What about the multi-dimensional Percy Harvin (Florida)? My sources tell me he's a medical risk. He has undergone multiple surgeries on his ankle/foot, and I'm told there's a "hole" in his bone that will require additional surgery. And, oh, yeah, he's got a bad attitude and tested positive for marijuana at the scouting combine, my sources confirmed. Other than that, he's a Boy Scout.

-NY Daily News writer Rich Cimini, one of the best NFL columnists in the country.

And again, I'm left to wonder why so many people love Harvin so much and want him on the Dolphins. Is he talented? Of course. He's a top 15 talent. But at what risk?

where does this "hole in the bone" thing come from

first time I’ve heard that, and don’t you think that would’ve gotten some press if it was true?

I like it, I hope he drops all the way to 56 and we get the steal of the draft there.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 23, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

well thats a different story

if he was there at 56, I’d take him and hope for the best. After all, 56 is like an extra pick that you could gamble with if you want to.

by Matty I on Apr 23, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

honestly

there’s just waaay too many negative reports on him right now. I wasn’t believing all the coachability things and the “me-me-me” attitude stuff, but damn it seems like every writer is just killing this kid right now. I know about the trouble he got into in high school, and I know about the medical concerns and the weed thing, but there’s a million other things coming out, and it’s starting to turn me off on him.

If his only issues are durability and he smoked weed and he’s a little of a diva, that’s fine with me, I’d still take him at 44 because I believe our coaches, or any strong coaching staff for that matter, can control those things. But every where I look, somebody is bashing Harvin for something new. I just have a feeling everybody that passes on him is gonna regret it because if he goes to the right team and gets his act together, he could be a TD machine. And I feel like Sparano and Co. could keep him in line and get the most out of him. 56 would be a STEAL, and imagine if we get Butler/Kruger/Harvin? I’ll do naked cartwheels for 6 miles lol

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 23, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

At 56? thats a bit of a stretch, we would be lucky if he is still there at 44

As for the Marijuana thing we all knew that he has character issues, but this is the first time Ive heard that he has “attitude” issues and that is as big a red flag as you can get. Guys like TO and Chad Johnson have character issues but their attitude has always been a plus not a minus. A guy with character issues will sneak out of curfew and hope his coach doesnt notice, a guy with attitude issues doesnt give a crap. Like I mentioned before, there are guys with character issues like Charles Haley and Michael Irvin who will go and have HOF careers, but there are guys like Keyshawn Johnson and Pacman Jones with attitude issues and have their careers over in a few years. Big difference right there.

Aside from the publisized "flaws" with Harvin...

…my personal opinion is that they need more size at WR.

Ginn 5-11
Bess 5-10
Camarillo 6-1

Not a big WR corps. I don’t think bringing another smallish guy onboard is what we need. Granted there is London and Wilford, both 6-4 in the background, but at this point they can’t be counted on. That is why I prefer one of the bigger WR’s in the draft over Harvin. Even a Nicks, plays bigger than his size. Nicks reminds me of a Chris Chambers type WR, that plays bigger than their size would dictate.

In response to all the "talk" about Harvin......

24 games…..32 TD….OVER 3500 Total Yards…133 catches….avg 16 per catch…9.4 per rush.

2 National Championships

scored at least 1 TD in his last 14 games…including the National Championsip game to close out his career.

Total # of times being arrested = 0

If he has a “hole” in his foot then i want one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dl498S1-is4

We arent talking a top 5 pick….we arent talking a top 20 pick….we are talking #25. Id take the “risk” that he is a little over confident in his personality…i would be too.

If the "hole" in the foot talk is true...

…here’s what I get. You make jokes saying you want one too then because of how productive he is. But maybe the “hole” isn’t something that affects his play – but rather is something that could be a sign of injuries to come. That would be what I’m concerned with. Not that it will effect his production – but that it might lead to more injuries.

by Matty I on Apr 23, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

thats exactly my concern

He could have all the trouble Reggie Bush has had with injuries, and with that style of play injuries will kill a guy like them

Half of this stuff is made up anyways-

Did anyone ever stop to think that somebody is circulating rumors about him so he drops? That happens constantly. I don’t understand why we are believing everything we are hearing at this point, when people who praise prospects usually don’t want them, and people bad mouthing these kids are just hoping they fall.

I know two people who work with the team- and they say this diva, bad apple, etc. stuff is pretty much BS. He was just a competitive football player who had no more issues than any other kid in college. Not only that, but I was actually IN G-ville myself when he was there. You saw Joakim Noah around town, you can see Joe Haden around town, but you never saw Percy out even partying never mind doing anything crazy.

And for anyone who buys the selfish angle- why would he play on a fractured ankle in the NC game if he was selfish? It could have ended his career if something slightly wrong happened to it. The selfish thing would have been to miss a lot of games he played in.

All I can say is I am gonna be pissed off on Saturday if the damn Patriots or Jets take him – and you guys will be too once we have to play him twice a year.

he isn’t dumb when it comes to football. Urban Meyer’s offense is insane, and Harvin had to learn like 7 different positions.

Matty- you are looking at it the wrong way-

40 receptions isn’t that impressive unless you consider the #1 WR had only 44. You can only catch what is thrown to you- and if you consider his receptions as a % of pass attempts instead of a raw # he stacks up with anyone in the country.

Matty-

that is wholly untrue- Meyer’s passing concepts were all derived from Scott Linehan as opposed to the outdated Run-n-Shoot based offense Spurrier used.

Just because Tebow takes his snaps out of the shotgun doesn’t mean it doesn’t have pro elements.

http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/2008/12/florida-gatorurban-meyer-offense.html

Strangely enough, I would say that the inspirational fathers of Florida’s offense have to be Joe Gibbs and Dennis Erickson, who helped establish and pioneer the one-back offense. Indeed, as will be discussed below, Florida’s main run plays are basically the same ones both guys made popular in the ’80s, though from the shotgun and a bit more option sprinkled in.

no but heres the thing. sure you can give them coaching

but without experience in route running you arent going to be good instantly. sure you can run the crossing routes or the streaks but when it comes to other routes such as comebacks nd outs. you are going to become a liability

We don't need him to be good instantly

that’s not the point. Most of the top WR’s in this draft do not have extensive experience running routes, so that’s a moot point. When you draft a WR, you either get a guy like Andre Johnson who is the complete package immediately and you really don’t need to teach him anything, or you get a project who needs to be taught route running and techniques and all that. It’s rare that you find a guy that comes in polished and incredibly talented.

You, as a coach, have to teach a kid how to run the routes in your offense. If you don’t expect that, plan for it, and actually do it, there’s NO WAY the kid will be any good. Even a guy with experience running routes in college still doesn’t know how to run the routes in your offense, and still needs to be taught techniques to play against the best CB’s in the world on a weekly basis.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 24, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

OK-

but you love Michael Crabtree and they run even fewer pro-routes than the Gators so I don’t really understand your issue with that.

All things considered he runs as many pro routes as any receiver in this draft besides the minority of players who played for former NFL coaches- Nicks is about the only one who would qualify for you as a 1st round grade then if that is your criteria.

Harvin has good hands, and he gets in and out of his cuts quicker than anyone in the draft. He’s probably the most explosive player coming out this year, and the only guy I’d put up there with him is probably Jeremy Maclin.

this is the ESPN report from his pro day Notice the “5’11, 195lbs” and the “22 reps on the bench” then go watch some highlights of him breaking tackles and fighting for yardage.

wait wait wait

you can’t say that it’s “no sure thing” for Harvin, and then say Crabtree “is going to be great.”

They both come from spread offenses, they both have inflated numbers, and they both come in with injury concerns, attitude concerns, and “system” concerns. Crabtree did most of his damage on slant routes. Harvin did most of his on screens and options. The only significant difference is Crabtree is a few inches taller.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 23, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

neither of them has ever run a pro route tree

Crabtree has admitted he doesn’t know how to break a press covereage. Why is his foot injury not an issue? A stress fracture is much more concerning to me than Harvin’s injuries..

I believe Crabtree is as close to a sure thing as you can get (nobody is a sure thing).

What am I judging this on? The same thing all the scouts and all the NFL front offices do – their eyes. You watch. You make your own judgment/decision and that’s that.

There's no way Crab is a sure thing

he has the exact same question marks that Harvin and Maclin have, but he doesn’t have the weed thing hanging over his head, and there’s this artificial idea that he’s a pro ready WR, even though he’s recovering from a stress fracture in his foot and doesn’t know how to beat press coverage or run the route tree…

I would too

but he’s just as much a risk as Harvin.. besides, we aren’t talking about drafting Crabtree, just wondering why the same questions don’t apply to him that apply to Harvin.

If Crabtree overcomes his issues, he can be a STUD.. but why are those issues disregarded?

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 23, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just saying-

the AirRaid offense run by Mike Leach is as far from pro-style as it gets – you can’t slam Harvin for not coming from a pro style system and so strongly support a guy who plays in the ultimate system offense.

The AirRaid literally has like 6 plays that are just run from 100 different formations so it is literally as ‘gimmicky’ as it gets.

And Crabtree has almost as many character flags thrown about him as Harvin with people reporting Cleveland took him off their draft board after he acted like an ass at their facility. AND he just underwent foot surgery so there is also an injury risk with him.

I just see you go after people for being selective but you are being awfully selective about Crabtree vs Harvin.

Davone Bess is what 5'9?

he’s a pretty solid possession WR. Height doesn’t matter, catch radius does. Bess has a huge catch radius because he can get to balls behind him, he can jump out a chimney, and he’s able to get to anything within a few feet of him and catch it.

On WFAN radio in NY

Jay Glazer just said that he’s also heard the “hole” in Harvin’s foot. He also said that Harvin was kicked off of the basketball team in high school because he “beat the hell out of some kid on the court.”

by Matty I on Apr 24, 2009 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

yeah WalterFootball has this giant list of "character concerns" for Harvin

and most of the problems were in high school. If you grew up where he did, in the environment he did, I would expect you to have issues in high school. It’s just been a “lets see what kind of dirt we can dig up on Percy Harvin” parade the past couple weeks. The kid has been sliced and diced like we expect him to be some saint and not do anything wrong or make any mistakes.
