Rumor: Was there a possibility of a Ronnie Brown/Braylon Edwards swap?
That's right. According to the National Football Post's Michael Lombardi, the Browns had an interest in trading for Ronnie Brown. Here's what Lombardi writes:
The Browns seem to have a lot of balls in the air on the trade front. One of them was a slight interest in Ronnie Brown that was tied to Braylon Edwards, but it fell apart as the Browns backed off.
The interesting part here is that Lombardi claims the Browns are the ones who backed off. Does this mean the Dolphins were willing to swap Brown for Braylon Edwards?
So here's my question. Would you be in favor of a one-for-one trade of Brown for Edwards?

I'd have to say yes-
wide receivers are simply a more valuable commodity than RBs in my opinion. Parcells has shown he is fully capable of getting a starting caliber RB in the 4th. I am far more comfortable looking for a competent RB on the 2nd day than I am a WR anyways.
We’d be getting a playmaker who is younger and has only missed 1 start after his rookie year in exchange for a talented but oft injured player in the last year of his contract.
Not only that, but he has played with our QB of the future and shouldn’t have an issue developing a repoire with him.
I know he had a bad case of the dropsies last year, but he had Derek Anderson (aka Mr. I throw the least catchable ball in the NFL), Ken Dorsey, and Brady Quinn throwing to him, or at least at him. With a better QB and a change of scenery to help the mental aspect, and I don’t doubt he could be back to catching 16 TDs again.

i agree
If you look at the number of RB in the top 20 last year that were 3rd round picks, it’s amasing. Brandon Jacobs, Marion Barber, Steve Slaton to name a few.
A WR takes 2-3 yrs to develop. Look at Calvin Johnson.
I like Ronnie but to run the Widcat does not take that much skill. You need to decide quickly which hole to run through or play to call. Repetition in practice can give you this. I’m also of the beleif that he needs to be more explosive, he needs a 2nd gear. He is the last year of his contract and will want $4mil/yr(which is what Jones Drew got and he didn’t go to the pro-bowl and didn’t have major surgery recently).
Trade Ronnie for a top notch receiver andget a RB in round 2-3.
RB you can find easier then
If it's so easy
why didn’t any other team in the NFL run it as well as we did, even though many of them put the package in?
coaching and O-line
the O-line needs to understand the concept and be able to pull it off. With Sporano leading the charge and his thourough knowledge of the o-line, it’s not a difficult concept. The RB is not as important as the o-line. Any RB should be able to beat a linebacker 1on1. If he does not get past his own o-line, he does not have a chance..
it doesn't matter about the Wildcat
it barely worked after the NE game, and it was a joke in the playoffs. The Wildcat has nothing to do with whether we will trade Ronnie or not. It’s a gimmick, and I bet we won’t see it half as much this year as we did last year.
by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 24, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions
not only a gimmick
there was a post earlier on this year and basically(if i remember) it stated that our average yards per play were in the 5-6yrds for the yr.
Although I do agree that it should be used less often, it should be used when appropriate.
ROnnie should be traded/kept based on other factors, however, other teams may see him as a key to get their wildcat working.
1 more thing
it didn’t work in the playoffs becasue not many teams ran against Baltimore. they didn’t give up a 100yr/game rusher in 08.
I seriously doubt teams will try to get Ronnie based on running the Wildcat
16 other teams ran some form of it, and most teams have a guy that can run it.
Our average yards looked good, but it was basically ineffective in the second half of the season. It may be a part of our regular offense, but it will be a very small part once our base running game improves.

but a couple points…
arent’ they the same age and same contract status? (same draft class anyways)
and i’d do the deal and then ship edwards to the gmen for their 2nd and 3rd/4th which is the deal browns nixed with them.

no way
not straight up. Bill probably wanted another draft pick which is why the Browns backed away. Braylon dropped too many balls last yr and Ronnie is on the brink of being a special running back….I don’t think we are that desperate for a WR to trade Ronnie, I can see us trading Ronnie and getting a starting WR and a 4th or 5th rounder or maybe Bill was trying to get that extra 2nd round pick? Now that would be a steal………
I'm starting to think...
this Lombardi guy is just making shit up.. it seems that everyday he has some inside information about Ronnie Brown that nobody else, including all the beat writers in Miami has..
OUR RECEIVING CORPS IS FINE
and Brown is a stud
if we make this trade we will pretty much have to take a RB with number 25 instead of drafting a CB!

I wouldn't do it..
I don’t think Braylon Edwards would help our offense more than Ronnie. Ronnie is a better player, and Edwards is inconsistent. I think we’d have better luck drafting a WR than trading for Braylon.
I have to think, if he’s so great and can be an elite WR, why on earth would the Browns be pushing him on every other team in the league? Wouldn’t that at least make you guys pause and think about it? Ronnie is a pro bowl caliber RB, and before his knee injury, he was playing as if he was the best back in the league. He’s a year and a half removed from the surgery, and he should be back to his early 2007 form. I wouldn’t trade him straight up for Braylon Edwards, who I believe is 2nd in drops over the last 2 years, behind only TO (could be wrong).
by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 24, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions
Playing devil's advocate-
by your argument, how can Ronnie be that good if WE are so open to trading him? That argument just doesn’t really work.
For 1.) they are rebuilding and trying to stockpile picks, and 2.) its Eric Mangini, he is an idiot. Plenty of reasons they would trade him besides the fact that he isn’t any good. He is second in drops because Derek Anderson can only throw the ball as hard as he can, and usually a foot or two above his intended targets head.

double devil's advocate
well if the guy has lead the league in drops (or close to it) for his entire career can you blame it on bad QB’s for his entire career or do you just have to say – he drops a LOT of balls – and by definition a drop is a ball that the WR HAS to catch.
by W NY Fins Fan on Apr 24, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions
that's the difference between Edwards and TO
while TO is a lockeroom Diva and drop machine, he’s also caught 38 TD passes in the last 3 years.
You never want to see your wideouts drop passes, but if a guy makes enough big plays, then it might be OK. With Edwards though, he hasn’t made nearly enough big plays – save for 2007 – to balance that out.
Yeah but it hasn't been for his career-
its been the last 2 years and last year in particular. And a dropped pass is a completely subjective stat, so ‘catchable’ is relative. If it went over his head and was technically, but not realistically, catchable it may be credited- its really up to what the person who is looking at the tape (who likely never played WR) thinks should have happened.

hmmm...
pretty sure for it to be called a drop – it has to have touched the wr – but otherwise i agree.
by W NY Fins Fan on Apr 24, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I think it depends on the agency-
for example
Dropped passes aren’t an official stat, but Elias Sports Bureau tracks them. Elias uses a common-sense analysis of “should the receiver have caught the ball.” If there’s any doubt among Elias analysts, the player isn’t charged with a drop.
I take that to mean it just had to be deemed catchable, but you could be right.

yeah
we’re on the same page – kind of like sacks allowed…. who knows for sure and its hard to tell how accurate it is even if it’s there….
the only thing that we do know for sure – is where there is smoke there usually is fire and edwards has a lot of drops no matter who reports it.
by W NY Fins Fan on Apr 24, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with you-
he did have some drops, I just think a big piece of that puzzle is Derek Anderson’s lack of accuracy and touch, considering his dropping problem started when Anderson took over at QB especially. Anderson is a lot like Eli Manning in that he tends to put the ball over his receivers head, puts it over the wrong shoulder, and just generally forces his WR to make a lot of adjustments.
Winner of the 2009 Bill Parcells Award.
Less Lonely Leader of the Percy Harvin Bandwagon.
only thing i would argue
is that his drops predate anderson – he’s had issues every year… IIRC he dropped an unguarded td in his first game that hit him right in the numbers…. (granted that’s off my ever hazier mem…. what are we talking about????)

If the Phins Draft a RB in the first 3 Rounds...
…then maybe all of these rumors regarding Ronnie Brown were true.
I wouldn’t make the trade straight-up because Braylon Edwards hands have just been inconsistent over the years. Otherwise, why would the Browns even want to trade him.
Some of you make me sick
I understand that the poll shows the majority would keep Ronnie but the fast that so many still would want this trade, and actually think you can argue it, makes me really sad to be a phin fan. Ronnie Brown has been one of our few bright spots since we drafted him. Two years ago, he was an injury away from having the best season a running back has ever had. He came back early from such a huge injury and still blew it every one else out of the water. He is a true athlete as he was even able to incorporate the Wildcat so effectively. Yes, many of you may call it a gimmick, but I challenge you to name any other running back who you think can run it with such great pose.
Braylon Edwards, on the other hand, completely tanked last year. Yes, he has the physique to be a stud like he was two years ago, but you can tell he completely gave up on our team. Ronnie Brown was amazing during our 1-15 season. Edwards only had 873 yards and only 3 TDs! He even played every game. The team barely changed from two years ago. It was just the lack of heart from such a key player like him.
Let this season BE GINN!

I just hope Brown does not get upset over this

Need to see Ronnie with this vamped and healthy O-line!!!
There is a solid chance that Ronnie runs wild this year.
Healthy O-line with depth. ANother year of experience for most under Sparano. Another motivated offseason full of believers in the weight room. Another year to figure out the optimum offensive system for our talent.
RONNIE 2009-2010 MVP!!!!!
Ronnie Brown jus had a bad start
I honestly would’nt take any other back. I think we have the best one avail. Before his injury Ronnie was leading the league in yards and on his way to a league MVP. And after his return they thought sharing the carries would help prevent further injury, but I think he’ll really be 100% next year. Plus what can you really do without a line? He was usually forced to the out side when running standard plays. (non wildcat) I think he can be explosive up the gut. I think Ricky Williams is really good at running on the outside. Fake it to Ronnie up the gut and toss to Ricky. Bet we are top 5 in rushing next year!!
by westcoastdolphin on Apr 24, 2009 5:29 PM EDT reply actions
You guys kidding me
Edwards is by no means a Dynamic #1 like Fitzgerald or Moss. Sure he’s had a few amazing catches but he had over a 40% drop percentage last year. Ronnie on the other hand has shown that he is a #1 Running back. Don’t give me all this crap that Ronnie is injury prone, because his injurys have basically consisted of getting a hand stuck in a helmet, and a knee injury making a tackle. He seems to have recovered fine from his knee injury and with our beefed up offensive line I think he’ll be better than his ’07 form.
Plus don’t also give me that running backs are easy to come by. Sure “Average” running backs come by often and if you have 3 average Runners it a pretty good attack, but if you have 1 stud and 2 average guys, your running attack will be that much better. Defensive guys don’t fear average runners, even if they have fresh legs. They do on the other hand fear guys that are going to plow them over. But also dont say dont get rid of Ronnie because of the Wildcat, because though it worked great with him, he can be just as good without it.
in conclusion, I am not going to trade a #1 Stud Pro Bowl Running Back, for a #1 1/2 Kinda maybe sorta stud Wide Receiver who isn’t a sure thing when it comes to catching the ball. KEEP RONNIE
RONNIE BROWN GETS A TOUCHDOWN!
Hmmmm...
interesting comment in light of the fact that the leading rusher for the super bowl winner this season had all of 791 yards. And the super bowl runner up didn’t even have a runner in the top 25 as far as yards go.
This is a pass first league, not to mention that WR’s are productive for longer than RB’s, even the very best ones.
EXACTLY-
that is the exact point I made above- WRs are more valuable than RBs.
Everyone points to Ronnie’s amazing production in 07 before his injury- and it was amazing – but how many games did we actually win? ZERO! A good WR and a good QB can do a lot more damage than a good RB.

I'm not arguing that at all
Im just saying that, in this case, it would be a bad trade strait up because Edwards isn’t Top Tier
RONNIE BROWN GETS A TOUCHDOWN!
agree with your premise
but its not entirely true
here is how I would evaluate the positions
Select few RB’s are > then the select few WR’s (no way around it barry sanders had far more impact on a game and game plan than jerry rice)
Great WR are >= Great Backs (moss/a johnson have a larger impact then say portis)
good backs are = good wr’s (but good backs are easier to find – say ronnie brown vs b edwards)
average backs are much better then average wr’s (and they are all equal to find)
so if you are saying finding a good or better WR is much harder to do… yeah likely …. but an average back has a much larger impact on a game then an average wr
by W NY Fins Fan on Apr 24, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Caveat...
do you even need a great, much less (to use your verbiage) ‘select few’, RB to win the super bowl these days?
It seems to me the more pass friendly the game is, and it gets more so every season, the less importance RB has. Not that a super back like Adrian Peterson isn’t amazing, but just that you don’t need that kind of player?
yup that's the thing with the NFL
you can do things any way you want, no you don’t need that guy but i’m sure you win more games with LT in his prime than with O anderson… but then which one has lead his team to the promised land???
i’ll stand by my belief that greatness at RB has a greater impact on the game (hence the reason why teams take RB’s early) and by what i tried to show … that the gap between a Great WR and an average one is far larger then at RB… hence the reason a b edwards is likely more valuable than ronnie
by W NY Fins Fan on Apr 24, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeap, LT will probably never get to, much less win a SB
whereas Mewelde Moore just got a ring, then there is the old Marino Dilfer angle and who has a ring and who doesn’t.
I guess I’d summarize my position by saying the passing game is #1 in the nfl, by a good ways at that. THat makes receivers, (and QB’s, LT’s and pass rushers also) quite valuable.
With regards to Ronnie and Edwards, I tend to think Edwards is the better talent while Ronnie is the better producer. So far at least.
i would argue the production
edwards
rec yrd ave td’s
228 3,558 15.6 28
with 25 td’s the last 3 years
Ronnie
att yrd ave tds rec yrd ave tds
781 3,433 4.4 23 137 1,151 8.4 43
so i’d have to say that it’s pretty debateable…
~16 yds a catch is nothing to sneeze at and edwards has 28 tds to ronnie’s 25.
by W NY Fins Fan on Apr 24, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
RB’s have a much shorter lifespan in the NFL of the 2000’s than receivers. The best RB of the 2000’s, that being LT, is now on the verge of being considered over the hill at age 30. Meanwhile, Randy Moss was catching 23 TD’s and getting 1500 yards at the same age in 2007.
I think potentially, and that's such a loaded word right?, Edwards could be better...
than Ronnie.
Put it this way, elite WR’s are IMO, far harder to find than a top tier RB. By virtue of that, I’d say a top WR is going to be a more key player than a top RB.
The caveat with Edwards is he’s very inconsistent. So while he could easily be a superstar, and his 2007 season was an example of that, he can also be a big disappointment, disappearing from games and dropping pass after pass.
Whereas with Ronnie Brown, you know you’ll get top effort and good production. Maybe all of these rumors reflect that the FO is looking for a different style back. Otherwise, I’m not sure why you’d deal Ronnie.
thats exactly what I mean
If it were a Brown for Fitzgerald or Reggie Wayne I’de be all for it, no matter how much I love Brown. But the fact of the matter is, Edwards just is to much of a risk IMO to get rid of our Best offensive weapon for.
RONNIE BROWN GETS A TOUCHDOWN!
ah ok...
so you would make the deal for a Larry Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson. I think Edwards could be like those guys, but only if he got his game/attitude/act together, which is very questionable.
Thus, better to stick with the proven guy who is going to give you good production, which is Brown.
yeah but ronnie
hasn’t proven himself to be in the same class as those two WRs…
his career puts him at about edwards level…. has the physical talent to be better than he’s proven to be.

Edwards inconsistencies
had as much to do with the scrubs tossing him passes as his own ability. Derek Anderson has a big arm but is really really inaccurate- anybody would have a lot of drops if the ball is constantly being thrown over his head or you have to make a circus catch to haul it in. If you actually evaluate a lot of his “drops” a LOT of that variety as opposed to the ball hitting him in the hands and he drops it.

good point
he did do well in the few games Quinn was in there, I believe.
People are getting watery eyed and sentimental over this-
I love Brown as much as anbody. In fact, I only own 2 NFL jerseys – Brown’s and Dan Marino’s so that tells you how highly I think of him. But the fact is RBs aren’t worth that much in today’s game. It has become a pass oriented league and a great running attack isn’t going to get you over the top, otherwise the Giants, Panthers, or Vikings would have been in the Super Bowl.
RB is a great, heartwarming story- but he is closing in on 30 and its a contract year. If there is a way he can add value to a team with as many roster improvements as we need then I say you have to consider it.

Just to add to your accurate comments...
the rule changes implemented this year will make it an even more pass friendly league, and it was already a pass first game.
Which affects how the relative value of different positions changes….QB, left tackle, pass rusher, and WR have become the most important spots as a result. Whereas back in the day, great backs ruled.

Not strait up...
Parcells and Co. obviously don’t like Brown for the long run, and his contract is up next year as it is, so if they are going to cut him loose next year, then deal him, I really like Brown, but in reality management doesn’t… so I say if there is a chance to get Edwards, do it… but Brown is a more premium player right now, so they should have to give us something, even if it is a swap of our 3rd for their 2nd or something like that… in getting Edwards we can focus elsewhere with the 25th and 44th picks, fill CB and rush LB needs, and they seem to like LeSean McCoy, so they can maybe take him in the 2nd as well.
No way
Ronnie Brown is still young and has been great for us. I cant even believe people are even considering this. We are going to be fine the way we are. We need to focus on CB in the draft and get ourselves some depth.
I am stunned that so many on here want to trade our best offensive weapon away for something we don’t truly need. Some fans you are

First off where is your proof that Parcells even considered this trade? You dont have any because its not true. What do you do sit around all day and think up stupid ideas and then write a fictitious story and hope someone is dumb enough to bite?If you want people to believe your crap at least show proof that this actually could have happened.Ronnie Brown will not be traded for a WR who’s head is bigger than his a$$,and can’t catch a cold.Braylon edwards drops too many passes. We have a WR that is better than Edwards already. His name is Davone Bess.At least watch a game before you declare yourself an expert on this team.
I guess you have trouble READING.
I did not come up with this rumor. If you actually read what was written, you’d know that former NFL exec and current NFL insider for National Football Post wrote that he heard the Dolphins and Browns were talking about this trade.
