Uniform numbers of Dolphin draft picks

I know a lot of you care what jersey number our draft picks will be wearing.  Here they are, according to the team's official web site:

Pat White - 6
Vontae Davis - 24
Chris Clemons - 30
Sean Smith - 31
J.D. Folsom - 59
Andrew Gardner - 63
Brian Hartline - 82
Patrick Turner - 84
John Nalbone - 86

Keep in mind that a change could be made prior to training camp.  Perhaps Pat White tries to buy the #5 off of Dan Carpenter, for example.

Love that Davis is number 24

Personal thing..favorite number.

I have a great feeling Davis is going to be..well, great.

I also plan on going out and buying a Vontae Davis jersey as soon as possible.

IYO, is the only real reason

that Davis was available to us at #25, his off the field “coachability” issues? I mean, I’ve watched some vids, and read lots of stuff on him, and his Madden rankings are off the charts, haha, so I can’t see why we were able to get him…

I understand that line of thinking

if you are the Bengals, and you lead the league in arrests, but for a team with a farily clean record like the Dolphins, it seems there is little to no risk with that. We are SOOOO LUCKY to have him, IMO.

patrick turner was #1 at usc. is that not a possible number for him to wear or does he just want to change his number?

it very uncommon

in the NFL for a receiver to be in the single digits…usually they are in the 80’s, but there is a trend going around now with some receivers going into the teens

WR's are not allowed to wear single digits

they can wear numbers in the teens or in the 80’s.. and I believe they’re allowed to wear running back numbers too, because Hester wore 23 last season.

yea that what i was thinkin

but didn’t want to say it in case i was wrong…QB can only be 1-19 or something…RB and CB/S in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s…LB in the 50’s…and linemen in the 60’s, 70’s and 90’s…correct me if i am wrong

I'm not sure

how they listed him last year. I think sometimes the NFL makes exceptions for marketing and stuff.. so since there was already a whole bunch of Hester 23 Jerseys mass produced, they may have wanted him to keep it even though he was a WR last year.

Or WR’s can wear RB/DB numbers as well. It got confusing when they opened up the teens to WR’s, because they technically said QB numbers were available to WR’s, but not the single digits lol

I’m gonna find a link to the NFL Numbering Rules and figure this one out

haha you do that

keep me updated lol…i really like this numbering system, you know what position the guy plays just by looking at his number, unlike in college where nothing is consistent, u got WR in single digits, kickers in the 90’s, linemen in the 20’s…ridiculous stuff, maybe college should adopt the same type of rules

wait got something

here’s the link

“It should be noted that this NFL numbering system is based on a player’s primary position. Also, if a player changes primary positions during his career, he does not usually have to change his number unless he changes from an eligible receiver to ineligible or vice versa "

So that would explain why Hester was able to keep 23.. 23 is still an eligible number, so he was able to keep it when he went to WR.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I would definitely wait before purchasing any jerseys.

I almost bought a #79 Jake Long last spring, but fortunately, I held off long enough for the team to cut Drew Mormino and give him his old #77.

Pat White in 6.. hmm

That tells me, at least at this moment, that he’s getting an opportunity as a QB. He’d have to be in the teens or 80’s if he was a WR, so it appears he’s starting out listed as our 3rd QB right now..

I believe we drafted him specifically because he’s a hybrid type player and could be an explosive WR and a valuable weapon for the Wildcat and in the return game, as well as for any trick plays we can dream up

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Apr 28, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

because the season isn't tomorrow

and I don’t believe we’re done adding to the roster. It’ll be interesting to see if we go after a QB as an UDFA, or once June cuts are made (speaking of which, because of the cap situation, will there be June cuts this year?). I can’t envision the roster being done and complete the day after the draft.

Beck being cut says more about Beck to me than it does about White. It tells me that Beck stinks and wasn’t worth even a 7th rounder to the rest of the league, so regardless of what White will be, Beck wasn’t in the plans

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think in the end though...

He will end up our #2 QB, that way we can utilize him in various ways.

If I was the trifecta I would have him immediately work on his pass catching skills in case we need him to be a WR in some formations. This kid has a fantastic attitude and has already said he will learn anything that the team needs him to.

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Apr 28, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Well KC...

With Beck getting cut it only leaves 3 QBs on the roster. So how is anyone reading too much into it.

  1. White wants to be a QB
  2. Sparano said we will use him as a QB,
  3. Beck gets cut to only leave us 3 QBs on the roster
  4. White gets #6, a number indicating he will be slotted as a QB.

So how is anyone reading too much into it?

by Andy Edwards on Apr 28, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

lol this is the best indicator of our intentions

than anything else IMO.

btw, I do believe we’ll sign another QB at some point (June cuts are coming, TB has like 7 QB’s at the moment) to replace Beck, and White will be moved to WR and play QB sparingly as a change of pace. He’ll be the so-called “Wildcat QB” and play WR full-time. It makes much more sense to do it that way. Now he can be in the game, as a WR, in the base formations, and we can run the entire offense. Then, without making one single substitution, we go into the Wildcat with White at QB. Because we didn’t sub, the defense is caught off guard and in a bad personnel set, and the Wildcat becomes more effective based on that alone.

If White is a QB, especially if he’s the number 2, he won’t be getting really any reps as a WR, so he wouldn’t be able to play there much during the game. Meaning in order to use him as the “versatile weapon” we want him to be, he has to sub in whenever we want to use the Wildcat. That’s a huge tip to the defense, and the NFL rules stipulate that if we sub, we have to give the defense time to sub as well. So they bring in whatever Wildcat defense they have, and now it doesn’t work.

On top of that, if Pennington, say, tweaks a hammy and has to come out for a quarter or so, Henne can’t come in, and if he does, Pennington (as well as White) is done for the day. It just makes more sense from a gameday viewpoint to list him as a WR

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, again.

I hope we do sign somebody else. Either an UDFA, or somebody like a Gradkowski or Griese or somebody like that, just for examples, would be nice. Somebody that has started before, just in case, God forbid, something were to happen to CP10 and Henne can’t hack it.

Well what if every team lost their top 2 QBs?

REally it is a scenerio rarely seen in the NFl

I've been saying this for a while

Pat White as your #2 QB essentially does prevent him from playing other positions, because you don’t want your starter and your backup on the field at the same time. You don’t want to put yourself at risk if White goes across the middle and gets jacked, because now you have to be real conservative with Pennington. You would be one snap away from having 1 healthy QB. I just think it’s stupid to have your backup (who would be getting all the backup practice reps as well) in the game catching passes and running around downfield (all things that WR’s should be doing).

So you end up with a situation where, either Pat White is your backup QB, taking all the backup reps in practice so he’s ready, and then running around on gameday thisclose to getting his head knocked off play after play. Then, we all know the risks of starting QB’s (about half of the leagues starting QB’s are injured at some point during the season, on average). So now you open yourself up to the possibility of having one QB, who has no practice reps, thrust into the starting lineup. Isn’t that what happened to Beck in 07? Didn’t turn out to well.

OR, you have Henne taking the backup reps, and list him as the 3rd, so White can be the 2nd and be active. But, since White isn’t getting any practice reps, you essentially would have to skip over him and go to Henne if Pennington is hurt for the whole game. Now it’s completely useless to list Pat White as a QB at all.

I have no problem with our coaches saying “Pat White is here to be a QB” and treating him as such, but you can’t do that AND try to use him as a WR/KR/Wildcat guy. If he’s gonna compete with Henne, fine, make him a QB, but then IMO you’re wasting many of his best attributes and disabling him from helping our team.

I guess that makes sense...

but at the same time then some WR who was on the team last year will not be on there this year. With the success that Camarillo and Bess had last year, I find it hard to believe that both wont be on the team. The Trifecta loves London

So that leaves Ginn? I highly doubt that, and if you were going to add White to be a WR then why draft both Turner and Hartiline?

To me it doesnt add up to make him a WR because of who we would have to cut to make a spot for him there.

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Apr 28, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Camarillo I think might be topped out

you know what you’re getting from him, but he isn’t getting any better, and he’ll probably be worse following the knee injury. He’s pretty much expendable as well, since Davone Bess does everything Camarillo does, but better. London I have high hopes for, but I think he’ll be competing hard for a spot with Turner and Hartline. It’s not a bad thing if one of them gets cut, because they competed and we will keep the best one or two.

This is my prediction for the WR corps next year
Ginn
Bess
White
Turner
London
Hartline

Camarillo and Wilford will be gone. I think we’ll carry 6 this year instead of 5, and probably activate 5 this year instead of 4.

We cut Beck, honestly, because he was dead weight.

White will be a “Slash” type player, much like Kordell Stewart was, and be used in any way that he can help the team. He will not sit on the sideline all season just because he is a “QB”, and CP is the starter. He will find his way onto the field in numerous ways.

I agree

and I think if he’s the 2nd or 3rd QB, he’ll be on the bench. As the 2nd QB, you really don’t want him taking punishment as a WR, and if he’s the 3rd, he’s inactive unless there’s an injury to Pennington/Henne

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe we will have 6 WRs

I remember the list of roster spots by position, I really think that the trifecta will take the one defensive position they are most stacked at and bring it down to 6 instead of 7, thus making a spot for 6 WRs on the roster

That is the only way I see it working.

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Apr 28, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

So in that vain here is how it could work

White, Camarillo, Bess, London, Ginn, Turner and Hartline

That is 7 WRs plus the guys we brought in now, we have to widdle that down to what 6 at the most, I dont see what guy gets release

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Apr 28, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Camarillo or London/Hartline/Turner

Camarillo is redundant with Bess there.. I think we’ll only keep two of the London/Hartline/Turner group, so one of those guys is out.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

It was only a couple months ago that we were all so high on London,

and now he is a cut candidate. Speaks volumes about where we are headed.

But you just said you love Londons upside

And so does the trifecta, I dont think either of those 3 are gone

They love London and why would you cut any guy you drafted? That is a waste of draft pick

Hartline might be brought in

just for camp competition. If he shows up and impresses, great, so be it. But, if not, just him being there will cause other guys, i.e. London, Turner, Camarillo to step their game up.

I do love his upside

but I also REALLY like Turner as well. I’m not locked into anybody really, because I know the team is still a work in progress and we’re still trying to get better at every position

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

and Ginn

I think he’s a lock as well..

but outside of those 3, the rest of the spots are up in the air

Nicky: Kinda OT-

But, I wasn’t around here when it happened, but what was your initial reaction when we drafted Ginn at #10 (or 9, whichever it was, I can’t remember) and not Brady Quinn?? I was remember thinking that after BQ was passed on by Minnesota in favor of AP, that he was ours. And, then, Ted Ginn Jr’s name got announced, and I cried and shit my pants simultaneously.

lol I wasn't here either..

but I was watching it in Illinois with my STL buddy and had my dad on the phone. I was chanting Brady Quinn! Brady Quinn! over and over again lol

We picked Ginn.. everything went silent for a moment.. my buddy made the first sound, he started laughing uncontrollably. I dropped a “WTF.. who?? why???” My dad didn’t say anything, I thought Cam Cameron just killed him by picking Ginn lol. Then he finally comes out with “what the fxxk was that?”

It was a very confusing moment

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I couldn't believe it...

I was so happy when he was there when we picked, and to pass on him, just made NO SENSE whatsoever to me. No need to worry, though… We took Beck in the very next round, hahahaha.

That's why

I’ve never been in favor of hiring the “hot new coordinator” as a first time head coach. i.e. CamCam. At least Sporano cam on recommendation of BP, but to bring in a guy with no HC experience is such a hit-or-miss risk. It’s just not worth it. Unless you have a GENIUS GM, then it’s destined to fail.

lol well

I think a defensive-minded head coach is a better bet than an offensive-minded one as well. Unless it’s an OL coach. It’s a mentality thing. That same aggressive, me vs you attitude that defensive coaches have works well in a head coach.

Well we have the trifecta now

So we are good

We have the greatest motivation of any team coming into this year

  1. we now have the toughest schedule.
  2. so many said your record was just because our schedule was weak; yeah and NE’s 11-5 with the 2nd weakest schedule was really impressive lol.
  3. we have the SB in Miami this season.

by Andy Edwards on Apr 28, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I even think Turner is too

He is 6 5 and has great hands, we would be crazy not to keep him for the reason we need him for. To move the chians, short yardage, ability to go over the middle, ability to go up and fight for the ball and the endzone production

Its a hole in the WR core that we severly need to have filled, which to me is why we picked him. So to me he is close to a lock too as long as he shows up.

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Apr 28, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

yup

the only way I see him being the odd man out is if Camarillo impresses, London really turns it on, and Hartline surprises people. Turner would really have to lay an egg, as well as have the other guys step it up bigtime, for him to get cut.

You’re right though, he’s probably as much of a lock as you can get

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 28, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Also you kinda contradicted yourself

You put all three of them on the roster with 6 WRs but now say that only 2 of the 3 will be on the team.

So which is it? lol

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Apr 28, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry

meant that only 2 of the 3 will be back IF Camarillo stays. I think it’s either him, or one of those 3 getting cut, not him AND one of those 3..

This is also based on the assumption that Wilford will be chopped

Wildpat question...

somebody ‘splain to me this…
You got a guy who, as a QB, won four bowl games in college, and was the MVP of the Senior Bowl where he threw a nice 39 yard TD and made a lot of smart plays. He was also the all-time college rushing leader for a QB. (as a side note, he turned down a 6 figure baseball deal to play QB in college) By all accounts, he put in a great showing at the combine as a QB, throwing accurately and with strength.
WHY WOULDN’T HE BE A QB?
I hate to go here/there but if he was white… I mean really, the guy has been an INCREDIBLE QB, wtf?

by phranchise on Apr 28, 2009 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

It has nothing to do with him being black

so don’t spout nonsense.

It has to do with the fact that he played in an option style offense in college, and that you would completely waste some of his best attributes by playing him at the QB position. He’s not a dropback passer, and the best thing about him is that he’s extremely dangerous in the open field and he’s as versatile a weapon as you can get on an offense. QB’s rarely get in the open field, and you really don’t want your starting QB running all the time, because of the injury risks (especially with NFL linebackers able to not only catch him, but kill him when they get there).

Can he be a successful QB? Sure, there’s nothing saying it will never happen. But I believe you’ll get much more out of him by getting him the ball in space and using him at multiple spots to take advantage of his versatility and athleticism. Having him hand off 30 times a game and throw it to lesser playmakers is a waste IMO.

I mean...

OK forget about the black thing… but why do we have to be tied to the traditional definition of QB. Like I said, the guy won 4 bowl games as a QB, not a WR or slash player.
I have a feeling that BP is onto this idea of changing the game. Remember that he was the one who had a personal interest in Jayson Foster?

by phranchise on Apr 28, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

his QB is not suited for the NFL

like Nicky said, this guy is at his best when he is in the open field, and that rarely happens for an NFL QB…he was an option QB, and that can’t be done in the NFL, the defenses are too fast…he is best suited for a position that allows him to run wild in the open field, like a WR or RB, and in the Wildcat formation…

so...

You guys are saying that the option offense is not doable in the NFL? You think they may wind up using him and Henne switching off?

by phranchise on Apr 28, 2009 6:13 PM EDT reply actions

no

i believe he will be used in the Wildcat in the same position Ronnie was used in last season, and also as a WR in more traditional formations and perhaps even a little at the RB spot…i do not think we will have the 2 QB system with them constantly switching off
