Dolphins Off-Season Report Card

Following an AFC East championship and arguably one of the most memorable seasons in franchise history the Dolphins still had many areas that needed improvement headed into the off-season. They did have a great year and all Dolphin fans should be very proud of the turnaround, but they benefited from several factors. First of all, to be honest, they most likely would not even have had the opportunity to compete for the division if Tom Brady didn't go down in week one. Secondly, they enjoyed a very easy schedule. They played the AFC and NFC West divisions which are arguably the two worst divisions in the league. The schedule thing might not be as big of deal if it were not for the fact that they struggled to pull out wins against teams that most playoff bound clubs blew out, like the Seahawks, Rams, Raiders, Chiefs, and 49ers. Yeah, a win is a win, but it does show there is vast room for improvement. Some of the main areas that needed improvement headed into the off-season were as follows:
1. Secondary: The pass defense was the biggest weakness of the Dolphins all season long. The unit ranked 25th in pass yardage surrendered and was torn apart on several occasions by, Matt Schaubb, Tyler Thigpen, and Matt Cassel.
2. Wide-Receiver: Though second year wide out Ted Ginn Jr. finally showed some promise, veteran Greg Camarrillo continued to over-achieve, and undrafted rookie free agent Davone Bess emerged into a solid starter they seriously lacked a go to threat or a red-zone target.
3. Offensive-Line: This group had a pretty good year but, the running game lacked the ability to run the ball effectively out of base formations.
4. Nose-Tackle: Jason Ferguson had a solid 2008 campaign, but the only problem is he is'nt getting any younger. Ferguson is now 34 and the Dolphins needed to add some youth to the position.
So, Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and staff had some work to do this season to continue the turnaround of one of the most storied franchises in league history. They did not make a huge splash in free agency, as far as any big name signings, but they did make some very solid moves. They re-signed linebacker Channing Crowder, safety Yeremiah Bell, and offensive tackle Vernon Carey. All three played a huge role in winning the AFC East and Channing Crowder led the team in tackles. They also, signed gaurd Joe Berger, center Jake Grove, outside inebacker Cameron Wake, free safety Gibril Wilson, safety Ethan Kilmer, cornerback Eric Green, and welcomed back outside linebacker Jason Taylor. The Dolphins clearly improved their offensive line with the pickups of Grove and Berger which shoud impove the running game this season. The secondary was clearly starting to be rebuilt with the free-agent signings but, the Dolphins were waiting for the draft to find the future of the defensive backfield. The signing of Jason Taylor was a suprise for a lot of people but, really the Dolphins had nothing to lose. He wanted back in Miami so the Dolphins got him for pretty cheap. Sure, he is up there in age but, he is just two years removed from the Defensive MVP season and him and Joey Porter together have the potential to cause all kinds of havoc for quarterbacks this season. After a solid free agency the Dolphins had a somewaht controversal draft.
Dolphins Draft:
Round 1: CB Vontae Davis, Ilinois
Round 2: QB Pat White, West Virginia
Round 2: CB Sean Smith, Utah
Round 3: WR Patrick Turner, USC
Round 4: WR Brian Hartline, Ohio State
Round 5: TE John Nalbone, Monmouth
Round 5: FS Chris Clemons, Clemson
Round 6: OT Andrew Gardner, Georgia Tech
Round 7: LB J.D. Folsom, Weber State
So, the Dolphins defenately answered there need at corner with Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. Vontae Davis is a very strong, physical corner who might be the shutdown guy Miami is looking for and Sean Smith was the tallest corner in the draft who should match up well against some of the tall, lengthy recievers of the AFC East. The suprise pick, Pat White, who no one really expected to go to the Dolphins with Chad Henne being picked up in the second round last year. But, White is the dream prototype to run the wildcat. The dissapointing thing about this years draft however, is that they did not pick up a go-to reciever. Patrick Turner and Brian Hartine could be soid players but Miami aready has solid, with Ginn, Camarrillo, and Bess. The only positive is that Turner could develope into a potent red-zone target with him being 6-5. However, at the end of the day no one really knows how these kids will translate into the pros so it really is an inexact science. After the draft and free agency the Dolphins did address some of thier needs but will have to count on guys like Ted Ginn or Devone Bess to emerge into a number one reciever if the offense can go to the next level.
Off-Season Grade: B

good stuff bro, but dont you think B is a little low though? i feel like now there is not that one position that we have truely no depth or skill

Secondary is now revamped and ready to rock a roll
and on offense we definetly add a lot more explosion

i would say its more of a B+ to A-

I believe in John Beck and that Cbdolphin is the man. I'll make you proud LCFF

Interesting analysis

I think you missed the defence not really lasting the season as a whole. Yep Ferguson isn’t getting any younger, but alot of people seemed to take their foot off the gas towards the end of the season, if you note that it was only in the red zone, when the defence really turned on and stopped them scoring. Which in turn was major factor in creating problems against the “weaker” teams.
As has been said before I think that the depth on the Defensive Line could be a problem especially at NT unless somebody steps up. I think the OLB corps though has been sorted as well as the secondary. I think the problems with the secondary meant that we were a Red Zone defence because nobody could go long on us.
I’ll stick with B+ but a revision to a B if the Defensive Line isn’t sorted.

I like the article bro but i disagree with one point

you said…

First of all, to be honest, they most likely would not even have had the opportunity to compete for the division if Tom Brady didn’t go down in week one.

I don’t neccesarily agree with that. They beat us once and we beat them once. We totally outplayed them in NE. It wasn’t even close. They had no answer for our rushing offense and our defensive pressure. Do you honestly think that if Brady was in they would have won that game?

The other game we couldn’t stop their aerial attack even with Cassel. Maybe the Pats would have won more games with Brady… but we still would have played the same, and finished at 11-5 regardless.

also, they went 11-5

Thats stil a good team we beat its not like they were 6-10. If anything the Pats were lucky that Matt Cassel panned out.

you say there was a lot of hole's filled it seame's also there might be a bit of work left!

is it safe to asume that with all the picks of defensive nose tackle’s that the patriots used they will be letting some go & we can pick up a few for our practic squad

Ugh

Okay, first and foremost, this is a good article and I don’t want to suggest that it isn’t. Well thought out and written…

Now here is my gripe(s)

Someone else addressed the Tom Brady issue. Look, Brady is a great QB and to deny that is a falsification of fact. That said, however, Brady does not dictate how the league shakes out. He has no bearing on any other team than his own. When the Pats lose, it is not because Brady didn’t play well…it is because the team that beat them played better, pure and simple. I know the media would have the casual fan believe that a Brady injury changes everything, but, in fact, it changes nothing. Best example of this: New York Giants. In a game that meant everything, they beat the supposedly “invincible” Pats. All it took was a superior effort and gameplan, which, ALL NFL teams should be putting forth week in and week out.

My other gripe – the easy schedule thing. Miami doesn’t make the schedule and should not have to constantly apologize for it when they win. They play professional football teams like everyone else…in fact, their schedule was not much more varied than anyone else in the AFC East. The truth is, coming into last season, most people chalked their Miami games up to a likely win. 11 times, they walked away disappointed. If you want to harp on the easy schedule. harp on the three AFC East teams – Buffalo, New York Jest and New England – that failed to make the playoffs despite and easier slate of teams to compete against. Miami simply did what they should have…that said, while it would have been nice to see them handle those “easier” teams with higher scoring, Miami just did what it took to win those games. I agree that they should evaluate and improve and find ways to win better during the off season (otherwise they’d be fools who rest on their laurels), and therefore I find your post to be accurate, but these two points are simply “excuses” teams and media make when a team like Miami eludes their talent or prognosticating abilities. Miami found a way to win…neither Brady nor the schedule makers had anything to do with that. That was all heart, talent and effort. Don’t hamper your posts by swallowing the media load. We don’t need to make excuses for winning.

I give Miami a solid A, maybe A-. There’s competition in the reciever corps now – and depth. There’s a secondary with promise. I like the improvements too.

I have to disagree with one thing
He has no bearing on any other team than his own. When the Pats lose, it is not because Brady didn’t play well…it is because the team that beat them played better, pure and simple.

When Brady, or any QB, goes down it effects every team in their div., and every team that has to play them, and if they are a good team, it can effect every team that is in a playoff race, to say that Brady, or any other QB, doesn’t have an effect on any other team, or winning and losing, is saying that talent means nothing, and as we all know that is simply not true, I agree with your other point though.

In a sense...

A catastrophic injury to a player at a caliber of Brady’s may affect the outcome of a few scores, which in the long run may alter standings. I could see that. It also may have no affect whatsoever. What I mentioned before though, is that I don’t think it would have affected our record last year. They could have had ANYBODY at QB week 3, and we would have won that game. And they didn’t need Brady to out-attack us at home last year. So I don’t believe that the Brady injury affected our record last year, and our ability to beat the teams we should have allowed us to play in the wildcard, while the Pats and Jets sat out.

All true

except if they had won more games, we would not have gone to the playoffs, the only way we could get in last year was to win the div., if they had one more win, we would have been out of the playoffs, so Brady’s injury may have put us in the playoffs, and if Penne went down last year, the Pats are probably in the playoffs.

I agree that it would not have changed our record last year, but it still in all probability changed our fortunes.

Or...

..just being realistic here – there is no way to prove or disprove this argument since there are too many variables and what-if scenarios.

But by the same logic, who is to say that Brady and the Pats would have had a better season with him healthy? Normally, when a leader goes down, the rest of the team has to step up and play above themselves to compensate. Perhaps Brady getting hurt actually made the Pats BETTER last year than they otherwise would have been?

Regardless…Miami still had to win their games and owe nothing to NE. Just as much as Pittsburgh isn’t going to thank NE for not making the playoffs last year. Yes, NE is a great team and to deny that is futile, but that doesn’t mean they are guaranteed Superbowls and regular season wins simply because Brady is at the helm.

Do you really think this
Perhaps Brady getting hurt actually made the Pats BETTER last year than they otherwise would have been?

Seriously???

by uncle finster on Jul 6, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, why not?

The Pats “seem” to feel entitled to AFCE title, so when their star player goes down they get off their complacency stools!

It does make sense to me.

At least their fans and the media feel like they are entitled to AFCE title honors without playing any games yet!

by PhinsTifosi on Jul 6, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey, we're just batting around "what-if's"

How many teams reach the Superbowl only to suffer setbacks the next year? If NE was playing to chamionship form week one last year, Brady wouldn’t have gotten hurt. Who is to say that his going down didn’t help the team play better football all season long?

I’m not declaring this as fact, i’m just saying this is a possibility in a sea of possibilities. There’s just no knowing…and getting back to the original point, saying that Miami got a lucky break and help from Brady’s injury is making the same exact stretch – only making that stretch in a way that compliments NE needlessly.

It’s really just me. I don’t concede anything to the Pats. Nobody should. If we did that, we may as well go ahead and declare them division winners before the season starts.

I answer to both you guys

have you been paying attention, lol, the Pats have been the best team in the league since 2000!!!, they were coming off an undefeated season, lolol, IDK, if you don’t respect your most dangerous enemies, your head will be on a spike by night fall, and they have earned that respect, and Brady is no small part of it.

by uncle finster on Jul 6, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay, here is a classic example

You say: “The Pats have been the best team in the league since 2000!!!”

Superbowl champion in the year 2000? St Louis. 2001? Baltimore. Now, the Pats won in 2002. Now had you said to me that the Pats have been the best team in the league since 2002? Here would have been my reply: Nuh Uh.

Pats won it in 2004 and 2005. They were the best team in the league 3 times since 2000. They were the best team in the AFC 4 times since 2000. The Pats havent won a Superbowl in the last 4 Superbowls. In fact, Pittsburgh has gone twice and won both times in those 4 years and the Pats have gone once and lost.

Respect your enemy? Absolutely I do – but I don’t kneel down and slobber on them…if anything, the STEELERS are the best team in the league until proven otherwise and have earned that respect. So my question back to you is this: Have YOU been paying attention?

By the way – I don’t personally play the Pats, so I don’t really have to respect them :) I think they suck!!! They also cheated during those Superbowl years!!

If you wanna talk QBs we can toss out the Manning brothers as a reference who have done more in championships than has Brady the last few years?

My point was never that the “Pats suck.” It’s simply that you don’t know how things WOULD HAVE shaken out….Miami is the East champ. I say, to the original poster – give them their due and lets not excuse away the accomplishment.

P.S. – Screw the stupid Pats anyways! Brady’s a gimp. I hope they go 3-13 this year. Likely? Maybe not…but then the future isn’t written, is it?

LOL :)

Patriots won the SB in 01, 03 and 04

Since 01 they are 97-31 in the regular season and 14-3 in the playoffs and 3-1 in SBs, please show me the team that beats that, that is why they are the best team in the league since then.

PS; my error, I meant since 01 not 00.

Okay -You got me

If you want to be technical, it was the 01, 03 and 04 SEASONS that the Pats won their Superbowls. I mentioned the actual year in which they won said bowls.

That said, us being Dolphins fans and this being a Dolphins site – lets not engage in Patriots greatness discussion. All that does is make us no better than the media or anyone else who annoints the Pats champs before they’ve even proven anything this season.Lets just agree to disagree on that one point and leave it at that.

Mikem - I was absolutely agreeing with you!

I just wanted to point out that the media has already crowned the Pats the AFCE champ for 09. (As have their fans.)

Was Ronnie Brown as good last year after knee injury? Will Brady? Brady WILL have to prove he is all the way back.

I respect the Pats as our most dangerous foe, (unlike the JJJJJJJets), but we do NOT need to kowtow to them. We only need to play against them the best we can and make them beat us if they will.

Respect does not mean I have to like them or their fans.

by PhinsTifosi on Jul 6, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I appreciate that they are our greatest foe

but Miami has a lot of foes to appreciate this season beyond just them.

Truthfully, with the recievers and offense around brady, I suspect that he’ll do well this year. I’m not sure what the Pats did for their O-Line this off season, but with teams likely to tee off on Brady more than ever before, it better have been substantial. Remember, the pressure NY put on him in the Superbowl (they really made the Pats O-Line look old and tired), and now the injury recovery – being able to pressure Brady is going to be a key to Miami’s games against them this season.

and I fully agree, respect does not mean that we have to like them :)
