most feel that lex will be in so much demand that he will not make it thru waivers why not try to get something for him. Sounds like a Parcells idea.
by michphishfan on Sep 1, 2009 7:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Cause as soon as you offer him to another team,
that team already knows you’re planning on putting him on the practice squad. So why give up something, when you can get him for nothing? Whereas I think London has a better chance not being taken on the practice squad, but I don’t know if he can be put on there.

I was working on my latest list
but i’ll wait until friday now….
but couple of points…
i don’t feel strongly but I still think haynos makes it and nalbone goes to the PS… but marting to the browns or cincy for a 5th rounder wouldn’t shock me friday…
Bryan – is going to make the team, ST has been too awful this camp for them not to make the squad.
so i have Walden, bryan, J Allen making the team … Thomas, london, hilliard not although i’m close to saying Anderson has played himself off the team with a poor preseason… and a good one by moses.
dotson – while liked by the staff has to have one of those monster game 4s likel last year or he has to be in the sights so to speak.
Chad Pennington - The Lame Ducker aka the progress stopper.
So do you think the Jets intentionally did it to set the organization back 3 years or was it just an unintended side effect of their move.
