And Now, a Few Words from an Old School Fins Fan

One Sunday afternoon on Long Island, NY, my father and I was watching a Jets game on NBC. The year? 1970. The opponent? The Miami Dolphins, who I knew nothing about except they had players with funny names like Griese, Kiick, and Csonka. If I remember correctly, the Fins were winning, but since the Jets had Namath you couldn't take anything for granted. Suddenly, Griese threw a long pass, real pretty...to Paul Warfield.

"Paul Warfield is on the Dolphins?" I said to no one in particular. "I love Paul Warfield!" You see, my dad was a Giants fan and in NFL games before the merger I saw quite a bit of Warfield on TV. He was my favorite NFL player.

Shortly thereafter the TV guy showed the Miami coach and said, "Yadda yadds Don Shula yadda yadda."

"Don Shula coaches the Dolphins? I thought he coached the Colts?"

Well almost immediately I got my dad's copy of Sports Illustrated for their NFL preview, turned to the AFC East page and it said, after mentioning the Jets and Colts, "...and Don Shula has his Dolphins jumping through hoops." Nick Buoniconti, eh? I thought. I knew this guy was one of the AFL's best middle linebackers, from the Patriots, and had seen him play in a Pats-Jets game once.

The Dolphins beat the Jets, and I got real interested. I had rooted for the Vikings--I had never considered rooting for any AFL team, at least until the Jets won Super Bowl III--since 1968. They had Joe Kapp, who was a real screwball thrower with moxie, and the Purple People Eaters, and Bud Grant. At that time I was also interested in Viking myths. But then Kapp left the team on the heals of losing to the Chiefs in Supe IV. I was looking for a new team.

And in the Dolphins I found one. They won their last six games and made the playoffs in only their fifth year of existence.

After going through the Super Bowl years, the fall from grace, the rebuilding, retaking elite status but not winning the Super Bowl, slouching back toward mediocrity, the last years of Marino--which I didn't get to see since being married and living out in rural far west Texas we had no TV until we got satellite in 1998--Shula's retirement and then Marino's--missing a pretty good period with Jimmy Johnson and then early Wannstedt, and getting back into it after the Pats won the "9-11" Super Bowl, almost appropriately, and our son wanting now to watch football--he was early teens then--I finally started to get interested in the Fins again. Right when things started going wrong, 2004-2005.

But I lived through that and I lived through 2007, when things could not have been worse for a Fins fan who had seen the glory. Not only the 1-15, but bitter hated rival NE was undefeated! These guys could be seen as even better than the 1972 Fins if they go 19-0. but my late Dad's team took care of that one for me!

So joy of joys, the Dolphins accomplish the greatest single season turnaround in NFL history by going 11-5 and making the playoffs, because 1) they cleaned house (learn a lesson, Detroit!) 2) the Trifecta is rebuilding from the inside out 3) they finally had a damned good draft after four or five lousy ones 4) they got Chad Pennington (thank you, Jets!).

But some Fins fans are STILL whining! Chad P was fine, but he's got a noodle arm so lets bring in Henne, they say. And then there are the Ted Ginn haters. GET OVER IT! IT IS NOT HIS FAULT A BAD HC DRAFTED HIM NUMBER 9! And then there are those who say Akin Ayodele sucks and Crowder almost sucks. If Ayodele is so bad then why did he start on the Cowboys, who don't let sucky players start? If Crowder is so bad then why were we all wishing he'd come back in during that Chiefs game he missed due to injury? Further, it is not Penne's fault his shoulder got hurt a few times and now he can't throw like he did before. And some of you want Ronnie Brown traded? Are you folks nuts?

Some of you are beginning to sound like Jets fans. Jets fans will be perhaps eternally disappointed because the Jets have been trying to get the next Joe Namath for about 40 years and they haven't done that, so Jets fans everywhere are still hoping, and that Sanchez is the reincarnation of Namath. They'll be disappointed again I'm sure, even if Sanchez is a good QB:  they'll find something to complain about! And some Dol-fans are just as bad, wanting Henne to play because "he's the next Marino." Oh, really? How would you know? Because he's got better arm strength than Pennington?

Well, when Henne can win 11 games when he was on another team less than a month before a new season starts, let me know. I appreciate that Henne got the Fins a late TD vs. the Cards, but please, guys, you ain't convincing me.

So, Henne is "the next Marino," in some minds. Well, if we are going to play that game, let me answer by saying this: Chad Pennington is no where's near the next Marino. But you know something? In so many ways (again, with not quite the arm strength), Pennington IS THE NEXT GRIESE!

And which QB, Marino or Griese, won a Super Bowl? So don't tell me you want the "next Marino"!

Now, Ted Ginn will never be the next Warfield. But neither is Randy Moss, TO, Roddy White, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Andre Johnson or Donald Driver. Warfield was perhaps the most gifted reciever to ever play this game, who could play it great regardless of who was throwing it. (Who was Cleveland's QB in his time there, anyway?) But those of you who diss Teddy also say that when Henne gets to be the QB Ginn will do great. You all just don't understand that Ginn Jr.'s best thing is that he can run like hell after the catch and did some really cool things last year (remember how he faked out two Jets defenders by staying back to catch that 30 some-odd yard pass, and the defenders got ahead of him? Never mind that 176 yard Bills game!) And I agree that Miami does not have an elite reciever corp. In 2008. who know what will happen in 2009? I say Teddy had a damned good year.

Crowder will be fine. Don't you know his bit with Rex Ryan was a motivator for himself? Ayodele? Guys, we could do worse! I saw nothing wrong with his play last year. Why is it some folks think the Dolphins have to have the best team on paper? Guy, they don't play on paper! As for the secondary, some of the folks who say "we" got one helluva safety duo in Wilson and Bell also complain "we" don't have a similar CB duo. Boo hoo! Jason Allen is a bust. Who's fault is that? (I'd say the Dolphins, who keep on switching this guy. does anyone really wonder why Allen is not the world's greatest CB? Safety?) Boo hoo Eric Green is a waste. So what? No player is a waste until he proves he is! Boo hoo they'll have to start a rookie. So what? Miami started two rookie linemen last year. Long and Langford played great and made the All-Rookie team. And Merling starts this year. Are you folks saying either Vontae Davis or Sean Smith just won't be good enough? How do you know? And, oh yeah, boo hoo, Jason Ferguson is old and we have no replacement. Maybe he isn't as old as we think he is, and maybe they will have a replacement this year, and if not then next year. Boo hoo Randy Starks is going to jail. Let's wait and see on that one. I bet he won't, and maybe there really is some justice left in this country.

And let me finish up here. I don't want to see any more complaints about Grove and Smiley and Thomas and their injuries. Guys, this ain't last year. Some say Cam Wake is a bust already because CFL guys can't play in the NFL. Tell that one to Joe Theissmann (or the survivors of David Overstreet). Trade Fasano, because "we" got Haynos, Martin, and now Nalbone. You're joking, right? Fasano is already being compared to one of the great TEs, Mark Bavaro. So Fasano (and Bavaro) aren't Tony Gonzales (or Kellen Winslow, Sr. of the Chargers). He (they) don't need to be Gonzales, or Witten, or Dallas Clark or any of those guys.

I'm not saying the Fins will win the Super Bowl this year (but they WILL win the Super Bowl within the next few years), and I'm not saying even that they will win the division this year, or that their won't be perhaps a setback or two. Anything can happen.

All I'm saying is this: until there is something to complain about, stop complaining. Until you have seen a dynasty-on-the-make fall flat in Oakland or anywhere else, and been through the heart ache of losing three fine players to a rival league, and been through a rebuilding project that might not have had to be, then you really don't know what a heart ache is for your beloved team. Compared to that, 2007 was a day at the beach.

Damn, you started out all warm & fuzzy, the SLAM!

Go on throw down. I’m inclined to agree with you. too much (off season nervous on paper stats) chatter. I’m still waiting for some local Phinsider to go to camp and report on the vibe, the gellin’, & the ‘tude. That’s how great teams shine.

Larry Little and I both wore 66 in our football careers. I think that means something.

LOL, LOL, LOL, get your adverbs here!

BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It aint how great you look on paper, it is how the team plays together!

I too want the second coming of Griese, not Marino, and CP10 is the closest we have!

What does it take to win the SB? Stout defense, ball running ability, low turnover ratio, the entire team believing that they can do it together AS a team.

Undefeated had 3 big time runners – Kiick, Morris & Zonk. We now have 3 with Ronnie Brown, RunRickyRun and Polite.

We have JP, JT and Wake – 3 big time pass rushers – to pressure opposing QBs.

CP10 has a very low INT rate.

After JT’s statement about running through brick walls, I think it shows that the TEAM believes in themselves as a TEAM!

And an FO that obviously believes in the team they have!

What is not there are a bunch of friggin prima donnas who think that they are the cat’s meow and that they wouldn’t have had the turn around last year without them!

I bet that if JT had stayed last year we would have won 2 more games, just because of giving JP some relief. But he is NOT a prima donna! (He turned down $8.5 mil from the foreskins to play for $1.5 mil for the Phins).

Bolden would have cost a LOT of $. And he IS a prima donna. Will he give some of his $ back if he has a sucky year? Yeah, right!

I am tired of the people who want this FO to get a big bunch of prima donnas “so we can win.” I personally believe that the FO is doing it all right! IMHO

Extraordinarily well said Snorky!

i don't know why

anyone would want to trade brown or fasano. fasano just seemed to make play after play last year. as far as wanting to trade brown, that’s just stupid people being themselves. good write up. next time, don’t hold back. lol

good post

But I disagree. We don’t have to be in agreement with everything the team does. This site would be very boring if all we did during the offseason was wave our Dolphin pom-poms.

While I don’t like complaining, I do enjoy when us fans come up with logical, well thought-out concerns or arguments thay go against the grain.

After all – if we’re all just going to sit here and agree on everything, I guess there’s no point for this site anymore, right?

ROFLMAO - so true Matty

I just get tired of people not showing respect for a player who has performed his best. (CP10 as a case in point)

Besides I don’t think you’ll see a lot of pom pom waving until the cheerleaders are on the sidelines anyway!

I just read a post on Pats Pulpit from a deranged Dolts fan that was just hilarious, but it did have some interesting points.

He wrote that the Dolts page reflected 113 posts to the articles written by your counterparts there and that the Pats had 8. I counted the ones here and there were 346

He talked about 64 hours between articles being posted at the Dolts and Pats sites. Here it is far less than 24 hours.

I glanced at the # of posts to fanposts at the Pats. One was closed with 66 posts. I have seen over 300 in less than a day here.

I suspect that if someone did a comparison, Phinsider would possibly be at or near the top of the most active ones! And that is directly attributable to the quality of the articles and member fans.

Also I do greatly appreciate the insight and thoughts of others here.

for example the comparo between 72 team and 09 team. They are quite similar.

Thanks for the great comments!

I call it the way I see it. Someone posted about FOX sports saying Miami had the #29 receiver unit and whined that Ted Ginn will never be a number 1 receiver. That did it! That, plus complaining Gin couldn’t be good because of Chad P’s noodle arm and whining for Henne! Folks are entitled to their opinion, but the whining here is getting to me. Hopefully the whiners are newer fans who didn’t live through the dynasty-that-almost-was and the mid 70s fall of the team. I just don’t think folks realize just how similar this team is to the early 70s teams, with a similar clean house regime type.

PLus, folks here need to stop taking so seriously what sports pundits from NFL Network to ESPN to FOX sports and the rest say, which is to say Miami isn’t good enough. If not this year, then within the next year or two.

Matty, I am usually too busy to wave any pom poms (and I worship Jesus, not the Dolphins!), but when someone posts such negativity to say Ted Ginn will never be good, I just have to reply…and to all the other negatives that come from viewing th epundits on NFL Network, ESPN, FOX Sports and the rest.

This team has so many similarities with those great 70s teams, from the complete house cleaning to the Griese-Pennington similarity, that I just have a feeling this team is going to be at least as good as those teams were.

I also don't understand why people make such a big deal about Ginn.

Sure he might not be the best, but just appreicate what he HAS done for us. Like the first play of the butt-freezing KC game. That was amazing no Ginn-hater can deny.

Ur absoulutely right.

Some people just can’t enjoy and appreciate the great season we’ve had and instead they want to go around whining about new problems. God, that is so true.

One thing though. Why not a new Marino?! Your judging Marino just because he dosent have a ring on his finger? I was a little baffled when I read that.

Otherwise that was an amazing post.

Compared to that, 2007 was a day at the beach.

I was around for all the stuff you mentioned, but 2007 was the lowest point in my fanlife, and 2nd place isn’t even in the rear view mirror, easily the worst by far for me, nothing even compares to it, IMO.

Well, you know the old saying . . .

It is darkest just before dawn.

2007 caused the FO changes, now we have an FO that knows how to put together a team that can/will win.

Obviously we have been looking for the 2nd coming of Shula/Griese/Marino/72 undefeated for a looooooooooooooooooooong time. I think we just might have it now!

(Geez, a guy can dream, can’t he?)

I love your post snorky!

you and I have been following the Fins about the same length of time. I remember the glory years, and suffered through the recent debacle. I, too, remember losing Zonk, Kiick, and Warfield to the WFL.
And I also remember that Griese was not a powerful QB; as a matter of fact, Pennington may actually be better. CP’s season last year was arguably better than any single season of Griese’s in terms of numbers. People tend to forget that it was Earl Morrall played most of the 14 game, 1972 season, leading the Fins to 9 wins after Griese’s injury in game 5.

Those Dolphins won on a strong power running game, and an accurate passing game. hmmm….. i wonder if these Dolphins can do the same?

Rec’d!

that is almost irrelevant =)

you are talking about a matter of degrees, not orders of magnitude, and not about a facet of the game that was all that substantial. Griese was certainly no Cunningham!

IMO anyway… i could be wrong.

and he (griese & cunningham & marino & penne & even henne)

didn’t get caught fighting dogs like vick. Vick could scramble – but obviously not well enough – he got caught big time. they took that sack to the “big house”!

Don’t have to worry about Qb scrambling if the O-line is doing its job!

These are exerpt's from an old article on B Griese
Bob Griese has a reputation as one of the most nimble quarterbacks in pro football. A Big Ten basketball player at Purdue when he wasn’t busy leading the Boilermakers to the Rose Bowl, Griese at times has seemed too bouncy for his own good at Miami.

Because of his agility and quick reflexes, this 6-1, 190-pounder has shown a frequent tendency to scramble when more patience may have paid off for him and the Dolphins. But now he’s 25 and a 4-year veteran and he has indicated he may mature and blossom.

“Griese is kind of hot and cold,” the scout said. “He has a very quick release but his height hurts him. He’s a good scrambler, but maybe too good for his own good. Sometimes when his primary receivers are covered, he’ll scramble before going to the secondary receiver. That’s not good, but I think he’s becoming more and more an orderly type of quarterback in that he knows what he can do best and sticks to it.”
“I think Griese is an exceptional passer,” said one veteran defensive back, “but he has a lot of work ahead of him. He’ll have to learn to stay in the pocket more. He has scrambled so much at times that he has hurt himself. He’ll have receivers open and he gets under pressure and dumps the ball. That’s not good for him, or the morale of his team.”

by uncle finster on Jul 12, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, it was easy,

like I said, he was known around the league for his scrambling ability, “Greasy Griese” and “Griese is Greasy” were terms that were used back in the day, I was young but I remember :>)
