Dolphins Needs for the Draft

Dolphins fans--

Over at Mile High Report we are doing a mock draft with 32 of our members each representing one pick. I got the opportunity to make my pick for the Dolphins. Im doing my research now but would like to know the opinions of all of you. What are your biggest needs? What are your biggest wants? Who would you never want even though he might be the next big thing? Thanks for your help.

CB, WR, OLB, NT

Of those 4, only an NT probably won’t be worth the value at 25.

Our biggest need, I think, is CB. Parcells generally goes for bigger guys, like 5-11ish and 195 or so lbs. I think they are definitely looking defense over offense and would only take a WR if they see little value at CB and OLB.

Reports have them looking into Sean Smith and Darius Butler at CB.

My two choices would be either Butler or OLB Sintim. He just fits the Parcells mold perfectly.

I like Sean Smith

He was killer against BYU (my alma mater). Solid pick-up for sure.

whats the link to your mock draft?

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

That is the link to the homepage and they will be putting every pick up there.

Want I want?

one of the 3 USC LBs or Maybin. After that V. Davis at CB or Laurinaitis LB if all 5 gone I would be inclined to move back to say the Giants spot(let them have a WR that slipped to 25) and then draft a Sintim or Barwin or S. Smith

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

I would love to see the phins draft a man beast MLB

and the only one I would take in the 1st round is Maualuga and I doubt he makes it to 25. That being said, I think the best available pass rushing OLB and CB are next on the list.

by ct1361 on Mar 18, 2009 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

Maualuga is my dream at 25

though I doubt he makes it there. Then comes Mathews and Cushing both of which could go inside next to Crowder leaving a place at say 56 for a OLB that might fall.. Barwin, Sintim, English, Kruger shrugs

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

Fantastic suggestions so far.

Please keep them coming.

How do you guys feel about trading up/down (I like the idea of going down to the Giants spot).

by adamriggs on Mar 18, 2009 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

That would be a great idea-

if they still have a few guys they like with first round grades on the board it is definitely worth it.

RZayo nailed the needs that are worth a 1st round pick though. We are set enough at Oline, DE, ILB, QB, RB, Safety, and TE.

you don't think Akin Ayodele

position is a spot that the FO isn’t looking for an upgrade at? If Maualuga is there I think he should definately be the pick THOUGH I doubt he will be there.

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

by Blaze453 on Mar 18, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It is upgradable-

but I wouldn’t call it a hole on the roster either- he isn’t great but he made a few plays and is capable of holding down the position well enough that we shouldn’t feel compelled to burn a 1st rounder on it. Obviously if there is a special talent like Mau Mau there we probably shouldn’t pass him up- but even if Laurinaitis was around I wouldn’t take him.

I agree

as long as the draft doesn’t go all weird, now at 44 I would take Laurinaitis

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

by Blaze453 on Mar 18, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Would you trade #25 and #56 to move up to 15 to draft Maualuga?

How about #25 and #87 (3rd) to move up to 20? I would. I think Maualuga will be that good. Not only in the run defense but also in the pass defense. He is the next Ray Lewis. IMO.

Wait for #56 for Laurinaitis. Sintim at #44.

we are on the same page :)

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

Great scenarios.

Thanks. Those will help a ton.

by adamriggs on Mar 18, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Maualuga-

but IMHO- I don’t think he is such a difference maker and the position is such a need that it makes sense to give up a 3rd rounder.

This regime is fully capable of finding a starter in the 3rd round- so I see it as trading 2 potential starters for 1 in this scenario, and that 1 starter is at a position that is solid if not spectacular.

by GatorPhan on Mar 18, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he is a playmaker

and I wouldn’t mind trading two potential solid starters for one playmaker. My one big complaint with Crowder was that he didn’t make any big plays last year. That position in a 3-4 defense needs playmakers.

by ct1361 on Mar 18, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

IF and only IF

the 3 USC LBs and Maybin are gone then I think you still get the guy you want at the giants 29th spot. I would be inclined to fleece a 3rd or 4th from the Giants preying on the fact that Colts, Ravens, and the Eagles all have been looking at WRs. I think IF only one of the WRs the Giants is left on the board at 25 they’ll be ringing the phins

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

by Blaze453 on Mar 18, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

OLB

I stress once more, that we have more of a pass rushing beast in Cameron Wake than any OLB we can pick up in the draft. I say CB first round.

by topspin on Mar 18, 2009 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

that is such an unknown

the style of play is so different in the CFL. wider field and only 3 downs meaning they pass the ball alot. Heck if “regular” football was played in the CFL USC, Florida, Texas, OU would be champions the quality of play to me is below the bigtime univercities. Yes I like Wake’s addition BUT considering out of collage he wasn’t drafted nor stuck and had to go to the CFL plus that we got him for backup type money brings as many questions as answers with him shrugs

25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

The level of play is higher bro

all the best of the rest, that didn’t make it to/in the NFL play there. Thats a heck of allot of players, a couple hundred make it to the NFL if that, out of thousands of college players, and just like the NFL allot of them from big-time universities, its a cut below NFL and a cut above college. As far as undrafted Camarillo, Bess and london were undrafted just to name a few. As far as didn’t stick, last years NFL defensive POTY J Harrison, was cut 4 times over a 4 year span by 2 teams. Everyone progresses at a different rate :>)

he isn’t a sure thing thus crossing off OLB/pass rusher from your draft list :)

I was thrilled

when we got Wake but I wouldn’t pass on a Mathews, Cushing, or even a Maybin because we got him in fact if one believes we need to upgrade from Roth(I don’t) or even add a partner to him(for passing downs which is where I stand) then we are going to be in need of 2 OLBs come 2010 season because IF Porter plays anywhere to this year’s level he’ll price himself out of Miami :)

amen...finster...

wake was the defensive player of the year 2 years in a row…he wasn’t just a cfl player he was the best for 2 years…..that’s something guys…. finster is right…there are a lot more guys who have been cut and let go and played elsewhere that have come into the league and made a difference…

at least this guy has been playing with men….not college boys

by hwyatt3 on Mar 19, 2009 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Here is Wake's wiki facts...

…mark my words, this guy will work his way into the starting position opposite Joey Porter by at least mid-season….

…i haven’t posted this year as much as i did last year but if any of you remember me, i made some predictions about our players and i was pretty spot on….

Prior to the 2005 NFL Draft, Wake worked out at Penn State’s Pro Day and ran a 4.55-second 40-yard dash

Wake played for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League, earning the league’s Most Outstanding Rookie Award in 2007. He recorded 39 sacks over his first two seasons in the CFL, earning Western Division All-Star honors as well as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award both years.

After receiving interest from 17 total NFL teams, Wake signed with the Dolphins.

Way to try

and parlay Pennington’s last season into Cutler. ‘A’ for effort, but I think Bronco Nation would freak if this was even proposed. Ha Ha Ha
