Anquan Boldin? He'd LOVE to play here!
The offseason between the start of free agency and the draft is a time for wild speculation and rumors. Sometimes the rumors are based on nothing but optimistic guess work on the part of over zealous fans. Other times, they are actually based on valid information and common sense. And just when you think things should be winding down, T.O. gets cut, Cutler is looking for a trade, and JT is stirring the pot with comments like "it's not up to me".
But Anquan Boldin? I thought we had started out months ago with speculation, and ended up at "not realistic". However, I have lately been picking up on tidbits from the Cardinals' camp that Boldin won't be happy without a new contract, which is unlikely to happen because of cap space.
Additionally, Rosenhaus (the agent everyone loves to hate) sent out a league-wide memo in February stating that Boldin was available for trade, but that it ouwld likely take 4 draft picks or so, including a 1st, based on the Roy Williams trade to Dallas. That deal cost the Cowboys a first-, third-, and sixth-round pick in this April’s draft, and a seventh-round pick in 2010. Not terrible when you consider only one was a first day pick. Rosenhaus also stated:
But anyone following this storyline knows that this is old news and things have appeared to quiet down a bit on the Q front. Until now.
Boldin, on a Palm Beach radio show, said he would love to play for the Dolphins.
Now, it still appears unlikely, mostly due to the fact that the Triad don't seem to like giving up high draft picks, and that even if they did, they would still have to give Boldin a new contract. But I can't help but wonder whether Boldin's desire to play here would get us any sort of "home town discount"? It's no question that Boldin fits the Triad's mold for a player in general, and a WR specifically... big, tough, hard working, reliable. He can block, goes across the middle, gets yards after the catch... and he is young and proven. As much as we have our own "man-crushes" on draft players, WRs specifically have a higher than average failure rate in the NFL, so there is no guarantee that even a first round pick would pan out. And as far as the cost, our first round pick is likely to cost in the neighborhood of 5 yrs, 14 mil, 9 mil guaranteed. So you have to spend that much anyway... how much more would it take to get Q? He is making about 5.5 mil / yr. right now, if you prorate the bonuses. He got 10 mil guaranteed, but is only making 2.75 mil this year and 3 mil in 2010. I'm going to guess that we might be able to work something out in the range of a 4 yr, 35 mil contract with 11 mil guaranteed and annual salary ranging from 5 - 7mil per year. This is probably a bit low for what he might be able to work out elsewhere, but I am factoring in the discount, and it is certainly more than he's making now.
And there is this to consider: The Cardinals only own him through 2010. At best, they could force him to honor his contract, have to deal with an unhappy player, and all the while his trade value would be diminishing the closer he gets to free agency. And that is beginning to look unlikely anyway, with Rosenhaus starting to stir up trouble.
So what do you think? I see all of the excitement around the WRs in this draft, but how would you feel about taking Boldin with our 1st rounder, and continuing to develop the guys like London and Armstrong that we already have on our roster? After all, it would give us stability at the position for several years, at least, and still allow us to grab some young talent in the next few drafts.
And just to remind you of his skills, take a look at this YouTube video of Boldin running through defenders. Maybe he could teach that to Ginn?

If you are going to draft a WR..
with a high pick (#1 or #2) why wouldn’t you trade that pick to get a proven player who is still young? There is no guarantee that Hicks or Harvin or whoever else is going to be any good. We know that Boldin is VERY GOOD. If the phins can get him with a first day pick, then get him.
(I feel the same way about Cutler, by the way)

Money could be a factor we would have to re-structure Boldins contract yes he is proven and I would love to have him
but if you can get the same kind of player without dishing out to much cash thats what your going to do

we wouldn't restructure, we would have to negotiate a new contract.
i included some numbers of what I would guess it would cost for a #25 pick, and for Boldin.

yes, but so is a first round pick.
Boldin will cost more, certainly. But I have a feeling that our F.O. could make it work out.

Hicks is the exact same thing
as Boldin and we would be getting a younger guy without the attitude plus i think this franchise wants to bring in younger and younger players so that we stay as healthy as possible.

you might be right
but Hicks is still an “unknown” in terms of transitioning to the pros. the bust rate for WRs is almost as bad a QBs. and Boldin is a tough SOB.

Keep in mind, there were 5 wideouts selected in the draft before Boldin
The Houston Texans’ Andre Johnson, the Detroit Lions’ Charles Rogers, Arizona’s Bryant Johnson, the New England Patriots’ Bethel Johnson, and the Washington Redskins’ Taylor Jacobs.
Only one of them has made an substantial impact. This is the risk you take drafting a wideout, and Parcells doesn’t have the greatest track record in this department.
At least with Boldin, you know what you’re getting.
Also, i have to disagree with the above comment about “attitude”. Despite being unhappy with his contract, he has actually been a pretty good trooper. As far as WRs go, he is certainly one of the best mentors I could think of for our young guys.

I have to disagree about his attitude as well
Look he was promised a new contract and well the Cards are holding out on him I would be upset to if I was told I was going to get a better deal and they keep me waiting not to mention not even trading him to another team so he can get what he deserves, bad attitude my foot he still went out on the field played his best and let this situation slide till seasons end.

I would love to have boldin
he is proven and he can start for us right away, he is young, and has experience…that cannot be said for any of the Draft prospects (well, expect that they are young)…AND Boldin is an ABSOLUTE BEAST…i would def give up a first for him…it’ll be the same as drafting a WR, but this one has NFL experience

so far i haven't really stated my opinion
just kind of throwing it out there to see what people think and playing a bit of devil’s advocate.
But I think at the end of the day, I tend to agree with you… if we could make it work contract-wise, and it would cost us our 1st, and maybe a couple of low rounders (6th and 7th this year?), I would pull the trigger.

sounds good to me
and you brought up a good point about his contract…it wouldnt be too far off from the one we would have to give to a #25 pick, and he perhaps will give us the popular “hometown discount”…so my question is, if you going to spend around the same amount of money, y not take a proven beast in Boldin, a huge piece in their SB run, instead of an unknown guy that we draft this year?

Yeah I agree with you...
If I were making the decision I would go ahead and make the deal. He fits what we need so clearly that its unquestionable. Parcells and Ireland are a different story. They don’t believe in trading a first and its hard to agrue with that because it can really set you back. If you look at our drafts after JJ left we traded many 1’s and 2nds and it really set us back. We missed on quite a few good players. He just what we need though and we should do it.

but let's say they plan
on taking a WR with that first pick…if we trade that pick for Boldin, it is essentially the same as drafting him…but of course we will have to give up more picks, but still its like drafting him with that first pick….

and instead of getting a rookie
who still has the chance to bust.. you get a proven, Pro Bowl WR, who instantly makes your offense better. There’s no 3 year development period, no waiting for him to learn routes and techniques, just plug and go.
If we can trade our 1st round pick and not much else for Boldin or Cutler, I’d pull the trigger. You’re not getting a better player than Boldin or Cutler at pick 25 unless you get lucky.
For Boldin: 1st, 6th, 2010 3rd/4th (conditional).. Does that get the job done? And would you want to make that deal?

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 2, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
AZ would take it for sure.
At 25 they can easily replace Boldin with another WR. They would want more but its unlikely that they would get more because he wants to be in Miami. But it would make total sense both financially and the fact that the could replace him. There are not too many negatives in such a deal.

Boldin
This shouldn’t even be up for discussion….Anquan Boldin is a proven work horse and extremely talented receiver. We had a receiving core that combined scored 5 touchdowns last year. I am a huge fan of Hakeem Nicks but it is not guaranteed he will even be around for us to get him and let’s not forget what happened with our last 1st round WR pick. Getting Boldin would be the best move we made in a long time and finally getting a #1 wide receiver. You give him whatever he wants to come here and you get him wearing the aqua and orange ASAP

Dolfans...
The “market” has been set: “The Lions fleeced the Cowboys, acquiring first-, third- and sixth-round choices next season for Roy Williams.” (USA Today).
Arizona will want a similar package, probably more since Detroit picks way higher. So the question is how much is Boldin worth? Sure everyone would love to trade Beck, a 5th rounder, and a seventh for him. But let reality settle in … Arizona wants much more, especially since he has a small contract. Reality peoples, reality.

Agreed,
and that’s the only reason I’m hesitant about this one. I know everyone now knows my stance on the Henne/Cutler topic. Once again, there’s a good chance we’ll have to give up a top pick or two for Boldin, unless Arizona wants to take one of our depth/mid-chart guys in return. If not a Teddy Ginn, perhaps. I mean it’s not like they need him..they have Urban and Breaston, and Fitzgerald already stretches the field in every sense of the word.
HOWEVER.
Depending on the offer, I’d heavily consider this one. We don’t have to pay nearly as much for a top WR as we would a top QB, and if Arizona was sensible with their compensation request, I’d much rather take Boldin. WR and QB do have a similar bust rate, but we have that young and talented QB to groom. Sorry Ginn, you aren’t going to be a #1 even when Henne comes in. Boldin will be that player for us.

posted this in the article above....
That deal cost the Cowboys a first-, third-, and sixth-round pick in this April’s draft, and a seventh-round pick in 2010. Not terrible when you consider only one was a first day pick.
because Boldin’s contract will have to be re-negotiated as part of the trade, it won’t be that small, and he has some leverage as to where he goes. Arizona can decide NOT to trade him, but if they do trade him (which is almost a given at this point), they may have to compromise on the compensation.

Boldin Yeas - 1st rounder No
I agree we should definitely do something to acquire Q, however I don’t see our front office giving up our first rounder for him. I also agree that you get a proven WR versus risking a pick on one, but we all know our front office (Bill) are not going to waste that pick on a receiver anyway. So I guess we will just have to wait and see – maybe we can get a pick and Q for several of ours…
