Dolphins Free Agency Updates
Not too much happening right now for the Dolphins. While things got crazy yesterday when the Dolphins locked up Gibril Wilson and Yeremiah Bell - creating the NFL's most physical safety tandem - the Fins haven't been as aggressive as many thought. Or if they have, the price tags have been too rich for their blood.
Here's some of the latest:
- The Palm Beach Post is confirming the Herald's report from last night that former Cowboys G/C Joe Berger will be visiting Miami today. The Fins have reportedly backed out of the Jason Brown sweepstakes after learning his asking price and, instead, will likely turn to the draft to find a center.
- The National Football Post reports that the Raiders have shown interest in Jason Brown - to go along with St. Louis' high interest in him.
- One of my personal favorites available, CB Leigh Bodden, will visit New England today. It was reported that the Dolphins at least contacted Bodden's agent last night to touch base with him. And fyi - Bodden has the same agent as Gibril Wilson.
- Though DE Chris Canty remains on the market, the Dolphins are still not expected to make a play for the former Cowboy.
- The Jets are close to signing Bart Scott to a 5 year, $40 million contract.

Bart Scott Signs With Jets
Jets signed ILB Bart Scott to a five-year, $40 million contract.
Clearly, Scott was looking to max out. The “Mad Backer” turned down a deal from Baltimore worth $7.5 million annually to get $8 million a year from New York. Scott, 29 in August, will start inside next to David Harris. Rex Ryan is more familiar with Scott and figures to use him in the old Ray Lewis role while Harris takes on more blocks. Scott is a disruptive blitzer when given the freedom to do so. He’s also durable and will be an IDP to target.

I was wrong
Or I should say Shefter announced it was official, so I believed, and the terms were agreed on but not signed! Bart Scott is giving the Ravens a chance to match the offer.

Most physical?
I think Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark might disagree.

just being a homer
i was going to say “one of the most” but i decided “fuck it – i dont have to be politically correct all the time.”

Oh, I disagree with you on this one Matty,
of course they are going to be the most bad as physical safety tandem in the league. They were #9 and #13 in tackles overall in the league, and none other safeties were even close if you look at them as a tandem. lol

well said lol

and I´ve always said it, Polamalu is a great player but an overrated one also
that GREAT defense singlehandedly lost them that Super Bowl against Arizona if it weren´t for Ben and Holmes.

While I like Run Stopping Safeties
I would prefer safeties who can make plays on the football. Is Wilson a “ball hawk”?
by ct1361 on Feb 27, 2009 12:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
not really
He has a whopping career total of 23 passes defensed in 68 games. Yeremiah Bell had 23 passes defensed in just 2008 and 2006 combined (his last two full seasons).
He’s not horrible in pass coverage, but nothing is guaranteed with his move to free safety.
Both Bell and Wilson are prototypical in-the-box safeties. I wouldn’t expect a sudden influx of INTs now.

It's not like it's a foreign position for him though
he played FS two years ago.

right
I think he will do fine there, but it’s going to take him out of the box more frequently, which is where he excels the most.
I’m just pointing out that three teams (NYG, OAK, and SF) have passed on him to fill their FS need.

After the Super Bowl year
I believe he left NY to get a big contract. Oakland is clueless to what’s going on lol.
When was he in San Francisco?

he wasn't
But they looked at him for a quick second in free agency, and then decided he couldn’t fill their FS spot.
And Oakland may be an awful organization, but if Al Davis knows anything, it’s defensive backs.
Look, I’m not saying this guy is some complete failure. I really liked the signing. I’m just saying he’s not the best “ballhawk.” He’s an elite run stopping safety.

Damn. I was hoping for Ed Reed Light!
IMO, Reed was the best defensive player in football last year.
by ct1361 on Feb 27, 2009 1:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Reed might be the best defensive player in football right now
and he’s probably the best safety to ever play the game (at LEAST top 3).

Per NFL.com...
… in 68 career games he’s got 23 pass deflections and 13 INT’s.

Brian Dawkins - 34 INT's in 167 career games, 0.2 per game
Gibril Wilson – 13 INT’s in 68 career games, 0.19 per game
I’m good with that.

I'm confused here
Baltimore can give Domonique Foxworth $7mil a year, but wouldn’t pony up $8mil a year for Bart Scott? Did I hear that correctly? Wow..
