Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

Is anyone else worried??

Whats up guys.  After reading that the dolphins have one of the latest starting training camps,   i started to notice a trend.  It seems like our coaches are going a bit softer this year.  Are we losing that hard nosed,  no excuses,  work till you drop mentality?  The first thing that made me feel this way was when OTA was cut short by two days.  I saw that and thought "Wow, thats not like coach sparano".  But i let it slide.  Then again i saw something that made me think.  Another Sparano move in which he called Ted Ginn Jr "Dominant".   To this i thought,  "Its not like coach to be buttering up any players in OTA's".  But again i took it with a grain of salt.  Now today i read that we have such a late starting training camp.  Thats officially strike three for me.  Im worried that our team is losing some of its toughness and hard nosed approach.  I know this post wont be too popular, and i know its not a great read like an uncle finster or rzayo post,  but i want your guys opinions.

First of all thanx for the mention, in the same sentence as a HOFer no less!

Those same thoughts occurred to me, so here’s my take:

The OTA’s were cut short because of the attendance(100%) and they had covered everything that they wanted to, they got more out of it this year than last, there is overworking players as well, and they don’t want to do that.

When Coach said that about Ginn he quantified it by saying “at times in certain situations”, it’s no secret that Ginn had one of, if not the best OTA and minicamp performance, so throwing someone who stands out, a bone, is good practice. Also this is his first real offseason as a coach, so we really don’t know what his MO is, he is likely still learning himself.

I was also surprised by the late training camp date, but it may be that they intend to work them like dogs the whole time, and the weather down in So. Fla. is brutal that time of year, maybe its a shorter harder training camp, either way I doubt he is going soft, Tuna would have none of it:>)

Is that where they really practice

go figure. I’m sure the humidity is only 99% in August. It’s been 100+ here in Austin for the last week, playing paintball when its 105 isn’t ideal. Especially when your 48. I can only imagine how difficult it is to play football in that humidity.

And people attributed

our late season woes to it, too much work in the brutal So. Fla. sun, we had a stigma of late season collapses, and many thought it was due to working out in the So. Fla. sun, which works to our advantage when teams come down to play us early in the season, we are used to it, they are not, but many thought it had a negative affect as well, spending all that time working out in the So. Fla. sun would eventually wear the players down later in the season.

i hear u uncle finster

i lived the first 24 years of my life in sofla. its not the heat that gets you, its the damn humidity. it was 115 in iraq today, and im tellin you, it feels hotter when its 95 in sofla. Something about that moisture in the air just sucks the life out of you. I dont doubt that taking it A LITTLE easier at this time could pay off. But if thats the case, when else will we “take it easy”?? I hope the players are seeing some of these things as acts of kindness not weakness. Although i dont doubt that if they ever did, our coach and the tuna would have them back inline promptly.

I don't think people understand

that humidity until they experience it, I say the same thing you just did, when I was in Basic, in Oklahoma, it got to about 110 one day, but it wasn’t as bad as 95 in Georgia, where I did my AIT, cuz you can’t escape it, in Ok. you just went inside or got in the shade and then it was fine, in Ga. you could go and sit under a big ol shade tree with some ice water and not move a muscle ………..and sweat will continue to pour off of you, its like being in an oven, and that was Ga. not sofla! :>)

tell me about it

i did my basic at fort benning! ugh, horrible. speaking of terrible fl heat, i may be there for training camp on my r/r. ill be cutting it close, but im gonna try to check out a practice.

say doc, maybe i'm reading more into it then there is. the cold tighten's all the mussel's

shouldn’t player’s play better, in the warmer weather.

this year don’t we play every game up north, tward’s the early part of the late season snow’s.

by wild zion beaver on Jun 27, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

theoritically yes

but when its too hot, its very easy to become dehydrated. also im sure that the dolphins have to consume extra calories and sodium in their diets to keep from becoming heat casualties. when its too too hot, they will experience muscles cramping and fatigues. so yes, they warm weather will keep muscles looser, but its also much easier to fall out than it is in cold weather.

hell no!

first, if sparano says Ginn is looking dominant, then the dude is dominant. period.
second, if the training camp is starting later, i guarantee you that will give us an edge.

I completely believe that sparano is a straight shooter and does not say things just for the purpose of motivation, unless they are also true. I also believe that this staff knows what they have to a large degree (strengths/weaknesses of starters), and are going to give guys a chance to make plays under pressure, and then keep the guys that step up. They are already conditioned to a large degree due to the off season program AND they already know the system.

Until sparano proves the trust is misplaced, i assume he knows exactly what he is doing, and it will be successful.

It seems that everyone

Has been on page during this OTA period. They all seem to be doing exactly what they’re asked to do, and the coaching staff has yet to complain openly about anyone’s conduct.

I take this as great news, and I hope they come out as unified as possible.

I highly disagree with the premise here.

When I look at other teams like the Patriots for instance, they don’t have most of their guys preparing and working out like we do. Most of these have been in Miami working since February! Most of them have not had much of a vacation, except Akin Aoyodele who I think I saw in Vegas a few weeks ago. Anyway, I think these guys are preparing for a big season. It’s about work and preparation this year, last year they had to build a “team” out of scratch.

When I think of this team I think of Jake Long, Grove, Fasano, Langford, Merling, Roth, Crowder, Wilson, and Bell, etc. These players are some really tough guys that we all know are going to be ready to go when the season starts.

calling ginn dominant is probably a way for ted to gain confidence and emerge as a leader

ginn needs to start believing in himself and this is a perfect way to kick off the year for him. sorry if anyone else something similar to this, i didnt read anyones comments lol

Nice Post Mr. Medic

I see this, kind of lightening the load on players, as a natural progression. Last year Sparano had a new staff and a new scheme, with players that the staff didn’t know coming off a one win season. Before ‘08 the coaching staff didn’t know who was going to play QB, didn’t know if Ronnie was healthy, had 4 OL spots up for grabs, who was going to play ILB next to Crowder, disappointment with Taylor’s committment, and who would start on the DL.

This year is completely different. The only real questions going into camp is who is going to start at RG and who is going to start opposite Allen at CB. All other positions are reasonably set. Because of this, the coaching staff can focus more on scheme and preperation as opposed to who can play where. It is a nice position to be in and amazing that one year removed from a one win season that the coaching staff finds itself in that position.

Ehh

I’m not too worried about this. Hopefully Sporano and the guys are getting cocky that one good season is a change. We still need to come back and hard and hungry for this season. I know were gonna train till we drop. This year with a tough schedule were gonna need it. Let’s go fins

by MrMedic on Jun 27, 2009 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

I'm not worried...

As far as I know there are quite a few teams who don’t use all of their OTA days. It is actually common practice for the Patriots to not use all of their OTA’s. Its really no big deal. As far as the training camp is concerned I’m sure they will be ready…..I mean its not like most of our guys having been working out the entire offseason anyway. I’m sure we have a much better offseason attendance than most of the other NFL teams. I personally am more worried about the teams that have to play us :)
