Dolphins interested in Maybin?
Penn State held its Pro Day workout today for former Nittany Lions hoping to get a shot at playing in the NFL. In all, 18 Penn State football players participated in a variety of drills similar to those run at the combine. Two had a stellar day, according to the Allentown Morning Call. WR Derrick Williams and DE/OLB Aaron Maybin were reportedly much more fluid in drills and improved on many of their combine results.
After the workout, Maybin had meetings with scouts and personnel from the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. Maybin, whose stock was slipping after a poor showing in drills and a slow 40 time at the combine, most likely had the best workout of all 18 participants. He ran his 40 in 4.53 seconds, more than 0.25 seconds faster than his performance in Indianapolis, and improved his vertical (from 38 to 40 inches) and broad (from 10' 4" to 10' 10") jumps.
"It was a good day," Maybin said outside Holuba Hall afterward. "I know my athletic ability and I know what I'm capable of. I put some numbers on the board that are indicative of the kind of player I am."
A lot of talk around this site has been who we should take at pick 25. A young, pass rushing OLB would be a nice addition - though possibly a luxury we don't need at the moment. However, Maybin seems to be improving and has solidifed himself as a first rounder.
If he is available at 25, do we take him over a CB or WR? Thoughts?

What worries me...
…is that they don’t mention what Maybin weighed in at. At the Combine, he was in the high 240s and ran a slow 40 time. It was believed he gained weight because some felt like he was too small (mid 230s) for some teams in the NFL. But he gained weight and lost his speed.
For him to have cut over .2 seconds off of his 40 time, did he drop back down to the 230s? And if so, that’s just way to small for OLB in Miami’s defense.

Weight
I’ll keep digging and see if I can find his weight at the Pro Day.
The huge improvement in the 40 was rather shocking and a change in weight may be the cause. Good eye, Matty.

Found it, I think
According to NFL.com, Maybin weighed in at 249 at the Combine. These articles seem to imply he was 252 pounds today. That’s bigger than 2008 Defensive MVP James Harrison, who is listed on the Steelers site at 242 lbs.
He gains an additional three pounds and sheds a quarter of a second off of his 40? Wow.

If he really weighed in at 252 and ran that 40 time
his stock just shot up the board. Early to mid teens I would say.

I live in PA
And there was an article in the paper about the PSU Pro Day and it said that Maybin weighed “over 250” but it didn’t give an exact weight.

not an issue
if the dolphins were to draft him (which he wont drop that far) i dont think the training staff would have a problem adding some weight to him.

I would guess
the rush to gain weight(for combine) and the time issues at combine had more to do with slower 40 time then him losing weight for pro day. IF the 3 USC backers are all gone I am all for the Maybin pick :)
25th pick - Clay Mathews LB USC
44th pick - Alphonso Smith cb Wake Forest
56th pick - Clint Sintim LB Virginia
86th pick - Fili Moala DT USC

What about Lawrence Sidbury
later in the draft?
He’s 6’3, 266 – he already ran a 4.57- 40 so it is hard to see him losing that speed if he dropped maybe 5-10 pounds to play OLB in our 3-4.

Doesn’t he only have one year of starting experience… I know he’s raw and an athlete but as far as athletically gifted outside linebackers go…I thought that’s why we got Cam Wake..
