**Dolphins select Sean Smith with the 61st overall pick**

2 61 Sean Smith
CB Utah

After swapping 2nd round picks with the Colts, and adding Indy's 5th round pick in the process, the Dolphins have selected Utah CB Sean Smith - one of my favorite players in this draft.  Smith measures in at 6'3 1/2", 214 pounds and ran the 40 at his pro day in 4.47 seconds.  He also has 34 5/8" arms.

Here's what Draft Countdown says about Smith:

Strengths: Excellent height and bulk with long arms...Smooth with outstanding athleticism...Decent speed...Very good hands...Terrific ball skills and body control...Very agile...Physical and aggressive...Supports the run well...Reliable tackler...Gets a nice jam at the line...Elusive in the open field..Reads and reacts quickly...Extremely confident...Lots of upside.

Weaknesses: May be a bit of a 'tweener...Needs to get stronger...Hips aren't fluid and doesn't transition well...Will struggle to turn and run with speedy wideouts...Doesn't change directions real well...Can be too aggressive at times and will get fooled...Has a tendency to get beat deep...Lacks a burst to close...Raw and is not a great technician...Limited experience.

Here's more about Sean Smith from our "Scouting The Draft" series.

Needless to say, I'm thrilled with Miami's day one draft.  Getting both Vontae Davis and Sean Smith is awesome!  Throw in the explosive and versatile Pat White, and day one was a success.

Steal

If Butler and Davis had been taken earlier in the 1st round and we used our first round pick on Smith, I would have been happy. This guy is an absolute steal.

Even after Will Allen leaves via FA..Vontae Davis (#1), Sean Smith (#2), Jason Allen (nickel), Gibril Wilson (FS), Yeremiah Bell (SS)..

Unstoppable, baby..

Now once we get Lawrence Sidbury and one of our Day 2 NT prospects, throw in some O-Line depth.

Wow.

What a draft.

To all those who were for Vontae Davis at #25

I acknowledge your superiority.
I am ecstatic that we got Sean Smith anyway. Good thing you all didn’t listen to me!
I am completely on board with the Pat White pick, still keeping an open mind because the Trio is not infallible, but I can see the wisdom of it, especially after last year when I was scratching my head over the Henne choice when there seemed to be good CBs still available.

I was for Patrick Lee 6-0 194 (Auburn) instead of Chad Henne

Lee (born in Miami Fl) had all of 2 tackles and a pass deflection, while we have the QB of the future and Beck will probably be traded/released.

Agreed

Then he will be a slash type of player, who could develop into a wide receiver. He also adds another dimension that we do not have when in the game. Definitely hard to cover an offense with him, Ronnie, CP and the other guys in there. It is going to be interesting.

not a passing formation, it works cuz its Ronnie up the middle 80% of the time. Then when you pass, you catch them off guard, cuz there leaning forward, expecting a run, running a QB up the middle 80% of the time wont get a defence leaning forward, and it wont help the longevity of his carrer either:>)

What does everyone think?

Hello, name is Tom, and a fellow Fins Fan from Ohio. I’ve been reading this blog for days, but figured I’d finally post. Love the articles and inside. But my question is, do you think that the Trivecta believes that strongly in CFL star Cameron Wake. Or does this possibly open up a return for Jason Taylor since we completely ignored LBs the first 3 picks?

by OhioFinsFan on Apr 25, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

Welcome Ohio

I think they must like Wake alot, but i wouldnt be surprised if they bring in Taylor and still get another LB in the 3rd or 4th rounds. Depth is always good. I would have like to have English or Barwin but they Trifecta did okay last year.

i love the Sean Smith pick

but i am completely stumped by the pat white pick. he is a little too small to play QB, too light to be effective as a pure RB, could be a WR, and yes i understand the implication for the wildcat formation, but that can’t be his primary role (screw the guys at the herald talking about him being drafter just for the wildcat). Is he going to primarily play WR?

i just don’t think anyone else was exactly waiting in the wings to pounce on him… i just don’t get it.

by MassFinFan65 on Apr 25, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

that I would love to see Boldin as a Phin. I wonder if that was part of the reasoning to drafting Pat White. He can either add to the Wildcat, or he can be a replacement to Brown if they decide to trade him in a Boldin package. I love what Ronnie has done for the Phins, but if we had to trade him to make the team better, I’d go for it.

by Chupathingy on Apr 25, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll trust the Trifecta

in that they chose Pat White for a reason. I think that he gives a great amount of versatility to the Wildcat, and he can be used as a WR or a RB if need be outside of that. Parcells especially loves the hybrid players that can be very flexible in their uses. Overall, I’m happy with the picks today, even if I don’t know what exactly they are going to do with White, we still got some CB’s to shore up the secondary.

Who do you think wins a starting spot opposite Will Allen (beating out Eric Green)?

My money is on Sean Smith, but if they take time to develop him (because he is inexperienced), I won’t mind, since they only spent a late 2nd rounder on him.
I see Vontae Davis coming in as a nickel safety in the slot. Great run defender and can cover the TE split out wide, but then so could Smith…choices choices
Pat WHITE, Ronnie BROWN, Eric GREEN, what’s going on here?

great day 1 draft.. got exactly what we needed.

pat white in the wildcat. sweet. however, i bet the wildcat was 2008-09 stuff and this year there will be a new formation to trick teams. idk what, but wildcat was designed for only 3-5 yards a shot, i think this year we incorporate something new with pat white

As a fan of the Utes & the Panthers

I would like to both congratulate you guys on getting a stud (the Utes fan in me) and hate on you for taking the guy I really hoped the Panthers would take (the Panthers fan in me).

I’m not quite sure why the Panthers passed on him in the 2nd round… they took a lesser known CB/S from Troy a couple picks before Smith went… but I’m pretty sure you guys got a steal at #61.

I did a profile for him earlier this off-season (it can be found here), and while I’m sure you’ve all read the pros & cons (like the ones listed above), I really encourage you to watch the video that is there.

I think I might have to start following the ‘Phins during the season… at least keeping tabs on Smith, if nothing else. Congrats on your draft in general… bit surprised to see White go so high, but if he fits any team, it’s the Phins.

Pat White and the Wildcat

Now when we run the wildcat, we no longer have to put CP10 out wide, but instead can use a WR such as Ginn or Bess. White is a terrific runner and thrower. This means that when defenses have to prepare for us they will realize that this is no longer a gimmack formation. There were two reasons that the wildcat formation lost its effectiveness later in the season. First of all, defenses did not feel threatened by Ronnie Brown throwing out of the formation. But the biggest reason was that our interior line was not smash mouth and therefore defenses stacked the line of scrimmage a la Baltimore.. Now that we have bolstered our interior line with Grove and the guards, defenders will will have to respect the throwing arm of White. Absolutely brilliant pick and fantastic day 1 of the draft.

Did you not notice

that Chad Pennington also took some snaps from the WC formation with Ricky coming in for the Jet sweep? There is no limit on the amount of passes that can be thrown from the formation except for the ability of the person taking the snap.

Why are you so insistent it can’t be a passing formation? It doesn’t work because its Ronnie up the middle 80% of the time, it works because it swings the numbers advantage in favor of the offense since now the person taking the snap has to be accounted for by a defender as well so double coverage is now impossible. The fact that Ronnie couldn’t really throw meant double coverage wasn’t necessary; now it will be so we can truly exploit the numbers advantage created by this formation.

If there are WRs on the field, and somebody who can get the ball to them, it can be a passing formation. David Lee, who helped craft the offense at Arkansas, threw the ball fairly regularly with Darren McFadden – but if you are that insistent that you can’t pass out of it then we’ll give it a different name. Bottom line, White can run OR pass and adds a dimension to the offense that teams are going to have trouble accounting for because they can’t stack the box anymore. Warrick Dunn is only 5’-9" and maybe 180 lbs soaking wet and he is going on his twelfth year I think? There is no reason White can’t have a long productive career either.

I’m not trying to be a dick- I think you are a great contributor, but seriously, you should do some more research on the WC, the Single Wing, the Zone read option, and other run/pass “spread” offenses. I suggest starting with smartfootball.blogspot.com

why are you talking college on a NFL site?

what you can get away with in college and the NFL are two different things, so it doesn’t bear mentioning.

White can run OR pass and adds a dimension to the offense that teams are going to have trouble accounting for because they can’t stack the box anymore.

but they wont have to, he’s not a threat up the middle, they may just put a extra DB in, cuz you tipped your hat when you sent him out there.

I’m not trying to be a dick- I think you are a great contributor, but seriously, you should do some more research on the WC

Umm- I did- and the WC was limited because Ronnie can't effing throw, plain and simple.

It doesn’t bear mentioning? I guess Bill Belichick is retarded for using elements of Urban Meyer’s offense then right? Seriously- do some research because you don’t know what you are talking about. Math is the same in college as it is in the pros- if your QB can run and throw a numbers advantage no matter where you are. Or you can just dismiss it because it’s not convenient for your point.

You don’t have to weigh 240 lbs to run up the middle, especially with the unbalanced line giving you two tackles to lead block, or I guess you would turn your nose up at Steve Slaton or Chris Johnson then right? Not to mention he will be able to execute the counter play much better. I suggest doing some more research for yourself next time you try to school anybody else.
