Dolphins acquire DT Tony McDaniel from Jaguars

The Dolphins today acquired defensive tackle Tony McDaniel from the Jaguars in exchange for a 7th round pick.

McDaniel has spent the past three seasons in Jacksonville as a backup defensive tackle since being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee.  But his 2008 season ended early when he suffered a toe injury in December.  He was placed in injured reserve on December 16.

In three seasons in Jacksonville, McDaniel has played in 25 games - including 3 starts in 2008.  He has amassed 37 tackles and 1.5 sacks in his brief career.

McDaniel is listed at 6'7, 310 pounds.  With that size, it'll be interesting to see how the coaching staff plans to use him.  Will they try him out at nose tackle?  Or is he here as depth at the defensive end spot?

As for his contract, McDaniel was signed to a 3 year, $4 million deal last offseason by the Jaguars.  His 2009 salary is $1 million.  His salary jumps to $1.855 million in 2010.

[Update by Matty I] McDaniel's agent said the Dolphins hope he can line up at any of the 3 DL positions - including nose tackle.  His agent also said that the Dolphins "got a steal."  Let's hope his client can back that up on the field.

nice!

churning the bottom of the roster. Like Sparano said after the season he’s looking for another 16 new guys, competition is the name of the game, earn your spot or lose it.

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

This is a huge guy

6’7" 310 lbs. He will definately be a DE in our 3-4. It is a nice pickup. Safe trade for a 7th rounder.

Jesus, how big does a 3-4 DE need to be?

why not try him at center?

Yeah- I'd say with 99.9999% confidence

that he is a DE – he doesn’t have the height/weight combo of a NT- but he is the prototype of a 3-4 DE.

Jay Ratliff in Dallas plays the nose at 6'4, 302

Maybe they’ll bulk him up for the nose – though I agree that it’s more likely he’s here for the DE spot.

by Matty I on Mar 19, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he might be too tall to get the kind of leverage needed for a NT..

If he was 6’7 330lb, maybe he just stands there like a brick wall. He definitely has great size for a 3-4 DE though. Tough to throw a pass over the 6’7 guy, and all he has to do is stretch his arms out and the run game is shut down to that side lol

by Little Nicky 21 on Mar 19, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah- that is what I was thinking-

6’-7" is too tall for the spot.

I love it….7th rd picks? I take a poopie and i see them floating in the toilet….they are a dime a dozen…this guy comes cheap….knows the NFL….and can play right away if needed…that kicks a 7th rd picks ass anyday.

This looks like a NT to me. thats the size…maybe hell do it all…maybe hell be MVP of the league…ok maybe not

maybe he'll get his ass kicked by the almighty Joe Berger in training camp lol

I think the only thing holding him back from playing NT is his build. Too tall, not enough weight. 6’3, 310, good. 6’7 345, awesome. 6’7 310, he’ll most likely have leverage problems.

We will see though, I’d LOVE it if the guy could play the nose, lord knows we need some depth there.

Dolphins also scheduled to work out Frantz Joseph

He is a 6’3" 235lb MLB from FAU
He ran a 4.83 40-yd dash
He is projected a 5th-6th round pivk.
He had 141 tackles last season, 9.5 being for a loss.

If you ask me, he could be a steal in the 5th or 6th!

I think that this could mean that Starks could go ahead and move to NT full time – and really learn the technique. Starks has all the strength that he needs he needs to learn those angles that Ferguson knows so well. This guy could play behind Langford.

I think it is a good move!!

Hey guys!!

I did some research on Tony McDaniel and found some pretty interesting stuff. He was undrafted from the University of Tennessee and was a three letterman. Everywhere I read he was know as strong and dominant. Despite all the articles on him as being injury prone, he was considered to be producticve, a quick learner, a warrior in the weight room, and was once again, dominant. Despite his size he was actually pretty good when he was healthy and Jack Del Rio said that he had tons of potential. He sees it each time he steps out on the field. He just couldn’t stay healthy no matter what he did.

I personally it is the system in conditioning. Now that he is here we could whip him into shape and he could do damage for us this season.

There is promise there…I mean he is only 24. I’m glad we got him….

Go Dolphins!!

With that being said, I like this move. With the sad departure of Vonnie, we could use some more youth/depth at DE.

honestly guys

you all harped on grove being injury prone or having poor performance, but this guy is an injury machine and the TOE!?!? seriously!?!?!

Toe/Foot injuries are the most likely to prevent an athlete in this sport from returning to 100%… I can’t get behind an injury prone, recently toe-injured, RAW DE, even though while healthy he’ll probably contribute to our D…

At least not as easily as I can get behind a center who we have film of LAST SEASON handling 1-on-1 the NT’s of our conference that were a major issue with our inside run, DESPITE his injuries which are commonly considered a result of all the cutblocking he was forced to do w/ Oakland’s zone blocking..

Green, Grove, now this… Our FO is in love with this battle of the cripples I guess..

I fear he could be a big bozo. granted for the $ he could be a steal for a 7th rounder but 3 yrs, 25 gms, 37 tackles,1.5 sacks and he’s from tenn…someone might need to point out the qb to him, draw him a diagram of his assignment and remind him of which one is the left foot and which one is the right.

This signing reminds me

of what the Trifecta did in dallas with Marc Columbo, Big 6-8 315lb RT drafted by the Bears out of Boston College. Couldn’t stay on the field, always being put on IR. They scooped him up in oct-nov when he was cut, let him work out and rehab until the next yr. He won the job and hasn’t missed a day. I hope we found our backup DL, this move makes me belief we will take a NT with one of the first 3picks and the other two will be LB and TE or 2 Lbers. I don’t see us taking a CB early…….
