NO on Jason Brown

As the trifecta has been selling us all along, the best teams are built and sustained through the draft.

So here we are on the eve of Free Agency, and Miami has been busy with a flurry of activity, re-upping Crowder, Vernon, and now Gibril Wilson, who was let go by Oakland.

On the surface, it would appear that signing JASON BROWN  would solidify our line.  This assumption would be wrong.  First of all, the money it would take to sign him would make him the highest paid Center in the League, on an offensive line that already boasts the highest paid LT (Jake Long), and now the highest paid RT (Vernon Carey).  Does this seem prudent to spend all that money ?  It makes me cringe thinking we'd have 3 of the highest paid O-Linemen at their positions on one team!  Great Centers and O-Linemen can always be found in the middle rounds of the draft, and I put my faith in the trifecta to be able to successfully mine that talent.  Look what we did last year, finding Donald Thomas in the 6th Round?  Now he's ours on the cheap for several years, leaving us with more money on other players.

I'm a little nerous that in light of our recent success, the trifecta might be trying to cut corners by acquiring the quick fix in order to win NOW.  Look how many O-Linemen fizzle after signing big free agent deals with other teams.  The Bills just released Darnell Dockett after signing him just two years ago, and look how Damien Woody has worked out after signing big deals with Detroit and the Jets, after having success with the Pats.  And while some may succeed, this apparent signing will hurt our team and financial health in the long term.  Sure, I'd love to win now, but it's most important to sustain long term success, and that won't happen with huge free agent signings.  The only reason I can come up with is that the trifecta would address this need now, that way we can use the draft to focus on finding a Nose Tackle, Linebacker, and WR.  But again, just ask the Redskins how well they've done in free agency?  I  feel much more accomplished twhen rading a 4th rounder to the Cowboys for starters Anthony Fasano and Akin Ayodele.  It's moves like these that will sustain our team, not the free agent signings that garner all the PR.

Playing devil's advocate:

First off, we don’t have to worry about him being a free agent bust. If Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano (a former OL coach) likes Brown enough, then I’m comfortable with that. Secondly, this isn’t “quick fix.” Brown is only 25 years old. This is for both now and the future. And lastly, it doesn’t really bother me that we’d have 3 very high paid lineman (4 if you count Smiley). That’s where games are won – in the trenches. And adding Brown would really do wonders to this offensive line. You’d notice a big difference in Ronnie’s production – in my humble opinion.

I agree with you, Matty

Look at the teams with great running backs. They also have great lines.

Joseph Addai is a decent back. Behind the Indy line he looks All-Pro.

I’m willing to say that’s the reason San Diego can plug and play running backs. They have (when fully healthy) an awesome line.

The Steelers running game faltered last year. There one area they regressed in? Offensive line.

If you have an offensive line that dominates then you can plug in anyone and have production. Let alone Ronnie Brown. Or Ricky Williams for that matter.

Damien Woody

was past his prime when he signed his big FA deal. And Dockett is a DL.

This isn’t the normal Big Name Bust Free Agent Signing that you see all over the league, because Brown is only 25, and most of the guys that get the huge contract and then do nothing are past their prime, pushing mid-30’s.

Why not spend the money?

We seem to have the money to sign him, while not compromising any players on the current roster or missing out on other key players.

I would prefer we throw money at the O-line than any other position.

If we don’t sign Brown, then where does that many go?
I think any free agency signing combination that includes Brown is going to be the best value.

sure. more bang for the buck on the o-line

you have a player making 6M a year upgrading players that make a lot more.

I'd rather get Jason Brown and use the draft picks to upgrade at CB/NT

while adding depth on both sides of the line

No way

that the Trifecta is doing anything “quick fix” just because of last years results. Coach Sparano has said recently that this is a “2-3 year project and we knew this coming in” , thats not exact, but for a refresher, you can read this. I feel they will do what is best for the team long term! If they think he’s worth the money, I’m going to think its the right thing. You build your team in the trenches.

You can think about it that way or...

You could understand that every year a new player becomes the highest paid player at such position. Last year it was Tommy Kelly this year it will be Albert Haynesworth. If you get 5 offensive linemen and sign them to long term deals that may look expensive now in years to come you will be thanking the Trifecta. You have to establish the O-line at some point and in 5 years what these guys are signing for now will not look expensive at all. Get it done now and then let Big Tuna and Company pick up other pieces that are needed. If we had Brown as a big time center and our 2 promising tackles signed to long term deals with up and coming guards we would be starting something special in Miami.

by ziggystardust on Feb 26, 2009 3:56 PM EST reply actions

Positively Yes on Brown

Like many above have said. The game is built and succeeds in the trenches. Building that foundation with young experience now IS long term AND quick fix -the best of both. Again as many stated, the O line is where you can upgrade play of RB’s, QB, and TE.
As far as money, it’s going to be spent one way or tuther. If Trifecta puts it into the O line the they feel good about who they can draft.
I don’t think the Wilford Syndrome is a concern. I believe Trifecta has a better grasp on assessing attitude than most other teams.

Agreed with everyone

get Brown. He’s just coming into his prime and just imagine how much better we will be on both sides of the ball with a dominant o-line.

good feedback

Yes btw I did mean Derrick Dockery – my fault, but thanks for the pick-me-up.

As for Brown, maybe it would be a good signing, but you just never know what the trifecta is doing. Perhaps they’re just trying to throw everyone off, because they are usually tight lipped about their interests. Look at the Smiley signing last year. None of us had an inkling we were going to sign him, in addition to Gibril Wilson this morning.

wow.....

NFL Live just reported that Brown is probably going to hit the market, but he’s looking for a 8mill per year deal….. Thats big money for a center

8 mill

For $8 mil per year I prefer a combination of McFadden + Bodden + Center from the draft rather than Brown.

Although having Brown would make me extremely happy.

I respectfully disagree and say YES to Jason Brown...

even for 8 million a year.
It is not how much you spend on the OL, but where you allocate your resources…
We have “cut costs” at WR (Brandon London, Davone Bess, and Greg Camarillo are CHEAP, but efffective)
Ginn and Ronnie are “reasonably priced” high draft picks which are much less than Free Agent WR and RB
We save money at the QB position: the QB of the future is not some overpaid FA/trade cough Brett Farve cough, franchised player cough Matt Cassell cough, or high draft pick cough Matt Ryan cough, so why not spend the money on the OL and win a championship.
If the Dolphins win the super bowl with a killer dominating OL, who’s going to complain: “we spent too much money on the OL”!
If Parcells/Sparano are going to run the ball and stop the run, they better invest in a young, improving, dominant, ready-to-play-now Offensive Line. In my opinion, they will have…if they go after Jason Brown, even at 8 mill a year.

You build championship teams

starting with the front lines on Offense and Defense. This FO will draft on talent not need. They will not draft a Center because they need one but draft him because he is the best player at that pick. When you have a chance to get the best center in the league who is 25 yrs old, you try and get him. In my mind the Center is the most important on the line because he reads the defense and calls the protection. He also has to be good enough to move 320 lb men so there is running room and keep the pocket from getting to the QB. Drafting a Center is not easy because of the reads they have to make. They way I see it is go get Brown if not we still have a pretty good center on our team. I’m not worried about the cap, this FO is smart enough to work contracts so they don’t kill the growth of this team.

by jvw on Feb 26, 2009 5:12 PM EST reply actions

100% YES

to Jason Brown.

Don’t sleep on Al Johnson. He is a solid center and VERY smart. If he is in Parcell’s plans, and that’s assuming he’s healthy and ready to resume his improving play, then I’d like to see him at center and Jason Brown at guard.

With Jason Brown at Center we are still shy at Guard. Smiley Johnson and Brown make a stellar nucleus. Putting Brown at guard allows him to be a mauler like Smiley, less thinking, learning a new system, etc…

Also, keep in mind.. just like styles make fights, I believe personalities make teams. Successful teams always seem to drink the same KoolAid and Jason Brown fits the mold. So does Gibril Wilson, he is of the Parcells mold, and did not “fit-in” in Oakland. Over and over again you get these blockbuster, trendsetting signings that don’t work out because the ignorant GMs and owners are trying to buy championships with little regard to the chemisty of their team. CHEMISTRY = SUCCESS. Sometimes like the 92 Cowboys and 85 Bears mayhem is the chemistry, but that’s typically not the norm.

When you here the term, “Parcell’s guy” it really means something. If Jason Brown is a ‘Parcells guy, he’ll be awesome for us.

I won't be heartbroken one way or the other-

if we sign him- woohoo. If we don’t – we’ll draft a mauler.

There won't be 3 centers taken in the first 2 rounds of the draft

It wouldn’t surprise me is Mack and Unger will be there in the 2nd round for the Phins to draft.

by ct1361 on Feb 26, 2009 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

We could get a starting center in 4th round if we tried hard enough-

I think last year the 1st center off the board was at the bottom of the 2nd round- the next one was in the 4th. These guys aren’t gonna go as high as everyone thinks. Mack maybe at the bottom of the 1st, possibly 2nd- maybe Unger in the 2nd, but only b/c he he’s played guard and tackle.

Agreed

The only center I can remember taken in the first round the last 5-6 years was Mangold with the Jets. Very good player, Pro Bowler. But you can find quality centers in the mid rounds.
