How we utilize Pat White

There's been a lot of talk lately about how we can use Pat White.  How he will be a great Wildcat option while remaining our #3 QB.

But this can't happen.

I've explained it to a couple of people, and I know some of you now understand the rule. But, in case I haven't made sense, or you haven't seen my comments, I thought I would explain more, with the help of Tim Graham and ESPN.com.

Star-divide

The NFL currently allows a team to activate 2 QBs for a game, and dsignate a third QB as the "emergency QB."  This means, even though he was technically inactive all year last year, John Beck would have been able to see the field if (1) Chad Pennington and Chand Henne had been injured or (2) the coaching staff decided to put him in the game (otherwise, why would he be on the sidelines in pads and be "inactive").

However, there is a a stipulation to this...

The third quarterback doesn't count toward the 45-man roster, but if he is inserted into the game before the fourth quarter, then the first two quarterbacks are not allowed to go back in at any position.

What does this mean?

That means the Dolphins would have to designate Henne their third quarterback so White could get on the field in the Wildcat.

The Dolphins could list White as a regular player, but then another contributor would lose a spot.

So basically, we just made Chad Henne the #3 quarterback.

"If Pat's the second quarterback at the game and something were to happen to Chad [Pennington] during the course of the game it affects my decision-making. If I bring No. 3 in, then neither Pat nor Chad can re-enter the game."

                                           - Tony Sparano

Now, we have to look at the options here.  Do we make Pat White the #2, and risk making Chad Henne the #3?  That lets White get on the field during the game (and add his ability to the Wildcat), but if Pennington (who, let's face it is injury prone - especially in a year following a good year for him) gets hurt, we either make White the QB for the rest of the game or we bring in the "QB of the future" in Henne and lose both Pennington and White for that game.

Or. do we keep Henne #2, but lose White's playmaking ability?

Should be interesting to see what happens.

not exactly right

the phins can keep all three active for the game by only dressing 45 players, hence they would lose the exemption that allows a team to dress an extra player….

or they could list white at tailback or whatever they wanted as part of the 45 and then dress whomever else they have on the roster as the 4th QB….

You mean a fourth QB?

If White doesn’t play at his “listed position” your wasting a spot, and there is not enough spots as it is:>)

There is no "whomever else" on the roster

hence the Question about a 4th QB. So no It isn’t clear

doesn't have to be a QB

just someone designated as one to dress in case of a crisis (say an extra wide out)

Nice Post Mosul

Some around the site are considering the 53 man roster. But that is kind of irrelevant. The important roster is the game day roster of 45 + 1. For White to be effective he has to be listed as the #2 QB. If he is listed as anything else, the negatively affects the 45 man game day roster.

Assuming he is the #2 QB, who then are the WR’s on the game day roster? I think the coaching staff will have only 5 WR’s: Ginn, Bess, Turner, Hartline, London. Ginn, Bess, & Turner are the main WR’s. Hartline and London are your special teams players. All other WR’s currently on the roster will either be cut or on the practice squad, IMO.

Good explanation Mosul, for us "users."

Since White’s not really a QB, WR, or RB. Then we’re wasting a spot somewhere on the roster? All that versatility’s a negative?
It does bring up a bunch of scenarios to consider. If they’re all so bad then
was this guy a player we took to keep him from other teams? Trade later?

I doubt he’ll ever take Henne’s position but I do think he’s going to play -(maybe not this year) alot.

Larry Little and I both wore 66 in our football careers. I think that means something.

Nice observation Mosul

if the coaching staff is sold on using White in the wildpat and listing him at qb then its a no-brainer. Make White #2, and if anything happens to CP, put in Henne (if he’s the best option of course) and sit White for the rest of the day. But if CP has a chance to come back in the game, they would have to let White hold the fort for awhile. Hmmmm, maybe not a no-brainer. It depends on how much they would trust White.

Thanks everyone for the comments and the recs

I’ve read back through this a couple of times, and I was kind of worried that it came across as condescending or arrogant. If it did, I’m sorry, that wasn’t the intent. I just wanted to make sure that eveyrone understood why P-DUb may become the #2 QB, even if Henne is better.

Only reason I even know this rule is because of Tom Tupa with the Jets. He was their #3 QB, but was also their punter, so he had to be listed as the #2 QB so he could come on the field to punt.

I’m surprised I got the recs, so thank you again!

I am sure it will all work out

Tony and Bill are bright men, I do not think this will be a problem for them to figure out. Given Penny’s injury history, it would be a big loss to have him go down in the first for the remainder of game and have the dilemma of who to put in. Either they have 3 active QB’s for every game, or put Pat at a different position.

IMO, the best option is to list him as a WR

and utilize him at least part-time.

A) he’s able to come into the game and run our normal offense, and we can seamlessly transition into the Wildcat without sending in a substitution package that tips our hand to the defense (ie. White comes in for Pennington).

B) we can play him at any position we want without having to worry about the QB depth or the 3rd QB rules, and he can still play QB whenever we want him to. Just because you list him as a WR doesn’t mean he can’t QB 15 plays a game.

C) he’s a terrific athlete, and I think you waste much of that athleticism playing him at QB, unless we’re running a similar “spread option” offense he ran in college. If he’s in the shotgun, throwing it to other people all game long, he really never gets to be the explosive playmaker I believe he can be. Playing him at WR, RB, QB, KR, PR, hell anywhere a player can actually touch the ball, you get the full Pat White Package.

says you

Wait till the teams start cutting down their rosters and some QB’s that are on rosters get cut. We got rid of Beck because he stinks.

They may think White is a QB, but I disagree. We’ll see what happens when guys get cut and there’s some other QB’s available. I don’t know why you’re so dead set on Beck’s potential. He’s 28, has more fumbles than starts, and has never been higher than 3rd on a depth chart (excluding when he was bumped up for Trent Green’s injury). He’s now 3rd on Baltimore’s depth chart.

btw, I’ll support Pat White as a QB, because I’ll accept the fact that David Lee, Dan Henning, and Tony Sparano know more about QB’s than I do, but I also trust myself when I evaluate a QB, and I don’t see full-time NFL QB in Pat White.
