Dolphins release QB John Beck

I guess this shouldn't come as any surprise to anyone.  The Dolphins have indeed cut their 2007 second round draft pick, QB John Beck.  General Manager Jeff Ireland released this statement upon announcing the move:

"We want to thank John for his work ethic and his professionalism. We wish him well in the future."

It's a shame because I think John has the physical tools needed to succeed in this league.  But he was drafted by the previous regime and was put into a tough spot his rookie season.

I sincerely hope the best for John.  He's a good person.  He works hard and I really hope he gets another chance from some NFL team.  In the long run, though, this move is best for both the Beck and the Dolphins.

Hat tip to "shula13" for bringing this to my attention.

No way

To say he’ll go from chump to champ is stretching a bit. He’ll be 28 in August and has very little starting experience. I’m not sure what I’m missing here, but Beck was a bust folks.

maybe - maybe not
It’s a shame because I think John has the physical tools needed to succeed in this league.

not to pile on the guy – but he does have issues holding onto the ball…. the rest may just be psychological….
but my guess, since no one offered even a 7th for him that he’ll have to take an arena/CFL job before he gets another chance.

He was also running for his life everytime he sropped back to pass

So that could hurt his ability to hold on to the ball.

But, I hope he gets a good fresh start some where.

I guess this solidifies that White is on our roster as a QB.

what do you disagree with?

the guy fumbled at least once a game? and what did most of those fumbles have to do with the O-line? the cincy game – he was not pressured and just ducked it out there…. heck cleo playing behind the same o-line (while he stunk) didn’t fumble?

now the other stuff – being unable or unwilling to throw the ball beyond the line (aka check down ducker) i’ll give you might be psychological, but the guy certainly didn’t inspire his team mates….

and i’d question some of his success at byu as a 26 year old playing against 18-22 year olds…. as we all know there is a huge maturity change in people between their late teens and their mid to late twenties… so the guy was entering the prime years as a football player while playing against teenagers.

So yea – his arm strength is terrific.

yea

you got me on that. I thought Beck was going to be a very good player. But I’m not the only one. It’s easy to sit here now – or even back in ’07 after he got a chance to play – to say I was dead wrong. But i wasnt the only one to think he could be great. I remember Chris Mortensen and Ron Jaworski raving about him after we took him on draft day.

As far as the arm strength – that scouting report is just wrong. Here’s a fact: Beck’s ball speed was 61.1 miles per hour (link for factual proof). Cutler’s ball speed tops out at 60 mph (link). The reason you might now know John has a VERY strong arm is because his coaches at BYU told him that he didn’t have to gun it on every throw. He was told to make it easier for his receivers to catch by taking something off it unless he needed to bullet the pass into a tight spot – probably because his receivers were average at best in college.

So let’s end the arm strength discussion here. You can slam him for a million other reasons – arm strength is simply not one of them.

everything considered

he didnt have a true chance to succeed and this is just another case why it is in the teams best interest to go slow with Henne building the team caliber up while he watches and learns something Beck nebver had. It is just plain stupid to come to the conclusion Beck doesnt have the potential to be a legitimate starting QB considering the circumstances of what little playing time he got

There Has Been A Lot

…of teasing on the site about Matty and finsx’s passion for Beck. I’ve taken part in it. The fact is that he did not play well. In fact, he did not even “look” well when he took the field. Perhaps that flu thing. Perhaps he couldn’t cope with getting banged around. Whatever.

What I will say though is that John Beck talked well. In those first interviews with him you got a feeling that he was a fiery, cocky sort of QB that wanted to get out there and make plays. The earliest one, with Joe Rose back when he was on 790, was the best. He talked about Marino and how he wanted to play like him.

In the end he just looked scared. Line or no line. The difference between Chad Henne and John Beck is that one is fearless and the other is easily shook. Henne took the field and looked like a NFL QB. John Beck looked like a college QB.

Happy trails Johnny boy. Don’t forget to pack your Captain Moroni doll. It screws with the mojo of J-Peezy’s Jobu statue.

This comment above is the gist of Beck's 'career' here...

as Phinisher points out, Beck said all the right things in interviews and no doubt it got many a dolphin fan’s hopes up.

Admittedly I always had my doubts about Beck for a variety of reasons – byu QB, much older prospect, and obviously a big reason to have concerns was well, cam cameron picked him.

The fact is, despite the lack of supporting talent, he couldn’t beat out two journeymen, McCown and a Lemon, er Cleo Lemon – and remember, those two guys also were surrounded by inept teammates so it wasn’t as if they were playing with better teammates.

When Henne came on last preseason it was obvious that he was several steps ahead of Beck.

So at this point what else is there to say? Another strike against the already humiliated previous regime whose incompetence has lingered in the roster even till this day.

Good kid, just never seemed to recover from the shell shock.

Unfortunately, if you want to be a good QB in this league, you have to be able to get past it. It doesn’t seem that he ever did.

He was mishandled, but still, many a QB recovered from a bad start to make it in the NFL. Here’s hoping he finds a place to be successful.

by dab415217 on Apr 27, 2009 10:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He was doomed from the start

He was a Cam Cam guy. He was technically out last season, if you think about it. Was he active for any games? Maybe 1 or 2, if that. This is the best thing for Beck and the Dolphins, I think. Plus he can catch on with a team before camp.
Now Miami can go with 2 QB’s on the roster and create an additional WR spot for WildPat, who will also function as emergency QB.
I hope he lands with someone else and has success. Someone in the NFC, preferably.

as much as we bashed beck on here, i hope the best in his career.

he had an oppurtunity, even though it wasn’t in the prettiest of situations. however, in order to survive in the nfl, you have to make the most of any situation especially as a QB, or else it’s not gonna happen. doesn’t mean you dont have talent or skill, just not the performace every team wants each week— which is enough for a W. beck didnt make the most outta his opportunity, and the franchise is moving on. peace beck

For the record..

Lemon fumbled the ball on his first snap against the Bill’s when he replaced Beck, the next play Mularkey calls a roll out and he hits a wide open Ginn on a bomb.

At least Mularkey woke up when Cleo went in and got him enough time to throw it.

I personaly think Beck was an ok QB but..

But he lacked a line in front of him to give him a second or 2 to see what was going on. He was smart, he was a learner and he has a heart. His arm was pretty damn good and if he was not thrown into the lions pit with a front line that couldnt stop turtles from getting by them then he may have had a good chance. You take a fresh QB out of school and expect him to learn the ropes and be a top QB within 2 or 3 games just is not fair. I am very dissapointed to see them let him go. Given the right front line and a couple of receivers and some time and I think he can be just as good as any normal QB in this league. No he will never be a Marino, Manning, Brady ect.. but he will or could be a good solid QB.
