Dolphins Training Camp: Open Thread 8/10

Don't look now - but we're suddenly just a week away from the Dolphins' first preseason game.

Today begins week two of training camp.  And what better way to begin the second week than with two practices.  The first is scheduled for 9 am.  The second for 5 pm.  Be sure to pay close attention to which players are running with what units.  The second week was when Tony Sparano changed around the depth chart last year - elevating some players and demoting others to see how each player responds.

As always, use this thread for all of your training camp discussion.  As you find links to various practice reports, post them below.  I will update this post as time allows with links to the reports to keep everyone as updated as possible.

Morning Reports: Omar Kelly (Twitter)Armando Salguero (Twitter)Edgar Thompson (Twitter)Sun-Sentinel, PBP, Miami Herald

Note: Dolphins signed K Connor Barth to a two-year contract - providing competition to second-year kicker Dan Carpenter.  Barth spent the 2008 season with the Chiefs, converting 10 of 12 field goals and all 24 extra points.

While the Taylor, Roth, Wake, Porter saga is interesting, I would like to put in a request for some blogs about the non-Long part of the O-line?

There is a new receiver in the house. He’s wearing No. 14. More on him to come later. Also, FB Matt Quillen has quit the team.

Week two of training camp begins with OG Shawn Murphy working as the starting right guard and Donald Thomas as the second teamer.

Do we really need to add a new receiver in the mix?... I mean c'mon!

I want to see a 4 wideout – Ginn on the right outside and then on the right inside be Bess
Then on the left outside it be Turner/Hartline and on inside be Camarillo

There's no risk here.

Develop him on the practice squad, if you succeed, you’ve got a young tall WR and you can spend a draft pick on some other area…

Abandoned the Draft Sean Smith at #25 Bandwagon to Join the Draft Sean Smith at #61 Bandwagon and get Vontae Davis and a 5th Rounder. Trio > me.

Omars twitter for those who dont have

-QB Chad Henne found Anthony Fasano in the back of the end zone for a TD in red zone drill.

-Will Billingsley picked off Pat White for what would have been a pick-6. Billingsley is fighting to retain practice squad spot.

-Cornerback Nate Jones is being worked as a punt returner, returning to a role he held in college at Rutgers.

-Brandon Frye is working as a lect tackle today, crosstraining. Frye had a good OTA camp but has slipped under the radar so far.

-Lex Hilliard is working as the second team fullback. Hilliard actually looked decent last week. But they do have enough tailbacks.

-Sean Smith is working with the starters as the cornerback opposite Will Allen. Eric Green is now on second team paired with Vontae Davis.

-Cameron Wake took first team reps at weakside LB while Joey Porter took it easy. Wake was having more difficultly with Jake Long.

-Tony McDaniel is being used as the backup right end.

-DE Randy Starks was being used as the starting right end. Phillip Merling is getting reps as the backup left end.

-Safety Chris Clemons would have sacked Chad Henne during goal line drills.

-Lex Hilliard scored a goal line touchdown running behind Donald Thomas, who did contact drills with the second team.

Omar on rookie Center
Joe Berger is working as the second-team left guard with rookie Mark Lewis the second-team center. Lewis, by the way, is no dummy. He earned his Oregon degree in sociology with a minor in business. He’s a former college shotputter — track and field is huge in Eugene, of course — who ranks fifth in school history with an indoor shot put of 56 feet-7 1/2 inches. Rivals.com named him first-team all-Pac 10 as a senior, when he helped pave the way for a school-record rushing attack that gobbled up 280.1 yards per game (second nationally).

35 minutes ago from TwitterBerry Sparano on Davis: “I like the way he’s coming. He’s not afraid to compete.”

37 minutes ago from TwitterBerry Sparano said Vontae Davis is physical, has catchup speed, and is not afraid. But they need to get his eyes out of the backfield.

38 minutes ago from TwitterBerry Coach Sparano said Phillip Merling was fairly productive in the scrimmage, but coaches want to see Randy Starks on right side

Just in case anyone needs some reading material....

Here’s some more tweets and links from Edgar for those of you who can’t access it at work:

- Tony Sparano just wrapped up, said coaches plan to increase reps of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams this week.

- Tony Sparano on Sean Smith and Randy Starks w/ 1st team: “We want to shuffle the deck a little bit after the first week.”

- TS said Vontae Davis has done “some young-guy things,” like biting on 2 double-moves Sat. Davis needs 2 “get his eyes out of the backfield.”

- Tony Sparano said a period of goal line offense this morning was the first live contact drill of training camp.

- On new WR James Robinson, Tony Sparano said, “he has size and the guy can flat-out go.” The 26 yo ex-CFLer is a developmental player.

- On FB Matt Quillen being the 4th player to quit the team, Tony Sparano said, “It might be me. I told them, I’m not for everybody.”

- Tony Sparano said b/c of the heat, the hitting and mental grind of camp, sticking around “has an awful lot to do with passion,” not just $.

- Tony Sparano said Ronnie Brown, who caught 2 TDs in the a.m., is starting to understand the passing game much better.

- Tony Sparano said he’s impressed with new TE Ernest Wilford’s effort to in-line block. “What he does in the passing game isn’t an issue.”

Oh, and here’s a link to an article by Omar that touches on some points Edgar tweets about: http://bit.ly/vtzNF

Sorry for the long post again….I know how much it sucks not to be able to access some sites at work.

Why the new kicker?

Dan Carpenter has been nothing short of perfect throughout last season and training camp. Every time he did drills, he would put on a show for the crowd by never missing. However, a guy behind me did mention something. If Carpenter goes down, our season is over. Our team reminds me of the 2000 Ravens, winning through a stout defense and getting by through field goals. If Carpenter goes down, our season does with it. Unless, we have a quality back up that we can bring up through the practice squad. Maybe that is what the new kid is for.

Let this season BE GINN!
