Asleep at the wheel? Not quite

It's amazing how quickly we forget.

We forget how this front office rebuilds teams.  With all this big money being tossed around by other NFL teams, this regime stood pat.  They didn't overspend during the first weekend of free agency.  They didn't let "the market" dictate how much they would or should spend on players.

And we should have expected this.  After all, Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland really didn't go crazy spending money in free agency last offseason, either.  They made one moderately big signing (Justin Smiley) and then really spent the rest of free agency trying to find cheap talent that could upgrade the bottom third of the roster by signing numerous small contracts.  Perhaps that's why many Dolphin fans were probably hoping for more than just two new Dolphins this past weekend.  And that's probably why some Dolphin fans were disappointed this past weekend.

But let's be honest for a second - Parcells and Ireland know what they are doing.  They aren't going to overspend in free agency like many teams do.  And why should they?  The last 3 Super Bowl champion teams - the Steelers, Giants, and Colts - were all teams that were mainly built the old-fashioned way - through the draft.  So while the Jets and the Redskins spend big money on free agents - as they've done in the past - just think about how far all that spending has acutally gotten those two franchises.

I'm not going to lie, though.  Like any of you, I was hoping for that one big-ticket free agent acquisition.  But spending more on a center than on your right tackle is just crazy.  That's what it would have cost the Dolphins to sign Jason Brown - who signed a deal that pays an average of $7.5 million per year and guarantees him $20 million over 5 years.  Vernon Carey, on the other hand, will make just $7 million per year and only $15 million is guaranteed over 6 years.  Simply not worth it - and the Dolphins knew that.

But the first weekend of free agency will be more known for the "lesser" players who got overpaid.  Defensive end Antonio Smith - a player who averages just 3.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss over his 4 year career - got a 5 year, $35 million deal from the Texans.  Another defensive lineman, Rocky Bernard, got a 4 year, $16 million deal from the Giants despite turning 30 soon and avaraging just 42 tackles and 4 sacks over his last 3 seasons.  But the most ridiculous deal so far was the Ravens' decision to give Domonique Foxworth a 4 year, $27.2 million deal with $16.5 million of it guaranteed.  If you've ever seen him play, you'd know that he's just not a very good cornerback - and his 4 career interceptions prove that he's not a playmaker, either.  But apparently he's worth nearly $7 million in this ridiculous free agenct market.

And that is why what the Dolphins have done is so smart - though some fans seem disappointed or angry.  Rather than spend big money on other team's free agents, they spent a majority of their money on their own players - allowing them to grow within a system that is familiar to them and developing them from within.  You'll remember that I was frustrated over a week ago because I thought that this front office was being too stubborn with their own free agents and I was worried that they would let their own guys walk.  Instead, Parcells and Ireland did just the opposite - signing Vernon Carey, Channing Crowder, and Yeremiah Bell - and prevented themselves from creating any more holes than this team already has.

Star-divide

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Dolphins struck on Thursday with their one big free agency acquisition - signing safety Gibril Wilson to a $5 year, $27.5 million deal - a deal that includes less guaranteed money and less per year than the deal the Ravens signed Foxworth to.  Wilson's signing was quickly followed by Bell's re-signing.  And just like that, the Dolphins not only prevented the creation of another hole, but also instantly upgraded the safety position from a season ago.

And yet, some Dolphin fans still aren't satisfied.  They would rather this front office be involved in every bidding war for every over-priced free agent than having them just sit back, wait to see hold the market unfolds, keep their cap space, and see what opportunities may present themselves further down the road.  But that's not how this front office operates.  They don't overspend on overvalued free agents.  That's how you become the Washington Redskins.

These same Dolphin fans want to point to the cornerback position.  They want to talk about how it would have only cost Miami $5 million per year to bring back the recently departed Andre Goodman.  But let's be honest - he's not worth that kind of money.  Sure - I like him and I appreciate all that he did for this football team last season.  He provided memories that will last a lifetime.  But that doesn't mean we should overlook the fact that he's going to be 31 years old before the season and has just one good season under his belt.  That one good season should not translate into a 5 year contract that pays him an average of $3 million more per year than he made in 2008.  After all, how many cornerbacks are in this league that are reliable corners worth $5 million per year at the age of 33?  Sorry - but five years is just too long of a commitment.

And while some Dolphin fans will sit here and think that the Goodman situation was an example of this front office being stingy - I look at it as our front office being smart.

Building through the draft.  That's what this front office believes in.  And that's what everyone needs to accept.  This will not be a franchise that simply throws money at their problems in hopes of solving them.

So deal with that - and trust the men who are captaining this ship.  They know what they're doing.

i've been saying for a few days now

that this FA period has been much better then expected. great offseason so far….

now two niggles….

on goodman

But that doesn’t mean we should overlook the fact that he’s going to be 31 years old before the season and has just one good season under his belt.

he had 2 good seasons for the fins – his first one under Saban was a solid workman year and 2 years ago when he battle injuries he pretty much stunk…. and his career in detroit was spotted as well – so i can see denver signing him and miami letting him go….

and two – since you brought it up

The last 3 Super Bowl champion teams – the Steelers, Giants, and Colts – were all teams that were mainly built the old-fashioned way – through the draft

what did these 3 super bowl winning teams have in common??? they started their superbowl winning QB’s as rookies?

interesting point

on rookie qb’s……..but we will just have to wait on Henne.

the last part

i think is pretty irrelevant to their super bowl success.

i didnt mean for it to be aggressive

but look at tom brady. arguably the best QB of this decade. and he spent quite some time riding the pine.

pretty big assumption

the reality us he did play and play well…. and better then bledsoe

all of this as a 2nd year qb

It’s hard to say which is cause and which is effect in those cases, Westy. Did those 3 become top-notch QBs (and win Super Bowls) because they started their rookie years? Or did they start their rookie years (and win Super Bowls) because they were already extremely talented QBs?

NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL

Peyton Manning- It made no difference at all in his case. He was already a consolidated star in the league when he won his SB. If anything, starting his rookie year probably cut his life short a good 8 years to say the least.

Roethlisburger and Manning- No difference at all. Those 2 championships were won by supreme, but truly supreme defenses. Ben sucked big time against the seahawks, having 2 interceptions and freaking 9 completions, a la trent dilfer per se. And eli, well, he had a lucky break in that historic pass and kept the giants in the game, however, that game was 99% giants defense.

So the question is , did they win because they started their rookie year?? Hello no. Did starting their rookie year have a positive impact in their careers?? Hell yes

my theory is

franchise QB’s are franchise QB’s – you don’t develop them, you just get enough play time/experience for them to dominate…

so what did those teams do – they got their franchise QB – they put them in ASAP and built their team around their young QB…

the good ones will learn and develop and the crappy ones will fail…. but you don’t ever see franchises with caretaker QBs succeed from year to year, yes you may have a good year or two, but the reality is the team is made ‘around’ the QB, you just don’t fit one into a developed team….

kind of like minnesota right now… they are grasping at air because they never developed a QB to build a team around and it’s hard to have a young guy come in and take over there and have ‘respect’ while he gains experience.

Steelers only started Ben b/c of Maddox’s injury and it was during the season
Eli didn’t start from the get-go…Kurt Warner was the starter
Peyton was the only true legit rookie starter

by Dolfan18 on Mar 2, 2009 4:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

sheesh

your missing the point…

they all were established as the undisputed starter as rookies… p manning 16 gs, big ben 13 gs, E manning 7?gs

ota as sophs? yup? did the teams draft players with the rooks skill sets in mind yup…

Resigning our big three was a good start to the offseason

I would have been really disappointed if we hadn’t resigned Bell and Carey, Crowder was a bonus. Ideally we could sign a couple of value guys to provide a bit of depth, perhaps start, in the secondary and in the linebacking corps. Center, cornerback, and recievers can all be addressed in the draft.
I agree, we shouldn’t overspend (see ernest wilford).
Snyder is a moron.

What starts here changes the world.

Missed one.
their one big free agency acquisition – signing safety Gibril Wilson to a $5 year, $27.5 million deal

While technically true, I think Wilson is really the second. Cameron Wake was the first.

by urbino on Mar 2, 2009 1:06 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nah, I don't know anything much about him.

I’m just saying he was a big signing. Lots of teams were after him, we gave him a handsome contract to get him here, it was all in the papers, etc. It was a fairly big deal. So it seems to me we’ve made two big acquisitions.

You know?

I am kinda sold on the guy…if even half of his CFL production comes to Miami he will be a fantastic pick up for us. This guy was DOMINANT in the CFL and yeah I know that the compition and skill level are different but hell its still an amazing thing to be that beastly…I dearly hope that he produces for us…..linebacker U…not a bad pick up at all!

Here here

And this regime will find at least four starters in this draft.

Said by Sparano himself

http://www.miamidolphins.com/newsite/aquavision/aquavision.asp?category=1&mediaid=41504

if you listen to this interview that was taped at combine, Tony explains that they are not going to be after w/ the marquee guys, they’re looking for guys that “fit” what their doing. He said they would probably not be as active this year in FA unless certain players don’t get franchised. Stressed building through the draft as we already know..

by YatilGinnJr on Mar 2, 2009 3:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Something about hearing Sparano's words again...

has a calming effect. I feel like I’m being rocked asleep and that everything is going to be okay. Not to say I want Sparano rocking me to sleep or anything….but I like what we’ve done this FA so far. Talk to an eagles fan, ask them how their FA is going.

25th pick - C Alex Mack
44th pick - CB Sean Smith
56th pick - WR Derrick Williams

well said....

I think we all would have been almost shocked to see the phins give goody a 5yr extension despite how well he played this year. Jason allen starting corner this year???

Why not Houshmanzadeh?

Apparently we don’t want Coles because he’s not the primo #1 receiver that we need, so why no talk about Houshmanzadeh? The guy is a rock star in his prime!

by ZIM on Mar 2, 2009 9:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say Housh is in his prime

He’s actually 3 months older than Coles. Housh will be 32 in September. And he’s never proven that he could be a #1 receiver. He’s always had Chad Johnson on the other side of him.

Heya Matty, i feel like i'm missing something

i had the feeling after talking about it in my post that the large majority of fans here were not at all disappointed… indeed most were pretty satisfied with the way the front office was handling FA. But i was gone over the weekend, so can you fill me in? did you get a lot of static from guys about the trifecta not doing their jobs or is this something that was hitting the national media somewhere?
good post, and well said. i am just curious to know what prompted it. =)

Excellent post

Sporano told us much though didn’t he. And Tuna has always been like that hasn’t he.
We should all take a page from Matty’s book, (or post rather) and temper our enthusiasm for the big splash and let cooler heads prevail. And prevail we shall with smart football people, making smart football moves, ensuring a respectable franchise for years to come.

I love this FO

They may not get the sexy FA but they know how too put a team together. I am waiting to see what they will do with the CB. IMO that was a weak area last yr along with the FS position. Now that we have Wilson, we have two Safties who can hit and cover. Let’s see what they do at CB.

Hoping we draft a Big-Tuff Receiver

There are plenty GOOD receivers available this draft….we need a Big/Tuff receiver that always comes down w/ the ball…we have the speedy one already (Ginn).

by MassFinFan65 on Mar 2, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Great read Matty....

and I agree. We just need to be patient and let this rebuild complete itself. They are doing it smart and for the long term. I’m glad we aren’t just making a run at the super bowl only to rebuild all over again because of pricey FA’s, but instead we are building a franchise to make multiple runs for years to come. I’ve said it before, soon we’ll be reloading, not rebuilding.
