Last 5 Off
Courtney Bryan,  Joe Kowaleski,  John Nalbone,  JD Folsom,  Lex Hilliard

Last 5 ON

Rod Wright, Louis Polite, Brandon Frye, David Martin, Joey Thomas

Notes…

Once again I cheated by putting Roth on the PUP list to start the season… if he ends his contract hold out ever recovers from his mysterious groin injury then Rod Wright will likely be looking for a new home.

The trade of Allerman, and EK did little to change my projections as I had both off my roster in my last projections…

http://www.thephinsider.com/2009/8/11/986054/my-crack-at-the-game-1-roster

With that in mind – I have David Martin on the same short list of Vets who likely will have a new home once September starts… My reasoning is that the team can not cut Haynos being the only above average run blocker(a point of emphasis for the team) at the position, and if the team feels that someone else will pick up Nalbone then they’ll move the most expendable TE who is at the end of their contract. Martin more likely to be moved than fassano.

Although Polite was a first down machine last year, the team is emphasizing run blocking this year (did I mention that already) and that isn’t his best attribute, so don’t be surprised if Kowaleski beats out polite for the position. (Remember kowaleski is a DC Coach P recruit at the cuse and TE Coach Deleon was his OC – so long term ties to the coaching staff seem to help or in this case equalize polite’s ties to the staff)

Although Joey Thomas is #5 on my last on list, I think he is a lock or close to it to make the team.

If Brandon Frye whiffs in game 3 and/or 4 a few more times that result in direct hits on mr Henne then add Nate Garner to the roster and bid adieux to mr frye.  Guys on the cut line getting the future of the franchise hammered don’t last on rosters long.

Finally – I think the last roster spot is going to come down to Courtney Bryan/Lex Hilliard/Rod Wright as all others on my list are direct position battles (kowalewski vs polite) that will not change the final count numbers. So I wouldn’t be shocked if ST ace Bryan beats out Rod Wrights D-line depth since there is so much versatility between the D-line and the OLB and the DEs.

Notes on the roster….

Depth on the defensive side of the ball is much better than on the offensive… the D-line is deep with a good mix of vets and youth, so don’t expect much change after roster cuts,  where as LB is pretty deep right now, yet there is a lack of youth, in particular up the middle,so I wouldn’t be shocked by some cut down chumming here… say Charlie Anderson or Lionel Dotson getting axed/moved for someone giving up on an early round pick…

The secondary is pretty deep right now and is scary young. I won’t be surprise by some big numbers being put against them early(say Indy & SD), but hopefully they will have short memories and by the end of the year will be a solid bunch… it’s going to be ugly back there for a little while folks.

Finally – there really isn’t any O-line depth… after the first team you have a couple of malingerers (berger, Frye) paired with some what really are practice squanders (garner, gardner)…. Expect some cut down chumming here, especially if they think they can sneak gardner onto the practice squad….

After that the rest of the Offense is pretty much set, other then STers kowalewski vs vets Polite and youth Nalbone vs vets martin …. Hilliard might sneak onto the roster at FB??? And Nalbone if they can’t deal martin and are afraid of some thievery could make the roster… but I don’t see it at this time.

Cut Joey Thomas, Rod Wright, David Martin (trade?) instead

Keep Lex Hilliard, Erik Walden (convert to backup RILB?), and John Nalbone

Abandoned the Draft Sean Smith at #25 Bandwagon to Join the Draft Sean Smith at #61 Bandwagon and get Vontae Davis and Chris Clemons. Trio > me.

yeah

walden is a guy who i thought was a lock early on to make the club… i just don’t see enough out of him
to think he’s going to make it, and with the new “2 man wedge” rule i don’t see him as having the same need….
that said he was the best STer on the team last year… so maybe they will keep him…

and as i said – i in my write up – trade martin/keep nalbone is possible…

and hilliard/wright are 2 of the 3 playing off for spot #53

Chad Pennington - The Lame Ducker aka the progress stopper.

So do you think the Jets intentionally did it to set the organization back 3 years or was it just an unintended side effect of their move.

I can't help this. To the right is a "news" headline - Plaxi says that club security knew he had a gun.

What he doesn’t say is that club security had no idea Plaxi was gonna try a .40 cal penisectomy in the club!

i'm not really surprised

that something so trivial could overwhelm you, but he wouldn’t make my team but yes he will start game 1… but i don’t expect him to be starting game 15.

Cut Polite and keep Lex Hilliard. Cut Joey Thomas and keep Courtney Bryan.

I also like David Martin but if Nalbone steps up he will be trade bait, I agree.

This Is The Best Parring Down...

The Phins have had to make in over a decade.

Wow. Think about it.

Don’t lose Hilliard. He moves too niftily for a big man.

We're at 72 now so we can add then subtract a week later.

Any thoughts on who those wild cards might be?

Armchair QB's always complete the pass and armchair coaches always pick the right players.

Yes, Larry Little is still the man.

I like it

as much as I’ve liked Hilliard this season, I agree with you that I don’t think he beats out our top 3 backs.

I think we may keep 7 on DL though (2 per position and an extra) with R Wright getting cut, and either Walden or Brandon London making the team in place of him.

ok - then

who are you going to cut to put them on the team? … which is one of the things i like about this exercise… you have choices to make.

you may like hilliard, but he hasn’t been a great STer, he has 3 backs ahead of him, and if you are going to carry and extra back who are you getting rid of?

I like Hilliard

and think that he could be a good replacement for Ricky in a couple years, or Ronnie next year if they decide not to re-sign him, but I can’t see getting rid of Polite to make room for him. Polite was just too clutch for us last season for us to to put another RB in his place, and then we’d have to find another FB in a couple of years. As much as I like Hilliard and think he could be useful, I think that we’re gonna have to put him on the PS and pray nobody snatches him up. We have too many good players at the position that we don’t want to give any of them up!!

yup

that is why i don’t have him on my 53… he will have to do very well on ST the next 2 games to make the team…
but i do have to say i like him a LOT more this year than last, when i didn’t see anything special in him.

i second that, or god for bid catastrophy strikes?

what should happen if say, we go through marino years & can’t find a RB.

Nice job man!

i am not much into predictions, but i DO see the choices between Nalbone and Martin and Haynos as difficult. I also think that Hilliard could play FB, and they let Polite go.

yeah it's kind

of fun to see where you have to make your choices…. and martin is better than haynos/nalbone but he is in the last year of his contract and isn’t exactly the best of blockers…. but his suicidal pass catches of the lame duckers lobs down the field last year should earn him some cred with the admin…. so if he stays and they don’t think nalbone will sneak through… then what.

Polite, who isn’t a great STer… seems like easy fodder… yeah i know he made a ton of first downs (but are we really all saying ronnie wouldn’t have had they given him the ball?) so i wouldn’t be shocked if he is let go.
