Talkin' Mike Vick and Roger Goodell (and maybe Dante Stallworth)

Hello Phinsiders,

As you all probably know, Michael Vick was reinstated today by Roger Goodell. Was this the correct move on Goodell's part? I think it was. Don't get me wrong, what Vick did was horrible and I would never want to see him play for the Dolphins. However, I think that everyone deserves a second chance, and Goodell has reinstated players who have done crimes that are equal to or worse than Vick. For one, Pac Man Jones has been arrested time after time and he was reinstated. Vick did his two years is prison, plus parole. It's all enough if you ask me.

Now to get off topic a little, Dante Stallworth was recently released from prison after killing a man with his SUV while he was drunk and high. The sad part is he was in jail for less than a month. Absolutely rediculous. He should get at least 10 years! If he's reinstated by Goodell I have no faith in our society anymore.

And that is a minute inside the head of Sam.

Comparing the Vick case to the Stallworth is apples to oranges.

One was at the federal level, the other at the state.

Also – intent is different. Vick knew what he was doing. He wanted to kill dogs and he killed dogs. He hung them. He electrocuted them. He drowned them. And he slammed them to the ground repeatedly until it was dead.

On the other hand, Stallworth drove drunk. Another disgusting act. But he did not intend to kill something or somebody. And the person he hit was jaywalking. Irresponsible act by Stallworth? Of course. But not quite as sick and psychotic as what Vick did. Vick must really have no soul or something.

Also – Vick lied right to the Commish’s face about his actions and only confessed once he was caught. He wasn’t sorry for what he did. He was sorry he got caught for doing it.

Stallworth – I believe – stopped at the scene to call 9-1-1. (If I recall correctly). He also turned him self in and didn’t try to lie to avoid getting caught. He showed real remorse. Vick did not.

That’s my 2 cents. Should they have the right to seek employment with an NFL team? Probably. But if I’m an owner, neither would ever be on my own team – that’s for sure.

then he should be punished for DUI manslaughter like he was

He was dumb to drive while drunk, just like a hell of a lot of other people do. And while he was he got caught because a dude jumped in front of his car. sucks…even if he was sober, i bet you he still would have hit him.

by Ham420 on Jul 27, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

probably

he probably still would have hit him. It is just a tragedy either way you look at it. The Vick thing just disgusts me. Completely disgusts me. Like Matty said above about Vick not having a soul, there is no way he does. I could never bring myself to do any of the things he did. But Stallworth just made a bad decision, I still think he didn’t serve enough time, but I’m not the legal system.

Vick got off easy

Look at the kid who was going around killing cats, he is probably getting 10 plus years if convicted, and vick got 2 years for killing dogs. You know our justice system is messed up when you can buy yourself out with money.

as for the Stallworth thing

it just shows how crappy our legal system is. Same with Vick’s punishment if you ask me. But they did their time and they deserve to have a job, I just see McDonald’s as more of the place for them.

With Vick, I hope he really does his part to speak out about dog fighting. He really screwed up his life and I guess he deserves to fix it.

Well idk about Stallworth

The dude jumped in front of his car…he didnt veer off and hit someone on the sidewalk…if something like that happened to me and i went to jail for ten years id be pissed. i think what he got was deserved..it was an accident. hes not a criminal. what Vick did was a crime and he knew he was doing it.

by Ham420 on Jul 27, 2009 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

(It was a Bentley, not an SUV, btw) This was hashed over at great length here about a month ago.

As I said then, Donte DID call 9-11 and waited for the police & ambulance. They guy he hit WAS jaywalking – which does not make Dante hitting him okay, it was just part of the facts that the prosecutor had to consider. He got what he got. He has expressed true remorse, I believe, from what I have read. He stood up and took it all, like a good person should.

As I said before, what Donte did was stupid. What Vick did was evil.

I will not get any burgers where Vick is serving – never know what kind of meat is in it!

yeah.

like I’ve been saying. Stallworth just made a bad decision. In my opinion thought he still should have served more than a month. Imagine if the jaywalker was your family. Thats how I look at it. But I also look at it that Stallworth acted correctly after what he did. So its a toss up.

The prosecutors might have decided that him being drunk was not much, if any, contribting factor

to the accident. I mean, if I am out driving and someone steps out in front of my car and dies, should I go to jail for something I could not stop? (I factor out the drunk part, ’cause I have been sober for 27 years, 6 months and 3 days – and yes you DO remember)

Vick

does not deserve a second chance he did his with malicious intent, he doesn’t have a soul and he deserved to rot in jail for a very long time he got off easy. Stallworth its a different story, i live in miami people down here are crazy especially around that time he had no intent on hitting anybody, it was an accident simply that an unfortunate one, but an accident all the same. He took care of the mans family and simply ask for his forgiveness and they gave it to him. He deserves his second chance.

question

i was taught when i was younger to forgive but never forget…i think thats how michael vick should be treated, he spent two years in jail did not complain did his time and now hes out and deserves a second chance. did any of you people think that maybe he was scared and denied it to everyone because of this, yes when he was caught he admitted and thats wrong he should have owned up to his actions but once again i bet he was very scared of real jail time and the fact that he was letting everyone down. maybe i just see the good in everyone but i would give him a second chance. its okay for leonard little to play and have his fans love him, but no one can support vick? yes what he did was wrong but like i said he did his time didnt complain came back talk to the commishiner like a man and now deserves an oppurtunity at work just like the rest of us.

First of all Vick did his time and so did Dante and as the Bentley that Dante was in, its not an SUV sir…. But your an expert im assuming in details considering that you only mentioned 3 of the many players to get in legal trouble… How about Burress, Harrison, Matt Jones, and the list is endless…. Even if someone signs Vick do you know the raucus that its going to cause in that city… No matter what he does he will always be known as the Dog Slayer…

What about intent?

Everyone seems to set aside the fact that Dante didn’t mean to kill anyone. Based on the facts his tragedy appeared to be more about wrong place wrong time… Sure driving high and drunk is not to be condoned, but many MANY of us are guilty of “just getting home” from an honest night of having some fun. I beleive Dante should have been punished more and more in line with what I’ve seen the average Joe get for instances.

Now Vick, he knowingly slaughtered dogs. Whether he physically did it or not, he signed the checks and he participating in many ways. I have a reall hard time buying into that “he knows not what he does” because dog fighting was as accepted in his community as bike riding. Vick may have committed a crime “withot realizing its severity” but any callous disregard for cruelty of an intelligent loving and domesticated animal is borderline insanity.

IMO Dante should have served more jailtime and Vick did his punishment. Certain occupations will ban you for life, but football is entertainment and it’s not the same as being a truck driver or doctor. Football players are not role models and people who subscribe to that are doomed parents. Let him play, let him learn, and God have mercy on his soul should he ever find himself near me and my dog.

Too many people talk about how they were brought up or what they were brought up around

as a “reason” why they do the shit they do.

Its an excuse. If its legal it is done in view of the public. If its illegal it is done in hideaways etc. In this country you don’t go to church in someone’s basement with a lookout to warn of approaching gestapo. Football is not played in a clearing deep in the woods. Gambling is done in Vegas, Atlantic City and on Indian reservations. And so on.

Vick would have had to be an absolute moron not to know it was illegal, unethical and morally repugnant. AND could cost him his job and freedom.

So I guess what you are saying is that he is “trailer trash” of the worst possible kind!
