Dolphins Saturday Rookie Minicamp Reports
There were two practice sessions today for the rookies down in Davie. Below are some links to the various practice reports as they roll in - with some of the highlights of today's sessions.
MIAMI HERALD
-Pat White looked much better today than yesterday.
-Vontae Davis was seen "clutching" his back a few times during the afternoon.
-The afternoon's highlight was a 40-yard pass from White to Patrick Turner, who caught it despite having Sean Smith "draped all over him."
-But Smith got the better of Turner during the morning session.
-315 pound NT Louis Ellis stood out, showing strength and an ability to penetrate - though it's hard to rate the line play since these practices are non-contact.
-Safety Chris Clemons is "clearly one of the fastest players on the field" - getting downfield first during punt coverage work.
PALM BEACH POST
-Pat White's passes were "crisp" and "on target."
-After a rough opening day on Friday, Sean Smith had a good day - slipping underneath Brian Hartline for an interception on one play and breaking up a few other passes.
MIAMIDOLPHINS.COM
-Pat White was not intercepted at all during the afternoon session.
-Brian Hartline "made a nifty one-handed catch" during position drills and then during 11-on-11s, Brian caught a perfectly thrown ball over his shoulder down the right sideline behind Vontae Davis.
-Patrick Turner had a solid day - showing the ability to be a target down the seam as well as being reliable on short routes and in the red zone.
SUN-SENTINEL
-Vontae Davis "didn't look great all day."
-Vontae "appeared to have hurt his lower back" and was rubbing it after one play - but continued practicing and didn't show any other signs of tending to his back for the rest of the day.
-Pat White completed a 45-yard completion to Anthony Armstrong "despite good coverage again by Smith."
-Jy Bond - the Australian punter - isn't looking very good at all.

Reasons for optimism...
Anyway, the highlight of the afternoon session was a beautiful 40-yard completion down the left sideline in which Turner beat Smith despite the fact Smith had excellent coverage and was draped all over him as they went to the ground.
The play showed the athletic ability of the QB, White, in that the deep throw was accurate. It showed the athletic ability of the cornerback who was in good position against a very big receiver. And it showed extraordinary ability and concentration by Turner who not only displayed good hands but the ability to run a deep route.
Looks like Patrick Turner may have been under-rated by the draft-nicks

I think Sean Smith is going to be the crown jewel of this draft class
The left-hander [Pat White] also threw a jump pass to the left side for 6-foot-5 receiver Patrick Turner that 6-foot-3 cornerback Sean Smith — the team’s later second-round pick — jumped knocked down.
It was a good day for Smith, who got smoked on one deep route Friday. Before that big breakup, he slipped underneath Hartline to pick off one of White’s passes. Smith is another guy to look out for, since, after having a tough day, he learned from the tape and applied it on the field the next day.
"I gave up a deep ball, got scored on, and that was something I definitely wanted to correct today," Smith said. "Me being a bigger defender, that’s one thing I can’t give up, the deep ball."
No more jump ball touchdowns/first downs

If Smith can play
he will be the steal of this draft…..seeing him in the practice videos is impressive…….He has the size, speed and strength to stay with TO and Randy and watching him move in and out of cuts is totally amazing for a guy his size…….I am looking forward to seeing him in pads……I can see us having these two bookends for yrs to come……throw in some great safty play and our secondary will be a force. On the offensive side of the ball this Turner kid is everything smith is but he’s a receiver, I can see these two have epic battles in practice making each other better in the process
I just heard on the news the cowboys practice facility was knocked to the ground by a storm with the players and coaches in it……I hope everyone is ok……..
hmmm
i love the difference in reporting about Davis’ back…The Herald says that he clutched his back a few times, while the Sun-Sentinel saying he rubbed it once and thats it…wonder which is correct……..otherwise, like what i am hearing about Turner and Pat White

Easy everyone. It's rookie camp
no pads. While the reports sound good, these camps are the same as the combine, shorts and shirts. Lets see what happens when they put the pads on.
you're joking.

hopefully
and btw, why all the sudden is the media referring to him as Chad Ochocinco…it really starting to annoy the shit outta me

Because thats his official name now
He went and had his name changed in the middle of last season, but the only reason he didnt have it on the back of his jersey last year is because Reebok already printed a ton of jerseys with “Johnson” on the back for sale and they said that if he insisted on changing the name on the back of the jersey mid season that he would have to purchase all of the outstanding “Johnson” jerseys to cover the costs of putting out new Ochocinco jerseys. He will have Ochocinco on the back of his jersey this year.
yea, but that also
prevented the media from calling him Ochocinco???….wow this guy is a nutjob

This tidbit caught my eye
what really caught Sparano’s eye was Turner’s ability to drop his hips quickly for such a big receiver, which means he can stop on a dime and sit down in an open spot on the field before the defensive back can react, thus creating separation.

I can see now why Sparano likes higher Wonderlic scores...
3 installments of packages in first 2 days of rookie camps. I have to imagine the Fins get there rookies up to speed faster than most NFL teams do. Any thoughts?
