Interesting Note In Malcolm Jenkins Interview
I had to take a long drive today at work, and I got to hear an interview with draft prospect Malcolm Jenkins. Most of it was your average boring, generic interview fodder. You know:
Interviewer: "Do you love football?"
Interviewee: "Durhhh, no I just want the money."
But at the end, there was one interesting bit where they grilled him.
Most people know that the question with Jenkins is whether he clan play corner in the NFL, or whether he will have to move to safety. He went through some various teams - New Orleans thinks he could be both, Denver sees him as a pure corner, etc.
Of course by now you know the interesting team is the Dolphins. He said that the Dolphins told him he could NOT play corner in this league, and he would have to move to safety. This was interesting to me on two levels-
1.) we probably wouldn't take Jenkins even if he fell to us at 25. After signing Gibril Wilson and re-upping Bell it makes absolutely no sense to draft a safety in the 1st round.
2.) you can examine some of Jenkins traits, and apply those to some other corner prospects to see how the Dolphins may be looking at them. Jenkins came in at 6'-0 1/8", 204 lbs, and ran a 4.55 forty yard dash. There are also some who say he didn't look very fluid or natural in his position drills (Deon Sanders is said to have remarked "He's killing himself.").
Do you guys think this says anything about any other corner prospects in the draft?
I'm specifically thinking of Sean Smith- who seems to me like a taller Malcolm Jenkins. 6'-4", 214 lbs, 4.53 forty.
Scouting report (via CBSSports.com)
Negatives: Might be seen as a corner/safety "tweener." … Stiff in the upper body. … Does not play with the physicality scouts would like given his size. … Is slow to adjust when backpedaling if a receiver cuts his route short or goes to the skinny post. … Catch-and-drag tackler whose height is a disadvantage when trying to bring down ballcarriers with a low center of gravity. … Inconsistent using his hands at the line of scrimmage. … Gets stuck on blocks. … Takes poor angles to make tackles in space or when attacking a screen. … Just a little more than two years of experience on defense. … Cocky and talks trash.
I know a lot of people here are on the Sean Smith bandwagon- any of you guys having second thoughts, or do you still think the Phins see him as a CB?

Nice Post.
If Jenkins isn’t considered a corner by some teams, how can he be ranked as high as he is on the prospects list? That designation could almost drop him out of round #1.

That is interesting
I love Sean Smith because of his size 6’-4" , 214 lbs, and in my fantasy world he would come i n with that size and shut down that loser in new England( you know who I mean), and now that loud mouth in Buffallo , But in all honesty I believe we go front seven with two of our first three picks and WR with the other depending on who falls where…then CB with the next two picks IMO…

Sean Smith is 6-3 and 209, at least he was at his pro-day
From everything I’ve heard, they really like Sean Smith.
I see it more as the Triad was disappointed in Jenkins as a CB (and other teams feel the same way after his Combine workout) and they won’t touch Vontae Davis with a ten-foot pole.
So in my mind, that means that they are even more likely to take Sean with the #25 pick…

He is 6-'3.5"
he weighed in at 214 at the combine, dropped down to 209 for the pro day. I just don’t see him as being that much better of a corner than Jenkins was personally- if not a little worse technique wise.
Maybe he has a higher athletic ceiling overall, but his technique is not top notch- probably due to being new at the position, but also just because it is hard to be that tall and have the fluidity necessary. . .
