Dolphins Training Camp: Open Thread 8/11

Less than a week until preseason game #1 for the Dolphins.  I don't think I've ever been as anxious for the preseason as I am this year.  I guess that's what an improbable division title will do to you.  That and the fact that the preseason is starting very late this year.

Today is just a single practice day sandwiched in between two doubles.  It'll be interesting to see if there's been any more shuffling in terms of who works with what unit.  Let's also hope for a good bounce-back day for Chad Henne.

As always, use this thread for all of your training camp discussion.  As you find links to various practice reports, post them below.  I will update this post as time allows with links to the reports to keep everyone as updated as possible.

i don't know why there is a big deal made about "henne struggling"

he is going to have his ups and downs, but better to have them while CP is first string.

No big deal.

I think it is better for him to struggle now…. otherwise, we would have an early QB discussion…

CP10 won’t lead us all the way… as good as he is.

I'm not the biggest CP10 fan, but teams have won Super Bowls with worse....

2002 Bucs – Brad Johnson
2000 Ravens – Trent Dilfer
1990 Giants – Jeff Hostetler
1985 Bears – Jim McMahon
1982 Redskins – Joe Theismann
You don’t need to be a great QB to win a Super Bowl, but having a good D and run game does help as evidence above.

Worse QB teams won 10% of the sample...

i.e., you gotta have a solid QB to win the other 90%

I only gave a few examples.....

I don’t think Terry Bradshaw, Doug Williams, Bob Griese, Mark Rypien, Phil Simms, Ken Stabler, or Jim Plunkett were any better than CP10 overall. They were all effective game managers who didn’t turn the ball over. But none of them were dominant QB’s. So adding these QB’s that brings the percentage up to 16 out of 43, or 37%. One out of every 3 ain’t bad. I thought about adding Brady and Montana as well, but they’ve shown better poise under pressure than CP10 has.

well dilfer

was worse and johnson is about the same….

otherwise the others were much better than the lame ducker…. theismann was pretty good, McMahon was very good before excesses and injuries took their toll and Hos was tough as heck and cold make more throws then the LD ever could.

Chad Pennington - The Lame Ducker aka the progress stopper.

So do you think the Jets intentionally did it to set the organization back 3 years or was it just an unintended side effect of their move.

McMahon was very good?!?!?!?!?

In 15 years the guy never threw more than 3000 yards! As for Theismann, he has slightly better numbers than CP10, but in 3 more years. Hostetler only surpassed 3000 yards passing twice in his 12 years. Pennington’s biggest problem is he’s injury prone, which attributed to his weak arm, but when he’s healthy he’s one of the most accurate QB’s in the game.

by luvs2drnk on Aug 12, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

yes and no

couple of points – all those guys played BEFORE the rule changes that opened up the passing games, which makes marino’s numbers all the more remarkable.

next – as i mentioned mcmahon WAS good, heck very good at times before he broke down…. so yup he wasn’t very good in the end…

hoss – was essentially sims back up and didn’t put up big numbers… plus he was just asked to hand off to morris/anderson et al…

and joey T – just email him… he’ll explain to you way he was great.

Actually the west coast offense started just before Marino got into the league...

McMahon was never any good. He was more injury prone than even CP10. McMahon never played a full season in 15 years!!! Only completed more than 60% of his passes twice. Never threw more than 15 TD’s in a season. Hell he never threw for more than 2400 yds in a season. He benefited playing with Walter Payton, and the great Bear’s defense. had he been a good QB, Chicago might have won more SBs. Hoss had his chances in 91 and 92 with Simms injured, then as the regular starter for the Raiders afterwards. As for Joey T, his bark has always been worse than his bite.

all that matters is the game

of course he’s going to have good games and bad games every QB does so what I still trust him to take over when the time is right

Chad Henne struggling -> NO WAY

Look at this:

Coach Tony Sparano revealed Tuesday that Chad Henne has completed 66 percent of his passes in camp, including 61 percent on third down.

Henne was a 58.3-percent passer as a senior at Michigan, so this confirms that he’s improved since college (although he isn’t facing a pass rush). Still, Chad Pennington is completing more and will definitely start the Fins’ opener.

I think we might not be out of the woods with the early QB discussion…

just keep in mind thaose numbers are only from 11-on-11s

I’d love to know if they are as good in 7-on-7s – which they should be when you really think about it. But you never know.

by Matty I on Aug 11, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah but

henne is playing with the two’s and two rookie receivers and the lame ducker’s percentages are “a little higher” but his yardage is much lower and he’s playing with the firsts and with receivers who know the offense and blockers who can handle the pass rush.

From Omar:
OLB Matt Roth continues to do his rehab work on the side. Looks like he’s missing at least the first few exhibition games.

Dolphins have signed a new fullback, adding former Jet Joe Kowalewski to the training camp roster. He’s from Syracuse, one of few using FB4.

The Dolphins’ begin practice at 2 p.m. today. Check the Sun-Sentinel blog for a blow-by-blow update…http://bit.ly/CSbXE

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano says pay no attention to the depth chart, and gives update on Donald Thomas & Matt Roth. http://bit.ly/7Tsla

Sparano said he’s looking for Lousaka Polite to do a better job finishing blocks. But says he’s a bright guy and learns things easily.

I will be doing a radio segment on 790AM with Sedano and Krystal talking about the Dolphins at 8:30 am tomorrow morning

Long Time No Visit

Let’s all pray that Donald Thomas stays healthy and returns to form. It would be a shame to lose all that potential for another season (and I suspect then forever).

Good to see Henne bounce back from a bad practice. That was all it was, after all. Matty, you’re doing the opposite of what you did with Beck last year. Instead of sunshine and roses its doom and gloom. I kid.

I truly think that Henne will take the field this year and (here comes prediction) stay on it at some point.

He has been “flashing” on those long throws.

Going back on the record with this one too: First Lusaka Polite TD and I’m buying a custom jersey.

actuall he did the same last year

IYRC – just replace Beck with Penne and it’s the same story …. Penne’s bad days are buried and Henne’s faults are in headlines, while reasons are ignored and good days are footnotes.

i’m really not sure why matty doesn’t like Henne or wants him to take over, but matty certainly has somethign against Henne.

Yeah, I Flipped It

The funny thing is, I was one of the bigger proponents of Pennington last year. I knew his accuracy and command would be able to improve the Dolphins considerably.

I’m kidding with Matty. But the man does have his favorites, as we all do.

So much has changed. A year ago a lot of fans had just finished booing JT out of town, were calling Peezy the worst move of the Mueller year, and well, no one should get crap for the QB situation last year. Except of course if you were a John Beck fan. ;)

All that aside, this year’s Dolphins will live or die with their offensive line. Last year they could not play with the better defenses (except the Jets, who it pains me to say had a solid D).

Lets hope Thomas or Murphy step up and that the rest of the line stays healthy.

Again, mark it: 1st Polite TD and I’m buying custom jersey.

That Came Out Wrong

I still like Pennington. A lot. I think the Phins can win with him. I just think that Henne could be something special. In either case it will be the line and Ronnie Brown that will define whether or not the year is a good one.

Penne's got pretty good stats

8th (career) passer rating
30th (career) yards per game
40th (career) passing attempts
17th (active) completions
18th (active) passing yards
19th (active) TD’s
(btw, subtract 1 in the active’s cuz Favre’s done)
He’s in a contract year, has the full confidence of coaches & team mates.

Yeah, we should dump him.
