Now What?
<!--StartFragment-->
Now that Samson Satele is gone to Oakland via trade for a 6th rounder, and a switch of 4th rounder’s, the previously imminent trade between the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins for Anquan Boldin, now seems dead. Satele seemed to be the key to the deal, along with multiple draft picks, so now that he is shipped away, what is our next move?
With this move, it also deprives us of a top-tier utility lineman, who can do a little bit of everything coming off the bench. Our best player coming off the bench will be either Ike Ndukwe, or Andy Alleman.
This move also puts us back to the drawing board in looking for a lineman to add to the depth chart through the draft. We likely won’t get one in the 1st two rounds, but maybe in the 3rd or 4th.
Satele was a good lineman, and played in all 32 games in his short career. Those 32 games are almost more than now starting center Jake Grove’s 46 career games started. Grove also is a liability because of his injury prone history. If the scenario comes up in which Grove goes down with an injury, who will back him up, Joe Berger? I am not comfortable with that situation, and would highly prefer Satele. In fact, the only way that I wanted to see Satele go was in a trade for this man.
This move now deprives us of a key-trading piece in the Anquan Boldin sweepstakes. The Cardinals are in great need of a solid lineman, and Satele could have helped out in that aspect. There were rumors swirling in which Satele could have gone to Arizona with a couple of draft selections for Boldin, thus solving our need for a true versatile number one receiver.
So, this move does not really help us, because we only got a 6th round pick for a solid player that could have helped us out this season. Now, we have to draft another lineman, when we could be focusing our attention on getting a receiver, or pass rusher. So, fans, I ask you, what do we do now?

you can look at more Dolphins articles at my website: www.playoffboundsports.com
my official Dolphins blogsite is www.playoffboundsports.com. Most likely I ahve more info on my article there, so feel free to come on over. GO DOLPHINS!!!!
I am one of the few
that don’t see WR as a priority this year. Next year maybe, I think they want to see what level the 4 young guys improve to with another year. I still see defense being the majority of the draft 6 or 7 of 9 picks on D and another low round T and C/G type.
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

32 is only about a season less than 46!!! Considering the fact that Satele has only played 2 seasons, and Grove is a 5 year vet, that’s not a big difference. And yes, the evidence was all their to put together regarding the Anquan Boldin trade. All the papers were talking about it and Boldin is from Miami, the Cards need a offensive lineman. We could offer a 2nd round pick on top of Satele. Also, I had a source from Arizona say that Boldin was supposed to be in a Miami uniform by the end of last week. That obviously didn’t pan out, but that was where I was a coming from.

ok
I will trust your “source” but, about a season less is not more.

well
i’m a little surprise about the trade – but then again i’m not, since they spent the 2nd half of the season trying retreads off the street out at the spot….
but as to the depth. you may be discounting how highly the admin feels about berger?
they obviously feel strongly that he can play??? otherwise you don’t trade a cheap backup with 32 starts for essentiall the value of two 6th rounders.
plus – i know there were reports last spring the team though carey might make a better guard then tackle and they could have one of the tackles in this draft in mind to groom for the RT spot?
I have been saying this
but everyone says Carey is to highly paid for a guard spot shrugs IF a 1st round talent RT drops to us in the second round I wouldn’t be surprised if that is what they do. Other then T though I do not see a OLmen first day UNLESS a Unger falls to 56 or a Wood to 86th*shrugs*
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC
actually
i think his contract is closer to top guard money then J Lo’s.
and IIRC isn’t fanceca’s contract something like 5 year 35 mil?

Can't vote for any of those choices
because I don’t think WR is a day 1 pick if at all. 1st day is all Defense baby!
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC
not sure about that
there are some offensive positions that that’ll need help…
I wouldn’t be surprised if they take o-line with one of the 1st three picks…. i know J thomas was liked but what really is know about him other then that he beat out EK and company …. plus smiley is coming of injury.
both TE’s are up at the end of the year – IIRC
with Beck maybe being traded – they’ll need a new QB (but histroy says these guys draft a QB most years anyways)
and the 800 lbs gorrilla is the team may need a RB after this season? R&R’s contracts are coming due and the triad will need alternatives in case….
So my guess is they trade, trade and trade some more on day 1 and take the best player on the board when they can’t.

if we stay at 9 picks yes
if we acquire more picks I have said all along RB could be targeted they should sign one of the TEs and a late pick on one isn’t a bad idea BUT if you draft one this year you better trade one of the 2 TEs whose contract expires because we won’t carry 4 TEs.
As I keep saying I would be inclined to keep Beck if he doesn’t beat out Henne when time comes he’ll be a servicable back up
Parcells prides self on getting guards ect in later rounds I can not see OL being a pick day one UNLESS it is far and away the best available at one of our picks
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC
what happens if Smith falls to 25?
but as i said – my guess is they will actively trade down and for extra picks this year and next – and after that they will take the best on the board regardless of the position….
but i’ll agree with you that the focus of the draft will be defense – most likely interior – NT/ILB/Safety
but if something drops into their laps they will take it.

smith as in sean?
The highest he would go is 23 to the Pats, I don’t see smith as a top 20 talent… meaning if Parcell’s uses the 25th pick it will because he gets value at the spot and is on his small board of who to take at 25. In truth I could see them drafting Barwin at 25 before Smith shrugs
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC
nope
should have know better using SMITH, what there are only 31 players named who will be taken in the first round
no i was throwing andre out there since he seems to have ticked off a ton of people in football the last month or so…
by W NY Fins Fan on Mar 24, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Andre won't fall that far
and if he does look for a trade down to someone how needs an T BUT I personally would consider it mightily moving Carey to guard :)
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC
well - i know
the press likes to over due things – but there has been some reports that he somehow managed to lazy himself possibly out of the first round….
and there are always players who unexpectedly (which is my point) fall to the twenties …. say a quinn or a rogers…

WORKOUT REGIMENT
Ok, maybe Grove is a liability in our eyes but the trifecta probably know that he did not go through the proper pre-season workout regiment. lets keep in mind that we barely suffered any real injuries. And I think that all thanks to the conditioning that the Trifecta make these guys go through. Jason Taylor was dancing up a storm just to get hurt in Washinton. I honestly believe that Bill and Tony will sit tis guy down and tell him what his weaknesses are, what they expect during the preseason and most importantly what he needs to work on. You gotta think, Oakland is pretty dysfunctional and they had a lot on their mind other than making sure their guys were doing what they were supposed to do in order to take themselves to the next level.
Also
The Trifecta i think will focus more on the trenches and defense in the first two rounds. The WR position can be filled in the 3rd. Easy. I mean this draft class is pretty thick when it comes to the wideout. So I am thinking even maybe with our 4th round pick now that we traded with Oakland we will probably take a WR in that spot. They will more than likely sign both TEs because they will come cheap. I mean they played great for us but what can they expect? They are no Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzales. R and R express is coming up on new contract negotiations, and Ronnie will want serious dough, plus I am sure if he is ale to rush for 1000 yards (considering the defenses we play this year) he will want primo dough. i can see them franchising him or signing him long term in the middle of the year before t gets crazy. Ricky, he may get released unless he plays for us an slightly above the minimum. Besides doesnt he still owe us money for “retiring”? The 1st round willsee us getting an OLB. Porter is getting replaced eventually, 2nd round will see us getting a CB and S. Both are aging and we need future replacements trained now, 3rd will see us getting another DE or OL. 4th wil be the round we get a guy to be opposite Ted Ginn (unless we trade him for a 2nd rounder which I can happening).

I'm getting sick
of reading the opinion that swapping picks in the 4th round is nothing, or that we got short-changed in this deal. Completely ignoring the fact that we now have a pick in the sixth round, moving from 25/26 to 8 is half a round. Gives us the opportunity to take one of the third round players who fell for whatever reason. Not to mention, now that we have that additional 6th-round pick back, we can package that or one of our remaining 7s to either move up or gain even more picks on draft day or beforehand.
You know with Bill Parcells that this trade wasn’t Samson Satele for a 6th and a 4th-round swap. It was Samson Satele for a series of small yet significant trades that net us a player who will make a big impact. You all constantly mention how Satele is the result of trading for Welker..well, think of it this way: a player whom this regime doesn’t even like anymore will ultimately net us a starter or two who will impact our team just this coming season. Worst case scenario: he nets us two players worth of solid depth.
I read complaints that we’re ridding ourselves of depth through this trade..what good is depth if our front office doesn’t feel he can even start on our team? I loved this trade and would deal Satele for what seem like marginal picks to some of us any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Why? Because this time next year we’ll be reminding ourselves why we love and trust these three guys so much, and a good chunk of that will come from this deal.
For the most part I agree
I do agree that the decision makers for whatever reason didn’t like Satele. I personally liked him yes I know the bigger NTs handled him BUT how much of that was the injury and having 2 backups beside him? At his age and having 2 yrs out of 2 yrs starting experience WITH two different OL coaches made him valuable though I do trust the front office and we still have depth on the OL in fact there will be a couple OLmen cut next year that we like. We have Berger, Aliman(has sarting experience), Murphy(who they traded up for), Ndukwe(has starting exp), and we will draft a T for backup depth. Thats 10 OLmen which is all we will carry(counting 5 starters). I just believe you need a guy like Satele(versatal and a capable starter at multible places) is a valuable piece to a long standing contender. And since the FO didn’t think(like I thought) Satele was that “6th” OLman then maybe Berger is or they acquire that type guy eventually.
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC
agree with this
plus – dave – i think i’ve been pretty clear that this trade was essential the value of two 6th rounders

I would have been more happy if we Just got Oaklands 4th rounder instead or the swap
but I see us drafting a lineman it all depends on who’s there I say Eric Wood would be a good third round choice to fill Samsons spot
Ahhhh Ta Ta Ta Ta Bye Bye Foy518
Guys, Satale is just not a good fit...
He worked well for a while but definitely not the long term fit that we wanted. It’s just like if Matty went into Victoria Secret to get a job, they would tell him he’s not a good fit. It happens. They may be passing up a good talent in some eyes, but all in all not a good fit.
25th pick - LB Clint Sintim
44th pick - CB Sean Smith
56th pick - QB Pat White
