Jets release Laveranues Coles; could Dolphins pursue?

The Jets have decided to cut WR Laveranues Coles today, according to the Newark Star Ledger.  Of course, that instantly begs the question - could Coles possibly land in Miami and reunite with his good friend Chad Pennington?

It's very possible.  The Sun-Sentinel belives the Dolphins might look into acquiring a veteran wide receiver who could mentor their younger receivers like Ted Ginn, Davone Bess, and Brandon London.  And we all know that Coles and Pennington are very, very close friends and would love to reunite in Miami.

At 31 years old, Coles still has plenty left in his tank.  His 70 catch, 850 yard, 7 touchdown season trumps any season by any Dolphins receiver last year.  And he's a Florida native who spent his college years at Florida State.  A return to the sunshine state could be exactly what he's looking for.

The problem, though, lies in what Coles is seeking financially.  I doubt the trifecta would spend a large amount of money on a position they regard as a luxury more so than a need.

But the thought is certainly enticing.  Would you want Coles to sign with the Dolphins?

I say no as well

Would be reluctant to bring a jet on board, although Chad did pay off.

However if we were to make 1 WR FA aquisiton, Coles would be that guy.

I’d focus on J. Brown though for now, he is our TOP priority.

he´ll retire a Dolphin and will always be a dolphin in his heart.

Yes

If he agreed to play for a reasonable salary, he would be a great addition to the WR core.
If we made that move, I can’t see us taking any WRs in the draft since we wouldn’t have a spot on the active roster for them unless we released Wilford and someone else.
This would allow us to focus on defence with our draft pics.
He is a Jets hater now. How can you not want a guy who hates the Jets?
I want a whole team comprised of players that hate the Jets organization.

If he takes a discount to get back with his boy Pennington it could be a good move.

They already have chemistry so you don’t have to worry about that. Could be a decent mentor for the young guys we have now since they’ve really never had a decent WR to show them the tricks of the trade, how to prepare, etc.

You can count on this to happen.....

Coles loves Pennington and Parcells. Parcells is the one who drafted him when the rest of the league treated him like an outlaw. Big Bill gave him a chance in the NFL, so I can see Coles coming over for reasonable money…….WOW we just upgraded our WR position with a guy who loves to play with or starting QB. When we win the Super Bowl again I say we give the Jets a ring for all they have done to help us get there. lol

Coles still has a lot left in the tank. He has speed, can make the tough catch over the middle and gets YAC’s. I can see this getting done soon…….

Opportunity Cost

What is the opportunity cost of signing Coles beyond the salary commitment? I think the biggest one is that we wouldn’t have a roster spot for a top end draft pick.
Since our WR core is so young right now, I think they would benefit more from Coles tutelage for a couple of seasons, rather than having another young guy out there just running around.
If Ginn, Bess and London can learn a few things from Coles and become better professionals, then this is a signing I would do any day.

by Patrick Bateman79 on Feb 25, 2009 5:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Undecided

depends on the cost, if he’s willing to take a pay cut to reunite with Pennington then I’m all for it. If we don’t make a run at him then I’d say that locks in a WR on day one of the draft.

No thanks

I’ll pass. He doesn’t fill the need we have at WR, because we already have a guy JUST LIKE HIM on our roster, in Ted Ginn Jr. Coles is what we all expect Ginn to be in the next couple years.

Unless we’re bringing in a big, young receiver, I’m not interested. Maybe Wilford comes around. Maybe London pans out. Maybe we draft Britt or Robiskie. But I don’t think Coles is the answer.

Nop,

Im in the same page as you. However my main worry is not football wise. Where I am going at with this is that it would worry me a lot that this move pulls Chad apart from his new current teammates and that our leadership in our team took a hit. Its just human nature that when something from your past returns to the present, a whole lot of things do as well. And Chad´s past in NY was a painful one so I wouldnt really like that at all. I can see the whole Romo-Witten-Owens bermuda triangle coming a mile away.

by MauMontaV5 on Feb 25, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think we have to worry about that with Chad

He’s got a good head on his shoulders, and he jumped in immediately as the leader of this team, so that wouldn’t change just because Coles is brought in.

My concern is that it’s a sideways move, not a forward one. We have no need for a smaller, deep threat of a WR, because we have one already, and we don’t even use him to his fullest potential as a deep threat. I think we need a big, possession, jump-ball type of WR, like what we all expected to get out of the Wilford signing.

"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"

by Little Nicky 21 on Feb 25, 2009 5:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, MIA does NOT = DAL

Chad is one of the smartest QB’s in the game, it would be an insult to compare his mindset to Romo.
And TO is TO, we will continue to keep him as far from our organization as possible.

Obv. if the price is right anything is possible… this could make sense bc of the parody with CP10 plus if we draft a young rookie he’s got alot of support to learn and adapt to the game (Heywood Bey’s raw gameplay but amazing potential could be make ALOT of sense, no!?)

But, i would rather focus on our time and money on our line, we have to make a solid push for Jason Brown before Coles becomes even the slightest thought.

Laces out!

by MauMontaV5 on Feb 25, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see a need to continue bringing in more vets to help "develop" our young guys

let the young guys play, that’s the best way to learn the game and get better. We have enough vets to teach guys the ropes. This will be Ginn’s 3rd season, he shouldn’t need a veteran WR mentor anymore, he should be stepping into a role as a playmaker. The only way that happens is if he plays.

Maybe- but I really look back to Ginn's background-

specifically that he was a CB in highschool- I think he has a steeper learning curve than the average receiver.

JETS WILL GET CAP CREDIT IF COLES SIGNS ELSEWHERE
Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2009, 5:41 p.m.
OK, the Jets’ decision to cut receiver Laveranues Coles makes a little more sense than we previously thought.

If Coles gets signed by a new team, whatever Coles makes in that new city will come off the $6 million that the Jets owe him in 2009.

The explanation comes from Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News.

If Coles doesn’t find a new gig, then the Jets will be on the hook for the full $6 million.

this is from PFT, so if we sign Coles, we actually help the Jets cap situation.

I disagree that our WR won't develop.

It will allow Ginn to get even better against single coverage and will also open up the field for Bess and London. I think bringing Coles in will get every receiver on our team more touches as teams have to focus on either him or Ginn. Davone Bess will be tearing it up and we’ll see London open more often in the end zone during red zone offense. Really, it will cost our TEs and RBs some passes.

PFT Correction:

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/25/on-further-review-coles-walked-away-from-his-6-million/

OK, now this is getting weird.

Despite a report in the New York Daily News that the guaranteed $6 million in base salary that receiver Laveranues Coles is due to earn from the Jets will be reduced by whatever he earns elsewhere, Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger has clarified for us that Coles has walked away from the guaranteed payment.

Does he want more money or is he just tired of the organization?

OK sign him too

a 4-5 yr contract. Give him 6-7 mil guranteed with an overall total of about 13-13.5 mil. He is worth it and what he will do for the other guys by being a true number 1 receiver gives us the firepower Parcells says we need. Add to that a big tough run blocking center and I would be ok with that and the draft.

by jvw on Feb 25, 2009 6:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

whoa-

I like him but not for that kind of cash. I’d say 3 year deal max, and only a year or two of guaranteed $$ so we can dump him in year three if we need to free up cap/roster space.

Re: whoa-

Agreed. I think Coles would be of benefit to us as a transition WR, similar to the way Pennington is a transition QB. Within 2 years we want Henne as the QB, and Ginn, London and Bess to be our top 3 wr’s.
Signing him for longer than 3 years is crazy.
Plus, once we bench Pennington for Henne, I could see Coles becoming a distraction.

This is the first receiver that I’m on board for going after. He is 31 which is going to lower his bargaining power a bit, and he might even be willing to take even less to play with his favorite quarterback again. Imagine Ginn and Coles racing down opposite sidelines. Sweet!

Maybe Coles wanted out with Miami in mind?

He knows we want a reciever. His best bud has found success here. His former coach is in charge here. There’s an atmoshere of winning and work ethic here. He’s a guy that wants to win games and be successful. He’s from Florida. Maybe he felt this was his chance to get to Miami?

Personally, I think we should look into getting him. Just because it gets the Jets a Cap break doesn’t mean it gets them better talent. Maybe Coles would be willing to play for us for a little less money as long as he’s happy? Think about it: You leave a team because you don’t think they’re on the right track to win games…who ya gonna call? Certainly not the Lions for a huge payday.

Hattip to fishstick for posting this earlier

Here is my response I posted in his thread earlier this afternoon:

* take him*

if we can get a good deal worked out, sign him.
1) he has chemistry with CP10
2) karma would be on our side (like when we got CP10)
3) he would be motivated to help us wreck the jets
4) he does well against NE

yeah he’s not huge, but he is better than our current WRs (until they develop).

Why the Hell not?

At a bargain price, he would definitely sign here. He would be coming back to Florida, he already has a relationship with Chad(Remember he was pissed when the Jets released him), and he would love to stay in the division. It’s no secret we need another playmake opposite Ginn Jr., and Coles still has plenty left in the tank. We all wanted a great veteran receiver, well here’s our chance. As good of an idea it is to sign Coles, I porefer to save every penny and put it into signing Jason Brown. Miami did ok as a running team but thats because big defenses would gave our pocket in and also because the opposing defences stopped the R&R train from really busting loose. If we pick up Jason Brown that will keep defenses more honest, we will have an extra couple of seconds for our receivers to get open or for our back field to gain some extra yards. With the extra time in the pocket CP10 can scan the field better and not make any costly mistakes (a la Baltimore play off game). And Coles even if he gets a league minimum because of his time in the NFL will be close to 2 mil. To me thats not worth it. We need to hope that Wilford gets his act together and the receivers develop alot more this year. Keep in mind we don’t have very seasoned guy but they are defintely getting used to the spped of the game and the prepartion it takes to be successful. Chad has them boys coming in almost every day, and they love it. This is a future we can build on. Teddy is in his official 3rd year as an NFL wide receiver, Bess is no longer a rookie, Camarillo will be back and London is set to be a solid back up. These guys are starving and ready to show the world why they should have been picked/drafted/signed by other teams. But I still wouldn’t mind drafting a guy like Louis Murphy in the late 2nd early 3rd round of the draft.
