Dolphins In Trouble?

The Miami Dolphins recently drafted quarterback Pat White out of West Virginia. At the time, many thought that White was the answer to the WildCat, myself included. Well, it seems that there is a minor problem.

In the NFL, there is a rule that states that a team may not play their 3rd string quarterback before the 2nd string. So, where does that leave White, and up and coming QB Chad Henne? Do we move Henne to 3rd string, and White to the 2nd team? Do we just list White at wide receiver? One thing is for sure, if the Dolphins do not overcome this minor speed-bump, then this minor bump, will turn into a major one.

CP10 starts....Henne backs up.....White listed as a WR emergency QB...i think u can do that.

if not just carry two qbs into the game….if they both get hurt (my balls just had a shooting pain)…we will run the wildcat everyplay and just snap it to white…LOOPHOLE!!!

its ok man…i think they might have thought about this a little.

This subject was gone over quite a bit

on another post right after the draft, and we still don’t know:>)

They are working him as a wr in some formations right? I think I read that somewhere.. that tells me he will be in on some plays as a wr most likely.

The QB deemed the 3rd QB (if he is inactive)

can play the 4th quarter without any issues. If he enters before the 4th, then QBs 1 and 2 can’t re-enter the game.

There are a number of ways around this issue and I’m sure the coaching staff will do whats best. Three possible scenarios are:
1. To have 3 active QBs on gameday – which will take away from the active 45 man gameday roster
2. Have White listed as a WR
3. Have White listed as QB 2 and Henne as QB 3. If CP goes down in a game, you insert Henne and bench White the rest of the game. Or you let White play QB and then insert Henne in the 4th, which would allow White or CP to re-enter the game.

This is all true

but which option is it going to be, thats the real question. my best stab in the dark, 3rd QB.

Would White

have to change his number if he’s listed as a WR? Didnt Kordell Stewart play WR for a little while? I think in his first 2 years, he caught more passes then he completed. Dont think he had to change his # though.

I think he might have to

if he is listed as a WR, Kordell had a double digit # if I remember correctly, and I’m fairly certain only QBs and kickers can have single digit #s.

No he will not have too

If White is originally listed at QB with #6 then is listed as a WR for games he will not have to change his number. Hester is a WR with #23, and Deion Sanders played all over the field with #21

Only QBs and Kickers can wear single digit numbers

If he is listed as a WR on the roster, he will have to change his number, you cannot list a guy as a QB on your roster, and then on game day list him as a WR, you can play a player at another position, you may have to report to the refs “eligible player at ineligible position” depending on that players number and the position he is going to play, a la “tackle eligible” when an O-lineman is lined up at TE.

Hester was drafted as a CB which is why he wears #23, and because he was listed as a CB/KR for his first two years in the NFL, he has been given an exemption.

So White can line up at WR wearing #6, but he will have to be listed as the second QB, or if he is the third QB wait until the 4th quarter, but the NFL wont allow him to be listed as a WR on the roster, and wear #6.

If that was the case R Bush would be wearing #5.

What I dont understand

is why this stupid rule exists? Gambling purposes?

How could a team take advantage of this?

by alskor on May 29, 2009 1:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it exists so that your 3rd QB - or "emergency QB" - doesn't count against your gameday active 45 man roster

He’s essentially a 46th guy. But he is supposed to only play in an “emergency” – as in your top 2 QBs get hurt.

Can your 3rd QB hold for kicks...?

If so, then we can line up in FG position and White could take the snap as holder and run Fake FG-Wildcat… :)

Confused.,.

What determines who is the QB? If none of our QBs are in the game and we have two backssplit deep, who is considered the QB? When Ronnie is behind center and Chad is out wide, is Chad still the QB?

My point is, is that if White is the 3rd QB and comes into the game at WR or RB and shifts to QB with Chad in the game, is that considered as your “3d QB entering the game” ? Same if Ronnie is at QB and White shifts.

I’m thinking that identifying White as a WR or RB might allow for more flexibility. But I’m sure their is some stupid rule that he has to play majority of snaps at his assigned position or some garbage like that.

Game Sheet

I beleive it’s based on the game sheet. This is why you have guys telling the ref’s he is now an “eligible receiver” when he is a lineman or so.

Not 100% sure though.

None-the-less, if Penne is #1 and Henne # 2, they’ll either make White a WR or White as a 2 so you can use him in a game. Theory being Henne will not play unless Penne is out. White handles it till the 4th qtr, Henne is inand White is #2.

It determines on where they are listed before each game

If White is listed as QB #3 pre game then he is the third string QB as an active player, meaning he can come in and play when ever. If he is listed as the emergency QB, he can come in but than no QB ahead of him can re-enter before the fourth quarter. If he is listed at WR or RB then he can come in and out and take as many snaps as the Fins desire.

The problem with putting him at WR, means the Fins would have probably 7 WR listed and only 2 QB’s. Yes if Chad squared goes down White can hop in, but he takes a roster spot away from other players

right

it all comes down to if the 3rd QB is listed as inactive or not. If he is listed as inactive, then once he enters the game, the team’s other 2 QBs can’t re-enter. Or they can wait until the 4th to use the 3rd QB.

Trade Pennington

First off…I love CP10. What he has done for the confidence in the future for all of us is paramount.

Now trade him.

I beleive he goes to the first team whose QB goes down in training camp for a 2nd or 2nd and 3rd.

If Henne is the next one, get him in there ASAP. The learning curve should not be 2 yrs for a smart QB from a big school.

Then our back-up White can be used as a weapon durning the game and not just hold a clip board like other #2’s do.
