Talking Lauranitis

The other day i read an interesting article in The Sporting News about 40 yard dash times. In the article it mentioned which teams take the least value value in the 40 times, the Dolphins, Colts, and the Patriots value it the least, while Raiders, Rams, and Cheifs value it most. Looking at the way the previous drafts have gone it seems like the Fins, Colts, and Pats know whats up. This being said, James Lauranitis ran a gawd awful 40 time, and saw his draft staus drop faster than the NYSE. A few months ago, the 6 foot 2 inch slow poke was at the top of mock drafts, now, hes more than likely to be on the board when the Dolphins have their first pick. So this begs the question, do we pick this guy up?

NFL.com has this to say: Prototype size and athleticism for the inside linebacker position. ... Reads the action quickly and gets in position to make the play. ... Instinctive and rarely out of position. ... Uses his hands well to meet, greet and discard blockers. ... Best attribute might be his open-field tackling. ... Form tackler who can generate explosiveness with his hits. ... Rare instincts and underrated athleticism for coverage. ... Gets good depth on his drops and has good straight-line speed and lateral agility. ... Baits the quarterback and can break on the ball. ... Soft hands for the interception.

Negatives: Needs to continue to add strength, especially in his upper body. ... Relies on his athleticism and good technique to defeat blocks and can struggle to disengage. ... Consistent and reliable, but rarely made the game-changing play over his career. ... Experienced and productive blitzer, but doesn't show a variety of pass rush moves, relying more on athleticism, hustle and instincts.

While inside linebacker isnt our most pressing need, this man mountain of awesomness amassed 366 career tackles. In my opinion, forget the measurables, if you can play football, you can play football. Measurables only mean so much, just ask the New York Jets and Vernon Leaf...... I mean Gholston

Hmmm

“Consistent and reliable, but rarely made the game-changing play over his career”

Sounds familiar? cough Crowder cough

seems like we would just be drafting the same player

He is one of 6 possibles

The 3 USC LBs, Maybin, and, English that I think we’ll end up with in the first round with Lauranitis last on the list of the 6. I have read where he can play both inside and out shrugs

First thing i thought of too

But hey, he could be inconsistant and unreliable while still not making plays like Reggie Torbor or Akin Ayodele

The few games i have seen him play

i was impressed…..i have absolutely no idea who we should take and who the Trifecta might take, i will just smile and nod when we make our picks lol

WTF am i missing?

are these guys or are these guys not wearing shorts and muscle shirts when they run these damn times?

I have no idea what this guy did in college……but if he was a top 15 pick…and a 40 time is what is dropping him 15-20 spots…then thats just a crock.

GAMETIME SPEED…..REACTIONS….SMARTS…LEADERSHIP..thats what matters.

how fast u run on pavement…..how far u can jump from a standing still position..how high you can jump…..those things dont matter to me

Yeah But...

There is a reason he is slipping. 4.8 in college may not translate to the pros. The pro game is much quicker, much faster. AJ Hawk played the same position as this guy and ran .2 faster (4.58). He was drafted 5th in ‘06. Hawk is a nice player, but not special. If Hawk isn’t a standout playing the same position and can run, why would you want Lauranitis who can’t run?

uhh again i dont know much bout this guy....

but sometimes numbers dont tell the story…and im not selling on a LB cuz he is .2 slower…how many times do LB’s run full speed in a game? arent they tip toing around the line…or rushing the passer zig zagging?

Amen Rzayo,,

Make these kids run in pads…
A good scout will actually time them in game situations and compare vs their “street” times. Throw some pads on Bolt, let Y-Bell tackle him 2-3 times at the knees, and see how many world records he can break…

All I know is that I watched him play against Florida, LSU, and Texas

in BCS bowl games and he was slow. If he couldn’t keep up with those players, he won’t in the NFL.

BTW, Hawk is a beast and he would instantly be the best LB on our roster

I don’t know how he is just a "nice player?

He might be the best LB on the phins roster...

but that says more about the quality of LB’s that the phins have than it does about whether Hawk is a beast. Here are some stats from ’08:
Hawk: 86 tackles, 3 sacks, 0 int
Matt Roth: 53 tackles, 5 sacks, 0 int

Those to me a “nice player” numbers. Hawk played in a 4-3 and Roth in a 3-4, so they might not translate exactly. So here is some stats for a Beast for each defense:
Lance Briggs (4-3): 110 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 3 int
Lamarr Woodley (3-4): 60 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 1 int.

by ct1361 on Mar 9, 2009 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This year he had the worst year of his career

The two years prior

105 tackles, 1 sack, 1 int.
119 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 int

So if you are considering Briggs a “beast” due to the fact that he had 110 tackles, half a sack, and 3 int, A.J. Hawk must be closer to being a “beast” than he is a “nice player”.

A.J. Hawk has been and will continue to be a very very solid OLB and I wouldn’t be surprised if he snuck into a few pro-bowls either.

I’m not saying he is the greatest, but to say he is merely a “nice player” is just completely incorrect.

Id be very disappointed

if we got laurenitis, hes a poor mans zach thomas without the closing speed and play making ability, any 3 of the USC LB’s or larry english would be a better fit on a defense who needs versatility and playmaking ability

Gee...

Sounds like a young Urlacher to me. I think i would still take a chance on him. You have to remember that if he came out last year, he likely would have been a top 10 pick. Everyone was all over his salty sac, but now, they have likely cooled on him. That’s just fine with me. Let him drop to us. No worries, I’ll take him.

Now is the time- the time to rise up from the depths of Hell and stake our claim back on top of the AFC East...Look out Gaytriots here comes Jake Long and the Phins

uh sorry guys

he does not sound anything like Urlacher, he ran a 4.82 thats 4.82 i mean FOUR POINT EIGHT TWO!!!!! there were O lineman with better times,(thats not a joke either its actually true) BU was 18 pounds heavier and ran 4.59 which would be the 2cd fastest LB in this draft. Stats dont mean EVERYTHING but they do have merit. This guy will look like a three legged turtle in the NFL.

Inside LBS

only have to run fast for 15 yds. An usualy that forward momentum is distrupted by a very large force coming in the opposite direction. Lateral speed is esential.. stop looking at 40 times and pull out the numbers on the cone drills. If a LB is running 40 yds or 20 yds on a flat sprint, the play has passed him by.

Lateral speed…

Paterno, father LB, once noted, half-kidding, that he’d rather have a slow guy mess up because a faster guy would be further out of the play.- there’s some merit to that quote.

For LBs- Instinct and intelligence can add speed. Once split second of indecision negates all those fancy stats… This is why Zach was so good for so long. There’s nothing more valuable than being at the right place at the right time. If your defense is set up to allow the LB a one -on-one with the ballcarrier then your LB better be in position.

No to Lauranitis

He is an Ohio State LB. How is Katzenmoyer doing these days? AJ Hawk was supposed to be the next coming but he is average at best. I am not sold on Lauranitis. The 40 time was extrememly slow for a top notch LB. Please saty away from him BP.

I'm not a very big Laurinaitis fan

It looked like he hit his ceiling his junior year, and it’s never good to peak in college. I could be completely wrong on that, but from what I saw, it’s a possibility.

He also just seems like he would get completely overwhelmed by the speed in NFL. He played in the Big 10, a notoriously slow conference, and against the two fastest teams on the schedule last season, he had two of his worst games, posting the exact same 9tak (6solo) no impact plays line vs USC and Texas. I don’t remember how he played against UF in ‘07, but it’s a small red flag that he didn’t play well against the elite, faster teams.
