Randy Starks or Phillip Merling

Lets talk positions defensive fronts to be exact. With Jason Ferguson holding up the middle, and Kendall Langford on the other side of him. So the question is Who do we start at the defensive end position, Phillip Merling or Randy Starks that is my question for u guys. If u do it by comparison Randy Starks has the better stats for the year and has allot more experience then Phillip Merling. Coming off his rookie year last year. The dolphins have high hopes for merling letting him train with the first team during OTAS, saying he looks leaner and faster off the line, but during otas you cant really tell wait until they get there pads on and then determine how a person looks or not.  Merling had a good starting rookie year, Starks has always been a consistent versatile player.

If you judge them on stats from the 2008 season alone Randy Starks looks like the man who deserves the chance to be the starter. With his 29 tackles total, 3 sacks for 13 yards lost, and one interception, compared to Merlings 26 tackles total, 1 sack for four yards lost, and one interception. The one difference in there stats is that Merling did return that int. for a touchdown which was one of the most exciting plays of last years season for the dolphins. So who should be the starter of the 2009 season?

Jason Ferguson holding up the middle and Kendall Langford holding up the other end who do we start on the other side of these guys. In my opinion I say go with the experience with Randy Starks and keep the line strong. Phillip Merling backs him up and gains more experience with time. Right now is the time were we need our line to be strong with our tough schedule and I would rather have somebody there who can produce more consistently throughout the season. Phillip Merling looks like he could be a great defensive end in the near future but right now i don't think is the time for us to be taking chances, take the sure thing and run with it.

It just so happens if Jason ferguson can't hold up the middle then we can always put Starks in there and have Merling, Starks, Langford, now im sure the d-line is going to be fine and we will be able to hold up anybodies run game. I still think our defense this year might just be ranked at the top 5, were dealing with stronger teams this year and I"m sure there working out ways to stuff every teams offense strikes.

Now if Starks legal trouble goes to crap then this entire post was a waste but to kill the time and to make things interesting lets just discuss it for now. So who would u rather start Phillip Merling or Randy Stark?

Starks is a LDE,

and he played almost exclusively on the left side last year, I’m not saying they can’t move him over, but I think they would like to leave him on the other side, I think the battle will be between Merling , Dotson and McDaniel.

mcdaniels

rarely produces, dotson is an unknown we need stability at the line, moving him over i don’t think would be a big issue

I really

hope that merling starts, but I think they should let them battle it out through training camp and the preseason

based on last year i am sure merlling will be on the field

common sence says if you put a stick in it and stirr if it stinks.. stop.. toss the stick and just walk away.

When Merling picked off the pass, he scored...

When Starks picked off his pass, he fell down.
I pick Merling, but I hope Starks overcomes his legal troubles to get a lion’s share of plays as well.
I like the size of the back-ups
Backup DL
LDE McDaniel 6-7 305
NT Soliai 6-4 335
RDE Starks 6-3 305
I hope Starks improves his play at the nose.
What I would really like to see is Starks become a dominant Nose Tackle type player.
Not sure he has it in him, but if so, the rotation would be
LDE Langford, McDaniel
NT Ferguson, Starks, Soliai/Ellis
RDE Merling, Dotson

Abandoned the Draft Sean Smith at #25 Bandwagon to Join the Draft Sean Smith at #61 Bandwagon and get Vontae Davis and a 5th Rounder. Trio > me.

we def got size up front

i think starks is gonna be out the 1st couple games though. Either way its all about rotation. We have alot of versatilty up front. BTW starks didnt just fall down he made a quick move then fell down. Merling had the INT we all dream of no one to beat but the QB.

merling should start

first off lets not judge weather a DE should start by his touchdown scoring ablility. the merling touchdown, although nice as it was may be the only touchdown he ever scores. i live in S. carolina, so i had the chance to see merling play every saturday (clemson alum). i like his seze better than starks. i think you start merling then spell him and langford with starks. the two young guys will be the future of the dolphins d-line. i dont think starks will be.

No matter

who starts i think they all get about 50% playing time. Backup NT is a good question. Hopefully Ellis comes along and pushes for the backup spot.

Cmon on man

Langford held his own…..there is a reason he started all year. Like i said before it really doesnt matter who starts. Its all about rotation….

This will be a battle in camp...

… Phillip is younger and was drafted for this… but Starks is a vet and will not go quietly. I like this battle going into camp, I’d like to see the reverse… the young guy starting and being relieved by the older vet.
