Why we might not draft WR & OLB in the first day

WR

This is the simple decision, the off season has been about how we need a legitimate no 1 receiver and some people think we'll get it through the draft. The main problem with this logic is that towards the beginning of the off season the consensus was that we needed to trade for a leader of the WR corps somebody who has been there done that and can help the very young WR we already have. Drafting a WR won't fill that need, we have four good young WR's in Camarillo, Bess, Ginn & London. 2 are coming into that magical third season and the other two are coming into the second season. The only real need we have that usurps other requirements is the need for a veteran to be the older wiser and stable influence on the others. I think that Parcells will do what he did last year and look at late round picks or Free Agents after the draft.

OLB, unless we pick up a DE/OLB to fit into the rotation, we have already picked up two very good prospects in the off season with Cameron Wake and Eric Walden. Plus we already have Charlie Anderson, Quentin Moses and Matt Roth who have already had one season learning the defensive scheme. So I think this is an area that we already have covered.

Personnally I think we'll pick up a DB or MLB, unless someone absolutely stellar drops and if there is nobody of the right value in one of those positions, expect us to trade down to pick up more drafts later. Or I think that this is one year that we might see us trade up to pick up one of those propsects.

So what do you think, am I talking rubbish from the other side of the pond, or do I have a point?

you have a point

…i wouldn’t be surprised if we drafted one or two interior offensive linemen either…

mate

I will be very disappointed if we draft a WR before rd 5. CB, DT, OG, LB all need to be addressed first. i don’t care what order as long as our first 3 picks are one of the above positions I will be happy and a self proclaimed prophet. LOL

where i mentioned LB’s let me specify OLB and or ILB are still needs for our defense, the ILB corp still hasn’t changed from last year (crowder still sucks and has proved he needs to be replaced or the #2 ILB)

A feeding frenzy is about to take place in the dirty south

If we don't trade Joey Porter, then we are not desperate for an OLB...

and have the luxury to let the draft come to us.
I do see a possible pick up of a versatile LB who could play insider or out.
Right now the only “desperate” position is CornerBack, so I hope they go CB with the #1, say like, Sean Smith…

Anybody on the planet think that Michael Crabtree could plummet in the draft?

He’s much shorter than anticipated, much slower, comes from a “system” where stats are inflated, and has injury issues.
I see Michael Crabtree = Anquan Bolden with more fanfare.
If someone like him fell in the draft to the second round, the Trifecta would jump on him.

Crabtree is going to be a star and every GM knows that

I personally doubt we draft a WR

on the first day unless something strange happens like a Nicks or Britt drops into the late second round or Maclin or Crabtree is there at 25 and I don’t see either happening.

OLB – I see this as a very likely pick at 25 because Porter is needed to be replaced and Roth though I like him isn’t going to be a terror/stud type OLB and a 3/4 defense needs a terror. I could see IF draft fell properly 2 actually being taken. I can especially see 2 LBs taken on first day inside and outside.

If say at 25 a Mathews was our pick and we happened to fall into a Barwin/Sintim/Kruger at 56 I very well could see a Porter trade after preseason game 2 IF the staff thought they had their “guys”. I am very much a trade a year early then wait a year late type of guy(ala JT) and it would give us at minimum another 2nd round pick for Draft #3 of the regime.

Simularly with all the talk on other threads of get Henne into the starters role IF after camp and 2 preseason games if Henne and/or Beck were thought to be ready to take on the starters job and backup filled capablly by the other(Beck) I would again one year early trade Penne.

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia

I have commented in other posts that I think MLB is a bigger need than OLB.

IMO, the phins did not get enough big / impact plays out of that position. That is why I want the phins to trade up and get a playmaker in the middle like Maualuga. He is a beast and will help the run and pass defense.

If they shore up the run defense, the safeties can then help the CB’s in pass coverage. You leave the CB’s on an island when you have to commit the safeties to stopping the run game.

In a 3/4 is there such a thing as MLB?

I too love Mauluga though I am not of mind of trading an additional 2nd rounder to go get him. I think ILB is a true point of need to go along side Crowder but I also think OLB with Porter’s imminent departure is a need… the question is IF you don’t get Porter’s replacement this draft will you be able to in next years draft and have him as a rookie be who you need him to be? This years, IMO, has a number of potential stars at OLB and is deeper then most years shrugs

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest

I meant ILB..

I just remember being at the playoff game and watching how the phins defense reacted to the running game of Baltimore. Our ILB didn’t make one memorable play in that game. And I saw how the safeties kept getting closer to the LOS with each passing possession because it became apparent that the front 7 couldn’t stop the run.

I also think that the draft is deep in OLB’s. So much so that I think there will be quality left at 44, possibly Sintim. That is why I want a MLB at 25 or possibly trading up. I want star / impact players and if that means giving up 56 or 87 to do that, I am all for it.

Maybe there will be run on WR in the first 20 picks

thereby letting MauMau slip to 18. It may not cost too much to move up to 18 and then we can still get a good CB at 44. The rest of the draft would be gravy. Maybe find a sleeper in the 3rd or 4th to help out Ferguson and the newby at NT. There seems to be lots of talented players in this draft unfortunately the other teams will be getting better also. Except for Dallas that is….

I've seen Maualuga anywhere from 12 to 20..

Like you, if he gets into the late teens, make a move up and draft him. There should also be some willing partners to trade with. I am thinking SD at 16 and the bears at 18.

I'm not sure

if Sean Smith would drop to 44, but getting MauMau and Sean Smith, that would be mighty fine…

Cushing, Mauluga, and Matthews will be gone by 25...

sorry to say, but unless the other 12 3-4 defenses ahead of us decide to make stupid decisions, I say they will be gone…

25th pick - LB Clint Sintim
44th pick - CB Sean Smith
56th pick - QB Pat White

if that's true..........that's really ok........

Just one man's opinion.....

The defending AFC Champions Miami Dolphins chose Marino with the 27th pick in the NFL draft.....

remember

all 12 won’t be taking LB’s. Hell, half of them probably won’t even pick a defensive player. And Maualuga might be the 3rd or 4th LB off the board (if Orakpo and Brown get drafted as Rush LB’s.)
