Pat White will get his chance before Henne.

We are all eagerly anticipating the Miami Dolphins 09' version of the Wild Cat implementing none other than Pat White.  I'm sure you have played all the scenarios through your head since the Dolphins drafted him as I have.  But one I think most people have not thought about and we can only hope most of our opposition will not realize at first is this.....

"Dolphins go to their wild cat formation, White, Brown and Williams in the backfield.  White fields the snap and drops back.... surveys the field and makes a nice pass to Camarillo for a 15 yd gain!  I don't think the Jets were expecting that folks"

That will be the reason, I feel, we will see Pat White eventually the starter for the Miami Dolphins.  As they use him in what seems to be a trick play.  It will just simply be Pat White playing QB.  If he is to find any early success in this, I see Pat White, not Chad Henne, as our starting QB by 2010.

Love to hear any ones thoughts on this theory.

So, every play is a potential wildcat play?

aka the Pat White show?
Wouldn’t last a season. He’d get battered.
His success in college isn’t going to carry over against pro defenses.

I agree 100% as well.

The FO was not planning on drafting this guy.. I do not think. But when the chance poped up they jumped at it hoping it pans out. Im sorry if I sound racists in this comment but there has not been any black QB’s who have made the transition to the NFL and played as well as the top QB’s in this league. Do not get me wrong, Im not saying a black guy cannot be a great QB but from high school on if a black kid can throw OK and run good they try to make him a QB. If he makes it he will usualy end up with a “run first” mindset. This causes them to not learn the passing game as well as qb’s who cannot run as well. (white kids) So the HS and colleges use these better running black kids as QB’s because the defense at that level is easier for them to run first. In the NFL none of these guys end up being top rated passers because all their lives they have been told that what they were doing in HS and college was the way to win. It is not the way to win in the NFL. No do not get me wrong, having a great passer who could also run really good would be a great asset, however these kids have been trained to “run first” then if there is no hole pass the ball.

From what I have seen in videos of White he has that same mentality. Unless he is a better “passing qb” then Henne he will not start. And I do not see this happening any time soon.

McNabb?

I think he’s played as well as the “top QB’s in this league.”

Steve McNair? NFL MVP, possible Hall of Famer. He’s another.

So I’m not buying this at all.

He seems to be describing Mike Vick

Not McNabb or McNair, who were much more likely to sit in the pocket, and then make plays with their feet if the situation fell apart. Both were good quarterbacks, though McNair always seemed to be tougher (living in Tennessee, he was referred to as Iron Man McNair).

he is in the HoF, and is arguably the closest thing to Dan Marino, cuz he was doing it back then as well, before the rule changes/reinforcing.

Why is it always you who brings up the color of a guys skin, here's your last racist remark,
Oh please..
Do you really think Bess is a better wr then Cam? If Cam didnt get injured he would have been the leading receiver last year beating Ginn by at least 200 yards. Why all the white receiver haters around here? Cam is no good.. Hartline doesnt stand a chance ect ect.. Does anyone remember that lil white guy named Welker that no teams would give a "real" look at b4 Miami groomed him? Just cus your white does not mean you cannot be a great receiver in the NFL.

by MainePhinFan on Jul 7, 2009 10:40 PM EDT

The rest of us just look at them as players, you on the other hand look at them as white and black players, your proving that, your point about run first QBs is valid, but it doesn’t matter if their white, black, brown, yellow or red, IMO these comments make this place feel unclean, and I’d really wish you would stop.

white will get time thru the wildcat, but that wont make him a starter. Think about it like this this… if henne was one year younger and was drafted with this class, he would be #1 QB. we got him for a reason, as well as why we got pat white. Both could ptentially be the best steals if the duo is used correctly in the future, once the glorious CP10 days are over.
But as for now, CP10 is starter, then henne. Yes, pat white will get his chance before henne thru the wildcat… but henne is the future.

I also agree with el presidente 00

I think that Pat White will get more playing time this year due to the wildcat, special teams, some play at WR, and QB during mop up duty.
But that doesn’t necessarily make him the future. It will take time for him to learn the plays and read defenses. As much time or more than Henne, and Henne has had four years in college and a year in the pros for a headstart.
Now I wouldn’t mind seeing Henne AND White in some packages together to allow both of them some playing time while the opposing defense is scratching their heads trying to figure out how Ronnie or Ricky slipped by them for an 80 yard TD run…

I'm thinking no

I see White turning into a receiver over the next couple of years. Henne is definately the future. If CP struggles even a little bit I see him getting pulled. I don’t think he will though. And Henne is watching and learning. I see CP taking us to 12-4 and very deep into the playoffs this year.

-.-

i think we will probably use pat white as receiver for a few plays to get the opposing defense comfortable. then when we need it penny and white switch: we now have the wildpat. this way the defense wont be able to react to bringing white in.
how pat white plays in the oppurtunities given is what will determine if he will get a chance to be the starter. at worst he will be a wr that is a big play waiting to happen.
if penny does go down i can almost guarantee that henne will go in as the starter and we still use white in the wildcat/wildpat.

Interesting to see how Atlanta responds if Pat White is QB for the first play of the game with 2 WRs/2 TEs and Ronnie in the backfield. If they pull up the safety for run support, let it fly to Ginn deep.

Hold Up

This Pat White thing is starting to bother me. The entirety of the “surprise” that Pat will bring to the Wildcat is predicated on the fact that teams must honor the formation, not the QB.

The Wildcat becomes a spread shotgun with him taking the snap, but teams must be wary of the overloaded line formations and the run first. He might have success passing out of the formation because of this.

Chad Henne on the other hand is a prototypical NFL quarterback with above average arm strength and accuracy. Listening to Pat White in an interview and then listen to one of Chad from his rookie season.

Chad has the nards. Not Pat. The pro set, with some flourishes from the wildcat will win a championship. No one is winning a superbowl with a scrambling QB in the modern era.

The Wildcat will always run into problems when confronting elite 3-4 defenses.

If the Dolphins cannot run out of a pro set then they will never be able to beat athletic 3-4 teams like the Ravens or Steelers. Not ever.

I disagree that nobody is going to win with a scrambling QB.

Mostly on the grounds that you should never speak in absolutes and partly on the grounds that if there were a QB who could, it’s probably Pat White. I don’t care who you are, his college numbers were amazing. I realize this is the NFL and not NCAA, but what are we predicating Henne’s eventual success on? Henne’s college stats. How is it fair to not give Pat White the same kind of credit?

Driver of the Trade-Ronnie-Brown Bandwagon.

by joel311 on Jul 20, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because guys of his ilk have never been that successful,

but I agree that you can never say never, but history is on the other side, Henne is without a doubt a more prototypical NFL QB, so it’s not fair to compare them as if all things are equal, because they are not, this is not to say that White can’t become a better QB then Henne, but he is in the mold of QBs that have achieved in the NFL and White follows in a path of failed QB experiments.

The last few NCAA all time rushing QBs are currently in the NFL, but they are all WRs or STers, If White succeeds he will be breaking the mold, he will blaze a new path, but those are what they call the long odds, so anybody who doesn’t believe in White is just following the tried and true path, again this does not mean he can’t be successful, be he will have to succeed where every one else has failed.

by uncle finster on Jul 20, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok, No Absolutes

I was dismayed by the White pick. Then I became very excited after watching his highlights. He’s Mike Vick (minus some raw physical traits) but without all the baggage.

He might even be a better passer (from an accuracy point – I know White has an arm, but Vick had a freaking cannon).

I will say it again though: Pat White will be listed at a different position come game time.

I will also say again that I believe in the hype around Henne. Parcells notoriously does not trust his quarterbacks and he felt Henne was mature enough to assist in the scouting process. That says a lot to me.

Long short: White will practice like a QB and another position. He will play listed as a WR or HB.

Call me out on it later if I’m wrong.
