playoffs this season might be wishful thinking

I am a huge dolphins fan and i go into every season hoping for some postseason games and last season was a wonderful surprise.

however i think that it might have gotten some of us thinking we were better then we actually are. this season is going to be a struggle to get to the playoffs and as im looking at this offseason it seems hopeful to even think about a repeat of last season.

for one thing our schedule is significantly harder and juts getting through our new and improved rivals is going to be tough. let alone the several teams we will face that played in the postseason in the nfc. im excited to see some really good teams roll through and its going to be a fun season to watch this young team get better and better.

but with brady coming back, a harder schedule and jason taylor looking like he might go to the pats its gonna be an uphill battle to just compete in the afc east. im excitedto watch the young talent we have (especially bess) however i know we may look alot closer to our rebuilding persona then we did last season.

This is known........

schedule is tougher…wont sneak up on people…all that.

everything says we will take a step back..to take 3 forward in 2010.

My thinking is our goal is playoffs…doesnt mean we need to win the divison….even the wild card…stay in the show come postseason….and then you have ANOTHER DRAFT!

if i had a gun to my head and was forced to predict….i think Wildcard is realistic….Divison if things fall in place like last year.

Know whats funny? allot of things i read agree……………..JETS IN LAST!

suck it Joe Namath!! errrr actually…..i mean Hows that taste Broadway!!??

I agree with you RZ

And with you FINland. I don’t think we HAVE to make the playoff this year. Just continue to get better and compete. The Patriots are going to be up on their game with Brady back and the Bills are TRYING to become a decent team (I think the move to LA might hurt them, but what do I know ;)). I think the Jets are a couple of years away from figuring it out.

The schedule is going to be rough. No doubt about that.

But, as long as we compete, and we grow, I’m still happy.

Parcells agrees with you.

Not too long ago, he was quoted, I believe during an ESPN interview, that we will field a better team this year, but the record may not reflect it.

And not mentioning the schedule, there are still a few obstacles standing in the way of the playoffs. The roster is still churning, and we will have 2 new pieces on the OL again, possibly 3 (Grove, Thomas hopefully makes it out of the first game, and it could be 3 if Smiley is unable to return). There will be more rookies being broken in at bigtime spots, and, arguably, our 2 best defensive players are another year closer to retirement (Porter and Ferguson).

But honestly, I would love to be 8-8 or 9-7 and contend for a wildcard. As long as I see the talent level raised and the team continue on the path laid last season, I’m happy.

by Little Nicky 21 on Mar 19, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

8-8 won't get you

a wildcard in the AFC – hasn’t for a while…. the NFC overall is just too weak and thats before you factor in the West(s).

I mean you can pretty much pen in INDY, NE, Pitt for 11 wins without playing a game….
and that’s before you mix in Miami, J-hole, Tenn, Bmore, SD, & Houston.
my guess is 10 wins doesn’t get a team in and miami, unless there is a change a QB won’t win 8.

'09 is an important year regardless of the record

and the playoffs. The phins need to find more playmakers, especially on defense. I can live with having a worse record as long as we are able to identify the players that we want to keep to make a superbowl run in ’10 or ’11.

by ct1361 on Mar 19, 2009 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

playmakers on defense!!!!

miami needs to find a franchise QB – what has held the team back for the last decade – 13 friggin caretakers and all of them average QB at best.

this!!!!

In fact if we are not going to make the playoffs AND have a chance to do something in it then 1 and 15 baby! I’ll add some players, get to know team better, get experience for guys that need it and we are not sure of their ceilings and again get a top of draft pick :)

But I doubt the teams that were good last year on our schedule well all be as good. The schedule isn’t as tough as it says on paper. We have solid players in some key positions. Another draft picking up a couple more PLAYERS at key positions and compitent special teamers/backups and we will be fine and right on tract

is far and away the best qb we have had since DM. he played very well last season we dont go anywhere last season without him. he had a rough game in the playoffs but so did all the qbs against that defense. top tier or not the ravens made quarterbacks look stupid the only time quarterbakcs had a shot against the ravens was when the running game got going. which we did not in that particular game. however i stand by cp. henne can ride pine as long as hes standing strong.

PLAYOFFS

Lets be honest … the playoffs any season is a GREAT season. Sometimes you need things to go the right way for you to even make it, last season being a great example of that. Teams like the Steelers, Colts and Pats have been very lucky .. you can’t assume to make the them every year, just ask Pats and Jags fans.

I guess my thoughts about every season has take it game by game and don’t expect 8-8, 9-7 or better or worse.

You never know what each team will be when you play them regardless of the previous season because to many things happen for instance ..
How good will TB be with a new coach and after all the turnover?
How good will TEN be without Haynsworth?
How good will ATL D be without brooking and Foxsworth?

These are just some of the Q’s you can ask about our tough schedule … last season is last season .. time to move on and WAIT … if we make it great if not I’m sure we will be better the next season

Mark my words…oneday these same CP10 bashers will be wishing we had him back when he is gone. Maybe not now…but if Henne is even average these same people will be beating off to the day where a QB didnt make dumb mistakes and throw away a game. We won like 6 games by less than 7 pts……i guara`ntee…even if Henne is the real deal….we woulda lost 4 of those because a rookie is always gonna make a rookie mistake.

Exactly everyone talks junk about Penny's arm and how Henne and Ginn will connect alot better Blah Blah Blah

but what some people fail to see is that leadership is the number one quality in a quarter back and Penny has just about every ounce of it,and also being the smart player he is I think he wants to move the chains wear down d’s and not throw a deep ball because of the chance of it being picked off, also Pennys numbers were some of the best he has ever put up his td production could have been better if we had thta one big physical wide out THANKS Wilford,so if you want to have a qb who is flashy and racks up passing yards whatever thats fine I would rather have one that can win games.

CP10 supporters KNOW he isnt the future…..we KNOW he isnt a gun slinger you need for a dynasty….

But he is damn better than what we have had…..and im not ready to throw that away before im sure Henne is a superstar in the making. As of now people are just plain crazy to think Henne has shown enough to start. He has 1 drive to his credit in the NFL……he wasnt great in college…so why should we hand him the job when someone else won 11 games doing it last yr.

And hear the same argument about Gus Frerotte.

and Brian Griese, and all the other career back-ups in the league. Good solid veteran QB’s who can come in a win games when needed in a short period of time, but EVERY team that they play on the coaching staff is trying to upgrade the position. Because they are NOT the future. Pennington falls into that category, you said it yourself. So if the phins are building for the future, and Pennington is not part of it, then why play him? You just rebutted your own arguement.

What Im saying is he won us 11 games…..with basically jackshit on offense other than a trick play we perfected. I understand Henne needs to play and see what he has at some point……but why now? Let the season play out…..give us a chance to do well…..and if it isnt happeneing then see what Henne has.

If you think CP10 is in the same class as Griese and Frerotte then you musta eaten some brown acid kid.

Pennington

has a 44-34 starting QB record and no one here is going to tell me how great the jets teams were when he played for them, Highest pass comp % for a career, is in the top 5 career QB rating of 90.6 rating(granted ppl say it is a poor system BUT those in the game must see some importance to it, 101 tds to 62 ints, 2 time Comebackplayer of yr award winner, and last yrs MVP runnerup. He is NO Brian Griese/Ferotte. There has been worse QBs that have led their team to a superbowl win(Dilfer ect) He has earned the right to be #1 on depth chart period and IF Henne is looked at as a better option to win you bet Sparano’s job he’ll be the starter.

For you a Rzayo..

then why did the jets give up on him? Why did they want Clemens to be the starter last year before they got Favre? And don’t give that S&*T about all Jets moves are stupid.

I am not desputing the stats or what he did last year. All I am saying is that no one in any FO in the league wanted to give him a chance to be the starting QB for their team when he became a FA. None. With all the crappy starting QB’s in the league and asking for rock bottom money, none would make a play for him.

Just one question and I will let this drop, because you guys are far smarter than me, I admit it. When the phins become a superbowl caliber team in a couple of years, who will be the QB? You answer that one question with a thoughtful explaination.

by ct1361 on Mar 20, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Someone

as good or better then D.Woodley who led this team to the superbowl! My guess would be Henne hell no one knows for sure that Beck isn’t a SP winning calibar QB. Is it a surething no? And one of the best football minds of the modern era thinks Henne very well could be that guy, back to the original post I would inquire about Cutler but would not mortgage the future for him. Cutler has a losing career record and do you think he would have led this team last yr to a better mark or even equal mark then 11-5 that Penne did? Cutler is talented true BUT as has been demonstrated this off-season his head isn’t the best. He forsaked his teammates, bailed on them because why? his feelings were hurt? Come on it is a business and every QB including maybe the greatest in Marino has had his name thrown around in trade talks.

If Denver wants to take one of our QBs and a 1st I would bring in Cutler and tell him whats up and if he can deal with the realities of the situation.

Thank You for a thoughtful response...

D. Woodley was a superbowl starting QB. And if I remember correctly inside of 2 years he lost his starting job to a rookie named Dan Marino.

The point that I was trying to make was that you cannot call your team a superbowl contender if you don’t know who the starting QB is going to be. Pete Prisco on CBSSports.com said the phins are going to make a super run in ’10. How can you make that statement without knowing who is going to be playing the most important position.

Oh, by the way. Griese is 45-38 as a starter and Frerotte is 45-47.

by ct1361 on Mar 20, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

As is every professional sporting team

you are judged on your W-L record. I am the type of loyal fan that I would rather trade a guy 1 yr early then 1 yr late that said IF the FO thinks Henne is ready after camp and X# of pre-season games I am all for trading Penne(ala JT). I just cannot for the life of me see Sparano not starting Henne if he is the better QB you likes his job to much. More QBs have been ruined russing their starting ascention then not and Penne is a good guy to sit behind for 2 yrs(if more then 1 is what FO thinks will be to his advantage) because he is a leader, smart, hard worker, professional. You know Irland and part of Bill’s legacy is going to be based on how Henne does considering their first decision was to bypass Ryan and get Henne later IF last yr is an indicator of his career. So I am going to go out on a limb and say that Henne’s proper handling is one of if not the foremost thing on the FO’s “Dolphin Mind”

Despite recovering, the Jet’s didn’t want to take that risk. That’s understood…Bill probably swept him up before other teams could have their doctors work him out.

I feel sorry for some of you......

you just cant enjoy a damn good thing can you?

hahaha why did the Jets cut him? BRETT FAVRE! they got sucked into the NY frontpage….add any past pro bowler we can get disease. If I have to explain to you that the Jets made a MAJOR mistake by releasing CP10 for Favre….then well thats ur problem

Who will be our QB when we make the super bowl? Def not CP10….cuz honestly we are still 3-5 years from that….and thats EXACTLY why you dont just throw him out there. You are the same people who called for John Beck to start in 2007….and then you went “Ohhhhhhhhhh yea no…..not good”. We have a LUXURY here….I heard yesterday that CP10 is the best teacher at QB OF ALL TIME…and the same report said noone has seen a guy take teaching and soak it up like Henne……so you think he has it now? He cant learn more? everyday CP10 is teaching him….he gets better. I promise you the man ur hating on is the man that just made Henne 2 years further along than he would be.

We wont agree here….but ill let u know what I WOULD DO…

open competition…if Henne wins it….then that means he is a stud.

If CP10 is still clearly giving u the best chance to win then you keep him in and see where the season takes you. Im not saying Henne should never play….i think he shoulda played more last season honestly….i just dont see the rush.

If you think our CB’s and WR’s are Super Bowl worthy within 3 years….ur wrong. so we have time….let the kid friggin learn!

Dont crown the guy either…im not falling into the Beck trap allot of you fell in….Henne is too skille dand too valuable to us for us to throw him into the fire vs a great 1st place schedule. Not to mention if Henne isnt on the same page…he prevents others from getting better (i.e Ginn)

Rzayo, we must have different memories.

What I remember is that in 2007 a healthy Penne was benched for Clemens on the NYJ. I also remember going into training camp last year, Penne was listed as #2 on the Jets depth chart behind Clemens when he got cut.

I am all for an open competition at QB, but Sparano has already said that Penne is the starting QB, so that ain’t happening.

On to your last paragraph, if Henne is so skilled and too valuable to throw into the fire against a 1st place schedule, then what are you telling the kid? We like your talent but you can’t compete against the best in the league? As a competitor I would think Henne would welcome the chance. And the whole point of playing him is so that he gets on the same page as Ginn. Practice is one thing, game speed is a whole other animal. As a coach, you need to see how a player reacts in game situations, when real bullets are flying. That way you can tell the great practice players from the imposters. I have seen dozens of players who couldn’t play in games but would dazzle you in practice.

Stats don't really mean anything

If you go back a couple of years to the days of Jay Fieldler his stats showed that he was the second most active winning QB in the league only behind Kurt warner. I am not arguing for of against PEnne Because if tony thinks that henne of beck should be starting then i am 100% behind them same goes for if they stick with penne

good god when we had these two teams averaged only 165 yards passing against us our secondary was sick but then again our defense as a whole was good in those days Will Allen scares me and after that our best guy is Jason Allen come on,Ill give Jason Allen some credit he did hold his own against Moss the first game and I think he covered Brandon Marshall in the Denver game but truth be told we have neither a shutdown or playmaker at the corner position.

seriously...

Though I am a member of the Glass Half-Empty Club, half of the time I am very optimistic…. huh?
Anyway… Every year we see the superbowl odds posted as early as NOW, and we begin to determine strength of schedule as soon as the schedules are released.

Why then, at the end of every year, we have a flip flop in the pre-season favorites… Teams like Baltimore, Arizona, Atlanta, Miami… yada yada…

In a sadistic way, I kind of like the “TOUGH” shedule:
1) you know where you stand
2) most of the pre-season favorites fall apart
3) confidence- If we can win those 17-13 games like we did last year against better competition, we’ll only get stronger as the year progresses.

IMO we were really an 8-8, 9-7 team last year that ended up 11-5.
This year we should be a 9-7, 10-6 team that should be exactly that. Our competition should only get easier- it can’t get tougher.

Last yr is Last yr

everyone starts at 0-0, Each team in our Division will look different. I like our chances in our division. Pats are good but weak on Defense, If our Defense is improved and can get a few stops against there Offense we can split with them again. We should be able to sweep the Jets, they have no QB……..put 8 in the box and make them beat you in the air. I’ll take my chances with there one good WR and no QB. add to that a first yr HC with the same OC. Buffalo will not be any better until they find a real coach. This guy lost at least 3 games by himself……..we sweep them. That’s 5 wins with 11 to play, if we can win 6 of the 11 we have 11 wins and a chance at winning the Division or wildcard. Wildcard maybe hard to get with Tenn, Indy, Pitt, I think Balt drops off and Jacksonville will be better.

If we win 11 games and miss the playoffs I might be able to look at the season and say it went well. It all depends on how we finish the season. If we finish like we did last yr I would be ok with that. Last yr we took care of business, hopefully that is how this team will play at the end of every yr.

I'm going to

Enjoy each game every Sunday. Go into with a positive outlook and a hope for the best mentality. I understand that this is year 2 of a major overhaul for the Dolphins but that won’t stop me from believing in the “what if” aspect of the game. Until there is no shot at the playoffs, or until they get knocked out of the playoffs will I feel any different. One game at a time, for the fun of it.

dude

cp10 was runner up for mvp. with all the needs we have and all the building we are doing why is it even a question. why do we bring out this arguement at every turn. i mean when we were down and had to win every game to get to the playoffs all the doubters were screaming henne. after the cardinals (who were a crazy catch away from a ring btw) stomped us the haters ddnt say we need help in the secondary. NOOO they said henne now. and now that we made our run and ran into a ridiculpus defense and he had a bad game you guys again have fire power to call for the unproven rookie. put henne against ed reed and the rest of the gang. serious? really are you serious? its just a dumb arguement by a people who cant realize that penningtons great decision making overcome his physical shrtcomings. the guy can flat out play. hes not elite but hes not mediocre. and you dont need an elite o win a super bowl. defenses win super bowls. and if you want the sick offense and you think thatll do the trick. just ask the cardinals, or the patriots 2 years back. its abotu defense. pennington pt up great numbers throwing the ball t who? i mean i love our guys but they are basically walk ons. practice squad hero (camarillo), ufa sleeper (bess) and the fledgling rookie (tg). he scored touchdowns with these dudes. come one man you think henne is the guy to show all these wr how to run routes and put the ball in the right place. there is no argument. haterade tastes good but itll cloud your judgement.

I don't think any of "these guys"

are saying Penne won’t give us a better chance to win NOW. I think they believe that Penne isn’t going to be the QB that takes us to being a perienal play off team and SB contender. Because of age I agree but what seems to be the dispute or worry is that it is needed to find out NOW if Henne is that guy. This is were I disagree in that I know the FO has seen and knows more then me about what should be the path to getting Henne in as starter. Though they were ready to throw Henne into the fire last year until Penne became ours not that we have Penne the FO believes he is the right guy to model for Henne on how a professional leader goes about business.

I Personally think you guys won't make the Playoffs

Don’t get me wrong a team that went from 1-15 to 11-5 is great but that wildcat formation you guys ran is getting easier to stop so unless you fire up your offense you don’t have a big chance.

Before you try and start talking wise, get your facts right the first post I put was my opionion what you are supposed to do and gave it a reason for it so it’s not “talk’in smack”. Second of all i really don’t know why you are hating on my quote and i didn’t even bother to read yours cuz it’s seems too idiotic and a waste of my time. So to make it clear to you start talking football or don’t reply at all.

You don't get to make anything clear here

and me saying A Davis is an idiot, IS football talk Einstein, I mean he is an owner of a team correct? So remember that old adage.

The Raiders suck, they will never win anything with that idiot Davis in charge, cuz the game passed him by YEARS ago. You seem to be one of the few people that hasn’t gotten that yet!

You came here to talk about OUR team, grow some thicker skin or run back home Davis boy!

I don’t think you understood my last post where i said talk football or don’t reply at all. Maybe your old age made you forget.
