J Cutler has asked for a trade - Should the phins make a play for him?

Media reports are now saying that J Cutler has asked to be traded.

This is a real simple poll Question,  do you think it would be wise for the dolphins

to try and aquire cutler?

If you think the price will be too high - likely a first rounder and something else, but otherwise would like to have Cutler as the teams QB - just vote and leave your comment below.

my opinion? when there is talent like him on the market and QB has been a team need for at least a decade you have to inquire... however i'm pretty leary of Cutler because he just seems to be a bit of a head case.

You have to take a look...

It is not too often that a young, talented QB like this could hit the market. If the asking price isn’t too high, I think you make the deal. Something like a 2nd this year and next years 1st. That would work for me.

Way to be hypocritical

This comment is based on some assumptions. At least one person that didn’t want Terrell Owens for his “destructive behavior” (forgot the term) voted yes. Cutler continues on his “destructive behavior”. This guy is worse than TO, he is the QB.

I guess I should have thought twice before creating my profile's name.

by Beck4Mercy on Mar 16, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

His "destructive behavior" started when the new coach lied to him...

sure he isn’t handling it well, but I can see his point. The most important relationship on a football team is between the play caller (head coach or off. coordinator) an the QB. If those two can’t trust each other, then the situation is destined to fail.

All of us fins fans have been clamouring for a pro bowl QB since Marino retired. Instead of trading for a broken down one (Culpepper), they could be trading for pro bowler that hasn’t even entered the prime of his career. I think this coaching staff would bring out the best in Cutler and the QB problem will have been solved for the next 10 years.

As long as Penne and Henne

are on roster it wouldn’t happen now if Denver took Penne and say a 3rd rounder I would be all for the trade. Let him earn his starting spot against Henne and go from there.

As far as Beck unless someone was willing to pony up a 3rd or atleast a 4th round pick I don’t see him being traded he’ll complete next year for the job and serve as Henne’s backup unless for some unknown reason Penne decides to be our backup Parcells does like his vetern backup QBs

NO WAY!

Though I agree he is a great young talent and, I am not 100% sold on Penne..know this… next year WILL NOT be a cake walk.. .we are AFC East Champs and everyone is gunning for us. (just look at free agency). We also have a VERY hard schedule. My point is that we are still learning to win together, now we must learn to fight through a tough season together cause this one coming up won’t be easy.. If CP can’t get it done, then Henne will ride the wave and most importantly CP10 will be right by his side…

I saw a team developing last year,,, and I don’t want to disrupt it with disruption. 2010 is our year to breathe out and show the world we’re back for real. If for some reason we struggle more than we should next year, I’d hate to see a guy like Cutler pointing fingers and turning us about face…. in 2010, we need all cylinders forward…Tuna, Porter, Chad, Ricky, Ferguson, might all be gone and what’s left will be young vets leading the way… and I can’t have that be Cutler… no thanks….

Don't necessarily disagree...

but there is going to have to be a significant upgrade in the QB position eventually. The league knows that Cutler can play. Do we really know if Henne can? Isn’t Cutler a better Henne, right now and therefore less risky? If Henne can’t play, then the phins are back at square one.

So whether it is the ’09, ’10, or ’11 season, the QB issue will still need to be addressed. I say get it over with ASAP and see what happens.

That's my thinking...

He was a pro bowl player in ‘08, playing for a team that started 7 RB’s due to injury and a defense that was one of the worst in the league. You put him with the Phins new and improved O-Line, with Ronnie and Ricky running the ball, and a good defense, his talent will be huge for this team, IMO.

How much is he going to improve the run game because he can stretch the field? Those safeties from Baltimore in the playoff game wouldn’t be able to make tackles at the LOS if they had to respect the deep pass.

That is why I'm all about trying Henne out sooner.

If he fails, try the next young guy, then the next….. How many guys did Denver go through to find Cutler,,, The problem with some franchises is that the “decision” makers are stuck with their move, because their job is riding on it. Sparano went with Chad and it worked, sort of… so now why put in Henne? I’ve gone on record many times.. saying that Henne, or someone with a bigger arm is better for us down the road and unless we have a superbowl ready team, Chad is just taking up someone’s time and making Sparano and Parcells look good.

And I’m not so sure he is a SURE thing… He reminds me of Jeff George, sorry,,, I hate to use his name.

I'm all for giving Henne a chance...

But if you are for giving Henne a chance, why wouldn’t you want Cutler? They are about the same age, the same size, and they both have the same type of arm. The only difference is that Cutler is a pro bowler and Henne is unknown. Henne could suck. Then you have to start all over again trying to find a QB to replace noodle arm.

And I for my part have agreed with you...

and tried to stick up for you when the Penne fans get all up in arms over the fact that his physical tools are a liability for any offense.

All that I was trying to say above is that there is no guarantee that Henne can play. We know Cutler can. I want the sure thing. Haven’t we waited long enough for a quality, pro bowl QB?

by ct1361 on Mar 16, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yup

think we are in agreement.

the franchise needs a long term solution at QB …. and i guess the reason why cutler maybe on the market is because he gives people cause for concern. but he would be the answer from a physical stand point, and he IS proven as a quality nfl qb, something that Henne likely won’t be for another couple years.

by W NY Fins Fan on Mar 16, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe for Beck

and late round pick but I don’t see it happening. Sure we don’t know if Henne can play at the NFL level yet but I can see trading him off biting us in the ass like passing on Drew Brees for Culpepper. CP does have his obvious limitations but his strength is that he isn’t going to lose the game for us. (Unless you count the playoff game) If he could beat CP out of the starting job then good for him and us, but I don’t see giving up on Henne. No need to yet. While we could use a stronger arm at QB, who’s he gonna throw it too? Go ahead and argue that Ginn is the greatest but I’m not convinced. We are still lacking the threat opposite Ginn to help free him up. I think we’re better off sticking with what we’ve got in CP right now and let Henne grow into the starting position. I’m out on giving up higher draft picks.

I dont like the guys character…but his stats dont lie.

It would be a eff U to CP10..hed be cut.

Just a dumb comment by Le Batard on the radio…but he says give em the 1st and Henne…and he makes the point not many, if any, team can offer a young QB thats not played yet and might be good.

If i choose….NO.

If it happens…and we dont give up the house….i wont cry…this kid should be a top 5 QB for 10 years…wherever he is…

I see the Jets, 49ers, Minn, Det, as likely teams right off the bat. Lions have the 20th pick as well…

I do not blame him really for whats happening..McDaniels is an asshole and Cutler just had his best yr…if u have a job…broke sales records..and a new manager comes in and trys to get rid of you…that would hurt anyone.

It isn't to say Cutler hasn't done wrong...

but seriously, as a coach you have to know how to manage your players – particularly your QB, especially when it is very a) young, b) talented, c) by far the best player on your team.

Everybody knows that players can be traded, but denying it or rubbing it a kid’s face doesn’t really help.

Then again, maybe Cutler wants out after seeing his former Coach (shanny) and off. coordinator being cut loose. It could easily be just as much him as McDaniels.

Regardless, 25 year old pro bowl QB’s are something we usually only speculate on being available – it is march after all – but this looks like it could happen. As in, Cutler getting moved.

With that in mind, he would instantly be the answer to the dolphins QB questions. The caveat is well, who is he going to throw to? no, no, you can’t say Matty’s BFF. There is nobody of Brandon Marshall’s talent on this team. Can Cutler line up at CB because we have big holes there too. What about the pass rush?

We have some holes to fill although obviously having a pro bowl QB is pretty intriguing.

QB and WR production go hand in hand

and it just may be that bringing in a QB of his caliber is just the thing our young WRs need! With his arm strength and more importantly velocity, (Dan’s big pet peeve) the WRs don’t have to be as open, cuz the ball gets there in a flash:>)

Wes Welker would look pretty much the same as he does today with Penne

throwing to him because he isn’t a deep guy. Between Cutler and Penne throwing to Welker, I don’t think you would see much difference.. or if any, Pennington would make Welker look better because of his good decision making and short accuracy. Sure Cutler has more velocity, but Penne has better timing and touch (AND leadership skills).

Where Cutler would make a difference is going deep for Ginn.

The Phins might have some holes to fill ....

But QB is by far the hardest to fill. They have trying to fill it since Marino. The Bears have been trying to fill that need since Sid Frickin Luckman. Once you fill the QB need, the others are relatively easy.

A young pro bowler fills that need. And Cutler hasn’t even entered his prime yet.

can you really let the jets get him

i know detroit is is likely to win the bidding war, unless miami enters the fray, but can you really give the jets a franchise QB, when the dolphins don’t have a proven one? i mean Henne has potential but so did j fletcher….

NO WAY !!!!

I really thought about this hard and anytime you do have a great QB such as Cutler available you have to think about it. He is young and talented and can do just about everything .. my only concern is that he hasn’t taken his team to the playoffs and blew such a huge lead in the division this past season … great QB’s find a way to win no matter what.

My main problem is what would this say about the team to pickup a player who cried his way out of denver … this team has been built with strong charater people and the coaches demand the best out of every player … I don’t think this is something Cutler would be use to or like.

Well I like the thought I think we would be better to stay the coarse with Penny and Henne

Still should have won .. IMO

I don’t blame him but you have to beat Buffalo at home to win the division … Buffalo wasn’t even playing for anything and they still beat Denver. Cutler had a decent game and put up 23 but if he needed to put up more he should have … Think about how many time Marino use to do that …

If this were last year at this time, and we were sitting on Beck and Mccown? I’d say absolutely yes. BUt today? No way, nuh uh, no how. What a horrible idea! Greg Cote thinks we should make a play for Cutler – I think we should trade Cote for whatever beatwriter Denver has.

We have a solid veteran, a proven leader, a teacher, and one of the classiest acts in all football right now helming Miami at QB. Behind him is a promising student, a potential franchise guy of the future. Does Cutler have a better arm? Yes, but does he have a better personality – Eff no. Look at him…he’s crying like a baby and throwing a hissy fit over there in Denver because his new coach had the audacity to look into a trade for Cassel, and then was unapologetic about it. Penne and Henne are probably both right now commiting 100 percent to the team and the playbook for next season while Cutler is fanning his steamed mangina because he got a little stung when he peed. I say let the Jests grab up the big-assed baby. He sounds like as much of a cancer as Terrell Owens. How many TD’s did Cutler’s disparaged ass throw when his team needed to win only ONE game to secure the division and then lost the final five? Was he a leader then? For someone who boasted to have all the arm strength of Elway, he had none of the poise or leadership quality. He didn’t raise his team to a higher level.

Forgive my rant…but I hinestly think that going after Cutler has got to be the stupidest idea i’ve ever heard. Let’s start next year in a way that we didn’t start the last 6 – with the same starter at QB.

Amen Finfans!

Really?

“Stupidest idea ever?” Really, a guy that throws almost 300 yds per game, over a touchdown a game, and you think it’s the dumbest idea to look into signing him? I think about the last few seasons for Marino, he was throwing the ball the entire game, kind of like Cutler, with no running game, kind of like Cutler, and you can’t blame the defense at all during the stretch run for Denver?

We’d be crazy not to look into Cutler. Would I want him, yes. Could we get him, yes. Should we spend what we need to get him, no. He’s going to cost at least a 1st, 3rd, and 2nd next year. That’s a lot to pay. I still think he improves this team vastly, especially with our running game. The offense would be pretty scary here.

As far as him being a lockeroom cancer? The guy is cocky, nobody ever argued against that, but he also has never missed a meeting or workout until yesterday…sounds like a team player to me. Didn’t disrupt the team chemistry until now when he wants out. Definately wouldn’t be afraid to pick him up.

well said

my guess is your cost is a little high for him, but likely not too far off, however some of the picks could go away by adding a penne and or henne or beck.

I got the cost for him from

John Clayton, as big of geek on ESPN he is, he’s usually spot on with this kind of information. He said, a 1st and 3rd this year, and 2nd in 2010. If we could get him for any of our quarterbacks and a 1st, I’d pull the trigger in a second.

Yeah and that was based off

the Jeff George deal back in the 90’s. That’s a lot to give up for a player but the sky is the limit with Cutler given his natural gifts though.

I guess it is hard for me to figure how McDaniels, another soon to be pats assistant who fails as a head coach, didn’t screw things up here.

Seriously – you walk into your new franchise and your offense ranks 2nd in the league while your defense is 31st.

So what do you do? Naturally, you try to trade your 25 year old pro bowl QB!

Yeah no kidding...

the pats assistants turned head coaches have been lousy.

If Cutler is traded then I would bet McDaniels is gone as Denver’s coach in 2 years. I think the owner isn’t going to be too happy with those 4-12, 5-11 seasons when the new coach trades away by far, the best player on the team.

Definitely a dilemma..

If you base it solely on talent, I think you give up whatever you have to to get him. On the field, Jay Cutler is a stud. He has the physical tools to be a GREAT QB in this league for a long time.

But he has alot of prima-donna in him. Maturity is an issue, and he really doesn’t possess the leadership qualities you want in a Franchise QB right now. But he’s only 25.

Honestly, I don’t remember there being many problems with him when Shanny was running the team, and all the crybaby stuff really showed up once Shanahan and the rest of the staff was fired. So maybe a strong coach and a no-BS, winning atmosphere can bring about the fiery leader people expected him to be.

It’s one of those high-risk, high-reward situations. Either he remains the crybaby prima-donna and destroys your locker room chemistry, and you lose out on valuable draft picks and possibly a good young QB, or he matures and becomes the consumate Franchise QB we’ve all been waiting for since Danny boy retired. Personally, I’d make the deal if I could keep Henne. Not because I think Henne’s so great, but because I think having him still on the roster lessens the risk of bringing Cutler in because we still have a young QB learning and developing in our system, in case JC goes crazy. A 2nd, a conditional 1st/3rd next season, a 5th, and John Beck. If we go to the playoffs, next year’s pick is the first. If we don’t, it’s a 3rd. Done deal IMO. We’ve blown much more than that on trying to find a QB the last few years.

Agreed

not to mention the new head coach is a head case! Iknow if i was JC i would be more than a little miffed! I mean whats on this dudes mind, one day hes talking trash about him, the next hes trying to confrence call all the problems he created away, BI polar much not to much much to much lol :>)

I would make a play for Cutler in a heartbeat.

I’ve seen this kid from Vandy till the Pro’s and he is something special. He can do things that almost no other QB in the league can do- if he had a defense that could hold teams to less than 30 points they would have been SB contenders.

I don’t really buy into the hole “head case” thing either. Is he kind of an arrogant ass? Yeah- a bit. He says things like he has a bigger arm than Elway- but so what? When Marino came into the league he said he could throw with anyone too.

As far as the whole McDaniels vs. Cutler situation- I see it as Cutler using that Vandy education to see that the Bronco’s ship is sinking with yet another in over his head Belichick assistant. I say that he asked for a trade is a sign that he has a brain- not that he is a prima donna.

I agree with everything that you just said...

He only became a head case because of McDaniels. And I like his confidence / arrogance. All the great ones have that. But I guess that you could say all the douchebags have that too.

by ct1361 on Mar 16, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah-
But I guess that you could say all the douchebags have that too.

That is definitely true- you are confident if you win and a d-bag if you lose I guess- lol.

But Cutler definitely has the talent to back it up – I don’t think he says the things he does to piss people off- he just genuinely believes he is the best which is something I like to see in my franchise QB. If you don’t believe you can beat your opponent- you probably won’t.
