Dolphins signing undrafted free agents

You'll remember that by this time last year, the Dolphins had signed an undrafted free agent by the name of Davone Bess - a receiver out of Hawaii.  And all he did was have the 2nd best rookie season ever for an undrafted free agent receiver.

Well the Dolphins, like many NFL teams, are already back at it - signing numerous undrafted players.  Jeff Ireland said on Sunday he expects to add 8 to 10 players as undrafted free agents.

Here are the ones I've come across so far:

TE Jared Bronson, Central Washington
6'4, 255
A pass-catching TE who is athletic and can separate from defenders down the field.
Source: Sun-Sentinel

OL Mark Lewis, Oregon
6'4, 308
Was told by coaches he'd be a center/guard for the Dolphins.
Source: Sun-Sentinel

DE/OLB Orion Martin, Virginia Tech
6'2, 262
A high motor player who might not have the speed needed to successfully convert to OLB (ran a 4.89 40 at Combine).
Source: Palm Beach Post

DE Ryan Baker, Purdue
6'4, 295
Projects as a defensive end in Miami's 3-4.
Source: Miami Herald

WR Chris Williams, New Mexico State
5'8, 163
Led team with 86 catches for 1,271 and 9 touchdowns in 2008 and was 4th in the nation in receiving yards per game.
Source: NMStateSports.com

WR Brennan Marion, Tulsa
6'1, 185
Speedy big-play receiver who had 43 catches for 1,112 yards (25.9 ypc) in 2008.  He was a JUCO transfer and in his first year at Tulsa, 2007, he averaged 31.9 yards per catch - leading the nation.
Source: TulsaWorld.com

RB Anthony Kimble, Stanford
6'0, 216
A back who doesn't have great burst or speed, but is powerful, can block, and has good hands.
Source: Mercury News

More will be added as I hear them.  If you know of one, please post the link below...

yeah that's true

I really like the Orion Martin pickup. Chalk me up as thinking he’ll make the active roster

Strong sider.. Roth isn’t exactly fast either, and he does ok there

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

just got to be careful about getting him matched up on a TE or back out of the backfield….but that wouldnt be any different than Roth, i guess.

by Matty I on Apr 27, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's what I'm saying

Sidbury would’ve been the same way, but worse against the run, so I’m pretty geeked on the Orion Martin signing.. I think he could end up as this year’s Davone Bess.. He was nasty at VT

I'm banking on

the Trifecta expecting more out of our DE’s, and more out of Roth, and getting something from Wake and Charlie Anderson.

Also, I think they may be focusing on Crowder’s blitzing ability during the offseason as well..

• The Raiders did what the Raiders do. The team took receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and safety Mike Mitchell much earlier than they should have gone. One of these days Al Davis will have a great track team.

So.. this little midget WR we just signed..

Matty, what’s his 40 look like? Gotta be extra fast if he had those numbers at that size.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

pretty good

I’ll be they try him as a return man like they did with Foster last season, just to see if they can uncover a Devin Hester or something..

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I honestly like that strategy

a guy who is dynamic in the return game can help you soo much, and if you find a guy that can do that and only that, he’s still pretty valuable IMO.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

but i dont think we have room for just a return man

Ginn lost his return man duties

and I don’t think he’s gonna get em back since we’re counting on him at WR. White is an option, but he’s never returned anything in his life. Bess is alright. My favorite guy back there was Cobbs just because he caught the ball, ran straight, and got good field position, but it’d be real nice to get a TD threat back there

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

unless he's electric

you make room for a Dante Hall/Devin Hester guy, and figure it out later.

Saying that, there’s a 99% chance he isn’t near that, so you guys are right that he’s probably just camp fodder.. but I like the idea of at least taking a look

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

never hurts to look

we have a ton of receivers now, huh?

even after we get rid of Wilford, we need to choose from Ginn, Bess, Camarillo, London, Turner, Hartline

And then you throw in Pat White – who we really dont know how he’ll be used week in and week out

by Matty I on Apr 27, 2009 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really think White will be a WR when it's said and done

and used all over the place because of his versatility. But you have to list him on the roster somewhere, and I think it’ll be WR because you carry more of then than any other skill position, and he can come in and out of the game freely, as well as not tip the other team off to what we’re doing, say, if he lines up at QB in the Wildcat or some option scheme

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats the most logical

but White might have his heart set on being a QB….thats what worries me about him

by Matty I on Apr 27, 2009 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he was gung-ho about that at the combine

and he performed, but from what I heard about his workouts, he was willing to do anything and everything teams asked him, from running routes to fielding kicks, so I think he’s looking to get on the field anyway possible and help the team win. I’m sure he’ll do whatever he can to try and be a QB, but I don’t know if he’ll go the Eric Crouch route and demand it to the point of him getting cut

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

as for the other WR's..

I’ll make a early prediction that we’ll go with 6 active. Ginn, Camarillo, Bess, London, Turner, White, with Hartline eventually ending on PS, unless he beats Cam or BL out. Wilford will be cut.

If they’re high on Turner through camp, London may end up back on the PS, and Camarillo would be shopped for a trade if he loses out to Bess and White IMO

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah I know

it’s hard to figure out, because I’m almost certain London is a much better special teamer than Turner, but I don’t think we’ll keep them both..

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so according to PFT

9 underclassmen went undrafted.. that’s sad. Either they were flunking out of school and entered the draft on a whim, or they got some really bad advice and should’ve stayed in school.. what a waste

Overview

A former wide receiver, Kimble posted a career high 717 rushing yards despite missing time in 2007 and looked poised to emerge as one of the Pac-10’s better, more versatile backs as a senior. Instead, Kimble took a bit of a back seat to sophomore sensation Toby Gerhart in 2008.

While it may ultimately harm his draft stock, the lack of punishment in a heavier workload could translate into a longer NFL career – if Kimble can impress in workouts. Scouts certainly know he can be a productive back, considering Kimble rushed for 1,940 yards and 18 touchdowns during his career while also posting 60 catches for 485 yards. Had an arm span of 30 1/8 inches and a hand span of 9 1/2 inches at the combine.

Positives: Versatile back capable of helping in a variety of ways. Good patience and vision to locate the hole. Can get to the second level and gain yardage in chunks. Former receiver whose soft hands are evident as a reliable receiver out of the backfield. Willing to take on the blitzing linebacker in pass protection. Also has experience returning kicks (22-yard average on 26 returns from 2007-08). Team-first guy who mentored Gerhart and other young backs.

Negatives: Jack of all trades, master of none type. Lacks burst to the hole and doesn’t have the acceleration or straight-line speed to capitalize when he’s in the open field. Not much of a power runner despite good size due to his upright running style and marginal leg drive. Missed five games in 2007 with a right shoulder injury.

so... yeah...

Goodell apparently banned you from the league because it would be “unfair”

on the bright side, he’s paying you a percentage in the new CBA once it’s signed lol

We'll see what the new CBA comes out to..

I tried to get 5% of total revenue on the threat of you showing up at a stadium and suiting up, so that should go through.. that’ll be bigtime money.

I’ll place a call to Al Davis in the morning to ask if he still wants to write the check on the chance that Goodell changes his mind. He drafted the 73rd best safety in the 2nd round, so this should be cake lol

kk nicky i have another question

if we have 4 qb’s on roster. white is listed as third (behind beck, or henne) does that count as the emergency qb role?

yeah the 3rd QB is pretty much always the emergency QB

unless you anticipate multiple injuries. Your starter/backup are listed as “active” while the 3rd would be “inactive” for that game (unable to play). That changes if there is an injury to a QB, in which case the 3rd QB becomes active, but once he enters the game, no other QB can reenter (hence the term “emergency”) It’s basically a way to let teams activate another guy who may play under the 45 man rule, and still be secure if there are multiple injuries to the QB’s.

i was just reading up on Jared Bronson

it sounds like he can be a pretty productive player…his main downside is that he lowers his head while blocking and that can be fixed very easily through coaching and shouldn’t be too much of a concern/problem…positives are “Legitimate NFL build. Good initial quickness off the snap and can elude the jam to gain a clean release. Rare combination of size and straight-line speed. Smooth acceleration. Can sink his hips and generate some burst out of his breaks to separate from the defender. Reliable hands. Looks the pass in to make the secure catch. Good body control to contort in space to make the tough reception. Good hand placement and flashes the upper body strength to provide an initial pop as a run blocker.”

I'm really not surprised that they drafted

and signed TE’s, considering Martin and Fasano are FA after this year. I didn’t think it was a need, but these guys really value the TE position I believe, so covering your ass in case you lose one or both of those guys is smart. Plus, Nalbone is a jersey guy, and Parcells loves him some jersey guys

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea i remember

a while back someone (can’t remember who) made a post saying that TE really is a need (a hidden need if you will) and i remember thinking he was crazy and that we had many more impt needs, and i think a lot of people felt the same way as I, but i guess the FO feels differently than I do (which is all that matters I guess lol)

I think that depends largely

on how we feel about the new TE’s (Haynos, Nalbone, the UDFA’s) and how much he wants. He’s a Parcells guy, drafted by him Dallas then he traded for him immediately once he got here, so I don’t think you’re wrong, but we all know that they won’t overpay him unless they feel like he can be Jason Witten/Antonio Gates/Tony Gonzalez elite.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 27, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think you're right

if Haynos does pan out as well as the new UDFA TE we signed, Jared Bronson, someone who i am getting more and more excited about, i think we pass on Fasano…but if not then we def keep Fasano and could get big money, depending on the year he has…wow i am really happy about our TE situation, i think we have some very very quality guys there…i think Martin is all but gone unless something drastic happens

Got another one

don’t have a link other than THIS, but it looks like we picked up C Alex Derenthal from Temple.

He’s 6’4 298, from Western High School in Davie, so he’s a local kid, and I believe we worked him out pre-draft at some point.
Here’s another link from the Temple site.
