Henne is the messiah . . .

I am sick and tired of all the BS that Henne is “the messiah” and that CP is just a caretaker progress-stopper and all that other BS that has been spouted here! Anyone who has the gall to say that Henne would have made this pass or that pass or not cost the Phins 11 points so far in the PS needs to whip out their crystal ball and lay out EXACTLY what will happen this year to a less than interested 3rd party. (I nominate Teal Deal or Temson - reasonable realistic closet Phins fans). My crystal ball broke years ago, and the replacement has been on back order from Office Depot for years!

I have asked several of the Henne lovers here who talk about him being "our" "franchise QB" just exactly what is THEIR definition of "franchise QB"

I have asked this question about 5 or 6 times over the last month or so. To date none of them has been willing to post THEIR definition of “franchise QB” (nor even someone else’s!)

If the definition of “franchise QB” is that the only prerequisite is he can throw the ball 50 yards downfield, then I do not want to see Phins get a franchise QB

If the definition of “franchise QB” is a QB that gets wins, low TO rate, protects the ball and the team, is a LEADER not a bloody prima dona, then . . . gee . . . we HAVE one! – CP10

CP10 was an integral and important part of this TEAM going from 1-15 to winning the AFCE in ONE season! If you can not give the man the respect he has EARNED than IMHO you have no business posting here! This place is for fans of the TEAM, not one individual. If you want to heap praise on ONE player go to the Pats Pulpit, ’cause as far as Patsie fans and the media, there is ONLY one player there that counts!

Griese did not have Marino's arm and Henne is no Marino

And Griese has rings and Marino doesn’t.

I will take a Griese style QB as my franchise QB any day of the millenia!

(Matty, notice that I cleaned it up from the comment stage to the Post stage - does NOT mean I am any less ticked off, just that I respect you!)

Thanks DIB, sam & Medic. I never thought I would post here, much less 3 recs in 25 min!

I agree with what tuscan said as well – that to be a true franchise QB takes several seasons of success. My point is that CP10 has taken that first very big step on that road!

The people here are the true hard-core fans of the Phins. They know a lot more about the game as well as each player on the team. I count myself as one of them, because of what I have learned from everyone here, Matty especially! I could name a whole bunch more, but suffice it to say that if you have been here posting comments and posts for the last 2 months I mean you. Even if I don’t always agree with you, I still respect you and your knowledge.

The first big step on that road???

You realize this is his 10th year right? He missed that road along time ago. As for your definition of a franchise QB, I’ll agree with most of it. But I think you need to be more specific about getting wins. A true franchise QB wins games not only in the regular season, but under pressure in the playoffs. Penne’s record in the playoffs, 2-4. That’s why good defenses play a tight zone, cutting off the middle of the field, leaving the sidelines and deep pass open (throws Penne can’t make). Now I’m not ready to say Henne is a franchise QB either, but he has more potential than Penne does. As far as using Griese as an example, it’s too outdated an argument. The league was a run heavy league at the time, and the Dolphins had the best running game at the time (1972 they avg. over 200 yds rushing a game). If you want to win playoff games with a weak armed QB, you gotta have a dominant running game.

I don't think Henne is any kind of messiah

Is he the future of franchise? Yes. You don’t like, you can follow Pennington out if he doesn’t take a backseat to Henne next year or maybe this year.

Pennington is a great guy, a proven leader, but he is also a 33 yr old QB on his last legs with a noodle arm thats doing nothing but getting worse.

You sir posted:

This place is for fans of the TEAM, not one individual.

And you are correct.

Pennington was a part of turning this team around, but he was not the REASON. This team turned around when they hired Bill Parcells. Then with the coaches coming in, letting go of the dead weight. Smart drafting (it seems) and gettin quality FA, not overpaying for big names.

You also posted:

If you want to heap praise on ONE player go to the Pats Pulpit.

Or we can come to this fanpost and read how great Pennington is.

Pennington Helped us win some games, yes, but don’t fool yourself or us telling us he is the reason. We won alot of games by solid OL play. Two (some will argue 3 or even more) RBs. The wildcat formation. And a revamp (of sorts) defense.

Champs and Franchise QBs are made in the post season and lets go back to the Ravens-Fins game and see how our Franchise QB did then. Better yet go to all of Pennington’s playoff game and see how he has performed.

We are a rebuilding team looking to the future, don’t let last yearss sucess fool you. Get with it bud, Chad knows he came in for 2 years, everyone knows that. The coaching staff raves about Henne and from what I’ve seen them do with the Fins so far it looks like they know what they are doing.

If they believe in Henne, I do too. I’m all for the future, and finsihing the rebuilding process. And won’t mortgage it because we had 1 dream season with a great guy at the helm.

If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom.

I specifically did NOT talk about how great CP is. Many of the CP haters have shown a total lack of respect for him.

They talk about how Henne would have made this throw, or made it better, or that having CP in the 2 PS games so far cost the Phins 11 points, etc. Some have said trade CP NOW the heck with waiting for next year for Henne to start!

I DO trust the trifecta. They have said CP is the starter this year. Part of that is probably respect for what and how he did last year and another part is that they (you know, the guys who are paid VERY well because of their football knowledge) obviously do not think Henne is ready.

Cause I know you don't have a crystal ball that works, cause you would have known that Henne wouldn't be in to try to make the throw.

LOL

Saying he would have made it does not take into account the overthrows or ones too hot to handle that he has made so far this PS.

I'll admit the guy needs some refining.

But he definitely has the ability to open up our offense, which would allow us to expand the playbook, and give defenses a harder time. You do have to remember that this last preseason game was the longest time he’s been in a NFL game that I can think of.

so if the lame ducker is so good

why was the team 2nd to last in the league at the 1/2 way point in 3rd and 8 or longer (2-32) and bottow five in td’s in the red zone….

since you can’t checkdown and get td’s and first downs….

why do you show so little respect for ronnie. he WAS the reason the team made the playoffs. he was the reason they had an offense in the red zone, he was the guy that DC’s game planed against…. and some how the team was 11-5 with the lame ducker starting but 11-3 with ronnie starting.

You're kidding yourself right?

You don’t draft back to back 2nd round QBs just to hold onto CP10 for the duration of his NFL career. It does NOT MAKE SENSE. When Chad Henne, Pat White, or any other QB is ready to start or if CP10 starts blowing, they will take the reigns.

Actually

At least that’s the plan to anyone who understands the situation, including the 33-year-old Pennington, who is entering the final year of his contract with no talks about an extension under way. The Dolphins’ plan to have Pennington lead the transition to second-year quarterback Chad Henne(notes) is about as secret as Kim Kardashian’s love life.

"This organization has been up front with me from day one. It’s not like they’re trying to pull the wool over my eyes," Pennington said. "They told me from day one what their future goals were and why they drafted [Henne]. – Pennington

IMO

it’s a guy in his prime, who takes care of the ball, and can either take over and win the game, or be conservative and NOT lose the game.

A guy like Manning, Brady, and those types, who know exactly when to take a chance at the end zone, or throw it away and punt.

well I left out a whole lot but yeah that one too

that would fall under the all-encompassing term of Leadership. That covers many things, from practice habits, knowing how to break down film, gaining the respect of your teammates, being the “coach on the field,” inspiring the O and D like you mentioned, deflecting praise and absorbing blame (which takes the pressure off his teammates), and a host of other things that a QB does outside of just passing the ball.

by Little Nicky 21 on Aug 23, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Neo - "it sure isn’t a 33 yr old qb at the end of his career"

lets see:

Bob Griese – 27 at 1st SB win – 6th year for same team (6 Pro Bowls)
Joe Willie – 25 at only SB win – 3rd year for same team (1 Pro Bowl)
Joe Montana – 29 at 1st SB win – 4th year for same team, 34 for last SB win (8 ProB)
Tom Brady – 25 at 1st SB win – 3rd year for same team, 32 this year (4 ProB)

I guess Tommie boy is no longer a “franchise QB”
And Montana wasn’t a “franchise QB” when 49’s won 4th SB he QBed. Just a fluke.

The one thing that stands out to me is that ALL of them had played for ONE team for at least THREE years before they won a SB. Half were spot on your age requirement, half were over it. Montana was almost as old as CP when 49’s won last SB!

What I'm saying

The oldest of those guys was Montana at age 25 when he joined his team, with a good 10 yrd to be his team QB.

You can’t come in at 32-33 yrs old on a rebuilding team, and make no mistake about it, thats what we are, and be that “franchise qb”.

I’ll argue anyone about that, lets go.

lets see

brady was born aug 1977 and he won a superbowl in his 2nd season with the pats (2001 – drafted in 2000)
that makes him 24 for the first win… (kind of lines up with henne?)

montana won the superbowl in 1981 his 3rd season (drafted in 1979) and he was born 1956 … i think that makes him 25…

so i think you should check some of your facts.

and several of penny's passes deserved to be pointed out

the ted ginn pass interference call from the jags game is another one. but ya i agree its wrong to point out one players inconsistencies and not anothers. but to be fair to the haters they didnt point out penny’s incompletions, so there was no need to point out henne’s. chad henne was chewed out by many posters here for his interception throw against the jaguars. so i think MOST people on here are offering fair criticism.
its kind of hard not to point out the under throws when they are happening consistently. its a good argument though… ben rothlesburger had worse stats than pennington and no one is calling for him to be benched.

The under throws are a problem

I won’t argue with that. But the limitations in Pennington’s arm kinda mirror the bad habits Henne has shown also. Staring down your WR, throwing off target into coverage, or making a bad read is just as damaging as coming up short on a deep ball, so it’s not like either guy is perfect.

I was just typing

Henne has a stronger arm, and there are throws he can make that Pennington can’t. That’s fact. But Pennington is also more accurate and has better timing than Henne, so there are also passes that Pennington throws much better than Henne. Playing QB isn’t all about loading up and throwing the ball through a brick wall. All I’m saying is that just because Henne has a cannon (and the kid DOES have a cannon) doesn’t mean he does everything better than Pennington.

I for one, am looking forward to Henne taking the reigns of this team, he looks legit, except for a few correctable habits (such as staring down his WR’s).

yeah but you have to be given time with the recievers to develop that sense of knowing where they are.

And one thing i see in henne, that you dont see in some of these busts of a qbs, is that willingness to take that hit as long as they can get that ball in there. You see in preseason that he has no problem stepping up into the pocket and rocketing that pass to the reciever despite the eminent defender about to hit him.

Personally I think Tebow may be remembered as the greatest college QB ever.

If only because of his leadership to & for the team. This is especially true if UF wins National Champ again this year.

I don’t think his skill set transfers well to NFL style of QB play, so I don’t really see him drafted as nor used as an NFL QB. More like a TE than WR. I haven’t seen the burner speed for an NFL WR from him. If he is TE or WR he could be one of the best ever though because of understanding what the QB is facing, reading D, etc.

lets not repeat history...

We’re always always chasing new QBs. Even myself got caught up with the lets get Henne out there now fad.

Yeah we drafted two second round QBs and rightly so… you can’t not have a QB. Lets face it though things have changed on the better. Pennington has another year to prove it, and if he stays consistent then its time for that extension. If we don’t someone else will and we’ll be stuck with a QB who really didn’t earn the starting job, potentially sending us back to where we started after ditching Marino.

The Ravens game sucked =(. We were down on WRs with little depth. Their secondary was awesome, their defensive line was fast. The Ravens were also very well known for stopping the run. Is there anyone who could’ve honestly dealt with that situation any better?

another good reason to keep CP10

Look back at the games we win. In the 4th quarter our defense gets us the opportunity on offense. Chad Pennington proves his worth as starting QB by executing game winning drives. He finishes the game and brings out winning mentalities, the difference between going 5-11 and 11-5.

The real problem was we had coaches who wanted to win, and win now.

That’s why you wind up with guys like Feeley, Lemon, Griese, Fiedler, Culpepper, and Green. The coaches didn’t want to spend a draft pick on a QB and let him develop for 2 years. We had a team that was always just on the cusp of breaking through. Problem was the missing piece was QB, and Wannstedt, Saban, and Cam did nothing to fix that. Cam at least tried, although Beck turned out to be a complete failure. None of those coaches were willing to go into re-building mode. It took a 1-15 season and a complete managment makeover to finally set things straight.

well the reason

the line had so much issues … is bmore gave up on the long ball – stuff everyone in the box and came after pennington….
and he didn’t have the arm strenght to fire off his back foot into tight coverage and when he went deep to the WIDE OPEN T GINN his ball floated long enough that ed reed was able to cross the entire field to pick it off….

There is a well established history of failure vs good defenses with pennington and to go one further below average arm strenght QB’s…. they will only get you so far… yes you might want the nooodle arm to marry your daughter you just don’t want him as the starting QB for your playoff team.

I'll agree with ya' about getting beat at the line of scrimmage.

But I think it was more crucial with the running game than the passing game. Once they took away our ground game, it forced Pennington to have to throw the ball, and that’s right where Baltimore wanted us.

by luvs2drnk on Aug 27, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, except the Titans.

The Titans ran the ball very well against Baltimore with Eddie George (126 yds). Unfortunately, one 90 yd punt return, and 50 yd INT return later, they lose 24-10.

I don't think anyone is knocking Pennington

when they say Henne is the future. It’s a fact that Pennington is over the hill as far as production in the NFL. He is good and will be for a couple of years, but the end will come in the next couple of years for Penni and Henne will step in hopefully for a long time. Therefore Penni is now and Henne is the future

12-4 in 2009.

by phatfinfan on Aug 23, 2009 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

Over the hill?

Didnt he complete one of the best QB seasons on record last year? 17 td 9 int something like a 69% completion rate? Id say he is not “over the hill” as of yet. He is a really good QB and should be for a few more years to come. Im sorry to all the haters, but I would rather have Penne as our starting QB then 1/2 the other starters in the league. I personally believe he is a top 12 QB. Maybe even in the 10th spot.

What’s the flaw in extending CP and allowing a legitimate competition for QB for Henne? If Henne can match or outplay CP we can try to convince him to support us as a backup or find a suitable trade to a most likely desperate Denver team?

People should stop trying to rush the kid into something he is not ready for. I think the ones who want him in now should look back at a past QB with all the tallent and skills that should have been the future of the QB position in Miami who was thrown into the wild armed only with a pocket knife.. the wolves made a quick meal of him… John Beck.

Chad is our QB

and he’s a damn good QB, he led us to the playoffs, he had the second highest passer rating in the NFL, he is the most accurate QB ever, EVER. He is a great leader and mentor for Henne and White.

Definition Of Franchise Quarterback

A QB who is signed to a 6 year or longer contract and expected to start for 6 years or longer as the QB.

So as of now the Dolphins do not have a franchise quarterback.

Henne shows a lot of promise and maturity. He has a strong arm, throws accurately and has a brand of mental toughness that is rarely seen in players his age.

Chad Pennington is a elite quarterback who makes up for his poor arm strength with savvy decision making and precise use of the chalk board.

Who knows what we have in Pat White. So far he has shown us that he has mental toughness and can make good decisions with the ball.

So in summation: Chad Henne is an exciting potentiality for the Phins but as of right now Pennington is the better QB. So Pennington will play until Henne can surpass him, which in my opinion (please note the opinion aspect peoples) will be sooner than later.

Pat White is too much of an enigma/unpolished to even be in the consideration.

End of story.

I can not argue with what you said about franchise QB Phinisher.

I wonder about the 6 year specificity though. Didn’t Snachez and Stafford only get 5 yr deals?

My comment about the def is because there have been about QB’s that can throw the “deep” ball being the seemingly only requirement to be a franchise QB

Philip Rivers signed a 6-year contract...

Worth a boat load of cash. Francise QB. Eli Manning. Franchise QB.

This is pretty easy stuff people.

definition of a franchise QB

Well there isn’t one… the reality is you know when you have one and you know when you don’t….
but a franchise QB is a QB who you build or have built a team around, one with unique physical abilities (ie above average if not great physical attributes) who becomes the unquestioned leader of the team…

now as to your ignorance about griese vs. marino – while i do agree that griese was a “smarter” player than marino who made a lot of stupid decisions that cost the teams some games… griese was an above average QB on teams with great defenses and powerful running attacks…. neither of which marino had…

and one of the other attributes of franchise QB’s is their franchises tend to win multiple superbowls or at least will contend for them on a reqular basis… where as caretakers might have the starts align one year but then they drop off the face of the earth.

Chad Pennington - The Lame Ducker aka the progress stopper.

So do you think the Jets intentionally did it to set the organization back 3 years or was it just an unintended side effect of their move.

I have no ignorance abiut Griese vs Marino. I watched em both play.

The only vs in my book is that Griese has rings, Marino doesn’t.

I say CP is more like Griese and Henne is more like Marino. IMHO

Health has to figure in on the Definition of a Franchise QB

Franchise QB’s play every game, year in and year out. Pennington has only played 16 games twice in 9 seasons. If leadership is a requirement for a franchise QB, you can’t lead when not playing.

Lefty, If you believe the media, the messiah is in the White House. What I was saying is

that at this point I have no idea how good or bad Henne will be. I have yet to see him play against a 1st string D.

And that I am sick and tired of all the hate and lack of respect thrown at CP10. Very much of a “what have you done for me tomorrow” mentality. It also is hate and lack of respect for the trifecta (even if they do not believe that) ’cause they appear to think they know more and better than the guys paid huge amounts for their NFL football knowledge and acumen.

Seriously Dude

There is a couple people here that have shown “hate & disrespect” for CP. There are even fewer that “hate” the new regime. If any at all.

And I love my new Ford. Ford loves that I love it too. Get a grip. Reality needs no messiahs. It needs good Presidents and winning quarterbacks. Oh, and a Joey Porter quote or two.

I run a lazy, booze addled & thoroughly unprofessional Dolphins blog: www.thephinisher.com.

Its the attitude that they know better than the trifecta - "play Henne now & trade CP10" statements

that is showing huge lack of respect for the trifecta. Sparano/Ireland/Parcells obviously do not think Henne is ready for prime-time.

Hell, look at the Snachez situation! If the JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJets had kept CP, you think Snachez would be the starter this season?

Generally IMO it is the media that annoints messiahs. (In some cases it is that person themself). I have a grip, and its a bloody good one. Its that I am so tired and pissed about the CP haters. I think I did say that in the post.

And don’t leave out some Channing quotes!
