Dolphins sign CB Eric Green
The Dolphins have signed former Cardinals CB Eric Green to a multi-year contract, according to the team's official website.
Green, who will be 27 next week, is a Florida native and attended Clewiston High School. At 5'11, 196, Green will likely be in the battle for the starting cornerback spot vacated by Andre Goodman.
Green was a starter in Arizona this year before free-falling down their depth chart. By the playoffs, Green was actually a healthy inactive for Arizona. However, some scoutes believe Green does have talent. Hopefully, the same coaches that turned around Andre Goodman can use their magic to get the most out of Green.
It'll be interesting to see Green's contract numbers, though. If he's making any more than Leigh Bodden got from the Patriots, I will be seriously unhappy.

Got some depth......
I still think Sparano like Parcells has done in the past, wants to have a pass rush oriented defense where the CB’s are helped out by the work of the DL and the LB’s. Safe sign, get another via the draft………we’re good.

Great News
I am glad they got him, I feel more comfortable heading into the draft. It provide depth at the least, and an option in case a rookie does not work out as planned.

If Jason Allen has indeed been put in his permanent position,
then he has a legitimate shot to start. It’s a lot easier to switch from Safety to CB and vice/versa in NCAA, but this is the NFL. The last 2 regimes have failed him by constantly moving him around, and let’s just hope this current FO realizes that. He has shown flashes of brilliance at times, but he’s still very very raw. If he’s left at CB, he may not start the opener, but he will be a starter by the end of the season.

This signing to me is all about the numbers...
If he got more the Bodden, Bad Signing. If he gets more than K. Lucas, Bad Signing. If he got 1-2 years at a low price ($1mil / year), Good Signing.
I don’t like the fact that he was a healthy inactive for Arizona though. They were one of the worst pass defenses in the league last year.

That's not true at all.
Bodden purposefully signed a 1 year contract with an easy team to play for in order to raise his value next year. He wasn’t going to come here unless we paid him much more than the Patriots, nor should we want a guy who is only about the money. That doesn’t sound like a team player to me.

This is a depth move IMO
I still don’t think this affects our draft at all, but it does upgrade our Nickel and Dime package I believe. We still need to draft a CB fairly early, because whether Green is a legit starter or not, we need depth and we need an eventual replacement for Will Allen.
This, to me, reminds me of the Charlie Anderson/Reggie Torbor moves. Quality depth.

I do think that there are some CB’s in that draft than can start over Green, but it gives me the comfort knowing, Nate Jones or Joey Thomas have to be on the field. Although Jones showed some poise this year

Agreed.
I think the strategy is that we don’t have to pick a CB first now, so if an AFC team tries to spite us or get us to trade up by threatening to draft a CB, we can just go OLB and grab a CB in round 2. Before this, we were pretty much forced to grab the best CB on the board in round 1. If you think about it, it actually gives us a better chance to grab a corner at #1.

I can't argue with that logic
The man couldn’t crack the lineup in the playoffs for the team that allowed the most TD passes in the NFL in the regular season – 9 more than the 2nd place team.

oh - and in the playoffs
Green sat and watched as Arizona gave up over 240 yards per game through the air. And yet – the coaching staff didn’t feel Green could help them on the field.
That’s certainly a red flag.

head scratcher.
Where’s Phin Phan in MA with the numbers? Something tells me they are not pretty.
When you can’t make the starting lineup of an already sketchy secondary then it certainly doesn’t sound terribly encouraging.
Maybe the guy is a gem, a rare find – but it sure doesn’t sound like it.
Hopefully this is more of a nickel/depth role.

i had the (un)fortune to watch the Cardinals this season and their pass defense was pretty bad, and for this guy to go down on the depth chart faster than the girl i slept with last night is pretty scary, and i am wondering why we picked him up, and why he has a chance to be our starter, i dont think i want him as a starter…

They changed their defensive style.
They started focusing on the pass rush. I don’t know if they were rushing corners or not, but it would stand to logic that, if they were, they benched him in favor of CBs like Nate Jones.
by joel311 on Mar 12, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just a thought when you consider the Green benching-
if DR-C is the one who replaced him – remember that he was a first round draft pick making decent money so there may have been some pressure to start him because of the $$, not to mention just to see what he had. As to why he wasn’t a nickel or even dime back I don’t know. Could be because he was awful, could be because he had escalators in his contract. Just some food for thought before you get too down on the signing.

Well if he gets benched for a top player...
then I think that would be one thing.
The indication though is that he wasn’t even active for the playoffs – not even as a nickelback. Suggesting the cards figured not just DRC was better, but several other guys too.
by Natalya on Mar 12, 2009 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know-
he could be terrible, I haven’t really seen him. But you have to consider all angles. If he was due some kind of performance escalator- and they thought the nickel and dime backs were good enough- then they bench him and save the $$.

It’s funny how at one point people like bringing him in…and when we sign him they hate it.
think i labeled him Eric Burnt Orange….
not sure it’s an upgrade – heck J Allen played pretty dang well agains Marshall and Evans before they left him 1 on 1 with Moss and the officials… just like last year when they went looking for an upgrade with other teams trash and croaker cost them the first 2 games. I’d rather they try to develop what they have then go with someone AZ knew they would replace last year (draft of R-C)…
on top of that – you have a guy with suspect speed and has issues understanding coverage (per the scouting reports) and i don’t see the upside here, when they could have just as cheaply signed players with a wee bit more ability to serve as depth/insurance/competition.

I can be a negative nelly and say
They should have got Brown, but got Grove
Should have got Bodden, but got Green
But what’s done is done and the season has yet to begin. These two might do something good.
But they might do something bad as well, but at this point we don’t know.

scouts inc. report
Green is a four-year veteran who the Cardinals drafted in the third round of the 2005 draft. He has excellent size, speed and athleticism for the position. He is smooth, explosive and can extend the cushion with his pedal and transition to close on the ball in front of him or to the sides. He has fluid hips which he can flip to turn and run with receivers deep and he has a burst to catch up when receivers get a step on him. His biggest issues are his lack of concentration and lapses of techniques. He tends to gamble and can get out of position, overestimating his ability to make the play. He has average ball skills when he can get in the area and has just one interception in his first three years, that coming his rookie season. He is not timid about getting involved, but could be more physical in run support. He pretty much needs to be 100 percent healthy to play effectively and could be tougher, mentally.

If our DB coach was so great, why can’t he turn Jason Allen into a solid starter? After all, he has all the measurables and has the physical skills needed (size, speed, etc).

it all boils down to the essence of that question
not every athlete responds the same way to every coach, i know ive had coaches who i just cant click with and those which i excel. It’s the same principal you derive from teaching styles in schools sometimes that teacher just aint the right one for you.
that said a good coach knows how to meld to and squeeze the juice out of – most – athletes, a great coach knows how to take them further. the key term being – most – .

honestly?
i think Jason Allen is a soft lil bitch. IMO. You know what i mean..hes folded under the pressure because he is trying to live up to something he never was…1st rd pick talent. I just honestly believe there are sharks..and their are whales on a football field…and Jason is a whale. haha
Here is a video of him vs the Canes…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mNbvO-30hI
he came out the same year as Ronnie…so he fits the size and age requirements
i doubt they handcuffed themselves to this guy…well see i could be wrong but i feel like this guy has more talent than anyone we have outside of Will Allen…and why wouldnt we take that? We NEED 2 more solid cbs to me…and i bet we draft some nice ones so im not worried
what does worry me is a 5th attempt at giving Jason Allen a shot…..he needs to earn it..not get it cuz he was the last guy left. Owens and Moss DO NOT PLAY….so we cant come with Jason/Will Allen plus some rook’s

how many games he started?
by joel311 on Mar 12, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Eric Green started in 9 games
and had 32 tackles, 6 PDs, and 1 int.
Will Allen started in 16 games and had 50 tackles, 18 PDs, and 3 ints.
Ok so, he’s a bit worse than Will Allen in pass coverage, but the numbers say he makes the tackle when he doesn’t defend the pass. He really doesn’t sound that bad to me.
All the people talking shit probably haven’t watched him play a single game and are going off the fact that he was benched. You have no idea what kind of relationship he had with the coaching staff. Edgerin James was benched. Anquon Boldin was very disgruntled. That does not reflect well on the coaching staff and FO.

Ok
he still had 2/3 PDs for every game he started where Will Allen had barely more than 1 per game. I want to know the whole story, like how often were his receivers targeted compared to other corners, was he paired up with allstar receivers 1on1? Were those tackles his receivers, or other receivers/RBs? Was he injured and how bad? Were there performance bonuses included in his restricted FA contract?
There are just a ridiculous amount of unknowns in this signing. There’s no need to get worked up on the negative side of things. All I know is he is the ideal size for a Parcells CB, and the FO either:
A) Saw something in him that they liked be it a good price for an experienced depth CB
or
B) Are using him as a strategic move to help ensure us a good CB in round 1.
Either way, it seems like a good thing to me.

We would still use a CB

There's 2 practice squad guys that our FO liked I believe
Will Billingsly, who might be the fastest player on the roster, and Scorpio Babers, who might have the coolest name on the roster

To me...
This guy looks like our version of Travis Daniels. Hey wait! Travis Daniels was actually signed and it was before Green! LOL! I’m not too excited about his one, I’m still waiting on the draft.

try not to use "beat" and "rod" in the same sentence, unless it's a joke
i think it’s going to be something really funny, and then it’s not.

who cares
if we don’t sign a corner and J Allen and W Allen go down we would be desperate for a CB and then we might pay more mid season for someone with less talent.

Reality Check
does anybody on this site actually think the trifecta plans on starting this guy or hes the answer? He was brought in for special teams, some offseason competition, and as depth… Thats it!!
Dont get me wrong i will welcome him as a dolphins player and wish him the best of luck and great success

Don't speak too soon- we don't know what they plan.
The best indicator will be his contract- lets see how much they are paying him and that will def indicate their expectations.

I'm happy with the pick up...
This sets our roster straight for the draft. If the season were to start right now, I think we’d be in just as good of shape as any team out there. This gives us some depth, he may end up being the starter at some time, but looking at it I think Jason Allen will be Starting Week 1.

you know, people tend to miss that
these guys (the TRIAD) know what they are doing and part of the strategy is to set themselves up for the draft through FA.
Going into the draft with no glaring hole gives them flexibility in picks, AND the ability to bluff if needed.
they are super-football smart.
