Dolphin Draft Needs by Pete Prisco
What sets this article apart from the rest? A handy little bar graph displaying the Fins biggest draft needs.
I like Pete, I think he's a good sports writer, and he thinks the Fins will be serious competitors in 2010 if Tuna and Tuna Helpers draft well and fill biggest areas of need.
I was surprised that Pete listed TE as an area of need. Which I disagree with because I don't think TE is a position of need at all. I don't think Fasano is an elite TE, but he's a good one and I think our picks could be better spent in other areas.
What do you guys think?

Exactly, not only do we have Fassano who could start in any team in the league
but we have Martin and Haynos

I would say we have a much urgent need at RB depth for that matter

Parmele isn't with the Dolphins anymore

Yes, he got poached by the Ravens
I was just pointing out that the Triumvirate were perfectly happy to risk said poaching because they think our rb depth is good enough not to make it an urgent need during the draft.

IF one of the top 4 RBs drop very far
like Brown or Moreno or Green don’t be surprised if Parcells pulls the trigger early on one of them

good theory it is the first time somebody mentions something like that

We have two RBs
that would start on most teams, so don’t get your hopes up :>)

one on the last year
of a two contract and the other that barring another injury will ant to be one of the highest paid backs in the league. This leads me to believe that IF a top back drops far he would or could very well pull the trigger. The other position I could see Parcell pulling the trigger on higher then most would expect is OT. We have no depth there in case of injury and IF a guy that was ranked up top by Parcells falls….

Good points about RBs
and OT for that matter, but he’s not going to pick an OT up high, it’ll be a project type player(s), we have allot of $ tied up in those two:>)

I don't mean 1st day high
though at round 3 it wouldn’t shock me. Another position I believe could be a day 1 pick is DE to go along with NT. I believe 6 of the 9 picks or even 7 of 9 will come on D. NT,DE(another rotator upfront), ILB, OLB, and 2 in secondary maybe 3 (2 corners and a saftey) add in a OT and that could very well leave 1 or 2 tops on O. If a back taken maybe a WR doesn’t even get drafted and they shoot for 2010 draft for playmakers
53 players – kicker and punter leaves 51 spots 25 O and 26 D(considering bill’s history but lets say 26 on O.
TE 3 (have 3 there they like)
QB 3 (barring Beck traded have 3 they like)
backs 4 or 5(4 leaves alful thin) Williams, Brown, Cobb, and Polite plus a maybe
WR 5 or 6( Ginn, Cam, Bess, London all staying, IF 5 recievers and add another means Wilford goes at a cap cost PLUS Parcells admitting he made a mistake after 1 year(I see this unlikely) so if you draft a WR chances are we keep 6
OL 9 or 10 We have 9 guys they like with NO T backup(starters plus Satele, Berger, and 2 guys that STARTED most of last season for us at guard and don’t forget Murphy that they thought alot of) considering the past injury history of Grove, Thomas, Smiley ect I expect they keep 10 OL
3 TE
3 QB
10 OL
5 WR
4 Backs
25 O players so considering I said I will assume this side of ball will carry the 26 players we can add one more positional upgrade… where? I have to say back up to 5. With only 1 FB and 3 RBS they most logical place to add yes?
What I am saying unless you believe Parcells will take the cap hit AND admit a huge FA mistake after 1 year no WR will be drafted. Matter of fact unless you think we will only carry 9 OL thus dropping Murphy, two young starters at guard, and every other prosect we have there besides Thomas 10 is the number.
All I see being drafted on the O side of ball is a OT or 2 late plus a RB anything else drafted on this side of ball means giving up on someone they like shrugs

100% agreement
Spot on to what i’m seeing as well, 9 or 10 OL, 4 or 5 RBS, and those draft #s are also what i would figure :>)

as much as WR has been stated as a top need
both here and in various sporting mags ect I cannot for the life of me, with Parcells history) imagine a WR gets drafted period unless something weird happens. We have ALOT of defensive positions that need to be filled this year and next. The way this draft is setup is for an oppertunity to get all or most of these spots filled. I am saying 7 picks of 9 go on Defense leaving 2 more picks for offense and we need a T reserve to go with the rest of Oline. Next year for the playmakers on offense shrugs
And IF FO believes none of the current 4 WRs is “the man” not only will be looking for a WR in 2010 BUT also a replacement for Williams carries AND a potential replacement for Brown IF he wants more money then FO willing to pay a back shrugs

I see nothing wrong
with bringing in a 3rd or 4th rd TE to compete for playing time. If Bill has a TE ranked highest when it comes time to pick in the 4-5 rds, I say get him…….I like our TE but we can get better at the position…….
by jvw on Mar 18, 2009 2:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I dont think we can get better at the position with a Rookie TE not even Pettigrew, why?
because next year we are going to have to rely heavily on our TE and you want a guy that 1- has enough experience in the league to be a solid contributor and 2- knows cp10 and cp10 knows him, meaning, a guy that has a year already in the system under his belt and chemistry with the QB, not to say leadership

Sure, every team
or at least most teams could stand to get better at many positions.
But in any sort of list of priorities I can think of at least 4 that would rate higher for us than TE:
Receiver,
Corner,
Nose Tackle
Pass Rusher/OLB
I mean seriously those are way, way higher than TE in my view.

personally I would put
WR at the bottom of that 4 priority list of yours :)

Well it wasn't in any kind of order
but I’d be shocked if anyone thinks we need a TE more than those other 4 spots.

you are correct :)
TE would not be addressed until round 7 if at all.

Tight End doesn't seem like a huge need now-
but BOTH Fasano and Martin are up for new contracts after this season. I believe Fasano will be an RFA so that is not as big a deal- but losing Martin would take out 450 receiving yards and a few TDs.
It isn’t a pressing need but it is forward thinking.
